Abstract
Soybean proteins (pro) and soybean peptides (pep) are beneficial to the growth and metabolism of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri). However, whether they could assist L. reuteri in inhibiting intestinal pathogens and the inhibition mode of them is still unclear. In this study, a co-culture experiment of L. reuteri LR08 with Escherichia coli JCM 1649 (E. coli) was performed. It showed that pro and pep could still favour the growth of L. reuteri over E. coli under their competition. The inhibition zone experiment showed the digested soybean proteins (dpro) could improve its antibacterial activity by increasing the secretion of organic acids from L. reuteri. Furthermore, digested soybean peptides (dpep) could enhance nitrogen utilization capacity of L. reuteri over E. coli. These results explained the patterns of dpro and dpep assisting L. reuteri in inhibiting the growth of E. coli by regulating its organic acid secretion and the ability of nitrogen utilization.

Abstract
Salmonella Typhimurium is a foodborne pathogen often found in the poultry production chain. Antibiotics have been used to reduce S. Typhimurium contamination in poultry aviaries and improve chicken growth. However, antibiotics were banned in several countries. Alternatively, organic acids, such as propionic acid (PA), can control pathogens. This study determined the PA minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and mathematically modeled S. Typhimurium growth/inactivation kinetics under the influence of PA at different pH values (4.5, 5.5, and 6.5) which are within the pH range of the chicken gastrointestinal tract. The PA MIC against S. Typhimurium was pH-dependent, resulting in 5.0, 3.5 and 9.0 mM undissociated PA at pH 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5, respectively. The Baranyi and Roberts and the Weibull model fit growth and inactivation data well, respectively. Secondary models were proposed. The validated model predicted 3-log reduction of S. Typhimurium in 3 h at 68.2 mM of undissociated PA and pH 4.5. The models presented a good capacity to describe the kinetics of S. Typhimurium subjected to PA, representing a useful tool to predict PA antibacterial action depending on the pH.

Abstract
Previous studies demonstrated jujube blackening effectively increased cyclic adenosine phosphate and triterpene acid levels, improving its nutritional value. However, compositional changes during this process require further elucidation. The objective aimed to analyze compositional transformations during this process with SEM, TPA, UPLC-MS, E-nose. Results showed decreased hardness, springiness, and chewiness coupled with increased gumminess over blackening durations. Untargeted omics analysis revealed increases of 2-aminooctadec-8-ene-1,3,4-trioland carbendazim. Targeted organic acid analysis showed initial citric acid accumulation (1481.62 to 1645.78 mg/kg) in the first 24 h, then declines to 1072.96 mg/kg. Meanwhile, oxalic and lactic acids steadily rose, peaking at 96-120 h before slightly decreasing. E-nose analysis implied alterations in organic sulfide aromatics engendered the characteristic flavors. Organic acid fluctuations likely resulted from sugar biotransformation and thermal degradation. These comprehensive analyses demonstrate jujube blackening imparts a rich and unique flavor, providing theoretical support for investigating the mechanisms and products underlying this process.

Abstract
With the vigorous development of the new energy industry, the use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is growing exponentially, and the recycling of spent LIBs has gradually become a research hotspot. Currently, recycling both cathode and anode materials of LIBs is important to environmental protection and resource recycling. This research reportsa method ofefficient purification and high-quality regeneration of graphite from spent LIBs by surfactant-assisted methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Under the optimal conditions (0.006 mol/L sodium dodecyl sulfonate, 0.25 mol/L MSA, 10 vol% hydrogen peroxide, liquid-solid ratio of 30:1 mL/g, 60 °C, 1.5 h), the purity of the regenerated graphite was 99.7 %, and the recovery efficiency was 98.0 %. The regenerated graphite showed the characteristics of small interplanar spacing, high degree of graphitization, a small number of surface defects, and excellent pore structure, which was closer to commercial graphite. Furthermore, the regenerated graphite electrode exhibited superior rate performance and cycling stability with a high specific capacity of 397.03 mAh/g after 50 cycles at 0.1C and a charge-discharge efficiency of 99.33 %. The recovery of anode graphite beneficial for resource utilization, environmental protection, and cost control throughout the entire production chain.

Abstract
This study investigates the genetic responses of the fungus Trichoderma asperellum (T. asperellum) during bioleaching of ore and tailing samples, comparing one-step, two-step, and spent media bioleaching processes. HPLC analysis quantified oxalic acid, citric acid, and propionic acids, with oxalic acid identified as the primary organic acid involved in metal bioleaching. Metal analysis revealed differences in recovery between ore and tailing samples and among bioleaching processes. The two-step bioleaching process yielded the highest zinc (>54%) and nickel (>60%) recovery in tailings and ore, respectively. Nickel's efficient recovery in ore bioleaching was attributed to the presence of manganese, while its precipitation as nickel oxalate in tailings hindered recovery. Additional metals such as Co, Mn, Mg, Cu, and As were also successfully recovered. Transcriptomic analyses showed significant upregulation of genes associated with biological processes and cellular components, particularly those related to cell membrane structure and function, indicating T. asperellum's adaptation to environmental stresses during metal bioleaching. These findings enhance our understanding of the diverse mechanisms influencing metal recovery rates in bioleaching processes.

Abstract
Organic acids are important compounds with numerous applications in different industries. This work presents a comprehensive review of the biological synthesis of oxalic acid, an important organic acid with many industrial applications. Due to its important applications in pharmaceuticals, textiles, metal recovery, and chemical and metallurgical industries, the global demand for oxalic acid has increased. As a result, there is an increasing need to develop more environmentally friendly and economically attractive alternatives to chemical synthesis methods, which has led to an increased focus on microbial fermentation processes. This review discusses the specific strategies for microbial production of oxalic acid, focusing on the benefits of using bio-derived substrates to improve the economics of the process and promote a circular economy in comparison with chemical synthesis. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the various fermentation methods, fermenting microorganisms, and the biochemistry of oxalic acid production. It also highlights key sustainability challenges and considerations related to oxalic acid biosynthesis, providing important direction for further research. By providing and critically analyzing the most recent information in the literature, this review serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding the biosynthesis of oxalic acid, addressing critical research gaps, and future advances in the field.

Abstract
To produce quality dry red wines with high-acidity grapes of Vitis amurensis, an experiment was designed to adjust pH during winemaking by adding KHCO3 at two time points and two pH levels in conjunction with malolactic fermentation (MLF). The organic acids and volatiles were detected by HPLC and GC-MS separately, combing with the color characteristic and sensory evaluation, we investigated the quality of V.amurensis wines under pH adjustment. Results showed that the pH adjustment weakened the wine color slightly but helped to initiate MLF. The low pH value of alcoholic fermentation favored the development of esters and higher alcohols. Higher pH levels promoted a sufficient MLF and enhanced the global aroma levels by 1.14-1.25 times, which led to higher sensory scores. In conclusion, KHCO3 addition and MLF improved the quality of V. amurensis dry red wines, chemical addition after alcoholic fermentation was more effective for cold regions.

Abstract
The perceived flavor of coffee varies depending on the composition of the brewing water, and the influencing mechanisms are poorly understood. To investigate the effect of dissolved divalent cations on the extraction of organic acids in coffee, magnesium and calcium chloride salts were added pre- and post-brew. Citric, malic, lactic and quinic acid were analyzed using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. At concentrations typically found in drinking water, the salts resulted in limited variation of the acid content, while ten-fold higher salt concentrations produced more pronounced variations. Comparisons between pre- and post-brew additions showed similar acid content in most cases, suggesting that extraction of acids proceeds independent of the water composition. Interactions taking place post-brew may, however, influence the perceived flavor. A scientific basis for water quality recommendations in the coffee industry is long overdue and this work provides experimental and analytical contributions to continued research.

