MgAl-LDH nanoflowers as a novel sensing material for high-performance humidity sensing

This work details a novel application of MgAl-LDH nanoflowers, applied in the fabrication of humidity sensors using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). An oscillating circuit approach has been utilized to thoroughly investigate the humidity detection characteristics of QCM sensors that are fabricated using MgAl-LDH nanoflowers. The examination encompassed various parameters such as the sensors' response, humidity hysteresis, repeatability, and stability. Experimental results clearly indicate that these MgAl-LDH nanoflower-based QCM sensors exhibit a distinct logarithmic frequency response to varying moisture levels. Notably, the sensitivity of the sensors is intricately tied to the amount of MgAl-LDH nanoflowers utilized during the deposition process. Moreover, these sensors maintain remarkable stability across a wide humidity range spanning from 11% to 97% RH. Additionally, the MgAl-LDH nanoflower-based QCM sensors possess minimal humidity hysteresis and display swift dynamic response and recovery periods, further highlighting their potential for humidity detection applications.

Synergistic effect and mechanism of nZVI/LDH composites adsorption coupled reduction of nitrate in micro-polluted water

In this study, nZVI/LDH composites were prepared by loading nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) on layered double hydroxide (LDH) surface for adsorption coupled reduction of nitrate (NO3--N). The results showed that the removal of NO3--N and total nitrogen (TN) by the nZVI/LDH composites was 88.64% and 77.63%, respectively, with a selectivity of 55.21% for N2 and only 1.86% for ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) within 180 min. The valence states of various N forms during the adsorption-reduction process were investigated. The mechanism of synergistic adsorption-reduction degradation of NO3--N was proposed by measuring the contents of NO3--N, nitrite (NO2--N), and NH4+-N in the aqueous and adsorbed phases in the reaction process, including rapid adsorption of initial NO3--N, chemical reduction of adsorbed NO3--N and resorption of the final product. The nZVI/LDH also maintained up to 82.56% NO3--N removal in natural water, with aging experiments proved that the composites maintained 60.48% NO3--N removal after 15 days. Therefore, the composites may have great application prospects for NO3--N removal in micro-polluted water.

Porous metal-organic framework-acrylamide-chitosan composite aerogels: Preparation, characterization and adsorption mechanism of azo anionic dyes adsorbed from water

Micro- and nano-metal-organic frameworks with different adsorption properties were prepared by a time-modulation hydrothermal method. By comparing the adsorption properties, the most effective MIL-68(Fe)-12 was selected to be mixed with chitosan (CS), and porous metal-organic framework-acrylamide-chitosan composite aerogel (PMACA) was prepared by introducing acrylamide prior to glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The adsorption capacity of PMACA doped with acrylamide was as high as 2086.44 mg·g-1. The adsorption performance of PMACA was 1.48 times higher compared to the porous metal-organic framework-chitosan composite aerogel (PMCA) undoped with acrylamide. With the introduction of acrylamide, the stability of PMACA was improved, making it less prone to dispersion and decomposition. Structural characterization and adsorption properties were analyzed using methods such as XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, BET, and Zeta potential. The adsorption performance of PMACA was investigated further through batch tests with variables such as adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial CR solution concentration, and temperature. The model fitting of PMACA was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the Sips model. The adsorption thermodynamics showed that high temperature promoted spontaneous adsorption behavior. PMACA showed a recovery rate of approximately 86 % after six cyclic adsorption tests. PMACA maintained a recovery rate of roughly 86 % after six cyclic adsorption tests. The combined effects of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π conjugation resulted in excellent adsorption performance, while pore filling also contributed to the efficient adsorption of Congo red (CR).

