Abstract
Aluminum (Al), prevalent in the crust of the Earth, jeopardizes plant health in acidic soils, hindering root growth and overall development. In this study, we first analysed the Al- and pH- tolerance of the Penicillium olsonii TLL1 strain (POT1; NRRL:68252) and investigated the potential for enhancing plant resilience under Al-rich acidic soil conditions. Our research illustrates the extraordinary tolerance of POT1 to both high Al concentrations and acidic conditions, showcasing its potential to alleviate Al-induced stress in plants. Metabolite analysis revealed that POT1 detoxifies Al through organic acid-dependent chelation mechanisms, significantly reducing Al stress in Arabidopsis and Pak Choi plants. Consequently, plant growth conditions improved, and the Al content in plant tissues decreased. Transcriptome analysis indicated that POT1 treatment downregulates genes associated with Al and oxidative stress such as MATE, ALS3, NIP1-2 and several peroxidases, highlighting its effectiveness in lessening Al-induced damage. Comparative assessments highlight the superior performance of POT1 compared to other Al-tolerant Penicillium species, attributed to its ability to thrive in diverse pH levels and effectively detoxify Al. These findings position POT1 as a promising agent for enhancing crop resilience in Al-compromised acidic soils, offering new avenues for promoting plant health and bolstering food security through increased crop yield and safety.

Abstract
Little information is available on how boron (B) supplementation affects plant cell wall (CW) remodeling under copper (Cu) excess. 'Xuegan' (Citrus sinensis) seedlings were submitted to 0.5 or 350 µM Cu × 2.5 or 25 µM B for 24 weeks. Thereafter, we determined the concentrations of CW materials (CWMs) and CW components (CWCs), the degree of pectin methylation (DPM), and the pectin methylesterase (PME) activities and PME gene expression levels in leaves and roots, as well as the Cu concentrations in leaves and roots and their CWMs (CWCs). Additionally, we analyzed the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of leaf and root CWMs. Our findings suggested that adding B reduced the impairment of Cu excess to CWs by reducing the Cu concentrations in leaves and roots and their CWMs and maintaining the stability of CWs, thereby improving leaf and root growth. Cu excess increased the Cu fractions in leaf and root pectin by decreasing DPM due to increased PME activities, thereby contributing to citrus Cu tolerance. FTIR and XRD indicated that the functional groups of the CW pectin, hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin could bind and immobilize Cu, thereby reducing Cu cytotoxicity in leaves and roots.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) toxicity in acidic soils is a major abiotic stress that negatively impacts plant growth and development. The toxic effects of Al manifest primarily in the root system, leading to inhibited root elongation and functionality, which impairs the above-ground organs of the plant. Recent research has greatly improved our understanding of the applications of small molecule compounds in alleviating Al toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the role of boron (B), silicon (Si), and their combination in alleviating Al toxicity in soybeans. The results revealed that the combined application significantly improved the biomass and length of soybean roots exposed to Al toxicity compared to B and Si treatments alone. Our results also indicated that Al toxicity causes programmed cell death (PCD) in soybean roots, while B, Si, and their combination all alleviated the PCD induced by Al toxicity. The oxidative damage induced by Al toxicity was noticeably alleviated, as evidenced by lower MAD and H2O2 accumulation in the soybean roots treated with the B and Si combination. Moreover, B, Si, and combined B and Si significantly enhanced plant antioxidant systems by up-regulating antioxidant enzymes including CAT, POD, APX, and SOD. Overall, supplementation with B, Si, and their combination was found to alleviate oxidative damage and reduce PCD caused by Al toxicity, which may be one of the mechanisms by which they alleviate root growth inhibition due to Al toxicity. Our results suggest that supplementation with B, Si, and their combination may be an effective strategy to improve soybean growth and productivity against Al toxicity.

Abstract
Boron (B) is an essential microelement for plants, and its deficiency can lead to impaired development and function. Around 50% of arable land in the world is acidic, and low pH in the soil solution decreases availability of several essential mineral elements, including B, magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K). Plants take up soil B in the form of boric acid (H3BO3) in acidic soil or tetrahydroxy borate [B(OH)4]- at neutral or alkaline pH. Boron can participate directly or indirectly in plant metabolism, including in the synthesis of the cell wall and plasma membrane, in carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and in the formation of ribonucleic acid (RNA). In addition, B interacts with other nutrients such as Ca, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), K, and zinc (Zn). In this review, we discuss the mechanisms of B uptake, absorption, and accumulation and its interactions with other elements, and how it contributes to the adaptation of plants to different environmental conditions. We also discuss potential B-mediated networks at the physiological and molecular levels involved in plant growth and development.

