Preparation of antibacterial TiO2 particles by hybridization with azelaic acid for applications in cosmetics

Surface modification of TiO2/ZnO nanoparticles by organic acids with enhanced methylene blue and rhodamine B dye adsorption properties

The United Nations Organization (UNO) has revealed that approximately 2.1 billion people do not have access to treated water. Methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B are produced as water pollutants in textile, plastic, and dye industries. In this study, oxalic acid or lactic acid surface-modification were applied to TiO₂/ZnO nanoparticles aiming to improve antibacterial and adsorption properties. The mixtures containing the corresponding acid and nanoparticles in 0.25 : 1/0.5 : 1 ratios of ZnO and TiO₂ correspondingly were subjected to ultrasonic treatment with a catenoidal ultrasonic probe coupled to a homemade ultrasonic generator with an output power of 750 W, wave amplitude of 50% and variable frequency in the range of 15-50 kHz. To verify the influence of the ultrasonic treatment, different treatment times of 30, 45, 60, and 90 min were applied. Unmodified and modified TiO₂/ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, and XPS. From the results, obtained from the physicochemical characterization, in the ZTO90 and ZTL90 samples a greater modification was shown. The SEM images showed that a coating was present on the surface of the ceramic particles of the ZTL90 sample. The O 1s deconvolution in the XPS spectra indicates a greater presence of C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds in the ZTL90 sample. In parallel, the sample ZTL90 presented 85 and 89% adsorption efficiency for MB and rhodamine B dyes in a time of 12 min, and important antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. epidermis could be evidenced.

Gas Cluster Ion Beams as a Versatile Soft-Landing Tool for the Controlled Construction of Thin (Bio)Films

Surface biofunctionalization with proteins is the key to many biomedical applications. In this study, a solvent-free method for the controlled construction of protein thin films is reported. Using large argon gas cluster ion beams, proteins are sputtered from a target (a pool of pure proteins), and collected on a chosen substrate, being nearly any solid material. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) revealed the presence of intact protein molecules on the collectors. Furthermore, lowering the energy per atom in the cluster projectiles down to 1 eV/atom allowed more than 60% of bradykinin molecules to be transferred intact. This protein deposition method offers a precise control of the film thickness as the transferred protein quantity is proportional to the argon clusters ion dose reached for the transfer. This major feature enables building protein films from (sub)mono- to multilayers, without upper limitation of the thickness. A procedure was developed to measure the film thickness in situ the ToF-SIMS instrument. The versatility and potential of this soft-landing alternative for further applications is demonstrated on the one hand by building a protein thin film at the surface of paper, a substrate hardly compatible with solution-based adsorption methods. On the other hand, the possibility to achieve alternated multilayer buildup is demonstrated with the construction of a bilayer composed of bradykinin and Irganox, with the two layers well separated. These results lay the first stone toward original and complex multilayers that could previously not be considered with solution-based adsorption methods, and this regardless of the substrate nature.

Azelaic acid and Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil co-loaded vesicular carrier for combinational therapy of acne

Aim: Azelaic acid (AzA), a comedolytic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory anti-melanogenic agent, prescribed against acne vulgaris is safe on skin. Its combination with another widely used anti-acne agent, tea tree oil (EO) whose delivery is limited by volatility, instability and lipophilicity constraints was attempted. Method: Solvent injection was used to prepare AzA-EO integrated ethosomes. Result: Ethosomes were transformed into carbopol hydrogel, which exhibited pseudo-plastic properties with appreciable firmness, work of shear, stickiness and work of adhesion. The hydrogel showed better permeation and retention characteristics vis-a-vis commercial formulation (AzidermTM), when evaluated in Wistar rat skin. Further, ethosome hydrogel composite was better tolerated with no side effects. Conclusion: The findings suggests that the aforementioned strategy could be a potential treatment used for acne management.

Nanostructured Oxide-Based Systems for the pH-Triggered Release of Cinnamaldehyde

Cinnamaldehyde is a natural product with antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, poorly stable in environmental conditions. Systems for the controlled release of cinnamaldehyde are of great interest to the food and pharmaceutical industries. Here, a new oxide-based construct for the release of cinnamaldehyde catalyzed by acidic pH was obtained by a facile grafting method based on amino-silane linkers and imine chemistry. The grafting procedure led to a loading of ca. 5 molecules/nm2, determined on oxide powders with CHN and TGA measurements. The covalent grafting of cinnamaldehyde, demonstrated by FTIR analyses, preserved the molecule stability, simplifying storage. Release tests were performed at different pH values (between 5.0 and 7.4). Thanks to imine chemistry, a fast cinnamaldehyde (CIN) release was observed in a pH 5.0 environment. Using 1 mg/mL suspensions, CIN concentrations within the range adopted in the food industry were obtained (12.4 ppm). The grafting procedure was also performed on a porous film based on a photocatalytic oxide, demonstrating the versatility of this method, adaptable to both powders and macroscopic materials. By taking advantage of the photoactivity of the oxide, regeneration of the fouled film was achieved upon UV irradiation for 1 h, opening the door to reusable devices for the controlled release of cinnamaldehyde.

