Abstract
The high cost and low adsorption capacity of primary metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) limit their application in heavy metal removal. In this paper, Co/Zn bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized with excellent adsorption performance for As5+. The adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min and the maximum adsorption was 250.088 mg/g. In addition, Co-ZIF-8 showed strong selective adsorption of As5+. The adsorption process model of Co-ZIF-8 fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2=0.997) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.994), and it is demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent is a single layer of chemical adsorption. In addition, when the adsorbent enters the arsenic-containing solution, the surface of Co-ZIF-8 is hydrolyzed to produce a large number of Co-OH active sites, and As5+ arrives at the surface of Co-ZIF-8 by electrostatic adsorption and combines with the active sites to generate the arsenic-containing complex As-O-Co. After four cycles, Co-ZIF-8 showed 80% adsorption of As5+. This study not only provides a new method to capture As5+ in water by preparing MOF with partial replacement of the central metal, but also has great significance for the harmless disposal of polluted water.

Abstract
The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Abstract
Copper-based metal-organic frameworks (BDC-Cu MOFs) were synthesized via a casting approach using 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic (BDC) as organic ligand and their properties characterized. The obtained materials were then utilized to immobilize the α-amylase enzyme. The chemical composition and functional components of the synthesized support (BDC-Cu MOFs) were investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the surface morphology was determined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the elemental composition was established with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to analyze the crystallinity of the synthesized DBC-Cu MOFs. The zeta potentials of DBC-Cu MOFs and DBC-Cu MOFs@α-amylase were determined. The immobilized α-amylase demonstrated improved catalytic activity and reusability compared to the free form. Covalent attachment of the α-amylase to BDC-Cu provided an immobilization yield (IY%) of 81% and an activity yield (AY%) of 89%. The immobilized α-amylase showed high catalytic activity and 81% retention even after ten cycles. Storage at 4 °C for eight weeks resulted in a 78% activity retention rate for DBC-Cu MOFs@α-amylase and 49% retention for the free α-amylase. The optimum activity occurred at 60 °C for the immobilized form, whereas the free form showed optimal activity at 50 °C. The free and immobilized α-amylase demonstrated peak catalytic activities at pH 6.0. The maximum reaction velocities (Vmax) values were 0.61 U/mg of protein for free α-amylase and 0.37 U/mg of protein for BDC-Cu MOFs@α-amylase, while the Michaelis‒Menten affinity constants (Km) value was lower for the immobilized form (5.46 mM) than for the free form (11.67 mM). Treatments of maize flour and finger millet samples with free and immobilized α-amylase resulted in increased total phenolic contents. The enhanced antioxidant activities of the treated samples were demonstrated with decreased IC50 values in ABTS and DPPH assays. Overall, immobilization of α-amylase on BDC-Cu MOFs provided improved stability and catalytic activity and enhanced the antioxidant potentials of maize flour and finger millet.

Abstract
Hexavalent chromium is an emerging environmental pollutant that leads to various effects on living organisms. The developed clay material, hydrocalumite (HC) possesses promising chromium adsorption capacity but because of its powder form it cannot be used in column studies. Hence, it is aimed to prepared HC in an usable hybrid bio-composite form by dispersing HC in biopolymeric matrixes like chitosan (CS) and cellulose (Cel) as HCCS and HCCel bio-composites for Cr(VI) removal from water. For quick separation after adsorption, the magnetic particles sprayed HCCS (Fe3O4@HCCS) and HCCel (Fe3O4@HCCel) bio-composites were prepared which possess high adsorption capacity. Different instrumental techniques like FTIR, SEM, and EDAX studies were used to examine the synthesized magnetic bio-composites in order to determine their physicochemical properties. The promising adsorbents namely Fe3O4@HCCS and Fe3O4@HCCel bio-composites were examined for Cr(VI) removal in batch mode. The maximum chromium adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@HCCS and Fe3O4@HCCel bio-composites were found at 43.4 mg/L and 31.8 mg/L, respectively within 45 min. The Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherms were used to reinterpret the equilibrium data of the synthetic magnetic bio-composites. According to the thermodynamic findings, chromium adsorption onto magnetic bio-composites is an endothermic and spontaneous reaction. The NaOH solution makes it simple to regenerate the chromium adsorbed magnetic bio-composites, which can be successfully employed upto four times. The synthesized Fe3O4@HCCS and Fe3O4@HCCel bio-composites act as efficient adsorbents for chromium removal.

