New PLA/PEI-functionalized Fe3O4 nanocomposite: Preparation and characterization

A tough, strong, and fast-curing phenolic resin enabled by dopamine-grafted chitosan and polyethyleneimine-functionalized graphene

Phenolic resins are widely used for outdoor and structural wood-based panels; however, they are challenged by high curing temperatures, low curing rates, and high brittleness. Inspired by lobster epidermis hardening, a tough, strong, and fast-curing phenolic resin (named DCS/PG/PF) was proposed herein. In this approach, dopamine-grafted chitosan (DCS) and polyethyleneimine-functionalized graphene (PEI@G) were incorporated into neat phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin. The gel time and maximum curing temperature of DCS/PG/PF resin were considerably reduced from 445 s and 147.8 °C for the neat PF resin to 317 s and 127.8 °C, respectively. This was attributed to the oxidative crosslinking of catechol moieties in DCS and amino groups in PEI@G within the naturally alkaline environment of phenolic resins in addition to the high reactivity between catechol moieties and PF chains as well as between amino and PF chains. The prepared resin demonstrated a dry bonding strength of 2.56 MPa, wet bonding strength of 1.81 MPa, and debonding work of 0.714 J, exhibiting a considerable increase of 16.9 %, 52.1 %, and 95.1 %, respectively, compared with those of the PF resin. These improvements were attributed to the dense organic-inorganic hybrid crosslinking network formed in the DCS/PG/PF. Furthermore, the DCS/PG/PF resin exhibited enhanced thermal stability.

PEI-based functional materials: Fabrication techniques, properties, and biomedical applications

Cationic polymers have recently attracted considerable interest as research breakthroughs for various industrial and biomedical applications. They are particularly interesting due to their highly positive charges, acceptable physicochemical properties, and ability to undergo further modifications, making them attractive candidates for biomedical applications. Polyethyleneimines (PEIs), as the most extensively utilized polymers, are one of the valuable and prominent classes of polycations. Owing to their flexible polymeric chains, broad molecular weight (MW) distribution, and repetitive structural units, their customization for functional composites is more feasible. The specific beneficial attributes of PEIs could be introduced by purposeful functionalization or modification, long service life, biocompatibility, and distinct geometry. Therefore, PEIs have significant potential in biotechnology, medicine, and bioscience. In this review, we present the advances in PEI-based nanomaterials, their transfection efficiency, and their toxicity over the past few years. Furthermore, the potential and suitability of PEIs for various applications are highlighted and discussed in detail. This review aims to inspire readers to investigate innovative approaches for the design and development of next-generation PEI-based nanomaterials possessing cutting-edge functionalities and appealing characteristics.

Sonochemical Synthesis of Magnetite/Poly(lactic acid) Nanocomposites

Nanocomposites based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and magnetite nanoparticles (MNP-Fe3O4) show promise for applications in biomedical treatments. One key challenge is to improve the stabilization and dispersion of MNP-Fe3O4. To address this, we synthesized MNP-Fe3O4/PLA nanocomposites using ultrasound mediation and a single iron(II) precursor, eliminating the need for surfactants or organic solvents, and conducted the process under ambient conditions. The resulting materials, containing 18 and 33 wt.% Fe3O4, exhibited unique thermal behavior characterized by two mass losses: one at a lower degradation temperature (Td) and another at a higher Td compared to pure PLA. This suggests that the interaction between PLA and MNP-Fe3O4 occurs through hydrogen bonds, enhancing the thermal stability of a portion of the polymer. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analysis supported this finding, revealing shifts in bands related to the terminal -OH groups of the polymer and the Fe-O bonds, thereby confirming the interaction between the groups. Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the PLA serves as a protective layer against the oxidation of MNP-Fe3O4 in the 18% MNP-Fe3O4/PLA nanocomposite when exposed to a high-power laser (90 mW). Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses confirmed that the synthetic procedure yields materials with dispersed nanoparticles within the PLA matrix without the need for additional reactants.

