Abstract
This work aims to increase the efficiency of an activated carbon produced from brewery waste (AC) in the removal of three target antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole (SMX), trimethoprim (TMP), and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) by surface incorporation of oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur groups. AC was produced using spent brewery grains (the most abundant waste from the brewing industry) as raw material, K2CO3 as activating agent and microwave energy for pyrolysis. Then, seven different functionalized AC were prepared, characterized for their physicochemical properties, and tested for adsorption (%) of SMX, TMP and CIP from three different matrices (ultrapure water (pH ~5-6), buffered ultrapure water (pH 8), and effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP effluent (pH 8)), under batch operation. Based on the obtained results, an oxygen functionalized AC was selected for further characterization and studies on the adsorption of the target antibiotics from the WWTP effluent. Kinetic results fitted the pseudo-second order model and the equilibrium isotherms were adequately described by the Langmuir model, reaching maximum adsorption capacities (qm) of 124 ± 1 μmol g-1, 315 ± 2 μmol g-1 and 201 ± 5 μmol g-1 for SMX, TMP and CIP, respectively. The selected functionalization increased qm by up to 58 % in comparison with the non-functionalized AC. The oxygen modified AC produced from a biomass waste remarkably improved its performance for an efficient application in the removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Information about pan-genotypic treatments for hepatitis in Portugal is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of glecaprevir plus pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB) treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in real-world clinical practice. METHODS An observational prospective study was implemented in six hospitals with 121 adult HCV patients who initiated treatment with GLE/PIB between October 2018 and April 2019, according to clinical practice. Eligible patients had confirmed HCV infection genotype (GT) 1 to 6 and were either treatment-naïve or had experience with interferon-, ribavirin- or sofosbuvir-based regimens, with or without compensated cirrhosis. Baseline sociodemographic and safety data are described for the total population (N = 115). Effectiveness [sustained virologic response 12 weeks after treatment (SVR12)] and patient-reported outcomes are presented for the core population with sufficient follow-up data (n = 97). RESULTS Most patients were male (83.5%), aged < 65 years (94.8%), with current or former alcohol consumption (77.3%), illicit drug use (72.6%), and HCV acquisition through intravenous drug use (62.0%). HIV co-infection occurred in 22.6% of patients. The prevalence of each GT was: GT1 51.3%, GT2 1.7%, GT3 30.4%, GT4 16.5%, and GT5.6 0%. Most patients were non-cirrhotic (80.9%) and treatment-naïve (93.8%). The SVR12 rates were 97.9% (95% CI: 92.8 - 99.4), and > 95% across cirrhosis status, GT, illicit drug use, alcohol consumption, and HCV treatment experience. The adverse event rate was 2.6%, and no patient discontinued treatment due to adverse events related to GLE/PIB. CONCLUSION Consistent with other real-world studies and clinical trials, treatment with GLE/PIB showed high effectiveness and tolerability overall and in difficult-to-treat subgroups (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03303599).

Abstract
Bone is a mineralized tissue with the intrinsic capacity for constant remodeling. Rapid prototyping techniques, using biomaterials that mimic the bone native matrix, have been used to develop osteoinductive and osteogenic personalized 3D structures, which can be further combined with drug delivery and phototherapy. Herein, a Fab@Home 3D Plotter printer was used to promote the layer-by-layer deposition of a composite mixture of gelatin, chitosan, tricalcium phosphate, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The phototherapeutic potential of the new NIR-responsive 3D_rGO scaffolds was assessed by comparing scaffolds with different rGO concentrations (1, 2, and 4 mg/mL). The data obtained show that the rGO incorporation confers to the scaffolds the capacity to interact with NIR light and induce a hyperthermy effect, with a maximum temperature increase of 16.7 °C after under NIR irradiation (10 min). Also, the increase in the rGO content improved the hydrophilicity and mechanical resistance of the scaffolds, particularly in the 3D_rGO4. Furthermore, the rGO could confer an NIR-triggered antibacterial effect to the 3D scaffolds, without compromising the osteoblasts' proliferation and viability. In general, the obtained data support the development of 3D_rGO for being applied as temporary scaffolds supporting the new bone tissue formation and avoiding the establishment of bacterial infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a satellite RNA virus that requires the hepatitis B virus (HBV) for assembly and propagation. Individuals infected with HDV progress to advanced liver disease faster than HBV-monoinfected individuals. Recent studies have estimated the global prevalence of anti-HDV antibodies among the HBV-infected population to be 5-15%. This study aimed to better understand HDV prevalence at the population level in 25 countries/territories. METHODS We conducted a literature review to determine the prevalence of anti-HDV and HDV RNA in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals in 25 countries/territories. Virtual meetings were held with experts from each setting to discuss the findings and collect unpublished data. Data were weighted for patient segments and regional heterogeneity to estimate the prevalence in the HBV-infected population. The findings were then combined with The Polaris Observatory HBV data to estimate the anti-HDV and HDV RNA prevalence in each country/territory at the population level. RESULTS After adjusting for geographical distribution, disease stage and special populations, the anti-HDV prevalence among the HBsAg+ population changed from the literature estimate in 19 countries. The highest anti-HDV prevalence was 60.1% in Mongolia. Once adjusted for the size of the HBsAg+ population and HDV RNA positivity rate, China had the highest absolute number of HDV RNA+ cases. CONCLUSIONS We found substantially lower HDV prevalence than previously reported, as prior meta-analyses primarily focused on studies conducted in groups/regions that have a higher probability of HBV infection: tertiary care centers, specific risk groups or geographical regions. There is large uncertainty in HDV prevalence estimates. The implementation of reflex testing would improve estimates, while also allowing earlier linkage to care for HDV RNA+ individuals. The logistical and economic burden of reflex testing on the health system would be limited, as only HBsAg+ cases would be screened. IMPACT AND IMPLICATIONS There is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the prevalence of hepatitis delta virus among people living with hepatitis B virus at the population level. In this study, we aimed to better understand the burden in 25 countries and territories, to refine techniques that can be used in future analyses. We found a lower prevalence in the majority of places studied than had been previously reported. These data can help inform policy makers on the need to screen people living with hepatitis B virus to find those coinfected with hepatitis delta virus and at high risk of progression, while also highlighting the pitfalls that other researchers have often fallen into.