Abstract
HIGHLIGHTS The recent development and implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based materials in electrochemical water applications are reviewed. The critical factors that affect the performances of MOFs in the electrochemical reactions, sensing, and separations are highlighted. Advanced tools, such as pair distribution function analysis, are playing critical roles in unraveling the functioning mechanisms, including local structures and nanoconfined interactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a family of highly porous materials possessing huge surface areas and feasible chemical tunability, are emerging as critical functional materials to solve the growing challenges associated with energy-water systems, such as water scarcity issues. In this contribution, the roles of MOFs are highlighted in electrochemical-based water applications (i.e., reactions, sensing, and separations), where MOF-based functional materials exhibit outstanding performances in detecting/removing pollutants, recovering resources, and harvesting energies from different water sources. Compared with the pristine MOFs, the efficiency and/or selectivity can be further enhanced via rational structural modulation of MOFs (e.g., partial metal substitution) or integration of MOFs with other functional materials (e.g., metal clusters and reduced graphene oxide). Several key factors/properties that affect the performances of MOF-based materials are also reviewed, including electronic structures, nanoconfined effects, stability, conductivity, and atomic structures. The advancement in the fundamental understanding of these key factors is expected to shed light on the functioning mechanisms of MOFs (e.g., charge transfer pathways and guest-host interactions), which will subsequently accelerate the integration of precisely designed MOFs into electrochemical architectures to achieve highly effective water remediation with optimized selectivity and long-term stability.

Abstract
With the rapid development of urbanization and industrialization, water contamination has gradually become a big problem. Relevant studies show that adsorption is an efficient strategy to treat pollutants in water. MOFs are a class of porous materials with a three-dimensional frame structure shaped by the self-assembly of metal centers and organic ligands. Because of its unique performance advantages, it has become a promising adsorbent. At present, single MOFs cannot meet the needs, but the introduction of familiar functional groups on MOFs can promote the adsorption performance of MOFs on the target. In this review, the main advantages, adsorption mechanism, and specific applications of various functional MOF adsorbents for pollutants in water are reviewed. At the end of the article, we summarize and discuss the future development direction.

Abstract
Rapidly expanding water pollution has transformed into significant dangers around the world. In recent years, the pharmaceutical and agriculture field attained enormous progress to meet the necessities of health and life; however, discharge of trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and pesticides into water significantly have a negative influence on human health and the environment. Contamination with these pollutants also constitutes a great threat to the aquatic ecosystem. To deal with the harmful impacts of such pollutants, their expulsion has attracted researchers' interest a lot, and it became essential to figure out techniques suitable for the removal of these pollutants. Thus, many researchers have devoted their efforts to improving the existing technology or providing an alternative strategy to solve this environmental problem. One of the attractive materials for this purpose is metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their superior high surface area, high porosity, and the tunable features of their structures and function. Among various techniques of wastewater treatment, such as biological treatment, advanced oxidation process and membrane technologies, etc., metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are tailorable porous architectures and are viably used as adsorbents or photocatalysts for wastewater treatment due to their porosity, tunable internal structure, and large surface area. MOFs are synthesized by various methods such as solvo/hydrothermal, sonochemical, microwave and mechanochemical methods. Most common method used for the synthesis of MOFs is solvothermal/hydrothermal methods. Herein, this review aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in MOFs and their derivatives, focusing on the following aspects: synthesis and applications. This review comprehensively highlights the application of MOFs and nano-MOFs to remove pharmaceuticals and pesticides from wastewater. For the past years, transition metal-based MOFs have been concentrated as photocatalyst/adsorbents in treating contaminated water. However, work on main group metal-based MOFs is not so abundant. Hence, the foremost objective of this review is to present the latest material and references concerning main group element-based MOFs and nanoscale materials derived from them towards wastewater treatment. It summarizes the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future. With the context of recent pioneering studies on main group elements-based MOFs and their derivatives; we hope to stimulate some possibilities for further development, challenges and future perspectives in this field have been highlighted.