Abstract
Ripening and growing location are important factors that can impact fruit quality characteristics. In this study, the influence of these factors on physicochemical characteristics, carbohydrates, aliphatic organic acids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity of red guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) was evaluated. Fruit ripening increased fructose and glucose (up to 22.83 and 16.42 g 100 g- 1 dry matter (DM), respectively), and decreased citric acid, the major organic acid (up to 135.35 mg g- 1 DM). Ripening and growing location also influenced the concentration of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of red guava, in which a dependency between both factors was observed in most cases. Apigenin, galangin, isoquercitrin, among other phenolic compounds were quantified for the first time in red guava, in which isoquercitrin was the major (up to 13409.81 mg kg- 1 DM). The antioxidant potential of red guava was also confirmed by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (up to 82.63 µmol Fe+ 2 g- 1 DM), Folin-Ciocalteu reducing capacity assay (up to 17.79 mg gallic acid equivalent g- 1 DM), and DPPH free radical scavenging assay (up to 25.36 mg ascorbic acid equivalent g- 1 DM). These results especially demonstrated the bioactive potential of red guava and provided knowledge regarding the influence of ripening and growing location on chemical and bioactive components encouraging its industrial exploitation.

Abstract
The EHL1/2/3 genes were identified by whole-genome sequencing of Kyokai No. 7 (K7), which is a well-known representative Japanese sake yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The genes are present in K7, but not in laboratory strain S288C. Although the genes were presumed to encode epoxide hydrolase based on homology analysis, their effect on cellular metabolism in sake yeast has not yet been clarified. We constructed ehl1/2/3 mutants harboring a stop codon in each gene using the haploid yeast strain H3 as the parental strain, which was derived from K701, and investigated the physiological role and effects of the EHL1/2/3 genes on sake quality. Metabolome analysis and vitamin requirement testing revealed that the EHL1/2/3 genes are partly responsible for the synthesis of pantothenate. For fermentation profiles, ethanol production by the ehl1/2/3 mutant was comparable with that of strain H3, but succinate production was decreased in the ehl1/2/3 mutant compared to strain H3 when cultured in yeast malt (YM) medium containing 10% glucose and during sake brewing. Ethyl hexanoate and isoamyl acetate levels in the ehl1/2/3 mutant strain were decreased compared to those of strain H3 during sake brewing. Thus, the EHL1/2/3 genes did not affect ethanol production but did affect the production of organic acids and aromatic components during sake brewing.

Abstract
Recycling saline wastewater for agricultural irrigation offer a promising solution to address both water scarcity and anthropogenic pollution. However, organic-inorganic fouling in saline wastewater irrigation systems (SWIS) poses significant technical and economic challenges. Traditional chemical biocides are currently insufficient for controlling composite organic-inorganic fouling and may pose environmental hazards. This study proposed a greener approach using organic acid (OA) fertilizers to alleviate organic-inorganic fouling in agricultural SWIS. The treatment performances were assessed employing four types of OA fertilizers (i.e., humic acid, alginic acid, nucleotide, and ammonia acid) and a negative control. Results showed that three types of OA, i.e., alginic acid, nucleotide, and ammonia acid, effectively reduced the total SWIS fouling content by 11.2%-57.4%, whereas humic acid exacerbated fouling by 11.2%-57.4%. Specifically, all types of OA significantly mitigated the content of inorganic fouling (precipitates and silicates) by 10.7%-42.3% by forming loosed and sparser structures. However, OA exhibited minimum effects on controlling silica fouling. Meanwhile, except the humic acid, other types of OA decreased the total content of organic fouling by 17.2%-39.5% by reducing the content of humic substances and building block fractions. In addition, the significant binary interactions of organic-inorganic fouling indicated the active role of calcium silica and biomineralization fouling. These findings provide insight into the development of appropriate and eco-friendly antifouling strategies for SWIS, with implications for recycling and reusing saline wastewater.

Abstract
Resin glycosides are commonly found in plants belonging to the Convolvulaceae family. Ipomoea lacunosa L. (Convolvulaceae) is an herbaceous vine native to the United States. The resin glycosides of this plant have not been studied in detail. In this study, the components of the crude resin glycoside fraction extracted from the seeds of I. lacunosa are characterized. Alkaline hydrolysis of the crude resin glycoside fraction obtained from methanolic extract of the seeds yielded three organic acids, namely, 2S-methylbutyric, (E)-2-methylbut-2-enoic, and 2R-methyl-3R-hydroxybutyric acids, and a glycosidic acid fraction. Acidic hydrolysis of the glycosidic acid fraction yielded hydroxyl fatty acid components, including 7S-hydroxydecanoic, 11S-hydroxytetradecanoic, 11S-hydroxyhexadecanoic, 3S,11S-dihydroxytetradecanoic, 3S,11S-dihydroxyhexadecanoic, and 3S,12S-dihydroxyhexadecanoic acids, as well as monosaccharide components, including d-glucose, d-quinovose, d-fucose, and l-rhamnose. Trimethylsilyldiazomethane-hexane treatment of the glycosidic acid fraction further yielded eleven previously undescribed glycosidic acid methyl esters and two known glycosidic acid methyl esters. The structures of the obtained compounds were characterized using various spectral techniques. Four of the undescribed compounds were hexaglycosides, five were heptaglycosides, and two were octaglycosides. The aglycone of these compounds was either methyl 11S-hydroxytetradecanoate, methyl 3S,11S-dihydroxytetradecanoate, or methyl 3S,11S-dihydroxyhexadecanoate. Among the undescribed compounds identified, eight contained novel glycans, and three were rare bisdesmosides with sugar linkages at the C-3 and C-11 positions of methyl 3S,11S-dihydroxytetradecanoate.