Synthesis of easily renewable and recoverable magnetic PEI-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles and its application for adsorption and enrichment of tungsten from aqueous solutions

Tungsten is a hazardous metal to human health and the environment, but it is also valuable. Previous studies have been limited to the adsorption and removal of tungsten, without considering its recovery and utilization. In this article, a renewable magnetic material, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles coated by polyethyleneimine (Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs), is synthesized and used for the adsorption of tungsten in water. Tungsten adsorption experiments were conducted under different initial tungsten concentrations, contact times, solution pH values, and co-existing anions. The results show that Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs efficiently and rapidly adsorb tungsten from water, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.24 mg/g. Under acidic conditions (pH ∼2), the adsorption performance of the NPs maximized. This is because tungstate ions polymerize under such conditions to form polytungstic anions. These are attracted to the positively charged surface of Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs by electrostatic attraction, followed by complexation reactions with the surface hydroxyl and amino groups of NPs, as evidenced by multiple spectroscopic methods. The NPs can be recovered and renewed and provide a potential application for the enrichment and recycling of high-value tungsten (W(VI)).

Mechanical, chemical, and bio-recycling of biodegradable plastics: A review

The extensive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics for various applications has led to global concerns regarding the severe environmental issues associated with them. However, biodegradable plastics are emerging as green alternatives to petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics, which include bio-based and petroleum-based biodegradable polymers, exhibit advantageous properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Furthermore, certain biodegradable plastics are compatible with existing recycling streams intended for conventional plastics and are biodegradable in controlled and/or predicted environments. Recycling biodegradable plastics before their end-of-life (EOL) degradation further enhances their sustainability and reduces their carbon footprint. Since the production of biodegradable plastic is increasing and these materials will coexist with conventional plastics for many years to come, it is essential to identify the optimal recycling options for each of the most prevalent biodegradable plastics. The substitution of virgin biodegradable plastics by their recyclates leads to higher savings in the primary energy demand and reduces global warming impact. This review covers the current state of the mechanical, chemical, and bio-recycling of post-industrial and post-consumer waste of biodegradable plastics and their related composites. The effects of recycling on the chemical structure and thermomechanical properties of biodegradable plastics are also reported. Additionally, the improvement of biodegradable plastics by blending them with other polymers and nanoparticles is comprehensively discussed. Finally, the status of bioplastic usage, life cycle assessment, EOL management, bioplastic market, and the challenges associated with the recyclability of biodegradable plastics are addressed. This review gives comprehensive insights into the recycling processes that may be employed for the recycling of biodegradable plastics.

Cationic PLGA Nanoparticle Formulations as Biocompatible Immunoadjuvant for Serum Production and Immune Response against Bothrops jararaca Venom

Snakebite envenoming represents a worldwide public health issue. Suitable technologies have been investigated for encapsulated recombinant or native proteins capable of inducing an effective and long-lasting adaptive immune response. Nanoparticles are colloidal dispersions that have been used as drug delivery systems for bioactive biological compounds. Venom-loaded nanoparticles modulate the protein release and activate the immune response to produce specific antibodies. In this study, biocompatible cationic nanoparticles with Bothrops jararaca venom were prepared to be used as a novel immunoadjuvant that shows a similar or improved immune response in antibody production when compared to a conventional immunoadjuvant (aluminum hydroxide). We prepared stable, small-sized and spherical particles with high Bothrops jararaca venom protein association efficiency. The high protein loading efficiency, electrophoresis, and zeta potential results demonstrated that Bothrops jararaca venom is adsorbed on the particle surface, which remained as a stable colloidal dispersion over 6 weeks. The slow protein release occurred and followed parabolic diffusion release kinetics. The in vivo studies demonstrated that venom-loaded nanoparticles were able to produce an immune response similar to that of aluminum hydroxide. The cationic nanoparticles (CNp) as carriers of bioactive molecules, were successfully developed and demonstrated to be a promising immunoadjuvant.

Effect of the Synthetic Approach on the Formation and Magnetic Properties of Iron-Based Nanophase in Branched Polyester Polyol Matrix

This article shows the success of using the chemical reduction method, the polyol thermolytic process, the sonochemistry method, and the hybrid sonochemistry/polyol process method to design iron-based magnetically active composite nanomaterials in a hyperbranched polyester polyol matrix. Four samples were obtained and characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. In all cases, the hyperbranched polymer is an excellent stabilizer of the iron and iron oxides nanophase. In addition, during the thermolytic process and hybrid method, the branched polyol exhibits the properties of a good reducing agent. The use of various approaches to the synthesis of iron nanoparticles in a branched polyester polyol matrix makes it possible to control the composition, geometry, dispersity, and size of the iron-based nanophase and to create new promising materials with colloidal stability, low hemolytic activity, and good magnetic properties. The NMR relaxation method proved the possibility of using the obtained composites as tomographic probes.