GC-MS-Based Metabolomics Analysis of Prawn Shell Waste Co-Fermentation by Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis

GC-MS-based metabolomics were used to investigate metabolic changes in prawn shell waste during fermentation. Microbial strains Lactobacillus plantarum and Bacillus subtilis were co-fermented in a shake flask comprising of 5% (w/v) prawn shell waste and 20% (w/v) glucose as a carbon source. Analysis of the prawn shell waste fermentation showed a total of 376 metabolites detected in the culture supernatant, including 14 amino acids, 106 organic acids, and 90 antimicrobial molecules. Results show that the liquid fraction of the co-fermentation is promising for harvesting valuable metabolites for probiotics application.

Continuous Operation on Synthesis and Surface Modification of Rutile Nanoparticles in Designed Microfluidic Reactors

Synthesis and surface modification of rutile nanoparticles (NPs) are two distinct processes. Conventionally, they should be conducted separately. In this work, synthesis and surface modification of rutile NPs are consecutively performed in a designed microfluidic system, thereby avoiding the pilot processes, giving a high controllability and low-energy consumption of the process, and the preparation process of the coated TiO₂ is simplified effectively. Samples synthesized using different strategies are compared, and the results demonstrate that the sample prepared using the microfluidic method shows a smaller particle size (60 nm) and a narrower particle size distribution range than those synthesized using the other two methods. Rutile NPs are most commonly used in terms of suspensions, the stability of the suspensions consisting of the naked and coated samples are assessed in terms of turbidity, agglomeration size, and settlement rate. Response surface methodology is employed to quantify the effects of the factors on the stability of suspensions.

Biochemical and histopathological impacts of rutile and anatase (TiO2 forms) in Mytilus galloprovincialis

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) particles have been widely used in various industrial applications and consumer products. Due to their large production and use, they will eventually enter into aquatic environments. Once in the aquatic environment TiO₂ particles may interact with the organisms and induce toxic effects. Since the most common crystallographic forms of TiO₂ are rutile and anatase, the present study evaluated the effect of these two forms of TiO₂ particles in Mytilus galloprovincialis. For this, mussels were exposed to different concentrations of rutile and anatase particles (0, 5, 50, 100 µg/L) for twenty-eight days. Ti concentrations, histopathological alterations and biochemical effects were evaluated. Similar Ti concentrations were found in mussels exposed to rutile and anatase, with the highest values in mussels exposed to the highest exposure concentration. Histopathological results demonstrated that both forms of TiO₂ induced alterations on gills and digestive glands along the increasing exposure gradient. Biochemical markers showed that mussels exposed to rutile maintained their metabolic capacity (assessed by the activity of the Electron Transport System, ETS), while anatase increased the metabolism of mussels. Mussels exposed to rutile increased their detoxifying defences which, due to the low tested concentrations, were sufficient to avoid cellular damage. On the other hand, mussels exposed to anatase suffered cellular damages despite the increase of the antioxidant defences which may be related to the high ETS activity. Both rutile and anatase particles were toxic to M. galloprovincialis, being the highest oxidative stress exerted by the crystalline form anatase.

Synthesis of Nanoporous TiO2 with the Use of Diluted Hydrogen Peroxide Solution and Its Application in Gas Sensing

The chemical routes of metal oxidation in presence of hydrogen peroxide solutions are tailor-made for the synthesis of biocompatible metal oxide surfaces with clean intermediate and end products, such as oxides, hydroxides, hydrogen and water. The hydrolysis of titanium in hydrogen peroxide solutions is particularly interesting for medical applications, forming micro- and nanoscale titania surfaces. In this paper, the content of the hydrolysis solution is revised, allowing the fabrication of gas sensor devices based on nanoporous titania. Nanopore and microcrack formations were discussed in detail by monitoring the structural changes on the thin film surface with field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). A stable rutile crystalline phase was detected by glancing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) measurement after repetitive hydrothermal processes. Electrical conductance measurements were carried out at high temperatures (400–600 °C) under humid airflow (40% RH@20 °C) with the injection of various concentrations of a wide set of test compounds (C2H3N, CO, H2, NO2, C2H6O), to observe the sensing capabilities of the material. Furthermore, the humidity effects on the sensing properties toward H2, CO, and C2H6O have been discussed.

Synthesis of cosmetic grade TiO2-SiO2 core-shell powder from mechanically milled TiO2 nanopowder for commercial mass production

TiO₂ nanoparticles as an active sunscreen ingredient generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon UVA irradiation which is cytotoxic, genotoxic and potential to damage the DNA. The health concern and potential risks from TiO₂ can be mitigated by shielding the particles through the suitable coating. Considering the advantages of SiO₂, SiO₂ coated TiO₂ nanoparticles can be a potential material which can replace TiO₂ for thickening, whitening, lubricating, and sunscreen ingredient in cosmetics. This article reports the synthesis of cosmetic grade TiO₂-SiO₂ core-shell nanopowder from mechanically milled TiO₂ nanopowder for commercial mass production. From commercial TiO₂ nanopowder was fabricated through size reduction by nanoset milling. Followed by the fabricated TiO₂ nanopowder coated with SiO₂ through sol-gel technique. A suitable optimum condition was explored for cosmetic grade TiO₂-SiO₂ core-shell nanopowder. Various physical properties and optical properties were analyzed. Synthesized of cosmetic grade TiO₂-SiO₂ core-shell nanopowder found to be at 100 nm size, with a homogeneous SiO₂ coating having UVA protection factor 39 and sun protection factor (SPF) is 42. From the size, safety, and SPF perspective it can be an excellent cosmetic grade powder and from process simplicity perspective it can be commercially viable.