Abstract
Symbiotic interactions play a vital role in maintaining the phosphate (Pi) nutrient status of host plants and providing resilience during biotic and abiotic stresses. Serendipita indica, a mycorrhiza-like fungus, supports plant growth by transporting Pi to the plant. Despite the competitive behaviour of arsenate (AsV) with Pi, the association with S. indica promotes plant growth under arsenic (As) stress by reducing As bioavailability through adsorption, accumulation, and precipitation within the fungus. However, the capacity of S. indica to enhance Pi accumulation and utilization under As stress remains unexplored. Axenic studies revealed that As supply significantly reduces intracellular ACPase activity in S. indica, while extracellular ACPase remains unaffected. Further investigations using Native PAGE and gene expression studies confirmed that intracellular ACPase (isoform2) is sensitive to As, whereas extracellular ACPase (isoform1) is As-insensitive. Biochemical analysis showed that ACPase (isoform1) has a Km of 0.5977 µM and Vmax of 0.1945 Unit/min. In hydroponically cultured tomato seedlings, simultaneous inoculation of S. indica with As on the 14thday after seed germination led to hyper-colonization, increased root/shoot length, biomass, and induction of ACPase expression and secretion under As stress. Arsenic-treated S. indica colonized groups (13.33 µM As+Si and 26.67 µM As+Si) exhibited 8.28-19.14 and 1.71-3.45-fold activation of ACPase in both rhizospheric media and root samples, respectively, thereby enhancing Pi availability in the surrounding medium under As stress. Moreover, S. indica (13.33 µM As+Si and 26.67 µM As+Si) significantly improved Pi accumulation in roots by 7.26 and 9.46 times and in shoots by 4.36 and 8.85 times compared to the control. Additionally, S. indica induced the expression of SiPT under As stress, further improving Pi mobilization. Notably, fungal colonization also restricted As mobilization from the hydroponic medium to the shoot, with a higher amount of As (191.01 ppm As in the 26.67 µM As+Si group) accumulating in the plant's roots. The study demonstrates the performance of S. indica under As stress in enhancing Pi mobilization while limiting As uptake in the host plant. These findings provide the first evidence of the As-Pi interaction in the AM-like fungus S. indica, indicating reduced As uptake and regulation of PHO genes (ACPase and SiPT genes) to increase Pi acquisition. These data also lay the foundation for the rational use of S. indica in agricultural practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic commonly used for the treatment of hypertension, is often associated with serious metabolic side effects. Pyrrosia petiolosa (Christ) Ching is a traditional Chinese medicine that possesses diuretic properties, without any obvious side effects. AIM To evaluate the diuretic effect of P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching and to elucidate its underlying mechanism of action. METHODS Extracts obtained from different polar components of P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching were analyzed for toxicity in a Kunming mouse model. The diuretic effects of the extracts were compared to that of hydrochlorothiazide in rats. In addition, compound isolation procedures, cell assays of Na-Cl cotransporter inhibition and rat diuretic test of monomeric compounds were conducted to identify the active ingredients in the extract. Subsequently, homology modeling and molecular docking were performed to explain the reason behind the diuretic activity observed. Finally, LC-MS analysis was used to elucidate the underlying mechanism of action of P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching. RESULTS No toxicity was observed in mice administered P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching extracts. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the most significant diuretic effect. Similar results were obtained during the analysis for Na+ content in rat urine. Further separation of P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching components led to the isolation of methyl chlorogenate, 2',3'-dihydroxy propyl pentadecanoate, and β-carotene. Results from cell assays showed that the Na-Cl cotransporter inhibitory activity of methyl chlorogenate was greater than that of hydrochlorothiazide. This result was again confirmed by the diuresis tests of monomeric compounds in rats. The molecular simulations explain the stronger interactions between the methyl chlorogenate and Na-Cl cotransporter. Of the compounds determined using LC-MS analysis, 185 were identified to be mostly organic acids. CONCLUSIONS P. petiolosa possesses significant diuretic activities without any obvious toxicity, with least two possible mechanisms of action. Further study on this herb is warranted.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore effects of indica rice addition, rice soaking time and rice soup addition on total sugar and alcohol content of semi-dry Hakka rice wine (HRW) and compare its difference in physicochemical properties and volatiles with traditional sweet rice wine (TSRW) via HPLC, GC-MS and E-tongue. The optimal fermentation conditions of semi-dry HRW were 50 % indica rice addition, 12 h rice soaking time and 85 % rice soup addition. The total sugar (16.13 mg/mL) of semi-dry HRW was significantly lower than that of TSRW (135.79 mg/mL), especially the trehalose, glucose, sucrose and maltose. Its alcohol content was significantly higher than that of TSRW. There were significant differences in volatile components between semi-dry HRW and TSRW, especially esters, alcohols and ketones, but no significant differences in organic acids and amino acids. Results obtained could provide reference data for improving the fermentation process and quality of semi-dry HRW.

Abstract
Fermentation is considered an effective tool for improving the functional characteristics of food. In this study, Lacticaseibacillus casei YQ336 was used to ferment yellow whey, and physical and chemical analysis was performed to identify the changes in the nutritional components and antioxidant activity of the fermented yellow whey. Non-targeted metabolomics was used to study the transformation of small molecular substances in the fermented yellow whey. After 48 h of pure culture fermentation with L. casei YQ336, the pH of yellow whey decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the content of total acids, organic acids, sugars, total phenols, and total flavonoids and the antioxidant activity showed a significant increase (p < 0.05). A total of 628 differential metabolites were identified between fermented and unfermented yellow whey samples, of which 293 were upregulated and 335 were downregulated. After fermentation, due to the growth and metabolic activity of L. casei YQ336, meaningful metabolites such as homovanillic acid, lactic acid, oxalic acid, L-glutamic acid, and phenylalanine, as well as phenyllactic acid, gallic acid, and genistein were produced. This increased the organic acid content and antioxidant activity of yellow whey. The findings provide a theoretical and practical basis for further research on the bio-functional activity of yellow whey and the recycling and utilization of food by-products.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION Different lupin species exhibited varied biomass, P allocation, and physiological responses to P-deprivation. White and yellow lupins had higher carboxylate exudation rates, while blue lupin showed the highest phosphatase activity. White lupin (Lupinus albus) can produce specialized root structures, called cluster roots, which are adapted to low-phosphorus (P) soil. Blue lupin (L. angustifolius) and yellow lupin (L. luteus), which are two close relatives of white lupin, do not produce cluster roots. This study characterized plant responses to nutrient limitation by analyzing biomass accumulation and P distribution, absorption kinetics and root exudation in white, blue, and yellow lupins. Plants were grown in hydroponic culture with (64 µM NaH2PO4) or without P for 31 days. Under P limitation, more biomass was allocated to roots to improve P absorption. Furthermore, the relative growth rate of blue lupin showed the strongest inhibition. Under + P conditions, the plant total-P contents of blue lupin and yellow lupin were higher than that of white lupin. To elucidate the responses of lupins via the perspective of absorption kinetics and secretion analysis, blue and yellow lupins were confirmed to have stronger affinity and absorption capacity for orthophosphate after P-deprivation cultivation, whereas white lupin and yellow lupin had greater ability to secrete organic acids. The exudation of blue lupin had higher acid phosphatase activity. This study elucidated that blue lupin was more sensitive to P-scarcity stress and yellow had the greater tolerance of P-deficient condition than either of the other two lupin species. The three lupin species have evolved different adaptation strategies to cope with P deficiency.

Abstract
Organic acids are employed as scale dissolvers in the oil & gas industry during production to stimulate oil recovery by pumping in the formations. Corrosion of metallic surfaces in organic acid solutions poses a significant issue in the oil and gas sector. In recent years, considering the stringent environmental regulations, there has been a growing research interest in environmentally safe inhibitors. This paper explores the synthesis of 2-(3-(carboxymethyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl) acetate (IZ) and its first-time application for corrosion mitigation of N80 steel in 20% formic acid. A detailed experimental study involving gravimetric, electrochemical, and surface analytical techniques is reported herein. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) analyses suggest a rise of impedance with IZ and a mixed-type inhibition behavior, respectively. The inhibition efficiency (IE) is 99.54% at 200 mg/L at 308 K, reaching 99.4% at 363 K with the introduction of KI as a synergistic agent. Computational studies revealed that the inhibitor IZ gets protonated in the experimental environment. The protonated form shows a tendency to receive electrons from the metal surface and shows a greater energy of adsorption compared to that of the neutral form.

