Disturbance and restoration of soil microbial communities after in-situ thermal desorption in a chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated site

Higher thermal remediation temperature facilitates the sequential bioaugmented reductive dechlorination

The coupling of thermal remediation with microbial reductive dechlorination (MRD) has shown promising potential for the cleanup of chlorinated solvent contaminated sites. In this study, thermal treatment and bioaugmentation were applied in series, where prior higher thermal remediation temperature led to improved TCE dechlorination performance with both better organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) colonization and electron donor availability. The 60 °C was found to be a key temperature point where the promotion effect became obvious. Amplicon sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that temperature was a more dominating factor than bioaugmentation that impacted microbial community structure. Higher temperature of prior thermal treatment resulted in the decrease of richness, diversity of indigenous microbial communities, and simplified the network structure, which benefited the build-up of newcoming microorganisms during bioaugmentation. Thus, the abundance of Desulfitobacterium increased from 0.11 % (25 °C) to 3.10 % (90 °C). Meanwhile, released volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during thermal remediation functioned as electron donors and boosted MRD. Our results provided temperature-specific information on synergistic effect of sequential thermal remediation and bioaugmentation, which contributed to better implementation of the coupled technologies in chloroethene-impacted sites.

Theoretical assessment of influential factors and application in chlorinated hydrocarbon detection with membrane interface probe

The membrane interface probe (MIP) is an efficient and economical in-situ tool for chlorinated hydrocarbon (CH) contaminated site investigation. Given that the interpretation of MIP test is currently limited to a qualitative level, a theoretical model considering multiphase flow and multifield coupling is firstly proposed to simulate MIP test process. This model can consider phase change, membrane effect, adsorption and dissolution of the CH liquid, gas diffusion, and evaporation. Then, the model is used to study the changes in soil temperature and soil CH concentration during MIP test, as well as the influences of soil CH concentration and soil properties (initial water saturation, soil intrinsic permeability, and thermal properties) on MIP response. Finally, a simplified MIP interpretation model is developed based on parametric analysis results and verified against field and laboratory test data. It is found that the soil CH concentration, rather than soil properties, dominates the MIP response. The simplified interpretation model can deliver practical prediction of the CH concentration through the detected results by MIP, which may improve the applicability of MIP.

Quantitative tracing the sources and human risk assessment of complex soil pollution in an industrial park

Pollution in industrial parks has long been characterized by complex pollution sources and difficulties in identifying pollutant origins. This study focuses on a typical industrial park consisting of 11 factories (F1-F11) including organic pigment, inorganic pigment, and chemical factories in Hunan Province, China, here, a total of 327 sample points were surveyed. Eight pollutants (Mn, Cd, As, Co, NH3-N, l, 1,2-Trichloroethane, chlorobenzene, and petroleum hydrocarbons) were classified as contaminants of concern (COCs). This study assessed the contributions of driving factors to the distribution of COCs in the soil. Pollutant source apportionment was conducted using positive matrix factorization (PMF) and random forest (RF). The results revealed that the main factors driving pollution are groundwater migration, non-compliant emissions, leaks during production, and interactions among pollutants. The primary pollution sources were four chemical factories and an inorganic pigment factory. Source 5 demonstrates significant correlations with TCA (29.6%), CB (30%), and As (31.6%). Two chemical factories (F7 and F10) are the most significant pollution source with a risk assessment contribution rate of more than 60%. The present study sheds some light on the contamination characteristics, source apportionment and source-health risk assessment of COCs in industrial park. By utilizing the proposed research framework, decision-makers can effectively prioritize and address identified pollution sources.