Abstract
Due to their simple synthesis method and excellent properties, such as superior adsorption and regeneration capabilities, with a large surface area and tunable pores, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a suitable option for wastewater treatment. Although an exponential growth in MOF literature has been observed in recent years, conducting a quantitative literature analysis of MOF application in wastewater treatment is a novelty. To fill this gap, a total of 1187 relevant publications were extracted from the Web of Science, published during the last 50 years, and analyzed using bibliometric and content analysis techniques. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to reveal growing publication trends, leading journals, prolific countries, and organizations; whereas, a content analysis was used to highlight key research themes and hot topics in this field. The analyses revealed that there is a strong international collaboration among authors, countries, and organizations. Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering are the most prolific journals in this field. Furthermore, the use of MOFs for removing antibiotics from wastewater was identified as a recent hot topic. In addition, performance enhancements of MOFs, in terms of a higher adsorption capacity and water stability, were identified as topics of great interest. To cater to these issues, the application of graphene, graphene oxides, nanoparticles, and quantum dots was also observed in the research fronts in this field.

Impact of reaction parameters for photodegradation pharmaceuticals in wastewater over gold/titania photocatalyst synthesized by pyrolysis of NH 2-MIL-125(Ti). JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 2022; 314:115047. Abstract
The efficient remediation of pharmaceuticals, including wastewater, remains a remarkably challenging issue for water regeneration. Herein, porous Au/TiO2 synthesized by pyrolysis of NH2-MIL-125(Ti) was utilized to be an efficient photocatalyst for mineralization of trimethoprim (TMP) and Metronidazole (MNZ) as the parent compound. The effects of different factors, including TMP and MNZ concentrations, light intensity, H2O2 concentration, Au/TiO2 dosage, and pH value of reaction solution on the degradation and mineralization performances during UV and visible light (VIS), were addressed. The porous Au/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation of TMP and MNZ under UV and VIS illumination. The optimum pH values were 4; the optimum dosage of Au/TiO2 was 1.5 g/L, H2O2 concentration was 9.8 mM, TMP and MNZ concentrations was 10 ppm, and their photodegradation efficiency was 100% after 30 min illumination time and mineralization efficiency 98.2% after 3 h illumination for TMP and MNZ, respectively under UV illumination, however, the photodegradation efficiency was 100% after 50 min illumination and mineralization efficiency 96.3% after 4.5 h illumination time for TMP and MNZ, respectively under VIS illumination. The real wastewater matrix with 10 mg/L of TMP and MNZ were subjected to 60 min of illumination under similar optimum conditions of synthetic solution. The results indicated that photodegradation efficiency was determined to be 100% after 70 min illumination time for removal of both TMP (k = 3.4 × 10-2 min-1) and MNZ (k = 2.87 × 10-2 min-1). This is ascribed to the incorporation of Au NPs onto TiO2, reducing the photoinduced electron-hole recombination, thus promoting the photocatalytic performance. The possible mechanism for photodegradation of antibiotics was also discussed. The demonstration of photocatalysis mechanism over Au/TiO2 photocatalyst can provide some directing in the enhancement of novel photocatalysts based on MOFs doped by noble metal.