Abstract
Responsive magnetic nanomaterials offer significant advantages for innovative therapies, for instance in cancer treatments that exploit on-demand delivery on alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulus. In this work, biocompatible magnetic bionanocomposite films are fabricated from chitosan by film casting with incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) produced by facile one pot synthesis. The influence of synthesis conditions and MNP concentration on the films heating efficiency and heat dissipation are evaluated, through spatio-temporally mapping of the surface temperature changes by video-thermography. The cast films have a thickness below 100 μm and upon exposure to AMF (663 kHz, 12.8 kA m-1 ) induce exceptionally strong heating, reaching a maximum temperature increase of 82°C within 270 s irradiation. Further, we demonstrate that the films can serve as substrates that supply heat for multiple hyperthermia scenarios, including: (i) non-contact automated heating of cell culture medium; (ii) heating of gelatine-based hydrogels of different shapes, and (iii) killing cancerous melanoma cells. Abstract
Currently, bone infections caused by diseases or injuries are a major health issue. In addition, the conventional therapeutic approaches used to treat bone diseases or injuries present several drawbacks. In the area of tissue engineering, researchers have been developing new alternative therapeutic approaches, such as scaffolds, to promote the regeneration of injured tissues. Despite the advantages of these materials, most of them require an invasive surgical procedure. To overcome these problems, the main focus of this work was to develop scaffolds for bone regeneration, which can be applied using injectable hydrogels that circumvent the use of invasive procedures, while allowing for bone regeneration. Throughout this work, injectable hydrogels were developed based on a natural polymer, dextran, along with the use of two inorganic compounds, calcium β-triphosphate and nanohydroxyapatite, that aimed to reinforce the mechanical properties of the 3D mesh. The materials were chemically characterized considering the requirements for the intended application: the swelling capacity was evaluated, the degradation rate in a simulated physiological environment was assessed, and compression tests were performed. Furthermore, vancomycin was incorporated into the polymeric matrices to obtain scaffolds with antibacterial performance, and their drug release profile was assessed. The cytotoxic profile of the hydrogels was assessed by an MTS assay, using osteoblasts as model cells. The data obtained demonstrated that dextran-based hydrogels were successfully synthesized, with a drug release profile with an initial burst between 50 and 80% of the drug. The hydrogels possess fair biocompatibility. The swelling capacity showed that the stability of the samples and their degradation profile is compatible with the average time period required for bone regeneration (usually about one month) and have a favorable Young's modulus (200-300 kPa). The obtained hydrogels are well-suited for bone regeneration applications such as infections that occur during implantation or bone graft substitutes with antibiotics.

Abstract
Starch is a biodegradable and biocompatible carbohydrate that, when combined with bioactive molecules, can be processed as biomimetic platforms with enhanced performance, allowing its use as active wound dressing materials. Porphyrinoid photosensitizers can tune the physicochemical/functional profile of biomacromolecules, allowing their use in anti-infective strategies. In this work, the feasibility of using the cationic 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin tetraiodide (TMPyP) to enhance the physicochemical, mechanical, antimicrobial performance, and wound healing ability of casted starch-based films was studied. TMPyP conferred a reddish coloration to the films, maintaining their pristine transparency. It increased by 87 % the films hydrophobicity and, depending on the TMPyP used, conferred mobility to the starch polymeric chains. Starch/TMPyP-based films effectively photoinactivated Escherichia coli (>99.99 %) and favored the wound healing process, even in the absence of light. Therefore, the incorporation of TMPyP into starch-based formulations revealed to be a promising strategy to tune the films compaction degree while giving rise to water tolerant and photosensitive biomaterials that can act as multitarget antimicrobial medical dressings and glycocarriers of active compounds relevant for effective skin wound healing.

Abstract
Non-invasive routes for insulin delivery are emerging as alternatives to currently painful subcutaneous injections. For pulmonary delivery, formulations may be in powdered particle form, using carriers such as polysaccharides to stabilise the active principle. Roasted coffee beans and spent coffee grounds (SCG) are rich in polysaccharides, namely galactomannans and arabinogalactans. In this work, the polysaccharides were obtained from roasted coffee and SCG for the preparation of insulin-loaded microparticles. The galactomannan and arabinogalactan-rich fractions of coffee beverages were purified by ultrafiltration and separated by graded ethanol precipitations at 50% and 75%, respectively. For SCG, galactomannan-rich and arabinogalactan-rich fractions were recovered by microwave-assisted extraction at 150 °C and at 180 °C, followed by ultrafiltration. Each extract was spray-dried with insulin 10% (w/w). All microparticles had a raisin-like morphology and average diameters of 1-5 µm, which are appropriate for pulmonary delivery. Galactomannan-based microparticles, independently of their source, released insulin in a gradual manner, while arabinogalactan-based ones presented a burst release. The microparticles were seen to be non-cytotoxic for cells representative of the lung, specifically lung epithelial cells (A549) and macrophages (Raw 264.7) up to 1 mg/mL. This work shows how coffee can be a sustainable source of polysaccharide carriers for insulin delivery via the pulmonary route.

Abstract
The bone is a connective, vascularized, and mineralized tissue that confers protection to organs, and participates in the support and locomotion of the human body, maintenance of homeostasis, as well as in hematopoiesis. However, throughout the lifetime, bone defects may arise due to traumas (mechanical fractures), diseases, and/or aging, which when too extensive compromise the ability of the bone to self-regenerate. To surpass such clinical situation, different therapeutic approaches have been pursued. Rapid prototyping techniques using composite materials (consisting of ceramics and polymers) have been used to produce customized 3D structures with osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. In order to reinforce the mechanical and osteogenic properties of these 3D structures, herein, a new 3D scaffold was produced through the layer-by-layer deposition of a tricalcium phosphate (TCP), sodium alginate (SA), and lignin (LG) mixture using the Fab@Home 3D-Plotter. Three different TCP/LG/SA formulations, LG/SA ratio 1:3, 1:2, or 1:1, were produced and subsequently evaluated to determine their suitability for bone regeneration. The physicochemical assays demonstrated that the LG inclusion improved the mechanical resistance of the scaffolds, particularly in the 1:2 ratio, since a 15 % increase in the mechanical strength was observed. Moreover, all TCP/LG/SA formulations showed an enhanced wettability and maintained their capacity to promote the osteoblasts' adhesion and proliferation as well as their bioactivity (formation of hydroxyapatite crystals). Such results support the LG inclusion and application in the development of 3D scaffolds aimed for bone regeneration.