Abstract
Oxidation of chromium (Cr)-bearing minerals by manganese (Mn) oxides is viewed as the dominant mechanism controlling geogenic production of Cr(VI) and its contamination of groundwater. This process may be modulated by other chemical constituents found in the natural environment, but such confounding factors have not been quantified. Here, we evaluated the mechanism of Cr(III) oxidation by mixed-valence Mn oxide in the presence of citric and gallic acids, two natural organic matter (NOM) constituents commonly found in the soil environment. Incubation experiments showed that each organic acid enhanced solubilization of Cr(III) and Mn over controls without organic addition but increasing organic acid concentration decreased production of Cr(VI), with approximately 8.5 times less Cr(VI) produced in the citric acid than gallic acid experiments. X-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that negligible Cr(VI) was present in solid-phase reaction products, regardless of treatment. Geochemical modeling revealed that in the citric acid experiments, unprotonated Cr(III)-citrate was the dominant organo-metallic complex in solution, while (CrOH)2+ distribution positively correlated with concentrations of Cr(VI) produced. Collectively, these results illustrate how NOM can modify expected chemical pathways driving Cr cycling, and such mechanistic information should be better integrated into models predicting Cr redox dynamics and availability in the environment.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of dilution rates (D) (0.05, 0.15, and 0.4 h-1) and its transition mode strategies (constant, up, and down modes) on organic acid productivity and bacterial community structure on continuous meta-fermentation using complex microorganisms. The number of bacterial species decreased with increasing D in the constant mode while up and down modes maintained high and low values, respectively, regardless of the changing D values. Caldibacillus hisashii was the predominant species in all modes at all D values, while other bacterial species, including Anaerosalibacter bizertensis and Clostridium cochlearium were predominant in only certain modes and D values. The highest total organic acid productivity of 3.16 g L-1 h-1 was obtained with 82.2% lactic acid selectivity at D = 0.4 h⁻1 in constant mode. Heterofermentation occurred in the up mode, while the down mode exhibited the maximum butyric acid productivity of 0.348 g L-1 h-1 with 43.8% selectivity at D = 0.05 h-1. The constant, up, and down modes showed the distinct main products of lactic, acetic and formic, and butyric acids, respectively. In this study, we proposed a new parameter of species-specific productivity (SSP) to estimate which species and how much a bacterium quantitatively contributes to the targeted organic acid productivity in continuous meta-fermentation. SSP was determined based on the abundance of functional genes encoding key enzymes from the results of 16S amplicon analysis. In conclusion, D values and their transition modes affect productivity by changing the bacterial community structure, and are a significant factor in establishing a highly productive process in continuous meta-fermentation.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) is the most prevalent element in the earth crust and is toxic to plants in acidic soils. However, plants can address Al toxicity through external exclusion (which prevents Al from entering roots) and internal detoxification (which counterbalances the toxic-Al absorbed by roots). Nowadays, certain categories of exogenously added regulatory factors (EARF), such as nutritional elements, organic acids, amino acids, phytohormones, or biochar, etc. play a critical role in reducing the bioavailability/toxicity of Al in plants. Numerous studies suggest that regulating factors against Al toxicity mediate the expression of Al-responsive genes and transcription factors, thereby regulating the secretion of organic acids, alkalizing rhizosphere pH, modulating cell wall (CW) modifications, improving antioxidant defense systems, and promoting the compartmentalization of non-toxic Al within intracellular. This review primarily discusses recent and older published papers to demonstrate the basic concepts of Al phytotoxicity. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive explanation of the crucial roles of EARF-induced responses against Al toxicity in plants. This information may serve as a foundation for improving plant resistance to Al and enhancing the growth of susceptible species in acidic soils. And this review holds significant theoretical significance for EARF to improve the quality of acidic soils cultivated land, increase crop yield and quality, and ensure food security.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of organic acid-soaking (malic, citric, tartaric, and succinic acid) and sonication on the formation of flavor and α-dicarbonyl compounds in Robusta (C. canephora syn. Coffea robusta) green beans were investigated. A total of 20 volatile compounds were identified in Robusta coffee. Furfural and 5-methyl furfural, two dominant volatile compounds in Arabica coffee, increased after organic acid pretreatment. In Robusta coffee processed from 3% malic acid-soaked coffee beans, furfural and 5-methyl furfural increased by 90.99% and 24.92%, respectively, compared to the control. In Robusta coffee processed from 3% malic acid-sonicated (280 W, 1 h) coffee beans, furfural and 5-methyl furfural increased by 236.03% and 114.77%, respectively. α-Dicarbonyls (glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and diacetyl) were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in all Robusta coffees after organic acid pretreatment. In Robusta coffee processed from coffee beans soaked and sonicated in tartaric acid solution, the α-dicarbonyls decreased by up to 44% and 58%, respectively, compared to the control. This study suggested the pretreatment methods to enhance the flavor substances and reduce the α-DCs in Robusta coffee.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of using calcium anacardate (CaA) as a source of anacardic acid and its association with citric acid (CA) in diets for breeding quails on the performance, the egg quality, incubation parameters, and progeny performance. Were used 540 quails European quails (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) that were 21 weeks old, housed in laying cages based on a completely randomized design, with nine treatments and six replications of 10 quails per parcel, with each experimental unit having eight females and two males. The following additions to the diet were evaluated: 1, no addition (control diet); 2, 0.25% CaA; 3, 0.25% CaA and 0.25% CA; 4, 0.50% CaA; 5, 0.50% CaA and 0.25% CA; 6, 0.50% CaA and 0.50% CA; 7, 0.75% CaA; 8, 0.75% CaA and 0.25% CA; and 9, 0.75% CaA and 0.50% CA. The treatments had no significant effects on the performance of the breeding quails, incubation parameters, and progeny performance. For egg quality, there was only an effect on yolk lipid oxidation, which was lower for eggs from quails fed the diets containing 0.50% CaA and 0.25% CA, 0.50% CaA and 0.50% CA, or 0.75% CaA alone, when compared with the control group. Considering that including CaA with or without CA in diets for breeding quails only affected yolk lipid oxidation, it can be recommend including 0.50% CaA and 0.25% CA or 0.75% CaA alone to mitigate oxidative damage in the yolk of fertile eggs.

Abstract
Broomcorn millet (BM) is a future smart food. However, no information is available on the metabolism of BM grains under alkaline stress. In this study, the effects of alkaline stress on nonvolatile and volatile metabolites in the BM grains of two varieties (S223 and T289) were investigated through metabolomics approaches. All 933 nonvolatile metabolites and 313 volatile metabolites were identified, with 114 and 89 nonvolatile metabolites and 16 and 20 volatile metabolites accumulating differentially under normal vs. alkaline stresses of S223 and T289, respectively. The results indicated that alkaline stress altered phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, flavone and flavonol, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, as well as arginine, proline, tryptophan, and ascorbate metabolism. The effects of alkaline stress were not identical between the two varieties, which could lead to variations in active substance content. These results provide valuable information for further studies on food chemistry and the functional food development of BM grains.

Abstract
Gelatinized starch sauce, one of the sub-ingredients have been widely used in kimchi for their roles in increasing viscosity of kimchi seasoning, and fermentation. Gelatinized glutinous rice (GGR), which is one of the most used starch sources in kimchi preparation. However, GGR is accelerated to the fermentation process but lead to a reduction in the shelf life of the kimchi. Therefore, in this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using maltodextrin (MD) as a novel starch source instead of GGR to slow down the rate of kimchi fermentation. The properties of the kimchi with MD and GGR fermentation (free sugar content, organic acid content, pH, and acidity) as well as their microbial growth rates after 12 days of fermentation were compared. After fermentation of 12 days, the free sugar of GGR-kimchi (GGRK) increased more rapidly than those of MD-kimchi (MDK), while higher sugar alcohol (mannitol) and organic acid contents were observed for GGRK than for MDK. Furthermore, initial aerobic and lactic acid bacteria counts were higher for GGRK than for MDK. These results indicate that fermentation proceeds at a slower rate in MDK than in GGRK, and they will provide a basis for further research into storage of kimchi. Abstract
Mouding sufu, a traditional fermented soybean product in China, has been recognized by the public in the southwestern regions of China. To reveal the microbial community succession and their relationship with the flavor formation during the natural fermentation of Mouding sufu, microbial community, non-volatile flavor compounds and volatile flavor compounds were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing, high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography ion migration spectroscopy, respectively. The results showed that Lactobacillus and Klebsiella were the most abundant bacterial genus, whereas the main fungal genera were unclassified-f-Dipodascaeae and Issatchenkia. In addition, Glutamic acid, Aspartic acid, Alanine, Valine, Lysine, Histidine, lactic acid, succinic acid, and acetic acid were the main non-volatile flavor substances. Furthermore, the taste activity values of glutamic acid, aspartic acid and lactic acid reached 132, 68.9, 18.18 at H60, respectively, meaning that umami and sour were the key taste compounds. Simultaneously, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate-M, ethyl propanoate, methyl 2-methylbutanoate, ethyl 2-methylbutanoate, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate-D, ethyl isobutyrate, linalool-M, linalool-D, cis-4-heptenal, 2-methylpropanal were the characteristic volatile flavor of Mouding sufu. Finally, correlation analysis showed that g__Erwinia and g__Acremonium correlated with most of the key aroma compounds. 20 bacteria and 21 fungi were identified as core functional microbe for Mouding sufu production.