Recycling and Reusing of Graphite from Retired Lithium-ion Batteries: A Review

The proliferation of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) over the past decade has led to a significant increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by these batteries reaching the end of their lifespan. With retired EVs becoming more prevalent, recycling and reusing their components, particularly graphite, has become imperative as the world transitions toward electric mobility. Graphite constitutes ≈20% of LIBs by weight, making it a valuable resource to be conserved. This review presents an in-depth analysis of the current global graphite mining landscape and explores potential opportunities for the "second life" of graphitefrom depleted LIBs. Various recycling and reactivation technologies in both industry and academia are discussed, along with potential applications for recycled graphite forming a vital aspect of the waste management hierarchy. Furthermore, this review addresses the future challenges faced by the recycling industry in dealing with expired LIBs, encompassing environmental, economic, legal, and regulatory considerations. In conclusion, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in recycling and reusing graphite from retired LIBs, offering valuable insights for forthcoming large-scale recycling efforts.

The model and mechanism of adsorptive technologies for wastewater containing fluoride: A review

With the continuous development of society, industrialization, and human activities have been producing more and more pollutants. Fluoride discharge is one of the main causes of water pollution. This review summarizes various commonly used and effective fluoride removal technologies, including ion exchange technology, electrochemical technology, coagulation technology, membrane treatment, and adsorption technology, and points out the outstanding advantages of adsorption technology. Various commonly used fluoride removal techniques as well as typical adsorbent materials have been discussed in published papers, however, the relationship between different adsorbent materials and adsorption models has rarely been explored, therefore, this paper categorizes and summarizes the various models involved in static adsorption, dynamic adsorption, and electrosorption fluoride removal processes, such as pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, Thomas and Clark dynamic adsorption models, including the mathematical equations of the corresponding models and the significance of the models are also comprehensively summarized. Furthermore, this comprehensive discussion delves into the fundamental adsorption mechanisms, quantification of maximum adsorption capacity, evaluation of resistance to anion interference, and assessment of adsorption regeneration performance exhibited by diverse adsorption materials. The selection of the best adsorption model not only predicts the adsorption performance of the adsorbent but also provides a better description and understanding of the details of each part of the adsorption process, which facilitates the adjustment of experimental conditions to optimize the adsorption process. This review may provide some guidance for the development of more cost-effective adsorbent materials and adsorption processes in the future.

Co-adsorption mechanisms of As(V) and Cd(II) by three-dimensional flower-like Mg/Al/Fe-CLDH synthesized by "memory effect"

Due to the different physical and chemical properties such as surface charge and ion morphology between As(V) and Cd(II), it is challenging to remove As(V) and Cd(II), especially at low concentrations. This study constructed a novel three-dimension nanocomposite adsorbent Mg/Al/Fe-CLDH (CFMA) by "hydrothermal + calcination method". And different initial concentration ratios (Cd: As=1: 2, 1: 1, 2: 1) were used to investigate the removal performance of CFMA for Cd(II) and As(V). When the concentration ratio Cd: As=1: 2, the residual concentrations of As(V) and Cd(II) were 8.7 μg/L and 4.2 μg/L, respectively, which met the drinking water standard; In the co-adsorption system, As(V) and Cd(II) influence each other's adsorption behavior due to the anionic bridge and shielding effect of As(V) on Cd(II), As(V) gradually changed from monolayer adsorption to multi-layer adsorption dominant, while Cd(II) gradually changed from multi-layer adsorption to monolayer adsorption dominant. In this paper, the structure-activity relationship between material structure and synchronous removal of arsenic and cadmium was clarified, and the mechanism of synchronous removal was revealed, which provided technical guidance for synchronous removal of As(V) and Cd(II) from non-ferrous metal smelting wastewater.