Abstract
Silicon (Si) and boron (B) are a class of elements called metalloids, which have properties like metals and non-metals. Si is classified as a quasi-essential element, while B is a micronutrient element for plants. Nowadays, numerous discoveries have shown the analogy of silicon and boron in plant nutrition. In this minireview, the molecular mechanisms for the transport of these two metalloids are compared. We also discussed the chemical forms of Si and B and their functional similarity in response to environmental stresses in plants. In conclusion, it can be proposed that cell wall-bound silicon rather than silica might partially replace boron for plant growth, development, and stress responses, and the underlying mechanism is the Si contribution to B in its structural function.

Abstract
The tea plant accumulates elevated levels of fluoride (F) from environmental sources. Drinking tea containing high F levels poses a potential threat to human health. Selenium (Se) was applied by foliar spray to investigate its effects on F accumulation and physiology in tea plant. Foliar application of different forms of Se, i.e., Na2SeO3, Kappa-selenocarrageenan, Selenomethionine and Nanoselenium, reduced F content in tea leaves by 10.17 %-44.28 %, 16.12 %-35.41 %, 22.19 %-45.99 % and 22.24 %-43.82 %, respectively. Foliar spraying Se could increase F accumulation in pectin through increasing pectin content and pectin demethylesterification to bind more F in the cell wall, which decreased the proportion of water-soluble fluoride in tea leaves. Application of Se significantly decreased the contents of chromium (39.6 %-72.0 %), cadmium (48.3 %-84.4 %), lead (2.2 %-44.4 %) and copper (14.1 %-44.6 %) in tea leaves. Foliar spraying various forms of Se dramatically increased the Se content and was efficiently transformed into organic Se accounting for more than 80 % in tea leaves. All Se compounds increased peroxidase activity by 3.3 %-35.5 % and catalase activity by 2.6 %-99.4 %, reduced malondialdehyde content by 5.6 %-37.1 %, and increased the contents of chlorophyll by 0.65 %-31.8 %, carotenoids by 0.24 %-27.1 %, total catechins by 1.6 %-21.0 %, EGCG by 4.4 %-17.6 % and caffeine by 9.1 %-28.6 %. These results indicated that Se application could be served as a potential efficient and safe strategy diminishing the concentration of F in tea leaves.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a significant constraint on agricultural productivity worldwide. Melatonin (MT) has been shown to alleviate Al toxicity in plants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we employed a combination of physiological and molecular biology techniques to examine the role of MT in mitigating Al toxicity of hickory. We found that MT decreased the contents of cell wall pectin, hemicellulose, Al, and Al-induced massive reactive oxygen species accumulation in the roots of hickory. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that MT may alleviate root tip Al stress by regulating Al-responsive and nonresponsive pathways. Co-expression regulatory network and dual-luciferase receptor assays revealed that transcription factors, CcC3H12 and CcAZF2, responded to MT and significantly activated the expression of two cell wall pectin-related genes, CcPME61 and CcGAE6, respectively. Further, yeast one-hybrid and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) assays verified that CcC3H12 and CcAZF2 regulated CcPME61 and CcGAE6, respectively, by directly binding to their promoters. Overexpression of CcPME61 enhanced the Al sensitivity of Arabidopsis thaliana. Our results indicate that MT can improve Al tolerance of hickory via multiple pathways, which provides a new perspective for the study of the mechanism of MT in alleviating abiotic stress.