Abstract
Understanding the intricate interplay between Cd accumulation in plants and their rhizosphere micro-characteristics is important for the selection of plant species with profitable Cd phytoextraction and soil remediation efficiencies. This study investigated the differences in rhizosphere micro-ecological characteristics and Cd accumulation in chicory, Ixeris polycephala, sunflower, and Sedum alfredii in low-moderate Cd-contaminated soil. Data reveal that the dominant organic acids in rhizosphere soil that responded to Cd were oxalic and lactic acids in chicory and Ixeris polycephala, tartaric acid in sunflower, and succinic acid in Sedum alfredii. These unique organic acids could also influence the abundance of specific rhizobacterial communities in rhizosphere soil that were Sphingomonadaceae and Bradyrhizobiaceae in both Sedum alfredii (9.75 % and 2.56 %, respectively) and chicory (8.98 % and 2.82 %, respectively) rhizosphere soil, Xanthomonadaceae in both Sedum alfredii and Ixeris polycephala rhizosphere soil, and Gaiellaceae in chicory rhizosphere soil. In this case, the combined effects of the organic acids and unique rhizobacterial communities by plant species increased the bioavailable concentration of Cd in Sedum alfredii, Ixeris polycephala, and sunflower rhizosphere soil, while decreasing the Cd-DOM concentrations in chicory rhizosphere soil and the water-extractable Cd reduced by 88.02 % compared to the control. Though the capacity for Cd accumulation in the shoots of chicory was weaker than of Sedum alfredii but better than either Ixeris polycephala or sunflower, chicory presented better Cd translocation and harbored Cd mainly as the low toxic chemical form of pectates and proteins-bound Cd and Cd oxalate in its shoot. Generally, chicory, as an economic plant, is suitable for phytoremediation of low-moderate Cd-contaminated soil after Sedum alfredii.

Abstract
Most aged tea has superior sensory qualities and good health benefits. The content of organic acids determines of the quality and biological effects of aged tea, but there are no reports of the effect of storage on the composition and relative proportion of acidic compounds in black tea. This study analyzed and compared the sourness and metabolite profile of black tea produced in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 using pH determination and UPLC-MS/MS. In total, 28 acidic substances were detected, with 17 organic acids predominating. The pH of black tea decreased significantly during storage from pH 4.64 to pH 4.25 with significantly increased in l-ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, benzoic acid and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The metabolic pathways ascorbate biosynthesis, salicylate degradation, toluene degradation, etc. were mainly enriched. These findings provide a theoretical basis to regulate the acidity of aged black tea.

Abstract
Mineralization reactions in basaltic formations have gained recent interest as an effective method for CO2 geo-storage in order to mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. The CO2/rock interactions, including interfacial tension and wettability, are crucial factors in determining the CO2 trapping capacity and the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in these formations. The Red Sea geological coast in Saudi Arabia has many basaltic formations, and their wetting characteristics are rarely reported in the literature. Moreover, organic acid contamination is inherent in geo-storage formations and significantly impacts their CO2 geo-storage capacities. Hence, to reverse the organic effect, the influence of various SiO2 nanofluid concentrations (0.05-0.75 wt%) on the CO2-wettability of organic-acid aged Saudi Arabian (SA) basalt is evaluated herein at 323 K and various pressures (0.1-20 MPa) via contact angle measurements. The SA basalt substrates are characterized via various techniques, including atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and others. In addition, the CO2 column heights that correspond to the capillary entry pressure before and after nanofluid treatment are calculated. The results show that the organic acid-aged SA basalt substrates become intermediate-wet to CO2-wet under reservoir pressure and temperature conditions. When treated with SiO2 nanofluids, however, the SA basalt substrates become weakly water-wet, and the optimum performance is observed at an SiO2 nanofluid concentration of 0.1 wt%. At 323 K and 20 MPa, the CO2 column height corresponding to the capillary entry pressure increases from -957 m for the organic-aged SA basalt to 6253 m for the 0.1 wt% nano-treated SA basalt. The results suggest that the CO2 containment security of organic-acid-contaminated SA basalt can be enhanced by SiO2 nanofluid treatment. Thus, the results of this study may play a significant role in assessing the trapping of CO2 in SA basaltic formations.

Abstract
The effects of Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus hilgardii and citric acid on organic acid production, substrate consumption, protein degradation and microbial community were investigated in this study. The results indicated that combined inoculants induced a significant increase in levels of lactic acid (43 g/kg dry matter), acetic acid (14 g/kg dry matter), butyric acid (5 g/kg dry matter), total organic acid (60 g/kg dry matter) and ammonia nitrogen (20 g/kg total nitrogen). Furthermore, citric acid addition into the combined inoculants caused a significant increase in levels of acetic acid (12 g/kg dry matter), water-soluble carbohydrate (12 g/kg dry matter) and a reduction in ammonia nitrogen formation (22 g/kg total nitrogen). Microbiologically, combining inoculants and citric acid enriched Lactobacillus buchneri and Lactobacillus hilgardii and upregulated the functional pathways related to acid production and resistance. Collectively, combining citric acid and heterofermentative inoculants was beneficial to recycle Chinese cabbage waste in producing organic acids.

Abstract
The enhancement effects of co-pigmentation on thermal stability of roselle anthocyanin extract (RAE) were investigated. The introduction of organic acids maintained color stability of RAE, and RAE co-pigmented with oxalic acid (OA) presented less color fading rates (19.46 ± 0.33 %) and higher redness (41.33 ± 3.51). Subsequently, suitable co-pigmentation concentration (OA:RAE = 1:2) was obtained regarding with lower ΔE (48.70 ± 2.36). Then, improvement behaviors of co-pigmentation on OA-RAE were evaluated. Results demonstrated that OA-RAE exhibited better thermal stability, as manifested by larger retention rates and more favorable thermal degradation kinetic parameters. Furthermore, both molecular docking simulation and experimental structural characterization revealed that hydrogen bonds and other non-covalent bonds made up the main parts of molecular interactions, leading to formation of stable binary complex. As a result, the aromatic ring of RAE was protected. In conclusion, the co-pigmentation of RAE via introduction of OA was effective in stability enhancement due to the generation of molecular bindings.

