Continuous inactivation of human adenoviruses in water by a novel g-C3N4/WO3/biochar memory photocatalyst under light-dark cycles

Enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance of carbon and oxygen co-doped carbon nitride with a three-dimensional structure: Performance and mechanism study

As a cost-effective photocatalyst, carbon nitride (g-C3N4) holds tremendous promise for addressing energy shortages and environmental pollution. However, its application is limited by disadvantages such as low specific surface area and easy recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. This study introduces C and O co-doped g-C3N4 with a three-dimensional (3D) structure achieved through a straightforward one-step calcination process, demonstrating excellent photocatalytic activity of hydrogen production and oxytetracycline degradation, with superoxide radicals as the primary active species. We propose a plausible enhanced mechanism based on systematic characterizations and density functional theory calculations. The 3D structure confers a substantial specific surface area, enhancing both the adsorption area and active sites of catalysts while bolstering structural stability. Co-doping optimizes the band structure and electric conductivity of the catalyst, facilitating rapid migration of photogenerated charges. The synergistic effects of these enhancements significantly elevate the photocatalytic performance. This study presents a convenient and feasible method for the preparation of dual-regulated photocatalysts with outstanding performance.

Round-the-Clock Adsorption-Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride by Ag/Ni-TiO2

The synergy of adsorption and photocatalysis is a good method to remove organic pollutants in wastewater. In recent decades, persistent photocatalysis has gained considerable interest for its ability to sustain the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants in the dark. Herein, we report three different TiO2 nanomaterials to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in solution. We found that the removal ability of TiO2, Ni-TiO2, and Ag/Ni-TiO2 is 8.8 mg/g, 13.9 mg/g and 23.4 mg/g, respectively, when the initial concentration of TCH is 50 mg/L. Chemical adsorption could be the rate-determining step in the TCH adsorption process. Moreover, Ag nanoparticles dispersed on Ni doped TiO2 surface act as traps to capture photo-generated electrons upon illumination with indoor light. The holes in Ag/Ni-TiO2 serve as critical oxidative species in TCH degradation under dark conditions. This work provides new insights into the design of persistent photocatalysts that can be activated by weak illumination and degrade organic pollutants in wastewater after sunset.

WO3-x nanorods/rGO/AgBiS2 Z-scheme heterojunction with comprehensive spectrum response and enhanced Fenton and photocatalytic activities

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics and dyes are the prevalent water contaminants, and their removal from the water through photocatalysis is a plausible approach. However, most semiconductors in their pristine form need to be improved to be exploited in photocatalysis owing to poor photoresponse, intense carrier recombination, and inertness without irradiation. Herein, we demonstrate the modification of defective WO3-x by rGO and AgBiS2 in the form of WO3-x/rGO/AgBiS2 (R2). It exploits the superior conductivity and synergism of rGO to inhibit carrier recombination; thereby, Z-scheme heterojunction with AgBiS2 provides high redox potential. Defects in WO3-x enable electron (e-) storage in R2, which decomposes H2O2 to generate ROS without irradiation. Owing to these essences and broad-spectrum response, it removed 93.72, 82.77, and 84.82% of TC during photo-Fenton (PFR), night-Fenton (NFR), and photocatalytic (PCR) reactions, respectively. Its removal rates reached 94.74, 81.54, and 87.50% against rhodamine B (RhB) during PFR, NFR, and PCR, respectively. It is superior to memory catalysis (MC) and conventional Fenton reactions (CFR) because it can perform without and with irradiation across a broader pH range. So, this work is conducive to designing WO3-x-based catalysts to combat environmental and energy crises.

Impact of surface topography and hydrophobicity in varied precursor concentrations of tenorite (CuO) films: a study of film properties and photocatalytic efficiency

Semiconductor films are crucial in photocatalysis applications, yet their controlled production remains challenging. Previous studies have mainly focused on deposition processes, heating rates, and doping of semiconductor oxides. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for fabricating tenorite (CuO) semiconductor films with varying precursor concentrations (0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.1 g/ml) using a dip-coating technique. We explore the impact of contact angles, 3D surface topography, and film thickness on photoactivation properties, areas with limited previous research focus. The results demonstrate that higher-concentration tenorite films (0.1 g/ml) exhibit rougher surfaces (77.3 nm), increased hydrophobicity (65.61°), improved light-harvesting ability, enhanced charge separation, and higher active oxygen output. The crystal sizes were within the range of 7.3-44.1 nm. Wettability tests show a 21.47% improvement in the 0.1 g/ml film surface under indirect sunlight compared to darkness. Transmittance rates in the 600 nm range were from 0.02 to 90.94%. The direct optical band gaps were 1.21-2.74 eV, while the indirect band gaps remained unaffected (0.9-1.11 eV). Surface morphology analysis reveals an increased presence of grains with higher concentrations. Regarding photocatalysis's impact on film morphology and copper content, SEM images reveal minimal changes in film structure, while copper content remains stable with slight variations. This suggests strong adhesion of tenorite to the film after photocatalysis. Tenorite thin films display exceptional photocatalytic efficiency, making them suitable for practical applications.