Abstract
3-Nitrotyrosine (3-NT), an oxidative stress biomarker, is closely associated with various diseases. Thus, rapid and sensitive detection of 3-NT is of great significance for preventing and treating diseases. Herein, we reported a new 3D zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) [Zn(L)(HBTC)] (L = (E)-4,4'-(ethene-1,2-diyl)bis[(N-pyridin-3-yl)benzamide], H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), which was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, PXRD and TG. The Zn-MOF can be used as a highly efficient fluorescence sensing material to provide a direct and low-cost method for the rapid detection of 3-NT and shows high sensitivity with a KSV value of 6.596 × 104 M-1, a rapid luminescence response within 24 s, excellent selectivity, high anti-interference ability and good recyclability. It is the first example of a MOF being used to directly detect 3-NT as a luminescence sensor to our knowledge. The sensing mechanism of the Zn-MOF towards 3-NT is discussed in detail, which provides a basis for the rational design of MOF sensing materials and their application in biomarker detection.

Abstract
Adsorption-mediated water treatment leaves adsorbents as secondary pollutants in the environment. However, photocatalysis aids in decomposing the contaminant into its nontoxic forms. In this context, we demonstrate an adsorption-photocatalysis pairing in Au-CeO2 nanocomposites for a total methylene blue (MB) removal from water. We synthesized Au-CeO2 through the citrate (cit) reduction method at different Au loading and studied its adsorption capacity with kinetics and thermodynamic models. We observe that the high adsorption capacity of Au-CeO2 is primarily because of the presence of Ce3+ states in CeO2 and citrate ligands on Au NPs. The Ce3+ states interact and transfer their electrons to supported Au NPs, rendering a negative charge over Au. The negatively charged Au surface and the carboxyl (-COO-) group of citrate ligands mediate an electrostatic interaction/adsorption of cationic MB. The total removal of MB is expedited under white light and lasers. A control experiment with Au NPs shows less adsorption-photocatalysis. The size of Au NPs and Au-CeO2 interfacial interaction is responsible for the surface plasmon resonance spectral position at 550-600 nm. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and plasmonic field simulation show surface plasmon-driven photocatalysis in Au-CeO2. LSV shows a 3-fold higher photocurrent density in Au-CeO2 than colloidal Au NPs under white light. The simulated electric field intensity in Au-CeO2 is maximum at SPR excitation and the closest interfacial separation (d = 0 nm). The plasmon-driven photocatalysis in colloidal Au NPs is mainly due to the interaction of hot electrons with the adsorbed MB molecule. Notably, near-field light concentration, hot electrons, and interfacial charge separation are responsible for excellent MB removal in the Au-CeO2 nanosystem. The total MB removal through adsorption-photocatalysis pairing is 99.3% (Au-CeO2), 30.7% (Au NPs), and 13% (CeO2).

Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is expected to provide a pivotal solution for the remediation of toxic dyes and heavy metals from textile wastewater. However, MOFs often suffer from a low removal efficiency, due to the rapid recombination between holes and electrons, generated upon photoexcitation. Additionally, the MOFs exhibit poor water stability, which restricts their large-scale application. In this regard, various approaches (i.e. doping of metal nanoparticle, semiconductor, quantum dot, and ligand functionalization) have been adopted for the formation of multifunctional composites. The MOF-composites possess suitable photochemical, surface, optical, and electronic properties, resulting in enhanced water stability, visible light absorption, and reduced recombination between photogenerated species. This comprehensive review targets to provide an insight into the synthesis and subsequent application of various MOF composites for photocatalytic removal of organic contaminants (dyes) and inorganic (Cr(VI)) contaminants from water. MOFs/graphene oxide composites possess improved surface area and reusability whereas noble metal incorporated MOFs composites suffer from photocorrosion and are relatively costly. Zr and Ti based MOFs exhibit tuning from UV to visible light response and surpass the poor water stability upon binary/ternary composite formation. The role of the dopants in enhancing the efficiency of the composites; the effect of influencing factors such as solution pH, pollutant concentration; the mechanism, and the kinetics of reactions have been outlined. In spite of many advancements, the article also summarizes some roadblocks that need to be unraveled to achieve the energy-water-environment nexus and scope for future breakthrough research in this field.