Abstract
Biotin is an essential coenzyme that is bound to carboxylases and participates in fatty acid synthesis. The fact that sake yeast exhibit biotin prototrophy while almost all other Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains exhibit biotin auxotrophy, implies that biotin prototrophy is an important factor in sake brewing. In this study, we inserted a stop codon into the biotin biosynthetic BIO3 gene (cording for 7,8-diamino-pelargonic acid aminotransferase) of a haploid sake yeast strain using the marker-removable plasmid pAUR135 and investigated the fermentation profile of the resulting bio3 mutant. Ethanol production was not altered when the bio3 mutant was cultured in Yeast Malt (YM) medium containing 10% glucose at 15 °C and 30 °C. Interestingly, ethanol production was also not changed during the sake brewing process. On the other hand, the levels of organic acids in the bio3 mutant were altered after culturing in YM medium and during sake brewing. In addition, ethyl hexanoate and isoamyl acetate levels decreased in the bio3 mutant during sake brewing. Metabolome analysis revealed that the decreased levels of fatty acids in the bio3 mutant were attributed to the decreased levels of ethyl hexanoate. Further, the transcription level of genes related to the synthesis of ethyl hexanoate and isoamyl acetate were significantly reduced. The findings indicated that although the decrease in biotin biosynthesis did not affect ethanol production, it did affect the synthesis of components such as organic acids and aromatic compounds. Biotin biosynthesis ability is thus a key factor in sake brewing.

Abstract
In this study, a lactic acid bacterium, Enterococcus faecium, was found to prevent CaCO3 precipitation through its metabolism. On analysis of all stages of E. faecium growth, static jar tests demonstrated that stationary phase E. faecium broth possessed the highest inhibition efficiency of 97.3% at a 0.4% inoculation dosage, followed by the decline and log phases with efficiencies of 90.03% and 76.07%, respectively. Biomineralization experiments indicated that E. faecium fermented the substrate to produce organic acid, which resulted in modulation of the pH and alkalinity of the environment and thus inhibited CaCO3 precipitation. Surface characterization techniques indicated that the CaCO3 crystals precipitated by the E. faecium broth tended to be significantly distorted and formed other organogenic calcite crystals. The scale inhibition mechanisms were revealed by untargeted metabolomic analysis on log and stationary phase E. faecium broth. In total, 264 metabolites were detected, 28 of which were differential metabolites (VIP ≥ 1 and p < 0.05). Of these, 15 metabolites were upregulated in stationary phase broth, and 13 metabolites were downregulated in log phase broth. Metabolic pathway analysis suggested that improved glycolysis and the TCA cycle were the main reasons for enhancement of the antiscaling performance of E. faecium broth. These findings have significant implications for microbial metabolism-induced CaCO3 scale inhibition.

Abstract
Corrugated surface microparticles comprising levofloxacin (LEV), chitosan and organic acid were prepared using the 3-combo spray drying method. The amount and the boiling point of the organic acid affected the degree of roughness. In this study, we tried to improve the aerodynamic performance and increase aerosolization by corrugated surface microparticle for lung drug delivery efficiency as dry powder inhaler. HMP175 L20 prepared with 175 mmol propionic acid solution was corrugated more than HMF175 L20 prepared with 175 mmol formic acid solution. The ACI and PIV results showed a significant increase in aerodynamic performance of corrugated microparticles. The FPF value of HMP175 L20 was 41.3% ± 3.9% compared with 25.6% ± 7.7% of HMF175 L20. Corrugated microparticles also showed better aerosolization, decreased x-axial velocity, and variable angle. Rapid dissolution of drug formulations was observed in vivo. Low doses administered to the lungs achieved higher LEV concentrations in the lung fluid than high doses administered orally. Surface modification in the polymer-based formulation was achieved by controlling the evaporation rate and improving the inhalation efficiency of DPIs.

Abstract
Organic acids (OAs) are a class of feed additives that have prophylactic and inhibitory properties against pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we investigated growth performance, innate immune response, gut microbiota, and disease resistance against Francisella orientalis F1 in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed different doses of Bacti-nil®Aqua, a blend of short- and medium-chain OAs. For 21 days, 680 juvenile tilapias were fed a control diet or diets supplemented with a 0.3% (D3) or 0.5% (D5) OA blend. The feed conversion rate of fish fed the 0.5% enriched diet was considerably lower (p < 0.05) than that of the fish fed the basal diet. Lysozyme and serum bactericidal activities were significantly elevated following OA administration. After infection, no differences in the diversity and composition of gut microbiota were observed between the groups. After the bacterial challenge, the mortality was significantly lower in group D5 (p < 0.01). The diet supplemented with Bacti-nil®Aqua (Adisseo) improved the immune response and resistance of tilapia juveniles against F. orientalis infection. Thus, this OA blend could serve as a feed additive with good activity against F. orientalis.

Abstract
Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash usually needs to undergo dechlorination or heavy metal stabilization pretreatment for further treatment, recycling or disposal. In this paper, the removal effect of chlorine in fly ash by water washing, lactic acid, citric acid and microwave treatment was studied, and XANES was used to analyze chlorine chemical form in fly ash. In addition, the heavy metals in fly ash were also checked. The results indicated that double washing and triple washing could remove 88.0 % and 95.5 % of chlorine from fly ash respectively. The "double water washing + microwave/organic acid" could remove about 96.6 % of chlorine, and 42.9 % and 47.2 % of insoluble chloride respectively. The microwave treatment could maximize the stabilization of heavy metals with a BI value of 39.1 %, 0.11 %, 1.65 %, 15.4 % and 3.98 % for Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn. The elution of heavy metals by citric acid was obvious. "Double water washing + citric acid" removed 87.0 % of Cd, 17.2 % of Cr, 11.9 % of Cu, 39.6 % of Pb and 43.6 % of Zn, but the environmental risk of Cu and Cr increased about 2-3 % after the treatment. The results of this study provide guidance for the pretreatment of fly ash before resource utilization.

Abstract
Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria play a key role in increasing plant growth as potential suppliers of soluble phosphorus and have great potential for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted soils. However, the soil and microbiological mechanisms by which phosphate-solubilizing bacteria prevent heavy metal absorption in radish have not been adequately studied. Here, the mechanisms of phosphorus solubilization, Cd and Pb immobilization, and the inhibition of heavy metal absorption by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria were studied in radish through solution adsorption and pot experiments. Two phosphate-solubilizing bacteria with high Cd and Pb removal rates (46.9-97.12 %), Klebsiella sp. M2 and Kluyvera sp. M8, were isolated. The soluble phosphorus content released by strains M2 and M8 was 265-277 mg L-1, achieved by secreting oxalic acid, ascorbic acid, citric acid, and succinic acid in an inorganic phosphorus medium containing 3 mg L-1 Cd and 5 mg L-1 Pb. Furthermore, these two functional strains induced the formation of Pb2(PO4)2, Cd(PO3)2, Fe2Pb3(PO4)2, CdS, and PbS precipitates that immobilized Cd and Pb in the solution. In general, strains M2 and M8 inhibited the absorption of Cd and Pb by radish by the following mechanisms: i) bacterial cell wall adsorption, ii) induction of Pb2(PO4)2, Cd(PO3)2, Fe2Pb3(PO4)2, CdS, and PbS precipitation in the solution/soil, iii) increases in the Ca2P and FeP contents in the radish rhizosphere, and iv) the promotion of bacterial community enrichment toward phosphorus-solubilizing and plant growth-promoting properties (Ramlibacter, Enterobacter, Bacillus, Gemmatimonas, and Lysinibacillusin) in the radish rhizosphere. These results provide bacterial resources and technical approaches to heavy metal pollution amelioration and efficient phosphorus fertilizer use in farmland.