Abstract
Natural polymers such as cellulose have interesting tribo- and piezoelectric properties for paper-based energy harvesters, but their low performance in providing sufficient output power is still an impediment to a wider deployment for IoT and other low-power applications. In this study, different types of celluloses were combined with nanosized carbon fillers to investigate their effect on the enhancement of the electrical properties in the final nanogenerator devices. Cellulose pulp (CP), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were blended with carbon black (CB), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The microstructure of the nanocomposite films was characterized by scanning electron and probe microscopies, and the electrical properties were measured macroscopically and at the local scale by piezoresponse force microscopy. The highest generated output voltage in triboelectric mode was obtained from MCC films with CNTs and CB, while the highest piezoelectric voltage was produced in CNF-CNT films. The obtained electrical responses were discussed in relation to the material properties. Analysis of the microscopic response shows that pulp has a higher local piezoelectric d33 coefficient (145 pC/N) than CNF (14 pC/N), while the macroscopic response is greatly influenced by the excitation mode and the effective orientation of the crystals relative to the mechanical stress. The increased electricity produced from cellulose nanocomposites may lead to more efficient and biodegradable nanogenerators.

Abstract
Asymmetric wound dressings have captured researchers' attention due to their ability to reproduce the structural and functional properties of the skin layers. Furthermore, recent studies also report the benefits of using near-infrared (NIR) radiation-activated photothermal therapies in treating infections and chronic wounds. Herein, a chitosan (CS) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hydrogel (CS_rGO) was combined with a polycaprolactone (PCL) and cellulose acetate (CA) electrospun membrane (PCL_CA) to create a new NIR-responsive asymmetric wound dressing. The rGO incorporation in the hydrogel increased the NIR absorption capacity and allowed a mild hyperthermy effect, a temperature increase of 12.4 °C when irradiated with a NIR laser. Moreover, the PCL_CA membrane presented a low porosity and hydrophobic nature, whereas the CS_rGO hydrogel showed the ability to provide a moist environment, prevent exudate accumulation and allow gaseous exchanges. Furthermore, the in vitro data demonstrate the capacity of the asymmetric structure to act as a barrier against bacteria penetration as well as mediating a NIR-triggered antibacterial effect. Additionally, human fibroblasts were able to adhere and proliferate in the CS_rGO hydrogel, even under NIR laser irradiation, presenting cellular viabilities superior to 90 %. Altogether, our data support the application of the NIR-responsive asymmetric wound dressings for skin regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-value agrifood byproducts are rich in biomolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides, and possess film-forming ability, motivating their use in the development of biodegradable plastics. This work studied the feasibility of using locust bean milling-derived dust (LBMD) as a source of biomolecules suitable for developing biodegradable plastics. RESULTS LBMD is composed of 56% protein, 28% carbohydrate, 10% moisture, 6% lipid, and 2% ash. In addition, phenolic compounds are also present. The carbohydrates are mainly composed by (1 → 4)-mannose, (1 → 4,6)-mannose, and t-galactose glycosidic linkages. Depending on the LBMD concentration used, when employed in casting biodegradable plastics, LBMD yields transparent yellowish bioplastics with 90% elongation at break and surface water contact angles ranging from 60° to 90°. Additionally, LBMD-based bioplastics display antioxidant activity, inhibiting cationic 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals up to 61% in just 24 h. LBMD-based bioplastics are disintegrated when incubated on the soil surface for 34 weeks, perhaps acting as a soil nutrient. CONCLUSION LBMD represents a potential source of biomolecules for producing transparent, flexible, water tolerant, antioxidant, and biodegradable bioplastics, opening up opportunities to implement a novel circular strategy to valorize this locust bean industry byproduct. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is used as a filler to improve the stiffness and processability of plastics at low cost. However, its high density limits the quantity to be used. In this work, the feasibility of using starch consolidation of eggshells-derived CaCO3 (ES) to develop lightweight fillers for low density polyethylene (LDPE)-based materials was studied. Starch, recovered from potato by-products, was combined with ES, gelatinized, dried, and milled as a fine powder. The obtained ES/starch-based particles were then compounded with LDPE and their influence on chromatic, mechanical, morphological, and density properties of mold injected LDPE-based materials was studied. Commercially available CaCO3 (COM) was used as control. ES/starch particles were 18 times less dense than the commercially available CaCO3 (2.62 g cm-3). When incorporated into LDPE-based formulations, ES/starch originated brownish materials with lower density (1.18 g cm-3) and higher stiffness (542 MPa of Young's modulus) than those produced with the COM sample (1.33 g cm-3 of density; 221 MPa of Young's modulus). Therefore, starch consolidation of ES revealed to be a promising approach to develop lightweight fillers able to provide stiffness and color to LDPE-based plastics, while valorizing biomolecules-rich by-products.

Abstract
Coccolithophore microalgae, such as Emiliania huxleyi (EHUX) and Chrysotila pseudoroscoffensis (CP), are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and contain bioactive compounds that can be explored to produce sustainable food packaging. In this study, for the first time, these microalgae were incorporated as fillers in starch-based films, envisioning the development of biodegradable and bioactive materials for food packaging applications. The films were obtained by solvent casting using different proportions of the filler (2.5, 5, 10, and 20%, w/w). For comparison, commercial CaCO3, used as filler in the plastic industry, was also tested. The incorporation of CaCO3 and microalgae (EHUX or CP) made the films significantly less rigid, decreasing Young's modulus up to 4.7-fold. Moreover, the incorporation of microalgae hydrophobic compounds as lipids turned the surface hydrophobic (water contact angles > 90°). Contrary to what was observed with commercial CaCO3, the films prepared with microalgae exhibited antioxidant activity, increasing from 0.9% (control) up to 60.4% (EHUX 20%) of ABTS radical inhibition. Overall, the introduction of microalgae biomass improved hydrophobicity and antioxidant capacity of starch-based films. These findings should be considered for further research using coccolithophores to produce active and sustainable food packaging material.

Abstract
Neutron capture reaction cross sections on 74 Ge are of importance to determine 74 Ge production during the astrophysical slow neutron capture process. We present new resonance data on 74 Ge( n , γ ) reactions below 70 keV neutron energy. We calculate Maxwellian averaged cross sections, combining our data below 70 keV with evaluated cross sections at higher neutron energies. Our stellar cross sections are in agreement with a previous activation measurement performed at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe by Marganiec et al., once their data has been re-normalised to account for an update in the reference cross section used in that experiment.

