Extraction of Reactive Orange 107 dye from aqueous stream using Triton X-114 surfactant: Quantum chemical calculations and experiment

Synthesis and characterization of cobalt nanoparticles for application in the removal of textile dye

In this work, magnetic cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) were synthesized and applied to the removal of Remazol golden yellow RNL (RGY) from aqueous solutions and textile wastewater. The CoNPs were characterized and the Co content found in the CoNPs was 60.38% (m/m). The analysis of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscopy indicated the presence of Co⁰ and CoO in the composition of the material, as confirmed by Thermogravimetric Analysis coupled to Mass Spectrometry (TG-MS). Images obtained by the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) showed that the CoNPs have sizes smaller than 10 nm, sphere morphology and high agglomeration capacity. The results obtained by nitrogen adsorption-desorption suggested that the nanomaterial presented a mesoporous characteristic, low specific surface area (15.70 m² g^-1) and a pore volume and pore diameter of 0.072 cm³ g^-1 and 3.64 nm, respectively. CoNPs removed the RGY with high efficiency, reaching almost 100% removal in 30 min. The kinetic results showed that the reaction followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Additionally, the removal process can be altered depending on the experimental condition. For instance, under acidic conditions, the reductive degradation prevailed, while in neutral or basic conditions, two simultaneous processes occur: reductive degradation and adsorption. Finally, CoNPs were applied to textile wastewater. The results showed high discoloration, reaching almost 88%. However, there was only a 32% decrease in chemical oxygen demand, showing that CoNPs are efficient at removing organic dyes from aqueous solutions.

A Simple Two-Step Cloud Point Extraction Process for Removing Fluorescent Whitening Agents VBL in Industrial Wastewater and Recycling of Surfactant

  With the enhancement of people's environmental consciousness, the treatment of wastewater was studied as the focus of this paper. Here we present a simple two-step extraction to realize efficient separation of fluorescent whitening agents VBL and cyclic utilization of surfactant to reduce the cost of wastewater treatment and environmental pollution. Firstly, the removal of VBL has been achieved by CPE using TX-114 as nonionic surfactant. The results showed that complete extraction was possible using 1% (w/w) TX-114 for VBL concentration not exceeding 17.5 mg/L, otherwise using a higher concentration of 1.5% (w/w) TX-114. Then the surfactant from the coacervate phase was recycled by changing the potential difference between phases. The morphology of micelles and solubilization mechanism of VBL were demonstrated through the observation of a fluorescent microscope. This method was successfully used to remove the VBL from wastewater sample and the surfactant could be reused several times.

A simple method for determination of carmine in food samples based on cloud point extraction and spectrophotometric detection

In this paper, a simple and cost effective method was developed for extraction and pre-concentration of carmine in food samples by using cloud point extraction (CPE) prior to its spectrophotometric determination. Carmine was extracted from aqueous solution using Triton X-100 as extracting solvent. The effects of main parameters such as solution pH, surfactant and salt concentrations, incubation time and temperature were investigated and optimized. Calibration graph was linear in the range of 0.04-5.0 μg mL(-1) of carmine in the initial solution with regression coefficient of 0.9995. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification were 0.012 and 0.04 μg mL(-1), respectively. Relative standard deviation (RSD) at low concentration level (0.05 μg mL(-1)) of carmine was 4.8% (n=7). Recovery values in different concentration levels were in the range of 93.7-105.8%. The obtained results demonstrate the proposed method can be applied satisfactory to determine the carmine in food samples.