Synthesis of Phenylboronic Acid-Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles for Sensitive Soil Enzyme Assays

Soil enzymes, such as invertase, urease, acidic phosphatase and catalase, play critical roles in soil biochemical reactions and are involved in soil fertility. However, it remains a great challenge to efficiently concentrate soil enzymes and sensitively assess enzyme activity. In this study, we synthesized phenylboronic acid-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles to rapidly capture soil enzymes for sensitive soil enzyme assays. The iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were firstly prepared by the co-precipitation method and then functionalized by (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, polyethyleneimine and phenylboric acid in turn, obtaining the final nanoparticles (MNPPBA). Protein-capturing assays showed that the functionalized MNPs had a much higher protein-capturing capacity than the naked MNPs (56% versus 6%). Moreover, MNPPBA almost thoroughly captured the tested enzymes, i.e., urease, invertase, and alkaline phosphatase, from enzyme solutions. Based on MNPPBA, a soil enzyme assay method was developed by integration of enzyme capture, magnetic separation and trace enzyme analysis. The method was successfully applied in determining trace enzyme activity in rhizosphere soil. This study provides a strategy to sensitively determine soil enzyme activity for mechanistic investigation of soil fertility and plant–microbiome interaction.

Critical Review on Polylactic Acid: Properties, Structure, Processing, Biocomposites, and Nanocomposites

Composite materials are emerging as a vital entity for the sustainable development of both humans and the environment. Polylactic acid (PLA) has been recognized as a potential polymer candidate with attractive characteristics for applications in both the engineering and medical sectors. Hence, the present article throws lights on the essential physical and mechanical properties of PLA that can be beneficial for the development of composites, biocomposites, films, porous gels, and so on. The article discusses various processes that can be utilized in the fabrication of PLA-based composites. In a later section, we have a detailed discourse on the various composites and nanocomposites-based PLA along with the properties’ comparisons, discussing our investigation on the effects of various fibers, fillers, and nanofillers on the mechanical, thermal, and wear properties of PLA. Lastly, the various applications in which PLA is used extensively are discussed in detail.

Structural Characterization of Nanocellulose/Fe3O4 Hybrid Nanomaterials

The rise of innovation in the electrical industry is driven by the controlled design of new materials. The hybrid materials based on magnetite/nanocellulose are highly interesting due to their various applications in medicine, ecology, catalysis and electronics. In this study, the structure and morphology of nanocellulose/magnetite hybrid nanomaterials were investigated. The effect of nanocellulose loading on the crystal structure of synthesized composites was investigated by XRD and FTIR methods. The presented study reveals that the interaction between the cellulose and magnetic nanoparticles depends on the nanocellulose content. Further, a transition from cellulose II to cellulose I allomorph is observed. SEM and EDS are employed to determine the variation in morphology with changes in component concentrations. By the calculation of magnetic interactions between adjacent Fe³⁺ and Fe²⁺ ions within composites, it is determined that ferromagnetic coupling predominates.

Development of dispersive solid-phase microextraction coupled with high-pressure liquid chromatography for the preconcentration and determination of the selected neonicotinoid insecticides

Neonicotinoid insecticides have raised a lot of societal concerns due to their environmental ubiquity and unique mode of action. Therefore, it is of great research interest to monitor their occurrence in the environmental waters. However, these compounds exist at low concentrations that is below instrument detection limits. This study reports the applicability of magnetic poly (3 aminobenzoic acid)-based activated carbon (Fe3O4@PABA/AC) composite as an adsorbent in dispersive magnetic solid-phase microextraction (d-MSPME) of neonicotinoid insecticides from wastewater and river water samples. The as-synthesized adsorbent was characterized and confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The analytes of interest were detected and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector (HPLC–DAD). The parameters affecting the extraction and preconcentration processes, such as pH, extraction time, mass of adsorbent, desorption time and eluent volume, were optimized using fractional factorial design and central composite design. Under optimum conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were in the ranges of 0.41–0.82 µg L−1 and 1.4–2.7 µg L−1, respectively. The linearity ranged from 1.4–700 µg L−1 with correlation of determination (R2) values varied between 0.9933 and 0.9987. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were 0.35–0.75% and 1.7–5.5%, respectively. The spike recovery experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the d-MSPME analytical method in real samples, and the percentage recoveries ranged from 86.7 to 99.2%. Therefore, this method shows great potential applicability in preconcentrating the pollutants from the environment.