Abstract
Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are significantly tunable materials that can be exploited in a wide range of applications. In recent years, a large number of studies have been focused on synthesizing nano-scale MOFs (nanoMOFs), thus taking advantage of these unique materials in various applications, especially those that are only possible at nano-scale. One of the technologies where nanoMOF materials occupy a central role is the membrane technology as one of the most efficient separation techniques. Therefore, numerous reports can be found on the enhancement of the physicochemical properties of polymeric membranes by using nanoMOFs, leading to remarkably improved performance. One of the most considerable applications of these nanoMOF-based membranes is in water treatment systems, because freshwater scarcity is now an undeniable crisis facing humanity. In this in-depth review, the most prominent synthesis and post-synthesis methods for the fabrication of nanoMOFs are initially discussed. Afterwards, different nanoMOF-based composite membranes such as thin-film nanocomposites (TFN) and mixed-matrix membranes (MMM) and their various fabrication methods are reviewed and compared. Then, the impacts of using MOFs-based membranes for water purification through growing metal-organic frameworks crystals on the support materials and utilization of metal-organic frameworks as fillers in mixed matrix membrane (MMM) are highlighted. Finally, a summary of pros and cons of using nanoMOFs in membrane technology for water treatment purposes and clear future prospects and research potentials are presented.

Abstract
Under the hydrothermal condition, a new type of two-dimensional coordination polymer ([Cd(D-Cam)(3-bpdb)]n, Cd-CP) has been constructed. It is composed of D-(+)-Camphoric-Cd(II) (D-cam-Cd(II)) one-dimensional chain and bridging 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene (3-bpdb) ligands. Cd-CP has a good removal effect for Hg(II) and Pb(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity is 545 and 450 mg/g, respectively. Interestingly, thermodynamic studies have shown that the adsorption processes of Hg(II) and Pb(II) on Cd-CP use completely different thermodynamic mechanisms, in which the adsorption of Hg(II) is due to a strong electrostatic interaction with Cd-CP, while that of Pb(II) is through a weak coordination with Cd-CP. Moreover, Cd-CP has a higher affinity for Hg(II), and when Hg(II) and Pb(II) coexist, Cd-CP preferentially adsorbs Hg(II).

Abstract
Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) and its derived copolymer, as a temperature-responsive material, are widely used in the field of anticancer drug carrier. And it also plays an important role as carrier in slow-release fertilizer in recent years. In this paper, a smart poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylamide)-coated Alg-BMOF (PABMOF) was fabricated in ionic liquids microemulsion ([Bmim]PF6/TX-100/water) as nano-reactor. The structure and morphology of PABMOF were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TG and BET. The resultant PABMOF was used as a adsorbent for H2PO4- adsorption. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and mechanism of H2PO4- onto the resultant PABMOF were studied. The adsorption kinetic data was well suitable for pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and adsorption isotherm results demonstrated that the equilibrium data was fitted for Freundlich model. The water-holding and water-retention capacity of soil with TRSRFs addition of 2 wt% were74.3% and 52.13% at 30th day, respectively. Moreover, the release behavior of TRSRFs in water show that the cumulative release rate (Cr%) were 81.4% at 45 °C and 97.6% at 25 °C within 172 h, which displayed the excellent temperature-responsive property. The effect of TRSRFs on the growth of Chinese cabbage was investigated, which was indexed with the germination rate, plant height and root length of the crop.

Abstract
Synthesizing high uniform metal-organic frameworks grown on natural biomass such as sodium alginate (ALG), which can efficiently remove metal ions from aqueous solution, is a challenging project. A simple and eco-friendly method of preparing ALG@ZIF-67 hydrogels by in situ synthesis of ZIF-67 onto ALG hydrogels was established. Combining the virtues of ALG with abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and ZIF-67 with excellent porous structure, the obtained ALG@ZIF-67 hydrogels have excellent adsorption for Cu2+ (153.63 mg/g), which was much higher than that of pure ALG hydrogels (111.79 mg/g). The methodology showed that the adsorption process was in accord with the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model (R2 = 0.9972) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9822). The thermodynamic experiments demonstrated that Cu (II) was absorbed by hydrogel with an endothermic and spontaneous process. The competitive adsorption experiment results of ALG@ZIF-67 hydrogel indicated that the absorption capacity of Cu (II) was higher than that of Cd (II), Ni (II), Zn (II) and Mn (II). Moreover, the ALG@ZIF-67 hydrogels still had excellent reusability after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The results indicated that the ALG@ZIF-67 hydrogels had the advantages of low cost, easy preparation, and environment friendly.