Abstract
Bioleaching is a promising route for electrolytic manganese (Mn) residue (EMR) reutilization due to being eco-friendly and cost-effective. However, microbes with high bioleaching efficiency are scarce. This work aimed to isolate, screen, and characterize a novel fungal strain with high Mn-bioleaching efficiency from EMR, and study the kinetics and mechanism. The novel Penicillium oxalicum strain Z6-5-1 was found to selectively bioleach Mn from EMR. A maximum Mn2+ recovery of 93.3 % was achieved after 7 days and was mainly dependent upon acidolysis of the bio-organic acids, specifically gluconic acid and oxalic acid, as well as mycelial biosorption. This efficiency was the highest reported in the literature for a fungus over such a short time. EMR strongly induced P. oxalicum to produce gluconic acid and oxalic acid. The novel transcription factor PoxCxrE of P. oxalicum controlled the production of bio-organic acids by regulating the expression of rate-limiting enzyme genes involved in the biosynthesis of bio-organic acids. Scanning electron microscopy, laser particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed to analyze EMR changes after bioleaching. This study provides an alternative fungal resource for Mn-bioleaching of EMR, and a novel target for metabiotic engineering to improve bio-organic acid production.

Abstract
Fulvic acid (FA) can significantly alleviate cadmium (Cd) stress, but the specific metabolic response of FA to Cd toxicity is still not clarified. In the present study, we used untargeted metabolomic [gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)] analysis to profile cucumber metabolism in response to Cd stress after spray application of FA. Our results showed that 331 differentially enriched metabolites (DEMs) were identified in leaf materials. These DEMs were enriched in 21 shared pathways in comparative groups of "Cd treatment vs. the control treatment" and "FA + Cd treatment vs. the Cd treatment." Specifically, treatment with FA significantly enhanced the organic acid content (citric acid, isocitric acid, 2-oxoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, and malic acid), which would contribute to provide sufficient substrates for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and amino acid biosynthesis, thereby ensuring the normal production of energy and amino acid. At the same time, FA significantly increased the amino acid content (aspartate, citrulline, histidine, leucine, and phenylalanine). The accumulation of organic acid and amino acid can act as chelating agents for heavy metal ions and as scavengers of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby reducing intracellular oxidative damage. Furthermore, the application of FA improves antioxidant enzymes and accelerates ROS clearance. The improved contents of organic acid and amino acid, and the increased activity of antioxidant enzymes both played a central role in the reduction of malondialdehyde (MDA, 14.08%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2, 61.70%) contents, and superoxide anion radical (O2-, 30.41%) production rate in plants under Cd stress. Taken together, the present study demonstrates the effects of FA on the antioxidant capacity and carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism of cucumber seedlings exposed to Cd stress, which provides comprehensive insights into the regulation of plants' response to Cd toxicity with FA was applied in cucumber.

Abstract
The atmospheric wet deposition has been recognized as a significant allochthonous source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean. However, few studies have examined the biolability of rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the molecular level. Rainwater samples were collected and incubated with ambient microbes. DOC, UV-vis spectroscopy, formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICRMS) were applied. Approximately 50 ± 16 % of rainwater DOC and ~90 % of FA and AA were bioconsumed within 28 days. The contribution of FA and AA to the total BDOC was ~30 %, which was the largest known biolabile fraction in rainwater DOC. In contrast, only approximately 15 % of formulae identified by FT-ICRMS were consumed, which were characterized by higher saturation, higher heteroatom content and lower modified aromaticity. Among the major high molecular weight secondary organic carbon (HWW-SOC)-like compounds, organosulfate contained the largest fraction of consumed formulae, while biogenic volatile organic-derived CHO compounds had the lowest. Our study for the first time provided both quantitative and qualitative understanding of the bioavailability of rainwater DOM, which is essential for understanding their effects on the biogeochemical cycles and the environmental health in the receiving waters.

Abstract
The combination of levulinic acid (LVA) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in recent years has shown a considerable potential to use as an antimicrobial intervention. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of the combination against Staphylococcus aureus in both planktonic and biofilm states and to investigate the transcriptional changes in S. aureus biofilms coincubated with sublethal concentrations of LVA and/or SDS. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of LVA and SDS determined by the microdilution method were 3.125 and 0.039 mg/mL, respectively. An additive bacteriostatic interaction (fractional inhibitory concentration index = 1) between the two compounds was observed by the checkerboard assay, whereas a synergistic bactericidal activity was displayed by the time-kill assay. The biomass and viable cells in the biofilms were reduced by both antimicrobials either alone or in combination in a dose-dependent manner. Transcriptomics indicated that more differentially expressed (DE) genes were observed in the biofilm treated with SDS (103 up- and 205 downregulated DE genes) and LVA + SDS (187 up and 162 down) than that coincubated with LVA (34 up and 32 down). The SDS and LVA + SDS treatments mainly affected the expression of genes responsible for cell surface proteins, virulence factors, adhesins, and capsular polysaccharides. Both the antibiofilm assay and the transcriptomics indicated that SDS, not LVA, was the major chemical contributing to the antibacterial efficacy of the combination. This study reveals the behavioral responses and protective mechanisms of S. aureus to LVA and SDS applied individually or in combination.

Abstract
Land use is an effective way to reduce carbon emission in the recycling process of municipal sludge compost; meanwhile, heavy metals (HMs) in the sludge can be phytoextracted by ornamental plants. As an eco-friendly soil amendment, citric acid (CA) has been reported to be of great potential aid to phytoremediation, and its effect on ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) extraction of HMs (Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd) from municipal sewage sludge compost-amended (MSSC) soils has been investigated through pot experiments in the study. The growth of ryegrass was significantly promoted under 2 and 4 mmol kg-1 CA treatments. The concentrations of HMs in MSSC soil after 45-day planting were significantly reduced ([Formula: see text]), and they were further reduced except for Cu while CA treated. The acid-extractable fraction of HMs in the soil was increased significantly as CA treated, and further improvement could be found when CA dose increased, which was due to the decreased soil pH and the complexation of CA with metal ions. The phytoremediation factor (PRF) was proposed to assess the phytoremediation efficiency, which was obtained as a ratio of the product of the biomass and metal concentration of plant shoot between the CA-treated group and the control group. When the CA dose was 6 mmol kg-1, the average PRF of five heavy metals reached 2.29, and Cd was the highest (3.72), demonstrating that CA had great promotion on phytoremediation of heavy metals. This study made a contribution to the research of phytoremediation in sludge land use by demonstrating ryegrass as an ideal bioaccumulator for heavy metals, especially for Cd.

Abstract
Low phosphorus utilization and phosphorus fertilizer pollution are serious issues primarily affecting soil health. To investigate the effects of biochar on the growth, phosphorus solubilization, and metabolites of phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), rice husk biochar (RH) and rice straw biochar (RS) were incubated with Bacillus megatherium (BM1) and Bacillus mucilaginosus (BM2), respectively. The highest phosphorus solubilization was observed in BM2 following the addition of RS. The dissolved amount of phosphorus was 244.99 mg/L, which was 43.86% higher than that of the control group. Hence, biochar can improve the phosphorus solubilization capacity of PSB by affecting the organic acid and polysaccharide contents, and phosphatase activity secreted by the PSB, as the porous structure and surface characteristics of biochar ensured the adsorption of PSB. This study can help improve the functional activity of PSB and provide basis for improving the utilization of soil phosphorus, which in turn, aid in the development of biochar-based microbial fertilizers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Organic acids are important components that determine the fruit flavor of peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch). However, the dynamics of organic acid diversity during fruit ripening and the key genes that modulate the organic acids metabolism remain largely unknown in this kind of fruit tree which yield ranks sixth in the world. RESULTS In this study, we used 3D transcriptome data containing three dimensions of information, namely time, phenotype and gene expression, from 5 different varieties of peach to construct gene co-expression networks throughout fruit ripening of peach. With the network inferred, the time-ordered network comparative analysis was performed to select high-acid specific gene co-expression network and then clarify the regulatory factors controlling organic acid accumulation. As a result, network modules related to organic acid synthesis and metabolism under high-acid and low-acid comparison conditions were identified for our following research. In addition, we obtained 20 candidate genes as regulatory factors related to organic acid metabolism in peach. CONCLUSIONS The study provides new insights into the dynamics of organic acid accumulation during fruit ripening, complements the results of classical co-expression network analysis and establishes a foundation for key genes discovery from time-series multiple species transcriptome data.