Mechanical properties of fibre/ filler based poly(Lactic Acid) (Pla) composites : A brief review

Being a biodegradable polymer, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based composites receive greater preference over non-biodegradable plastics. Poly(lactic acid) has to find its place in various applications such as polymer composites, agriculture, biomedical, etc. Polymer composites based on PLA possess comparable mechanical strength, endurance, flexibility and endures future opportunities. Several combinations of natural fibers and filler-based PLA composites have been fabricated and investigated for physical and mechanical changes. Moreover, several biopolymers and compatibilizers are added to PLA to provide rigidity. The paper presents a tabulated review of the various natural fiber/filter-based PLA composites and the preparation and outcomes. In addition, enhancement made by the reinforcement of nano filler in the PLA are also discussed in brief. The significance of PLA in the biomedical application has been discussed in brief. The paper also shed lights in the social and economic aspects of PLA.

Selective separation of Cs-contaminated clay from soil using polyethylenimine-coated magnetic nanoparticles

We evaluated the feasibility of using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with polyethylenimine (PEI), a cationic polymer, to remediate radioactive contaminated soil by separating Cs-contaminated clay from the soil. The influences of the solution pH, PEI-to-MNPs mass ratio, and the PEI-MNPs dose on the magnetic separation performance were systematically examined. The highest SE% of illite from solution through electrostatic attraction was approximately 100% at a mass ratio of 0.04 g-PEI-MNPs/g-clay. The PEI coating clearly enhanced the adhesion between MNPs and clay minerals by increasing the quantity of functional amine groups available for adsorbing negatively charged clay minerals. In separation experiments using a soil mixture, the PEI-coated MNPs selectively separated clay- and silt-sized fine particles smaller than 0.038 mm even in the presence of a large amount of sand when used at a low dose (mass ratio of 0.05 g-PEI-MNPs/g-clay) and without pH control. We also used the PEI-MNPs to separate ¹³⁷Cs-contaminated illite from soil under an external magnetic field. After magnetic separation, the highest removal efficiency achieved for ¹³⁷Cs removal from the treated soil was 81.7% at a low nanoparticle dosage, which resulted in satisfying the reduction of radioactivity and waste volume. The results clearly demonstrate that the selective separation of Cs-contaminated clay using PEI-coated MNPs is a promising technique for remediating radioactive soil.

Synthesis and characterization of optically active magnetic PAI/Fe3O4 nanocomposites

This work presents the preparation and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic optically active poly(amide-imide)/nano-Fe₃O₄ composites with different amount of modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as new nanocomposites by ultrasonic irradiation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry. The surface of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxyl silane because of the homogeneous distribution of nano-Fe₃O₄ in polymer matrix, which the SEM results confirmed that the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were dispersed uniformly in polymer matrix. Furthermore, as compared with pure polymer, thermogravimetric analysis data indicated an improvement of thermal stability of nanocomposites.

Designed biocompatible nano-inhibitor based on poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester) for reduction of the DEHP migration from plasticized PVC

The easy migration of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from the plasticized PVC (P-PVC) poses a serious threat to human health and the ecosystems. Thus, its control migration from the P-PVC products is very important. In this work, a poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester) network (β-CDP) was synthesized via reaction of β-cyclodextrin with 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride. As a potential inhibitor for reduction of the DEHP migration, the β-CDP was grafted to Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Poly(β-cyclodextrin-ester) functionalized Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (MNP-CDP) has been used in PVC/DEHP system as a reactive nano-inhibitor to reduce DEHP migration. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of obtained films were investigated. DEHP migration tests of the P-PVC films were also carried out by using Gas chromatography. It was found that by incorporating the small amounts of nano-inhibitor in PVC/DEHP system, the migration of DEHP effectively reduced from the P-PVC samples about 65% without any serious changes in mechanical and thermal properties of the P-PVC films.