Abstract
Ocular inserts (InEye®), were prepared based on two distinct formulations of PCL-PEG-PCL block copolymers - one with 33 % and the other with 24 % of PEG 600. Ring-open-polymerisation was used to link ε-caprolactone monomers to PEG hydroxyl end-groups. Molecular weight, PCL/PEG ratio, mass loss and swelling of different polymeric samples where determined. Based on the previously prepared block copolymers, ophthalmic inserts were assembled. These were prepared with an ellipsoidal shape by dripping melted polymer over a micro-tablet of moxifloxacin, used as drug model for this study, which therefore became entrapped in a central core coated with a polymer layer that functioned as a control-release barrier. The release kinetics of the model drug revealed a strong dependence on the PEG percentage on the polymer. Inserts' size and the amount of drug immobilized also had an important effect on the drug release profile. All release profiles followed a zero-order pattern, with 95 % of the drug being release at a constant rate. With drug releases varying from 20 to 200 days, and no initial burst, InEye® performance is unique among drug delivery systems and seems to be a very promising new formulation technology for preparing tailor-made ophthalmic inserts for prolonged and constant release of drug, which is needed for chronic diseases such as glaucoma, where compliance to treatment is essential for preventing optic-nerve lesions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the relationship between lifestyle behaviours, emotional health factors, and low back pain (LBP) resilience. METHODS This retrospective longitudinal study utilised 1,065 twins with a recent history of LBP from the Washington State Twin Registry. A lifestyle behaviour score was built using variables of body mass index, physical activity engagement, sleep quality, smoking status, and alcohol consumption. An emotional health score was built using variables of the absence of depressed mood, perceived stress, and active coping. The main outcome was LBP resilience, assessed as recovery ("bouncing back"), and sustainability (maintaining high levels of function despite LBP). RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, there was no relationship between the lifestyle behaviour score (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.97-1.15, p = 0.218) and the emotional health score (OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.98-1.19, p = 0.142) with the likelihood of recovering from LBP. There was however, evidence of a positive association between the lifestyle behaviour score (β 0.20, 95% CI 0.04-0.36, p = 0.013), the emotional health score (β 0.22, 95% CI 0.00-0.43, p = 0.049), and greater levels of sustainability. These results were confirmed by a within-pair analysis (lifestyle behaviour score: β 1.79, 95% CI 0.05-3.53, p = 0.043) and (emotional health score: β 0.52, 95% CI 0.09-0.96, p = 0.021) adjusting for genetic and early shared environmental confounding. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggest that people who adopt optimal lifestyle behaviours and positive emotional factors are more likely to be resilient and maintain high levels of function despite suffering from LBP.

Abstract
Aims: To address the limitations of IR780 by preparing hydrophilic polymer-IR780 conjugates and to employ these conjugates in the assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) intended for cancer photothermal therapy. Materials & methods: The cyclohexenyl ring of IR780 was conjugated for the first time with thiol-terminated poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOx). This novel poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)-IR780 (PEtOx-IR) conjugate was combined with D-α-tocopheryl succinate (TOS), leading to the assembly of mixed NPs (PEtOx-IR/TOS NPs). Results: PEtOx-IR/TOS NPs displayed optimal colloidal stability as well as cytocompatibility in healthy cells at doses within the therapeutic range. In turn, the combination of PEtOx-IR/TOS NPs and near-infrared light reduced heterotypic breast cancer spheroid viability to just 15%. Conclusion: PEtOx-IR/TOS NPs are promising agents for breast cancer photothermal therapy.

Abstract
Spontaneous pneumothorax in pregnancy is an extremely rare cause of dyspnea with less than 100 cases reported in the literature. A 28-year-old primigravida at 39+4 weeks of gestation presented to the emergency department with sudden onset of dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain. A chest radiograph revealed a large, left-sided pneumothorax with a collapsed lung. A chest tube was placed with incomplete re-expansion of the lung. A cesarean section under epidural anesthesia was performed for suspected macrosomia. The postpartum was uneventful. Despite its rarity, spontaneous pneumothorax should be excluded in every pregnant woman presenting with sudden onset of dyspnea and chest pain. A heightened index of suspicion is essential for prompt management of this condition, avoiding adverse fetal and maternal outcomes. For a correct diagnosis and management, more solid recommendations and a multidisciplinary approach are needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE After a recommendation for iodine supplementation in pregnancy has been issued in 2013 in Portugal, there were no studies covering iodine status in pregnancy in the country. The aim of this study was to assess iodine status in pregnant women in Porto region and its association with iodine supplementation. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted at Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João, Porto, from April 2018 to April 2019. Pregnant women attending the 1st trimester ultrasound scan were invited to participate. Exclusion criteria were levothyroxine use, gestational age < 10 and ≥ 14 weeks, non-evolutive pregnancy at recruitment and non-signing of informed consent. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was measured in random spot urine by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. RESULTS Median UIC was 104 μg/L (IQR 62-189) in the overall population (n = 481) of which 19% had UIC < 50 µg/L. Forty three percent (n = 206) were not taking an iodine-containing supplement (ICS) and median UIC values were 146 µg/L (IQR 81-260) and 74 µg/L (IQR 42-113) in ICS users and non-users, respectively (p < 0.001). Not using an ICS was an independent risk factor for iodine insufficiency [adjusted OR (95% CI) = 6.00 (2.74, 13.16); p < 0.001]. Iodised salt use was associated with increased median iodine-to-creatinine ratio (p < 0.014). CONCLUSIONS A low compliance to iodine supplementation recommendation in pregnancy accounted for a mild-to-moderately iodine deficiency. Our results evidence the need to support iodine supplementation among pregnant women in countries with low household coverage of iodised salt. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a common complication in advanced stages of malignancy and is associated with poor prognosis. Non-expandable lung (NEL) often occurs and its presence influences the MPE approach. Our main objective was to assess risk factors for malignant NEL. METHODS Patients diagnosed with pathologically confirmed MPE between January 2012 and December 2018 in our institution were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic and clinical data of patients were reviewed and compared according to the presence or absence of NEL. A univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis were used to determine predictors of the development of NEL. RESULTS Of 365 patients included, 68 (18.6%) had NEL. After multivariate analysis, we found that loculated MPE (OR 8.63, 95%CI 4.30-17.33, p<0.001), complete hemithorax opacification (OR 2.81, 95%CI 1.17-6.76, p<0.021), lung cancer (OR 2.09, 95%CI 1.01-4.31, p=0.047) and higher effusion-serum LDH ratio (OR 1.09, 95%CI 1.00-1.17, p=0.039) were independent predictors of malignant NEL. There were no significant differences compared with expandable lung group regarding time from primary malignancy diagnosis to MPE diagnosis (3.0, IQR 0.0-75.8 vs 2.0, IQR 0.0-75.5 weeks, p=0.942) or MPE symptoms onset to MPE diagnosis (4.0, IQR 1.0-9.0 vs 3.0, IQR 1.0-9.0 weeks, p=0.497). Patients with NEL had a higher number of therapeutic pleural drainages (3.0, IQR 2.0-6.0 vs 2.0, IQR 1.0-3.0; p<0.001) and longer hospital stay (32.5, IQR 15.5-46.3 vs 21.0, IQR 11.0-36.0, p=0.007), measured in hospitalization days until the end of life, than patients with expandable lung. The rate of recurrence of pleural effusion was not significantly different between groups (p=0.291). Overall survival (OS) was 3.0 (95%CI, 2.3-3.7) months, regardless of lung expandability (p=0.923). CONCLUSION Loculated MPE, complete hemithorax opacification, lung cancer and a higher effusion-serum LDH ratio were found to be independent predictors for NEL. These patients underwent thoracocenteses more frequently and had longer hospitalization days, although without significant impact in the OS.