Size-dependent influences of nanoplastics on microbial consortium differentially inhibiting 2, 4-dichlorophenol biodegradation

Nanoplastics (NPs), as a type of newly emerging pollutant, are ubiquitous in various environmental systems, one of which is coexistence with organic pollutants in wastewater, potentially influencing the pollutants' biodegradation. A knowledge gap exists regarding the influence of microbial consortium and NPs interactions on biodegradation efficiency. In this work, a 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) biodegradation experiment with presence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) with particle sizes of 100 nm (PS100) or 20 nm (PS20) was conducted to verify that PS-NPs had noticeable inhibitory effect on DCP biodegradation in a size-dependent manner. PS100 at 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L both prolonged the microbial stagnation compared to the control without PS-NPs; PS20 exacerbated greater, with PS20 at 100 mg/L causing a noticeable 6-day lag before the start-up of rapid DCP reduction. The ROS level increased to 1.4-fold and 1.8-fold under PS100 and PS20 exposure, respectively, while the elevated LDH under PS20 exposure indicated the mechanical damage to cell membrane by smaller NPs. PS-NPs exposure also resulted in a decrease in microbial diversity and altered the niches of microbial species, e.g., they decreased the abundance of some functional bacteria such as Brevundimonas and Comamonas, while facilitated some minor members to obtain more proliferation. A microbial network with higher complexity and less competition was induced to mediate PS-NPs stress. Functional metabolism responded differentially to PS100 and PS20 exposure. Specifically, PS100 downregulated amino acid metabolism, while PS20 stimulated certain pathways in response to more severe oxidative stress. Our findings give insights into PS-NPs environmental effects concerning microflora and biological degradation.

Disentangling the impact of biogas slurry topdressing as a replacement for chemical fertilizers on soil bacterial and fungal community composition, functional characteristics, and co-occurrence networks

The application of biogas slurry topdressing with drip irrigation systems can compensate for the limitation of traditional solid organic fertilizer, which can only be applied at the bottom. Based on this, we attempted to define the response of soil bacterial and fungal communities of maize during the tasseling and full maturity stages, by using a no-topdressing control and different ratios of biogas slurry nitrogen in place of chemical fertilizer topdressing. The application of biogas slurry resulted in the emergence of new bacterial phyla led by Synergistota. Compared with pure urea chemical topdressing, the pure biogas slurry topdressing treatment significantly enriched Firmicutes and Basidiomycota communities during the tasseling stage, in addition to affecting the separation of bacterial and fungal α-diversity indices between the tasseling and full maturity stages. Based on the prediction of community composition and function, the changes in bacterial and fungal communities caused by biogas slurry treatment stimulated the ability of microorganisms to decompose refractory organic components, which was conducive to turnover in the soil carbon cycle, and improved multi-element (such as sulfur) cycles; however it may also bring potential risks of heavy metal and pathogenic microbial contamination. Notably, the biogas slurry treatment reduced the correlation and aggregation of bacterial and fungal symbiotic networks, and had a dual effect on ecological randomness. These findings contribute to a deeper comprehension of the alterations occurring in soil microbial communities when substituting chemical fertilizers treated with biogas slurry topdressing, and promote the efficient and sustainable utilization of biogas slurry resources.

Lab-scale transport and activation of peroxydisulfate for phenanthrene degradation in soil: A comprehensive assessment of the remediation process, soil environment and microbial diversity

Electrokinetic transport followed by electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate is a novel in situ soil remediation method. However, the strategy of electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating and the comprehensive evaluation of restored soil need to be further explored. In this study, a lab-scale simulation device for in situ electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate was constructed to monitor the transport and transfer of peroxydisulfate, target pollutants, and process parameters, and the physicochemical properties and bacterial community of treated soil were evaluated. The results showed that adding 10 wt% peroxydisulfate to both the anode and cathode resulted in the optimized transfer rate and cumulative concentration of peroxydisulfate under electrokinetics. After 8 h, the cumulative concentration of peroxydisulfate reached 66.15- 166.29 mmol L-1, which was attributed to the migration of a large amount of S2O82- from the cathode to the soil under electromigration. Additionally, the anodic interfacial electric potential was improved, which was more conducive to electroosmotic transport of peroxydisulfate from the anode chamber. By alternating electrokinetic transport and electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate for two cycles, the phenanthrene degradation efficiency in four evenly distributed wells between electrodes reached 75.4 %, 87.6 %, 92.3 %, and 94.4 %. With slight variations in soil morphology and structure, the electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate elevated the soil fertility index. The abundance and diversity of bacterial communities in treated soil recovered to above the original soil level after 15 days. Our findings may support the application of electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate as a promising green ecological technology for the in situ remediation of organic-contaminated soil.