Abstract
Kishu-Narezushi is a spontaneously fermented food comprising fish, rice, and salt. During spontaneous fermentation, the microbiome may differ among batches, even when manufactured in the same way. In addition, analyses of changes in chemical composition of the product are important for clarifying flavor characteristics. We collected basic information on the microbiome and chemical composition of Kishu-Narezushi using multiple batches of fermentation, and evaluated whether the microbiome was homogeneous. The fungal microbiome of Kishu-Narezushi was dominated by Saccharomycetales and Trichosporonales. The bacterial microbiome was diverse, although seven specific genera of lactic acid bacteria were identified. Glutamic acid, histidine, and serine levels decreased after approximately 10 days of fermentation. Succinic acid, characteristic of Kishu-Narezushi, accumulated upon the consumption of glutamic acid. Though the microbiome was diverse, the chemical composition was similar among the batches.

Abstract
A new functional composite was synthesized in this study comprising magnetic-cored dendrimer (MCD) modified with citric acid (CA), succinic acid (SA), and vanillic acid (VA) terminal groups. The CA-MCD, SA-MCD, and VA-MCD exhibited average particle size of 8-18 nm and superparamagnetic behavior. Adsorption potential of the composite was assessed by monitoring methylene blue (MB) removal from contaminated water. The CA-MCD attained adsorption equilibrium in 30 min while SA-MCD and VA-MCD achieved equilibrium in 60 min. The Langmuir model better fitted the adsorption results than the Freundlich model, indicating a monolayer mode of MB adsorption on the composite. Maximum adsorption capacity of CA-MCD, SA-MCD, and VA-MCD was 216.30 mg/g, 184.29 mg/g, and 196.58 mg/g, respectively. The CA-MCD exhibited best adsorption performance by removing 99% MB at pH = 11. In reusability experiments, the CA-MCD, SA-MCD, and VA-MCD maintained over 90% MB adsorption for both 15 mg/L and 50 mg/L solutions in the third cycle. Overall, the organic acid-functionalized MCDs with high adsorption capacity and reusability potential showed utility for practical application for wastewater decontamination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence and types of inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) in high-risk children using mass spectrometry techniques. METHODS Children considered high-risk for IEM were screened for metabolic diseases during a 3-y period. Dried blood spots and urine samples were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GCMS). Samples with abnormal amino acids were confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS Eight hundred and twenty-two suspected cases were evaluated; of which, 87 possible cases of IEMs were identified. Homocystinuria (n = 51) was the most common IEM detected followed by biotinidase deficiency (n = 7), glutaric aciduria type 1 (n = 7), and carnitine uptake defect (n = 6). Overall, there were 45 (51.7%) cases of organic acidemia, 31 cases (35.6%) of amino acid defect, 9 (10.3%) cases of fatty-acid oxidation disorders, and 2 (2.3%) cases of probable mitochondrial disorder. CONCLUSION IEMs are common in India, with a hospital-based incidence of 1 in approximately 6642 among high-risk children. Screening of high-risk children by mass spectrometry techniques is a valuable strategy for early diagnosis of IEMs where universal newborn screening is not yet available.

Abstract
Fe biofortification and Cd mitigation in rice is essential for human health, thus the effects of fertilization with Fe on Cd uptake and distribution in rice need to be comprehensively studied. In this study, we investigated the roles of root iron (Fe)/manganese (Mn) plaques, root cell wall, organic acid, and expressions of Cd-transport related genes in restricting Cd uptake and translocation. The rice plants were exposed to 1 μM CdCl2 with or without the addition of three doses of Fe at 5, 50, and 500 μM EDTA-Na2Fe. The results showed that increasing supply of Fe remarkably reduced Cd accumulation in the shoots, mainly because of inhibited translocation of Cd from roots to shoots. As compared to 5 μM Fe treatment, 500 μM Fe significantly increased the ionic soluble pectin (ISP) content and decreased citric acid (CA) in the roots, thereby providing more Cd-binding sites in the cell wall of roots and reducing the mobility of Cd in xylem. Plant Fe status-mediated CA act as the main chelator for Cd mobilization, rather than through decreasing the pH. However, the plants supplied with low Fe or excess Fe facilitated the uptake of Cd in rice roots, as low Fe up-regulated the expression of Cd-transport related genes and excess Fe enhanced Cd enrichment on the root by iron plaque. Importantly, soil fertilization with Fe strongly reduced Cd accumulation in rice grain. Thus, optimizing the soil environmental Fe could effectively reduce Cd accumulation in the shoots by immobilizing Cd in the roots.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are attractive alternatives to synthetic colorants, but their low stability impedes practical applications. Intermolecular copigmentation can enhance both color intensity and stability. Herein, the copigmentation interactions of Kyoho grape skin anthocyanins (KSA) or cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy-G) with organic acids were investigated. Color enhancement was evaluated at different acid molar ratios and treatment temperatures. The optimal copigmentation effects were observed for KSA/tannic acid (1:150) and Cy-G/tannic acid (1:100). Based on enthalpy variation, KSA/ferulic acid and Cy-G/ferulic acid exhibited the highest stability. The distinct color differences observed in the presence of different acids were attributed to structural effects. The influence of ferulic acid on various anthocyanins was also evaluated using theoretical approaches. Owing to steric hindrance, the acyl groups in KSA affected the spatial conformation, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals interactions of the complexes. Further, hydroxyl groups decreased complex stability. These findings contribute to furthering the understanding of copigmentation effects.

Abstract
Naturally occurring organic acids (OAs) have demonstrated satisfactory effects in inhibiting common pathogens on fresh produce; however, their effectiveness on "big six" Escherichia coli serotypes, comprised of E. coli O26:H11, O45:H2, O103:H11, O111, O121:H19 and O145, remained unaddressed. Regarding this, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), the sanitising efficacy and the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms of 10-min treatments with 0.2 mol/L ascorbic acid (AA), citric acid (CA) and malic acid (MA) against the "big six" strains on pea sprouts were thoroughly investigated in this study. Despite the varying antimicrobial efficacy (AA: 0.12-0.99, CA: 0.36-1.72, MA: 0.75-3.28 log CFU/g reductions), the three OAs induced consistent metabolic changes in the E. coli strains, particularly in the metabolism of membrane lipids, nucleotide derivatives and amino acids. Comparing all strains, the most OA-resistant strain, O26 (0.36-1.12 log CFU/g reductions), had the largest total amino acids accumulated to resist osmotic stress; its ulteriorly suppressed cell activity further strengthened its endurance. In contrast, the lowest OA-resistance of O121 (0.99-3.28 log CFU/g reductions) might be explained by the depletion of putrescine, an oxidative stress regulator. Overall, the study sheds light on the effectiveness of a dual-platform metabolomics investigation in elucidating the metabolic responses of "big six" E. coli to OAs. The manifested antimicrobial effects of OAs, especially MA, together with the underlying metabolic perturbations detected in the "big six" strains, provided scientific basis for applying OA treatments to future fresh produce sanitisation.