Abstract
Carbonaceous materials derived from biomass have been used as sustainable platforms for the growth of ZnO particles aiming the production of functional composite fillers. Kidney-bean pods were pyrolyzed by applying an experimental design that demonstrates that the specific surface area (SBET) of biochar is improved with increasing pyrolysis temperature combined with a short air-oxidation time. Meanwhile, the graphitization degree and the electrical conductivity (EC) of biochars were negatively affected by increasing the air-oxidation time. The biochar sample with the higher EC and the one with the higher SBET were selected to be functionalized with ZnO particles by a solvothermal methodology, obtaining composites with an EC and SBET properties superior to the ZnO-rGO composite, in addition to a similar antibacterial activity. The developed ZnO-biochar composite structures, which are more ecological and biocompatible than the ZnO composites derived from graphene sheets, can be applied as electrically conductive and active fillers.

Abstract
Bioplastics have emerged to minimize the ecological footprint of non-degradable plastics. However, the effect of their degradation in aquatic systems, including the interaction with toxic metals, is still unexplored. In this work, the influence of UV-aging on structure, chemistry, wettability, rigidity, and Hg-sorption of commercially available bioplastic (BIO)- and polyethylene (PE)-based films was studied. To mimetize the materials disposal in fresh-/saltwaters, non-saline/saline aqueous solutions were used in Hg-sorption studies. ATR-FTIR spectra revealed that the BIO film was a coblended starch/polyester-based material, whose microstructure, physicochemical, and mechanical properties changed after UV-aging to a higher extent than in PE film. AFM and kinetic modelling pointed out electrostatic interactions/complexation as the mechanisms involved in the increased Hg-sorption by the UV-aged BIO film. An increased salinity did not impair its Hg-sorption. Therefore, when disposed in aquatic systems, starch/polyester-based bioplastics can play a potential vector for amplifying Hg along the food chain.

Abstract
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a major neonatal life-threatening pathogen. We initially identified glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) as a promising vaccine candidate against GBS. Since GAPDH is highly conserved, we investigate whether GBS GAPDH maternal vaccination interferes with the intestinal colonization of the offspring and the development of its mucosal immune system and central nervous system. An altered gut microbiome with increased Proteobacteria is observed in pups born from vaccinated dams during early life. These pups present decreased relative expression of IL-1β, IL-17A, RegIIIγ and MUC2 in the distal colon. They also display increased CD11b, F4/80 and MHC class II expression on microglia in early life and marked reduction of Ly6C+ cells and neutrophils. Importantly, male mice born from vaccinated mothers present behavioral abnormalities during adulthood, including decreased exploratory behavior, a subtle anxious-like phenotype and global alterations in spatial learning and memory strategies, and higher sensitivity to a stressful stimulus. Our study highlights the danger of using ubiquitous antigens in maternal human vaccines against neonatal pathogens.

Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases worldwide. This type of infections can be healthcare-associated or community-acquired and affects millions of people every year. Different diagnostic procedures are available to detect pathogens in urine and they can be divided into two main categories: laboratory-based and point-of-care (POC) detection techniques. Traditional methodologies are often time-consuming, thus, achieving a rapid and accurate identification of pathogens is a challenging feature that has been pursued by many research groups and companies operating in this area. The purpose of this review is to compare and highlight advantages and disadvantages of the traditional and currently most used detection methods, as well as the emerging POC approaches and the relevant advances in on-site detection of pathogens´ mechanisms, suitable to be adapted to UTI diagnosis. Lately, the commercially available UTI self-testing kits and devices are helping in the diagnosis of urinary infections as patients or care givers are able to perform the test, easily and comfortably at home and, upon the result, decide when to attend an appointment/Urgent Health Care Unit.

Abstract
This study aimed at optimizing the one-step chemical activation and microwave pyrolysis of an agro-industrial waste to obtain a microporous activated carbon (AC) with superior textural and adsorptive properties by a fast, low-reagent and low-energy process. Spent brewery grains were used as precursor, and the antibiotics sulfamethoxazole (SMX), trimethoprim (TMP) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) were considered as target adsorbates. A fractional factorial design was applied to evaluate the effect of the main factors affecting the preparation of AC (activating agent, activating agent:precursor ratio, pyrolysis temperature and residence time) on relevant responses. Under optimized conditions (K2CO3 activation, pyrolysis at 800 °C during 20 min and a K2CO3:precursor ratio of 1:2), a microporous AC with specific surface area of 1405 m2 g-1 and large adsorption of target antibiotics (82-94%) was obtained and selected for further studies. Equilibrium times up to 60 min and maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities of 859 µmol g-1 (SMX), 790 µmol g-1 (TMP) and 621 µmol g-1 (CIP) were obtained. The excellent textural and adsorptive properties of the selected material were achieved with a very fast pyrolysis and low load of activating agent, highlighting the importance of optimization studies to decrease the environmental and economic impact of waste-based AC.