Abstract
Clean water scarcity is becoming an increasingly important worldwide issue. The water treatment industry is demanding the development of novel effective materials. Defect engineering in nanoparticles is among the most revolutionary of technologies. Because of their high surface area, structural diversity, and tailorable ability, Metal‒Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can be used for a variety of purposes including separation, storage, sensing, drug delivery, and many other issues. The application in wastewater treatment associated with water stable MOF‒based materials has been an emerging research topic in recent decades. Defect engineering is a sophisticated technique used to manufacture defects and to change the geometric framework of target compounds. Since MOFs have a series of designable structures and active sites, tailoring properties in MOFs by defect engineering is a novel concept. Defect engineering can excavate hidden active sites in MOFs, which can lead to better performance in many fields. Therefore, this technology will open new opportunities in water purification processes. However, there has been little effort to comprehensively discuss this topic. In this review, we provide an overview of the development of defect engineered MOFs for water purification processes. Furthermore, we discuss the potential applications of defect engineered materials.

Abstract
Nowadays, arsenic (III) contamination of drinking water is a global issue. Laboratory and instrument-based techniques are typically used to detect arsenic in water, with an accuracy of 1 ppb. However, such detection methods require a laboratory-based environment, skilled labor, and additional costs for setup. As a result, several metal-based nanoparticles have been studied to prepare a cost-effective and straightforward detector for arsenic (III) ions. Among the developed strategies, colorimetric detection is one of the simplest methods to detect arsenic (III) in water. Several portable digital detection technologies make nanoparticle-based colorimetric detectors useful for on-site arsenic detection. The present review showcases several metal-based nanoparticles that can detect arsenic (III) colorimetrically at a concentration of ~0.12 ppb or lower in water. A literature survey suggests that biomolecule-based metal nanoparticles could serve as low-cost, facile, susceptible, and eco-friendly alternatives for detecting arsenic (III). This review also describes future directions, perspectives and challenges in developing this alternative technology, which will help us reach a new milestone in designing an effective arsenic detector for commercial use.

Abstract
Heavy metal ions and pesticides are the noteworthy toxic substances which must be removed from contaminated water for safeguarding public health. The higher levels of these substances in natural water may adversely affect the human health, climate and the eco-framework. The adsorptive removal of hazardous constituents employing metal organic frameworks has drawn considerable attention of researchers during the last decade. From this point of view, single crystal of calcium fumarate [Ca(C4H4O4)1.5 (H2O)(CH3OH)2] has been developed and analyzed by single crystal X-ray crystallography which confirmed the formation of 3-D metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The synthesized MOFs was employed for simultaneous adsorptive removal of imidacloprid, a high consumption pesticide, and highly toxic Cd (II) from aqua ecosystem. The effect of variation in experimental conditions such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration and temperature on adsorption was systematically evaluated. Both the imidacloprid and Cd(II) exhibited maximum adsorption at pH 6.5 and 7.8, respectively. The equilibrium empirical data was fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. The adsorption capacity of CaFu MOFs was observed to be 467.23 and 781.2 mg g-1 for imidacloprid and cadmium ions, respectively. The adsorbed pollutants were desorbed from the adsorbent using dilute HCl, and the material was reused for five adsorption-desorption cycles without any appreciable loss of adsorption capacity. Therefore, the 3-D CaFu MOFs could be utilized as a novel material for adsorptive removal of imidacloprid pesticide as well as Cd (II) from wastewater.