Photocatalytic degradation of fluoranthene in soil suspension by TiO2/α-FeOOH with enhanced charge transfer capacity

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil are potentially harmful to human health. However, the use of photocatalysis technology to treat soil contaminated with PAHs remains challenging. Therefore, TiO2/α-FeOOH composite photocatalyst has been synthesized by hydrothermal method and sol-gel method and applied to photocatalytic degradation of fluoranthene in soil. The morphology, elements, crystal structure, optical properties, electrochemical characteristics, and photocatalytic activity of TiO2/α-FeOOH have been characterized. Results showed that TiO2 is tightly fixed on the surface of α-FeOOH, and TiO2/α-FeOOH had higher photocatalytic activity on photocatalytic degradation of fluoranthene in soil under simulated sunlight. The degradation efficiency of TiO2/α-FeOOH is 3.0 and 4.8 times higher than that of TiO2 and α-FeOOH, respectively. This is attributed to enhanced photocatalytic ability by enhancing the transfer capacity of electrons and holes and broadening the spectrum absorption range. The highest degradation efficiency was achieved when the pH of the soil is neutral, the ratio of water/soil is 10:1, and the dosage of catalyst is 50 mg/g. In addition, it was proved that •O2-, h+, and 1O2 are the main active substances in the photocatalysis of TiO2/α-FeOOH. The possible mechanism of a Z-type electron transfer structure was also proposed. The degradation products of fluoranthene were detected, and the degradation pathway was deduced.

Recent advances and new insights on the construction of photocatalytic systems for environmental disinfection

Photocatalysis, as a sustainable and environmentally friendly green technology, has garnered widespread recognition and application across various fields. Especially its potential in environmental disinfection has been highly valued by researchers. This study commences with foundational research on photocatalytic disinfection technology and provides a comprehensive overview of its current developmental status. It elucidates the complexity of the interface reaction mechanism between photocatalysts and microorganisms, providing valuable insights from the perspectives of materials and microorganisms. This study reviews the latest design and modification strategies (Build heterojunction, defect engineering, and heteroatom doping) for photocatalysts in environmental disinfection. Moreover, this study investigates the research focuses and links in constructing photocatalytic disinfection systems, including photochemical reactors, light sources, and material immobilization technologies. It studies the complex challenges and influencing factors generated by different environmental media during the disinfection process. Simultaneously, a comprehensive review extensively covers the research status of photocatalytic disinfection concerning bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It reveals the observable efficiency differences caused by the microstructure of microorganisms during photocatalytic reactions. Based on these influencing factors, the economy and effectiveness of photocatalytic disinfection systems are analyzed and discussed. Finally, this study summarizes the current application status of photocatalytic disinfection products. The challenges faced by the synthesis and application of future photocatalysts are proposed, and the future development in this field is discussed. The potential for research and innovation has been further emphasized, with the core on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and strengthening the practical application of photocatalysis in environmental disinfection.

Minimizing CO2 emissions by photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH3OH over Li2MnO3/WO3 heterostructures under visible illumination

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to valuable fuels has proved to be a favourable process to produce renewable energy and reduce CO2 emissions, which mostly depends on designing effective photocatalysts with the rapid separation rate of charge carriers. In this contribution, mesoporous n-n heterojunction Li2MnO3/WO3 nanocomposites were designed via a simplistic sol-gel process for CO2 reduction utilizing visible illumination (λ > 420 nm). XRD and TEM measurements confirmed the synthesized Li2MnO3/WO3 nanocomposite is a monoclinic structure, and its particle size is 25 ± 5 nm. The obtained Li2MnO3/WO3 exhibited narrower bandgap energy (1.74 eV), larger surface area (212 m2g-1), exceedingly visible absorbing, and lower recombination of electron and hole. The yield of CH3OH was determined about 198, 871, 1140, 1550 and 1570 mmolg-1 for bare WO3 and 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% Li2MnO3/WO3 nanocomposites, respectively. These results evidenced that the 15% Li2MnO3/WO3 photocatalyst exhibited the best reduction ability compared to other nanocomposites. The CO2 reduction over 15% Li2MnO3/WO3 photocatalyst achieved a maximal CO2 conversion with the substantially boosted CH3OH, i.e., 1550 mmolg-1 after 9 h, which was enhanced 7.8 folds great than of WO3 NPs. Mesoporous Li2MnO3/WO3 nanocomposites, in comparison with bare WO3 NPs, created more active sites for facilitating CO2 and had a specific electric field to more effectively separate charge carriers. The Li2MnO3/WO3 photocatalyst has superior photostability during the continuous reduction of CO2 for 45 h with no remarkable decrease. The possible direct S-scheme mechanism for electron transfer over Li2MnO3/WO3 photocatalyst with the enhanced CO2 reduction ability was discussed. The present work demonstrates an avenue for building highly effective heterostructure photocatalysts in solar-energy-induced potential applications.

Recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for water contaminants treatment: strategies to improve photocatalytic performance

Toxic organic pollutants in wastewater have seriously damaged human health and ecosystems. Photocatalytic degradation is a potential and efficient tactic for wastewater treatment. Among the entire carbon family, biochar has been developed for the adsorption of pollutants due to its large specific surface area, porous skeleton structure, and abundant surface functional groups. Hence, combining adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition, TiO2-biochar photocatalysts have received considerable attention and have been extensively studied. Owing to biochar's adsorption, more active sites and strong interactions between contaminants and photocatalysts can be achieved. The synergistic effect of biochar and TiO2 nanomaterials substantially improves the photocatalytic capacity for pollutant degradation. TiO2-biochar composites have numerous attractive properties and advantages, culminating in infinite applications. This review discusses the characteristics and preparation techniques of biochar, presents in situ and ex situ synthesis approaches of TiO2-biochar nanocomposites, explains the benefits of TiO2-biochar-based compounds for photocatalytic degradation, and emphasizes the strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts. Finally, the main difficulties and future advancements of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysis are highlighted. The review gives an exhaustive overview of recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for organic contaminants removal and is expected to encourage the development of robust TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for sewage remediation and other environmentally friendly uses.

MXene derived Ti3C2/TiO2/Ag persistent photocatalyst with enhanced electron storage capacity for round-the-clock degradation of organic pollutant

Persistent photocatalysis has garnered significant attention due to its ability to sustain catalytic activity in dark by storing electrons. However, the practical application of persistent photocatalysis is hindered by limited electron storage capacity. Herein, we synthesized and demonstrated that Ti3C2/TiO2/Ag persistent photocatalyst has good electron storage capability. The electron storage capacity of Ti3C2/TiO2/Ag is up to 0.125 μmol/mg, which is 2.5 times that of Ti3C2/TiO2. The enhanced electron storage capacity resulted in improved dark-reaction activity because more electrons react with oxygen to form more radicals, as evidenced by degradation experiments of various organics. Especially, persistent photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by Ti3C2/TiO2/Ag was achieved under natural outdoor conditions (from 2:00p.m. to 8:00p.m.). Additionally, the aid of oxidants such as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) can further improve the dark-reaction activity. TiO2/Ti3C2/Ag/PMS system exhibits excellent efficacy in removing tetracycline hydrochloride, oxytetracycline, rhodamine b, methyl orange, and methylene blue, with removal rates reaching 79.5 %, 81.4 %, 98.9 %, 99.1 %, and 99.2 %, respectively (15 min of light-reaction and 45 min of dark-reaction). This work provides a new strategy to enhance electron storage capacity and demonstrates that decoupling of light-reaction and dark-reaction may provide a new opportunity for photocatalytic removal of pollutants around the clock.

Visible light-driven H2O2 synthesis over Au/C3N4: medium-sized Au nanoparticles exhibiting suitable built-in electric fields and inhibiting reverse H2O2 decomposition

Visible light-driven H₂O₂ production presents the unique merits of sustainability and environmental friendliness. The size of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) determines their dispersion and electronic structure and greatly affects their photocatalytic activity. In this work, a series of sized Au NPs over C₃N₄ were modulated for H₂O₂ production. The results show that there is a volcanic trend in H₂O₂ with the decrease of Au particle size, and the highest H₂O₂ production rate of 1052 μmol g^-1 h^-1 is obtained from medium-sized Au particles (∼8.7 nm). The relationship between structure and catalytic performance is supported by experimental and theoretical methods. (1) First, medium-sized Au NPs promote photon absorption, and have a suitable built-in electric field at the heterojunction, which can be successfully tuned to achieve a more efficient h⁺-e^- spatial separation. (2) Second, medium-sized Au NPs enhance O₂ adsorption, and create selective 2e^- O₂ reduction reaction sites. (3) Particularly, medium-sized Au NPs promote the desorption of produced H₂O₂ and inhibit H₂O₂ decomposition, finally leading to the highest H₂O₂ selectivity. Excellent catalytic performance will be obtained by finely optimizing the particle size in a certain range. This work provides a new idea for preparing high efficiently photocatalysts for H₂O₂ production.