Abstract
The industrialization has brought advances that have enabled a better quality of life for people and improved production stages and business models. However, some impacts still need to be resolved, such as water pollution. Industrial pollutants containing potentially toxic metal ions are expensive for the industry, so studying new materials and new processes has helped solve this problem. Adsorption processes using biodegradable adsorbent materials have been presented as relevant alternatives for reusing metallic ions from water bodies and sewage networks. In this perspective, tannic acid (TA) immobilization in biodegradable polyurethane (PU) foams based on vegetable oil (castor oil) was used to remove metal ions Hg (II) and Pb (II) from water. The preliminary study was carried out in TA's immobilization in PUs, with a 2k order factorial experimental design. The responses were obtained and evaluated by gravimetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy using Central Composite Design (CCD). The molar concentration of 0.1000 mol L-1 by TA solution at pH equal to 7 and 19 hours of contact time was defined as optimal conditions for TA adsorption in the PU. The optimized PU-TA system was evaluated for removing Pb (II) and Hg (II) ions in aqueous solutions, and the tests showed that 59.93% and 51.48% were removed from water, respectively. The use of the PU-TA adsorbent system for removing metals in water can be widely valuable in industrial plants that need water treatment.

Abstract
Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation method with and without the assistance of an additive, namely, gelatin, agar-agar or pectin, using eco-friendly conditions and materials embodying a green synthesis process. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze the structure and morphology of the nanoparticles. Magnetic properties were investigated by SQUID magnetometry and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results show that the presence of the additives implies a higher reproducibility of the morphological magnetic nanoparticle characteristics compared with synthesis without any additive, with small differences associated with different additives. To assess their potential for magnetic hyperthermia, water-based suspensions of these nanoparticles were prepared with and without citric acid. The stable solutions obtained were studied for their structural, magnetic and heating efficiency properties. The results indicate that the best additive for the stabilization of a water-based emulsion and better heating efficiency is pectin or a combination of pectin and agar-agar, attaining an intrinsic loss power of 3.6 nWg-1.

Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute effects of different durations of the isometric forearm plank exercise (IFPE) on peak force, echo intensity, muscle thickness, and perception of effort in recreationally-trained participants. Fifteen resistance-trained participants (23±3years, 76.4±6.5kg, 173.3±6.5cm) performed the IFPE with bodyweight in one of three durations in a randomized order: a). 1-min, b). 2-min, and c). 3-min. Muscle thickness (MT), echo intensity (EI), peak force (PF), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured pre-test and post-test. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVAs (2×3) were used to test differences between tests (pre-test and post-test) and treatment (1-min, 2-min, and 3-min) for PF, MT, and EI. One-way ANOVA was used to compare RPE between treatments (1-min, 2-min, and 3- min). There was a significant increase between pre- and post-test only for 3-min IFPE (p=0.008). For EI, there was a significant increase between pre- and post-test only for 3-min IFPE (p<0.001). For PF, there were observed significant reductions on post-test between 1-min vs. 3-min (p<0.001) and 2-min vs. 3-min IFPE (p<0.001). For RPE, there were statistical differences between 1-min vs. 2-min (p<0.001), 1-min and 3-min (p<0.001), 2-min and 3-min (p=0.001). In conclusion, only 3-min IFPE induced an increase in MT and EI and a reduction in PF when compared to 1-min and 2-min (during the post-test). RPE increased with the increase in the duration of the IFPE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify predictors of immune-related adverse events (IRAEs) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Assess associations between outcomes and the development of IRAEs. METHODS Retrospective analysis of patients with NSCLC treated with ICIs between 2016 and 2020 in the Pulmonology Department of our hospital. Patients with and without IRAEs were compared. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictors of IRAEs. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) curves were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the long-rank test was used to assess survival differences between groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used to identify factors associated with PFS and OS. The value considered statistically significant was p≤0.05. RESULTS A total of 184 patients (77.7% men, mean age 66.9±9.5 years) treated with ICIs were analyzed. During follow-up, 49 (26.6%) patients developed IRAEs and 149 (81.0%) died. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, treatment with statins (OR:3.15; p = 0.007), previous systemic corticosteroid therapy (OR:3.99; p = 0.001), disease controlled as response to ICI (OR:5.93; p < 0.001) and higher hemoglobin values (OR:1.28; p = 0.040) were independent predictors for the development of IRAEs. Patients who developed IRAEs had significantly longer medians of PFS (41.0 vs 9.0 weeks, p < 0.001) and OS (89.0 vs 28.0 weeks; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with statins, pre-ICI systemic corticosteroids, higher baseline hemoglobin value and controlled disease as initial response to ICI had a higher risk of developing IRAEs. The development of IRAEs was associated with better outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Virtual fracture clinics (VFC) have been shown to be a safe and cost-effective way of managing outpatient referrals to the orthopaedic department. During the coronavirus pandemic there has been a push to reduce unnecessary patient contact whilst maintaining patient safety. Method A protocol was developed by the clinical team on how to manage common musculoskeletal presentations to A&E prior to COVID as part of routine service development. Patients broadly triaged into 4 categories; discharge with advice, referral to VFC, referral to face to face clinic or discussion with on call team. The first 9 months of data were analysed to assess types of injury seen and outcomes. Results In total 2489 patients were referred to VFC from internal and external sources. 734 patients were discharged without follow-up and 182 patients were discharged for physiotherapy review. Only 3 patients required admission. Regarding follow-ups, 431 patients had a virtual follow-up while 1036 of patients required further face to face follow up. 87 patients were triaged into subspecialty clinics. 37 patients were felt to have been referred inappropriately. Conclusions BOA guidelines state all patients must be reviewed within 72 hours of their orthopaedic injury. Implementation of a VFC allows this target to be achieved and at the same time reduce patient contact. Almost half the patients were discharged following VFC review, the remaining patients were followed up. This is especially relevant in the current pandemic where reducing unnecessary trips to hospital will benefit the patient and make the most of the resources available.

Abstract
A doença de Still é uma patologia inflamatória, caracterizada por febre, artralgias e exantema cutâneo. Trata-se de uma patologia rara, associada a manifestações bastante inespecíficas e que se revela um diagnóstico de exclusão. Torna-se fundamental excluir patologias infeciosas, assim como patologias autoimunes e quadros neoplásicos. Os autores descrevem o caso de uma jovem de 24 anos internada numa enfermaria de Medicina Interna por um quadro febril com cerca de 16 dias de evolução associado a artralgias, exantema maculopapular e analiticamente com aumento dos parâmetros inflamatórios. Ao longo do internamento, foram excluídos outros possíveis diagnósticos, concluindo-se tratar-se de uma doença de Still. Após a instituição de terapêutica imunossupressora, a doente apresentou evolução clínica e analítica favorável, sendo orientada a data da alta para a consulta externa de Medicina Interna – Doenças Autoimunes.