Functional hBN decorated Ni(OH)2 nanosheets synthesized for remarkable adsorption performance for the elimination of fluoride ions

Occurrence of fluoride in groundwater is a serious concern due to its fatal effects. Functionalized hexagonal boron nitride sheets have been combined with nickel hydroxide nanoparticles by a one step process and a hybrid adsorbent Ni(OH)2@hBN has been developed with an exceptionally high fluoride adsorption capacity of 365 mg g-1, higher than those of Ni(OH)2 and hBN. This maximum adsorption capacity is higher than those of most common adsorbents used for defluoridation including activated alumina, reported nickel oxide and carbon-based 2D material-supported alumina adsorbents. The presence of functionalized boron nitride significantly increased the surface area to 680 m2 g-1 with a pore volume of 0.33687 cm3 g-1 and provided rich hydroxyl group-containing surface sites for the removal of fluoride present in contaminated water. In addition, the adsorption of fluoride onto boron nitride-modified nickel hydroxide followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, suggesting a monolayer adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, the material developed is tested with the water sample collected from a real affected area, from the Dhar district of India, and the material showed promising results in terms of fluoride removal efficacy.

Selective determination of cuprous ion in copper dissolving solution based on bathocuproine-modified expanded graphite electrode

The presence of cuprous ions in the copper-dissolving solution significantly affects the microstructure of copper plated surface. Fewer quantitative analyses of cuprous ions in the copper foil productive process had rarely been involved so far. In the present work, a novel electrochemical sensor of the bathocuproine (BCP) modified expanded graphite (EG) electrode was developed for the selective determination of cuprous ions. EG has a large surface area, good adsorption, and excellent electrochemical performance which remarkably promoted analytical sensitivity. Meanwhile, the selective determination of the BCP-EG electrode for cuprous ions in the coexistence of ten thousand times of copper ions have been achieved on the benefit of the special coordination of BCP to cuprous ions. In the coexistence of 50 g/L copper ions, the analytical performance of the BCP-EG electrode for the determination of cuprous ions had been examined. The results represented a wide detection range of cuprous ions in the range of 1.0 μg/L-5.0 mg/L, with a low detection limit of 0.18 μg/L (S/N = 3) and the BCP-EG electrode has great selectivity to cuprous ions in presence of various interferences. The analytical selectively for cuprous ions supported by the proposed electrode would be a potential analytical tool for quality improvement in electrolytic copper foil manufacturing.

Functionally-designed floatable amino-modified ZnLa layered double hydroxides/cellulose acetate beads for tetracycline removal: Performance and mechanism

The over-reliance on tetracycline antibiotics (TC) in the animal husbandry and medical field has seriously affected the safety of the ecological environment. Therefore, how to effectively treat tetracycline wastewater has always been a long-term global challenge. Here, we developed a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI)/Zn-La layered double hydroxides (LDH)/cellulose acetate (CA) beads with cellular interconnected channels to strengthen the TC removal. The results of the exploration on its adsorption properties illustrated that the adsorption process exhibited a favorable correlation with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, namely monolayer chemisorption. Among the many candidates, the maximum adsorption capacity of TC by 10 %PEI-0.8LDH/CA beads was 316.76 mg/g. Apart from that, the effects of pH, interfering species, actual water matrix and recycling on the adsorption of TC by PEI-LDH/CA beads were also analyzed to verify their superior removal capability. The potential for industrial-scale applications was expanded through fixed-bed column experiments. The proven adsorption mechanisms mainly included electrostatic interaction, complexation, hydrogen bonding, n-π EDA effect and cation-π interaction. The self-floating high-performance PEI-LDH/CA beads exploited in this work provided fundamental support for the practical application of antibiotic-based wastewater treatment.

Confined self-assembly of S, O co-doped GCN short nanotubes/EG composite towards HMIs electrochemical detection and removal

In this paper, we prepared composites by confining S, O co-doped C₃N₄ short nanotubes (SOT) into the slit holes of expanded graphite (EG). The prepared SOT/EG composites had hierarchical pores. Macroporous and mesoporous were conducive to the permeation of heavy metal ions (HMIs) solution, while microporous were favorable for HMIs capture. In addition, EG had excellent adsorption and conductive properties. By leveraging their synergistic effect, SOT/EG composites could be used for electrochemical detection and removal of HMIs simultaneously. The excellent HMIs electrochemical detection and removal performances were due to the unique 3D microstructure and the increase of active sites such as S and O. When SOT/EG composites were prepared into modified electrodes, the limit of detections (LODs) of Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ were 0.038 and 0.051 μg L^-1 for simultaneous detection and 0.045 and 0.057 μg L^-1 for individual detection. When SOT/EG composites were used as adsorbents, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ solution of 10 mg L^-1 could reach 228.0 and 313.1 mg g^-1, and the adsorption efficiency was above 90%. Due to the low raw materials cost and simple preparation method, SOT/EG composite is a very promising bifunctional material for HMIs electrochemical detection and removal.