Abstract
Accessibility to quality and clean water has in recent times been compromised due to the presence of pollutants, thus posing as a threat to the survival of living organisms. The adsorption technique in this regard has been observed to be useful in the remediation process with the material used as the adsorbent playing an integral role. In this study, a novel biocomposite (PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al) based on peanut husk (a low-cost material) was developed by functionalization with aluminum (Al), iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and Fe3O4. The efficiency of PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al as an adsorbent for the remediation of wastewater was evaluated using Congo red (CR) and phosphates (PO43-) as model pollutants. The results from the characterization studies confirmed PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al to have superparamagnetic properties which ensures its easy retrieval. Adsorption studies indicated that PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al had a maximum monolayer capacity of 79.0 ± 2.0 and 16.8 ± 2.5 mg g-1 for CR and PO43- (according to P), respectively, which was significantly dependent on factors such as reaction time, solution pH, temperature and the presence of some common anions. The Freundlich model was observed to better describe both adsorption processes with chemisorption being the principal underlying mechanism. Results from using real water samples confirmed PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al to be highly efficient for practical remediation processes. These results coupled with the synthesis of PN-Fe3O4-IDA-Al under benign conditions using low-cost materials help to expound the knowledge on the use of low cost materials as the basis for the development of highly efficient adsorbents for wastewater remediation.

Abstract
In this study, we have rationally designed and grafted a bio-assisted 2D/2D TiO2/MIL-88(Fe) (TCS@MOF) heterojunction by growing granular TiO2 on the surface of MIL-88(Fe) nanosheet, as hybrid photocatalyst. The hierarchical TCS@MOF composite was prepared via the one-pot solvothermal process and employed for monocrotophos (MCP) degradation under visible light region, since its persistent nature on soil and water causes major threat to the environment. The TCS@MOF promotes a number of packed high-speed nano-tunnels in the (p-n) heterojunctions, which significantly enhance the migration of photo-induced electrons (e-) and holes (h+), respectively and thus limits the charge recombination of e-s. The optimized photocatalyst achieves significant catalytic activity of ~98.79% for the degradation of MCP within 30 min of irradiation. The prominent oxidative radicals namely •OH, •O2- etc., were involved in the oxidation of organic pesticide. Besides, TCS@MOF exhibits outstanding stability even after five repetitive cycles for the oxidation of MCP with a negligible decrease in photo-activity. The proposed mechanism and oxidative pathways of MCP were rationally deduced in detail subject to experimental results. The mechanism renders insight into the oxidation and consequent bond rupture of pollutant as well as into the formation of products such as H2O, CO2, etc. This report unveils a novel architecture of proficiently optimized TCS@MOF material structure for the perceptive oxidation of organic contaminants.

Abstract
Metal pollutant adsorbents are an essential material platform for sustainable environmental remediation, but the adsorbents are typically disposable after sorption, which secondarily contaminates the environment. We report on recyclable Cu(II) adsorbent of deprotonated poly-N-phenylglycine nanofibers (d-PPG NFs)-grafted reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets intercalated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), which are synthesized via wet chemical process. The adsorption performances of ternary Fe3O4 NPs@rGO-d-PPG NFs and binary Fe3O4 NPs@rGO composites are compared, and the ternary ones exhibit much higher Cu2+-adsorption capacity than binary ones under diverse pH conditions due to both high specific surface area and high cationic affinity of d-PPG NFs that follow the Freundlich adsorption model. Density-functional theory calculation results explain why/how the ternary composites show greater Cu2+ adsorption capability in higher pH environment. The ternary composites present stable, high Cu2+ adsorption capability, irrespective of Co2+ concentration in bimetallic Cu and Co aqueous solution. The Fe3O4 NPs in the ternary composites allow magnet-assisted collection after adsorption batches, whose collection yield is ∼95 % without adsorption capacity degradation in repeated adsorbent reuses over 10 times. This study provides a general, promising pathway to synthesize reusable sorptive materials for water purification/remediation.