Abstract
Carbon nanostructures are widely used as fillers to tailor the mechanical, thermal, barrier, and electrical properties of polymeric matrices employed for a wide range of applications. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO), a carbon nanostructure from the graphene derivatives family, has been incorporated in composite materials due to its remarkable electrical conductivity, mechanical strength capacity, and low cost. Graphene oxide (GO) is typically synthesized by the improved Hummers’ method and then chemically reduced to obtain rGO. However, the chemical reduction commonly uses toxic reducing agents, such as hydrazine, being environmentally unfriendly and limiting the final application of composites. Therefore, green chemical reducing agents and synthesis methods of carbon nanostructures should be employed. This paper reviews the state of the art regarding the green chemical reduction of graphene oxide reported in the last 3 years. Moreover, alternative graphitic nanostructures, such as carbons derived from biomass and carbon nanostructures supported on clays, are pointed as eco-friendly and sustainable carbonaceous additives to engineering polymer properties in composites. Finally, the application of these carbon nanostructures in polymer composites is briefly overviewed.

Abstract
Puffer and porcupine fishes (families Diodontidae and Tetraodontidae, order Tetradontiformes) are known for their extraordinary ability to triple their body size by swallowing and retaining large amounts of seawater in their accommodating stomachs. This inflation mechanism provides a defence to predation; however, it is associated with the secondary loss of the stomach's digestive function. Ingestion of alkaline seawater during inflation would make acidification inefficient (a potential driver for the loss of gastric digestion), paralleled by the loss of acid-peptic genes. We tested the hypothesis of stomach inflation as a driver for the convergent evolution of stomach loss by investigating the gastric phenotype and genotype of four distantly related stomach inflating gnathostomes: sargassum fish, swellshark, bearded goby and the pygmy leatherjacket. Strikingly, unlike in the puffer/porcupine fishes, we found no evidence for the loss of stomach function in sargassum fish, swellshark and bearded goby. Only the pygmy leatherjacket (Monochanthidae, Tetraodontiformes) lacked the gastric phenotype and genotype. In conclusion, ingestion of seawater for inflation, associated with loss of gastric acid secretion, is restricted to the Tetraodontiformes and is not a selective pressure for gastric loss in other reported gastric inflating fishes.

Abstract
Aims: To develop a tumor-targeted chemo-photothermal nanomedicine through the functionalization of acridine orange (AO)-loaded gold-core mesoporous silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods with polyethylenimine (PEI) and hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: Functionalization of the AuMSS nanorods was achieved through the chemical linkage of PEI followed by electrostatic adsorption of HA. Results: HA functionalization improved AuMSS' cytocompatibility by decreasing blood hemolysis, and PEI-HA inclusion promoted a controlled and sustained AO release. In vitro assays revealed that HA functionalization increased the internalization of nanoparticles by human negroid cervix epithelioid carcinoma cancer (HeLa) cells, and the combinatorial treatment mediated by AuMSS/PEI/HA_AO nanorods presented an enhanced effect, with >95% of cellular death. Conclusion: AuMSS/PEI/HA_AO formulations can act as tumor-targeted chemo-photothermal nanomedicines for the combinatorial therapy of cervical cancer.

Abstract
The incorporation of carbon-based nanomaterials into biopolymer matrix, to provide mechanical reinforcement and to obtain electrically conductive bionanocomposites, requires the homogeneous dispersion of the fillers. Herein, it is investigated the influence of surfactant structures on the dispersibility of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) within starch matrix. Three different ionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium cholate (SC), are employed to disperse the MWNT. Films with MWNT-SC show better dispersibility and an increase of about 75% of tensile strength and 60% of Young's modulus compared with films using MWNT-SDS and MWNT-CTAB. Nevertheless, MWNT functionalized with CTAB impart the highest values of antioxidant activity (scavenging activity around 30% in 1.5 h) and electrical conductivity (σ =14.75 S/m) to starch matrix. The properties of starch-based films can be tailored according to the physical adsorption of each surfactant on MWNT surface and/or the interfacial interaction of the surfactant with starch chains.

Abstract
Gold core silica shell (AuMSS) nanorods present excellent physicochemical properties that allow their application as photothermal and drug delivery agents. Herein, AuMSS nanorods were dual-functionalized with Polyethylene glycol methyl ether (PEG-CH3 ) and Gelatin (GEL) to enhance both the colloidal stability and uptake by HeLa cancer cells. Additionally, the AuMSS nanorods were combined for the first time with IR780 (a heptamethine cyanine molecule) and its photothermal and photodynamic capacities were determined. The obtained results reveal that the encapsulation of IR780 (65 µg per AuMSS mg) increases the photothermal conversion efficiency of AuMSS nanorods by 10%, and this enhanced heat generation was maintained even after three irradiation cycles with a NIR (808 nm) laser. Moreover, the IR780-loaded AuMSS/T-PEG-CH3 /T-GEL presented ≈2-times higher uptake in HeLa cells, when compared to the non-coated counterparts, and successfully mediated the light-triggered generation of reactive oxygen species. Overall, the combination of photodynamic and photothermal therapy mediated by IR780-loaded AuMSS/T-PEG-CH3 /T-GEL nanorods effectively promoted the ablation of HeLa cancer cells.