Composites of Layered Double Hydroxides and ANA-Type Zeolite Synthesized from Hazardous Secondary Aluminum Dross for Cationic Dye Wastewater Treatment

This work first transformed hazardous aluminum waste into low-cost MgAl−layered double hydroxide@ANA zeolite (LDHs@ANA) composite for dye wastewater adsorption, which was meaningful for waste recovery and pollution control. Based on this strategy, the Al(OH)3 extracted from secondary aluminum dross (a hazardous waste in the aluminum industry) was used as an aluminum source to synthesize LDHs@ANA composite, which had more excellent adsorption capacity to methylene blue than MgAl−LDHs and ANA alone. The composite consisted of spherical ANA particles uniformly covered with LDH nanosheets, which effectively avoided a large amount of aggregation between nanosheets and increased specific surface areas and pore volumes. The kinetic results indicated that the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption site was the main factor affecting the adsorption process. The equilibrium studies showed the adsorption process was exothermic, and the Langmuir model best fitted for the adsorption process, with a maximum adsorption capacity reaching 65.27 mg/g. Meanwhile, the effects of pH, adsorbent concentration, initial methylene blue concentration, and adsorption time on the LDHs@ANA were analyzed. Overall, this work provides a fresh concept for the preparation of low-cost adsorbents from aluminum waste.

Template-Free Synthesis of Magnetic La-Mn-Fe Tri-Metal Oxide Nanofibers for Efficient Fluoride Remediation: Kinetics, Isotherms, Thermodynamics and Reusability

The occurrence of fluoride contamination in drinking water has gained substantial concern owing to its serious threat to human health. Traditional adsorbents have shortcomings such as low adsorption capacity and poor selectivity, so it is urgent to develop new adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, renewable and no secondary pollution. In this work, magnetic electrospun La-Mn-Fe tri-metal oxide nanofibers (LMF NFs) for fluoride recovery were developed via electrospinning and heat treatment, and its defluoridation property was evaluated in batch trials. Modern analytical tools (SEM, BET, XRD, FTIR) were adopted to characterize the properties of the optimized adsorbent, i.e., LMF11 NFs with a La:Mn molar ratio of 1:1. The surface area calculated via BET method and pH_pzc assessed using pH drift method of LMF11 NFs were 55.81 m² g^-1 and 6.47, respectively. The results indicated that the adsorption amount was highly dependent on the pH of the solution, and reached the highest value at pH = 3. The kinetic behavior of defluoridation on LMF11 NFs was dominated by the PSO model with the highest fitted determination coefficients of 0.9999. Compared with the other three isotherm models, the Langmuir model described defluoridation characteristics well with larger correlation coefficients of 0.9997, 0.9990, 0.9987 and 0.9976 at 15 °C, 25 °C, 35 °C and 45 °C, respectively. The optimized LMF11 NFs exhibited superior monolayer defluoridation capacities for 173.30-199.60 mg F^-/g at pH 3 at 15-45 °C according to the Langmuir isotherm model. A thermodynamic study proved that the defluoridation by LMF11 NFs is a spontaneous, endothermic along with entropy increase process. In addition, the LMF11 NFs still showed high defluoridation performance after three reused cycles. These findings unveil that the synthesized LMF11 NFs adsorbent is a good adsorbent for fluoride remediation from wastewater owing to its low cost, high defluoridation performance and easy operation.
