Novel nano-Fe3O4-encapsulated-dioctylphthalate and linked-triethylenetetramine sorbents for magnetic solid phase removal of heavy metals

Sensitive and selective detection of Mucin1 in pancreatic cancer using hybridization chain reaction with the assistance of Fe3O4@polydopamine nanocomposites

Pancreatic cancer is characterized as the worst for diagnosis lacking symptoms at the early stage, which results in a low overall survival rate. The frequently used techniques for pancreatic cancer diagnosis rely on imaging and biopsy, which have limitations in requiring experienced personnel to operate the expensive instruments and analyze the results. Therefore, there is a high demand to develop alternative tools or methods to detect pancreatic cancer. Herein, we propose a new strategy to enhance the detection sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells both in biofluids and on tissues by combining the unique property of dopamine coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@DOP NPs) to specifically quench and separate free 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) labeled DNA (H₁-FAM/H₂-FAM), and the key feature of hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplification. We have determined the limit of detection (LOD) to be 21 ~ 41 cells/mL for three different pancreatic cancer cell lines. It was also discovered that the fluorescence intensity of pancreatic cancer cells was significantly higher than that of HPDE-C7 and HepG-2 cells (control cell lines), which express lower MUC1 protein. Moreover, the HCR amplification system was used to identify the cancer cells on pancreatic tissue, which indicated the versatility of our strategy in clinical application. Therefore, the presented detection strategy shows good sensitivity, specificity and has great potential for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Response surface methodological optimization of batch Cu(II) sorption onto succinic acid functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles

Functionalizing nanosilica (n-SiO2) particles with suitable active organic moiety leads to the formation of surfaces with precisely controlled physical and chemical characteristics. In this work, a novel nanosorbent (31 ± 2.4 nm), namely succinic acid functionalized nanosilica (n-SiO2@SA), was synthesized via a simple protocol using microwave irradiation to remove Cu(II) ions from aqueous media. The successful functionalization of n-SiO2 was confirmed by FTIR, and the thermal stability of n-SiO2@SA was investigated by TGA study. Other techniques, including HRTEM, DLS and zeta-potential, were utilized to investigate the chemical, surface, and morphological properties of the fabricated n-SiO2@SA. The response surface methodology (RSM) combined with three-level, three-factorial Box–Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the multivariable sorption system using data obtained from 17 batch runs to reach 98.9% of Cu(II) ion removal. The predicted optimal conditions were as follows: contact time = 30 min, pH = 7.1, initial Cu(II) concentration = 317.5 mg L−1, and sorbent dose = 15 mg at which the maximum sorption capacities for n-SiO2 and n-SiO2@SA were 209.3 and 386.4 mg g−1, respectively, at 25 °C, thus supporting the validity of functionalization process. Non-linear regression and linear least-squares methods confirm the suitability of Langmuir model to describe the experimental endothermic, feasible, and chemisorption data, whereas the normalized standard deviation Δq% recommends the pseudo second-order kinetic model to represent the kinetic data. Real Cu-contaminated wastewaters were used to examine n-SiO2@SA nanosorbent for removing Cu(II) ions.

Design and controllable synthesis of ethylenediamine-grafted ion imprinted magnetic polymers for highly selective adsorption to perchlorate

A series of ethylenediamine-grafted ion imprinted magnetic polymers (Fe₃O₄@IIPs) were synthesized via ultrasonic assisted suspension polymerization with perchlorate (ClO₄⁻) as an ion imprinting template. They were characterized by XRD, EA, VSM, FTIR and XPS and applied as adsorbents for ClO₄⁻ removal from aqueous solutions. The effects of the usage amount of crosslinking agent divinylbenzene (DVB) used for preparation on the structure and the adsorptive performance of Fe₃O₄@IIPs were investigated. The results show that the Fe₃O₄@IIPs have an average size of 200–800 nm, which increases with the increase of the amount of DVB from 0 to 2 g during the preparation process. The saturation magnetization intensities are at 35.6–42.8 emu g⁻¹, which decrease with the increase of the usage amount of DVB. The addition of DVB is beneficial to the formation and stability of the ion imprinted cavity of Fe₃O₄@IIPs. The effects of the solution pH value, initial concentration of ClO₄⁻, and adsorption time on the adsorption properties of ClO₄⁻ in aqueous solutions were investigated. The results show that the adsorption capability is affected significantly by solution pH value and reaches the maximum adsorption capacity at pH 3.0. The best adsorption capacity and selectivity of Fe₃O₄@IIPs to ClO₄⁻ can be obtained when the usage amount of DVB is at 0.5 g for synthesis. The adsorption mechanisms might include both ion exchange and electrostatic interaction. The isothermal adsorption curves mainly obey the Langmuir model with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities (q_m,c) at 76.92–111.1 mg g⁻¹ and the experimental maximum adsorption capacities (q_m,e) at 75.7–108.9 mg g⁻¹, respectively, which are much higher than those of the non-ion imprinted material (Fe₃O₄@NIP, q_m,NIP: q_m,c at 60.61 mg g⁻¹ and q_m,e at 59.0 mg g⁻¹). The adsorption kinetic studies show that the adsorption processes reach equilibrium within 10 min and the kinetic data are well fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. There is almost no interference by the coexisting anions for the selective adsorption of ClO₄⁻, with a imprinting factor (α) at 1.8, and selectivity factor (β) larger than 5.9 for several kinds of common co-existing anions, respectively. The Fe₃O₄@IIPs are ideal candidates for removal of ClO₄⁻ from aqueous solution.

Magnetite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles used as seeds for acid mine drainage treatment

In this study, magnetite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were used as seeds for acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment at pH of 7.05±0.35. Duplicate samples of AMD, one without heating and another with heating at 60°C was treated under continuous stirring for 1h. The filtrate analysis results from ICP-OES have shown complete removal of Al, Mg, and Mn, while for Fe, Ni and Zn over 90% removals were recorded. Particularly, settling time has significant effect on the removal of Mg, Ca and Na. The results from SQUID have shown superparamagnetic properties of the synthesised magnetic nanoparticles and ferrite sludge. The recovered nanoparticles from AMD are economically important and reduce the cost of waste disposal.