Thereafter, we investigated the secretion of low molecular weight compounds [LMWCs; citrate, malate, total soluble sugars (TSS), total phenolics (TP), and total free amino acids (TFAA)] by excised roots and their concentrations in roots and leaves, as well as related enzyme gene expression and activities in roots and leaves. Cu-stress stimulated root release of malate and TFAA, which might contribute to citrus Cu-tolerance. However, B-mediated-mitigation of Cu-stress could not be explained in this way, since B addition failed to further stimulate malate and TFAA secretion. Indeed, B addition decreased Cu-stimulated-secretion of malate. Further analysis suggested that Cu-induced-exudation of malate and TFAA was not regulated by their levels in roots. By contrast, B addition increased malate, citrate, and TFAA concentrations in Cu-toxic roots. Cu-toxicity increased TP concentration in 25 μM B-treated leaves, but not in 2.5 μM B-treated leaves. Our findings suggested that the internal detoxification of Cu by LMWCs played a role in B-mediated-alleviation of Cu-toxicity.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) is the most prevalent element in the earth crust and is toxic to plants in acidic soils. However, plants can address Al toxicity through external exclusion (which prevents Al from entering roots) and internal detoxification (which counterbalances the toxic-Al absorbed by roots). Nowadays, certain categories of exogenously added regulatory factors (EARF), such as nutritional elements, organic acids, amino acids, phytohormones, or biochar, etc. play a critical role in reducing the bioavailability/toxicity of Al in plants. Numerous studies suggest that regulating factors against Al toxicity mediate the expression of Al-responsive genes and transcription factors, thereby regulating the secretion of organic acids, alkalizing rhizosphere pH, modulating cell wall (CW) modifications, improving antioxidant defense systems, and promoting the compartmentalization of non-toxic Al within intracellular. This review primarily discusses recent and older published papers to demonstrate the basic concepts of Al phytotoxicity. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive explanation of the crucial roles of EARF-induced responses against Al toxicity in plants. This information may serve as a foundation for improving plant resistance to Al and enhancing the growth of susceptible species in acidic soils. And this review holds significant theoretical significance for EARF to improve the quality of acidic soils cultivated land, increase crop yield and quality, and ensure food security.

Abstract
Soil acidification in apple (Malus domestica) orchards results in the release of rhizotoxic aluminum ions (Al3+) into soil. Melatonin (MT) participates in plant responses to abiotic stress; however, its role in AlCl3 stress in apple remains unknown. In this study, root application of MT (1 μM) substantially alleviated AlCl3 stress (300 μM) in Pingyi Tiancha (Malus hupehensis), which was reflected by higher fresh and dry weight, increased photosynthetic capacity, and longer and more roots compared with plants that did not receive MT treatment. MT functioned mainly by regulating vacuolar H+/Al3+ exchange and maintaining H+ homeostasis in the cytoplasm under AlCl3 stress. Transcriptome deep sequencing analysis identified the transcription factor gene SENSITIVE TO PROTON RHIZOTOXICITY 1 (MdSTOP1) was induced by both AlCl3 and MT treatments. Overexpressing MdSTOP1 in apple increased AlCl3 tolerance by enhancing vacuolar H+/Al3+ exchange and H+ efflux to the apoplast. We identified 2 transporter genes, ALUMINUM SENSITIVE 3 (MdALS3) and SODIUM HYDROGEN EXCHANGER 2 (MdNHX2), as downstream targets of MdSTOP1. MdSTOP1 interacted with the transcription factor NAM ATAF and CUC 2 (MdNAC2) to induce MdALS3 expression, which reduced Al toxicity by transferring Al3+ from the cytoplasm to the vacuole. Furthermore, MdSTOP1 and MdNAC2 coregulated MdNHX2 expression to increase H+ efflux from the vacuole to the cytoplasm to promote Al3+ compartmentalization and maintain cation balance in the vacuole. Taken together, our findings reveal an MT-STOP1 + NAC2-NHX2/ALS3-vacuolar H+/Al3+ exchange model for the alleviation of AlCl3 stress in apple, laying a foundation for practical applications of MT in agriculture.

Abstract
Environmental changes derived from global warming and human activities increase the intensity and frequency of stressful conditions for plants. Multiple abiotic factors acting simultaneously enhance stress pressure and drastically reduce plant growth, yield, and survival. Stress combination causes a specific stress situation that induces a particular plant response different to the sum of responses to the individual stresses. Here, by comparing transcriptomic and proteomic profiles to different abiotic stress combinations in two citrus genotypes, Carrizo citrange (Citrus sinensis × Poncirus trifoliata) and Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reshni), with contrasting tolerance to different abiotic stresses, we revealed key responses to the triple combination of heat stress, high irradiance and drought. The specific transcriptomic response to this stress combination in Carrizo was directed to regulate RNA metabolic pathways and translation processes, potentially conferring an advantage with respect to Cleopatra. In addition, we found endoplasmic reticulum stress response as common to all individual and combined stress conditions in both genotypes and identified the accumulation of specific groups of heat shock proteins (HSPs), such as small HSPs and HSP70s, and regulators of the unfolded protein response, BiP2 and PDIL2-2, as possible factors involved in citrus tolerance to triple stress combination. Taken together, our findings provide new insights into the acclimation process of citrus plants to multiple stress combination, necessary for increasing crop tolerance to the changing climatic conditions.
