Recent advances in bismuth oxychalcogenide nanosheets for sensing applications

This review offers insights into the fundamental properties of bismuth oxychalcogenides Bi2O2X (X = S, Se, Te) (BOXs), concentrating on recent advancements primarily from studies published over the past five years. It examines the physical characteristics of these materials, synthesis methods, and their potential as critical components for gas sensing, biosensing, and optical sensing applications. Moreover, it underscores the implications of these advancements for the development of military, environmental, and health monitoring devices.

Photocatalytic activity evaluation of polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 assisted synthesis of 1D oxygen-vacancy-rich Bi5O7BrxI1-x nanorod solid solution

The unique layered structure of bismuth halide oxide has led to an extensive application in the degradation of refractory antibiotics from water environments. With the aid of regulating the energy band structure of photocatalytic materials and equilibrating the response towards visible light and redox ability, a novel oxygen-vacancy-rich Bi5O7BrxI1-x nanorod solid solution was synthesized by polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 assisted solvothermal method, and its photocatalytic behavior was investigated for the degradation of antibiotic levofloxacin under visible light. The degradation rate of the optimal Bi5O7Br0.5I0.5 to levofloxacin can reach 82.7% within 30 min, which is 9.22 and 4.74 times higher than those of the monomers Bi5O7Br and Bi5O7I. The catalyst of Bi5O7Br0.5I0.5 shows 99.88% antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. The efficient photocatalytic ability of the Bi5O7Br0.5I0.5 is resulted from the alteration of energy band structure and suppression of charge recombination due to benign changes in the electronic and crystal structures. Furthermore, both various characterizations and Density Functional Theory calculations reveal that a multitude of oxygen vacancies exist in the Bi5O7Br0.5I0.5. The photocatalytic degradation pathways were explored and the toxicity of the intermediates was also appraised. The present work provides a mild and feasible construction of solid solutions and introduction of oxygen vacancies to eliminate environmentally refractory organic pollutants with photocatalytic technology.

Comprehensive Insights into the Family of Atomically Thin 2D-Materials for Diverse Photocatalytic Applications

2D materials with their fascinating physiochemical, structural, and electronic properties have attracted researchers and have been used for a variety of applications such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, energy storage, magnetoresistance, and sensing. In recent times, 2D materials have gained great momentum in the spectrum of photocatalytic applications such as pollutant degradation, water splitting, CO2 reduction, NH3 production, microbial disinfection, and heavy metal reduction, thanks to their superior properties including visible light responsive band gap, improved charge separation and electron mobility, suppressed charge recombination and high surface reactive sites, and thus enhance the photocatalytic properties rationally as compared to 3D and other low-dimensional materials. In this context, this review spot-lights the family of various 2D materials, their properties and their 2D structure-induced photocatalytic mechanisms while giving an overview on their synthesis methods along with a detailed discussion on their diverse photocatalytic applications. Furthermore, the challenges and the future opportunities are also presented related to the future developments and advancements of 2D materials for the large-scale real-time photocatalytic applications.

Fast detection of Staphylococcus aureus using thiol-functionalized WS2 quantum dots and Bi2O2Se nanosheets hybrid through a fluorescence recovery mechanism

Ultrafast and sensitive detection of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a harmful Gram-positive human pathogenic bacterium, by two-dimensional layered materials continues to be a challenge. Herein, we have studied the sensing of S. aureus using a tungsten disulfide (WS2) quantum dot (QD) and bismuth oxyselenide (Bi2O2Se) nanosheet (NS) hybrid through their unique optical functionalities. The WS2 QDs of a mean diameter of 2.5 nm were synthesized by liquid exfoliation. Due to the quantum confinement and functional groups, the WS2 QDs exhibit high fluorescence (FL) yield under UV excitation. The addition of Bi2O2Se NSs resulted in the adsorption of WS2 QDs on their surface, resulting in quenching of the FL emission due to nonfluorescent complex formation between the WS2 QDs and Bi2O2Se NSs. A specific sequencing single-standard DNA (ssDNA) aptamer, which identifies and explicitly binds with S. aureus, was attached to the defect sites of the WS2 QDs for selective detection. The thiol-modified ssDNA aptamers attach covalently to the WS2 QD defect sites, which was confirmed by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interaction of S. aureus with the aptamer functionalized WS2 QDs weakens the van der Waals interaction between the WS2 QDs and Bi2O2Se NSs, which results in the detachment of the WS2 QDs from the Bi2O2Se NS surface and restores the FL intensity of the WS2 QDs, thus allowing the efficient detection of S. aureus. Similar measurements with non-targeted bacteria show that the system is quite selective towards S. aureus. Our FL-based biosensor has a linear response in the range of 103-107 CFU mL-1 (colony formation unit mL-1) with a detection limit of 580 CFU mL-1. We have observed a fast response time of 15 minutes for sensing, which is superior to the previous reports. The proposed system was tested in human urine and can detect S. aureus in human urine samples selectively, proving its potential in real-life applications. The reported approach is versatile enough for sensing other biomolecules and metal ions by choosing suitable receptors.