Abstract
Glycolipids and phospholipids are the main reservoirs of omega polyunsaturated fatty acids in microalgae. Their extraction for the food industry requires food grade solvents, however, the use of these solvents is generally associated with low extraction yields. In this study, we evaluated the lipid extraction efficiency of food-grade ethanol, ultrasound-assisted ethanol (UAE) and dichloromethane/methanol (DCM) from Chlorella vulgaris cultivated under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. Yields of lipids, fatty acids (FA), and complex lipid profiles were determined by gravimetry, GC-MS, and LC-MS/MS, respectively. UAE and DCM showed the highest lipid yields with similar purity. The FA profiles were identical for all extracts. The polar lipidome of the DCM and UAE extracts was comparable, while the EtOH extracts were significantly different. These results demonstrated the effectiveness of UAE extraction to obtain high yields of polar lipids and omega-3 and -6-rich extracts from C. vulgaris that can be used for food applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have indicated that shift work, in particular night work, is associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain but the mechanisms are unclear. It has been suggested that sleep disturbance, a common complaint among shift and night workers, may induce low-grade inflammation as well as heightened pain sensitivity. AIMS Firstly, this study was aimed to examine the cross-sectional associations between shift work, C-reactive protein (CRP) level and chronic musculoskeletal pain, and secondly, to analyse CRP as a mediator between shift work and chronic musculoskeletal pain. METHODS The study included 23 223 vocationally active women and men who participated in the HUNT4 Survey of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT). Information was collected by questionnaires, interviews, biological samples and clinical examination. RESULTS Regression analyses adjusted for sex, age and education revealed significant associations between shift work and odds of any chronic musculoskeletal pain (odd ratio [OR] 1.11, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.19), between shift work and CRP level (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.03-1.16) and between CRP level 3.00-10 mg/L and any chronic musculoskeletal pain (OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.27-1.51). Shift work and CRP were also associated with number of chronic pain sites. Mediation analysis indicated that shift work was indirectly associated with any chronic musculoskeletal pain through CRP (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06). CONCLUSIONS The results support the hypothesis that shift work is associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain, and that systemic inflammation may be a biological mechanism linking shift work to chronic pain.

Abstract
Bionanocomposite materials have been designed as a promising route to enhance biopolymer properties, especially for food packaging application. The present study reports the preparation of bionanocomposite films of alginate with different loadings of pure reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or of mixed zinc oxide-rGO (ZnO-rGO) fillers by solvent casting. Sepiolite is used to make compatible rGO with the hydrophilic matrix. The addition of fillers to alginate matrix maintains the low water solubility promoted by the calcium chloride treatment, and, additionally, they demonstrate a weaker mechanical properties, and a slight increase in water vapor permeability and wettability. Due to the properties of ZnO-rGO, the alginate bionanocomposites show an increase of electrical conductivity with the increase of filler content. While the highest electrical conductivity (0.1 S/m) is achieved by the in-plane measurement, it is in the through-plane measurement the remarkable enhancement of almost 30 times greater than the alginate film. With 50% of ZnO-rGO filler, the bionanocomposites present the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The combination of electrical conductivity with bioactive properties makes these films promising not only to extend food shelf-life but also to allow packaged food sterilization at low temperature.

Abstract
Background Brain metastases (BM) are a rare complication in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and associated with an unfavorable survival prognosis. Primary tumor side (PTS) was shown to act as a prognostic and predictive biomarker in several trials including metastatic CRC (mCRC) patients. Here, we aim to investigate whether PTS is also associated with the outcome of CRC patients with BM. Methods Patients treated for CRC BM between 1988 and 2017 at an academic care center were included. Right-sided CRC was defined as located in the appendix, cecum and ascending colon and left-sided CRC was defined as located in the descending colon, sigma and rectum. Results Two hundred and eighty-one CRC BM patients were available for this analysis with 239/281 patients (85.1%) presenting with a left-sided and 42/281 patients (14.9%) with a right-sided primary CRC. BM-free survival (BMFS) was significantly longer in left-sided compared with right-sided CRC patients (33 versus 20 months, P = 0.009). Overall survival from CRC diagnosis as well as from diagnosis of BM was significantly longer in patients with a left-sided primary (42 versus 25 months, P = 0.002 and 5 versus 4 months, P = 0.005, respectively). In a multivariate analysis including graded prognostic assessment, PTS remained significantly associated with prognosis after BM (hazard ratio 0.65; 95% confidence interval: 0.46-0.92 months, P = 0.0016). Conclusions PTS was associated with survival times after the rare event of BM development in CRC patients. Therefore, its prognostic value remains significant even thereafter. Primary tumor side is a relevant and independent prognostic factor in mCRC. Left-sided CRC was associated with a significantly longer BMFS compared with right-sided CRC. OS from initial diagnosis of CRC as well as from BM was significantly longer in patients with left-sided primaries.

Abstract
Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a heterogenous group of diseases characterized by abnormal accumulation of eosinophils in the blood or peripheral tissues. It can affect all organs and therefore clinical manifestations are highly variable. We describe the case of a 38-year-old man admitted for febrile polyserositis. He developed cardiac tamponade requiring pericardiocentesis complicated by left ventricle perforation which was successfully repaired. He presented mild peripheral eosinophilia. Bronchoalveolar lavage evidenced eosinophilic alveolitis, and pleural and pericardium histopathology revealed the presence of abundant eosinophils. All other causes of tissue eosinophilia were excluded and the diagnosis of idiopathic HES was made. The patient was started on glucocorticoids with resolution of symptoms. This case report describes a rare but potentially fatal presentation of HES and demonstrates the difficulty and delay in diagnosis when peripheral hypereosinophilia is absent. LEARNING POINTS Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is characterized by abnormal accumulation of eosinophils in the blood or peripheral tissues.The clinical manifestations of HES are highly variable.It may be difficult to diagnose HES when peripheral hypereosinophilia is absent.

Abstract
Introduction Benzodiazepines (BZDs) and related drugs (BZRDs) are widely used to reduce agitation, anxiety and sleep disturbances in the elderly, despite concerns raised about their modest efficacy for such indications and risk of severe adverse effects, including acute consequences on cognition. Recently, some studies have also raised concerns about the long-term effect of BZDs, suggesting their association with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Objectives To review published synthesis studies on the risk of dementia development due to BZDs/BZRDs use. Methods An electronic search was conducted in PubMed. Meta-analysis, systematic and non-systematic reviews examining the association between BZDs/BZRDs and subsequent dementia were included. No language nor publication date restrictions were applied. Search results other than synthesis studies were excluded. Studies were screened for relevance based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results Overall, 246 results were obtained. After initial screening, nine studies were included. From these, three were systematic reviews with meta-analysis of observational studies (cohort and/or case-control), one was a systematic review from observational studies and five were non-systematic reviews. Most studies found an association between BZDs/BZRDs and subsequent dementia, with meta-analysis studies reporting an increased risk (OR) between 1,38 and 1,78, even after controlling for protopathic bias. However, difficulties in establishing a causal relationship are reported due to the considerable clinical and methodological heterogeneity of the primary studies. Conclusions Most studies suggest an association between the use of BZDs/BZRDs and dementia risk, highlighting that their prescription should be cautious, prevented or reduced to attenuate this risk.
