An investigation of adsorption parameters on ZVI-AC nanocomposite in the displacement of Se(IV) ions through CCD analysis

Novel benzothiazole-pyrazoline-styrene hybrid for ultrasensitive detection of Hg(II) ions: Synthesis and chemosensor evaluation

Water pollution has become a serious issue, and mercury(II) ion (Hg(II)) is highly toxic even at low concentrations. Therefore, Hg(II) concentration should be strictly monitored. This study evaluated pyrazoline compounds as fluorescence chemosensor agents for Hg(II) detection. These compounds were prepared from vanillin via etherification, Claisen-Schmidt, and cyclocondensation reactions, to yield benzothiazole-pyrazoline-styrene hybrid compounds. The hybrid compound without styrene was successfully synthesized in 97.70% yield with limit of detection (LoD) and limit of quantification (LoQ) values of 323.5 and 1078 μM, respectively. Conversely, the hybrid compound was produced in 97.29% yield with the LoD and LoQ values of 8.94 and 29.79 nM, respectively. Further spectroscopic investigations revealed that Hg(II) ions can either chelate with three nitrogen of pyridine, pyrazoline, and benzothiazole structures or two oxygen of vanillin and styrene. Furthermore, the hybrid compound was successfully applied in the direct quantification of Hg(II) ions in tap and underground water samples with a validity of 91.63% and 86.08%, respectively, compared with mercury analyzer measurement. The regeneration of pyrazoline was also easily achieved via the addition of an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid solution. These findings show the promising application of the benzothiazole-pyrazoline-styrene hybrid compound for Hg(II) monitoring in real environmental samples.

Selenite elimination via zero-valent iron modified biochar synthesized from tobacco straw and copper slag: Mechanisms and agro-industrial practicality

Cost-effectively improving the performance of biochar is essential for its large-scale practical application. In this work, the agro-industrial by-products copper slag and tobacco straw were employed for the preparation of modified biochar (CSBC). The obtained CSBC exhibited satisfactory capacity on Se(IV) immobilization of 190.53 mg/g, with surface interactions determined by the monolayer and mainly chemisorption. The removal mechanisms included chemical reduction, electrostatic attraction, co-precipitation, and formation of complexations. Interestingly, the existence of Cu2Se structure after adsorption indicated the involvement of Cu species within Se(IV) elimination. Moreover, the industrial agricultural practicality of CSBC was evaluated by regeneration tests, economic assessment, and pot experiments. The results demonstrate that iron species-modified biochar prepared from two agro-industrial by-products is a promising and feasible candidate for selenite removal from wastewater.

Preparation, characterization, and application of modified magnetic biochar for the removal of benzotriazole: process optimization, isotherm and kinetic studies, and adsorbent regeneration

The adsorption of benzotriazole (BTA) by chemically modified magnetic biochar (MMBC) as a cheap and abundant biosorbent was investigated and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Initially, the MMBC composite was synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. The characterization results confirmed the existence of Fe₃O₄ in the composite structure, which had uniformly dispersed over biochar (BC) with porous texture. Moreover, the presence of Zn and Cl elements in EDX analysis indicated that the magnetic biochar (MBC) had been modified successfully. The effects of chemical modification methods on the adsorption capacity of magnetic biochar were investigated. Maximum BTA removal efficiency was demonstrated by MMBC, modifying using ZnCl₂ (>99%). Optimization was carried out based on reaction time, BTA concentration and the concentration of adsorbent. Optimum experimental conditions for the removal of BTA from aqueous solutions were found to be 35 min of reaction time, 0.55 g/L of adsorbent, and 50 mg/L of initial BTA concentration. At these optimal conditions, the predicted BTA adsorption efficiency was 92.6%. The adsorption process followed the Avrami fractional-order reaction kinetic and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity of 563.1 mg/g. The values of thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that the adsorption of BTA on ZnCl₂-MBC is endothermic and spontaneous. Under optimum usage of MMBC, the adsorptive removal efficiency of BTA non-significantly decreased from 99.2 to 93.9% after the 5th cycle. Thus, MMBC can be recommended as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective adsorbent to remove micropollutants from water.

Treatment technologies for selenium contaminated water: A critical review

Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Substantial improvement in the adsorption behavior of montmorillonite toward Tartrazine through hexadecylamine impregnation

In the present work, the surface of montmorillonite K10 was successfully modified by hexadecylamine surfactant (Mt-HDA) and its intercalation and characteristics were assessed by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and BET methods. Also, its adsorption performance was systematically examined in the removal of Tartrazine (TZ), as a sulfonated azo dye model, from aqueous phase. Our results showed that the HDA modification remarkably improved the adsorption ability of montmorillonite toward TZ molecules. The highest adsorption efficiency was achieved >98% at the pH range of 4-6 within a fast process (less than 30 min). The maximum adsorption capacity Mt-HDA toward TZ molecules was found to be ~59 mg/g at 45 °C. The kinetic study indicated that the adsorption kinetic follows pseudo-second-order model, which shows the chemisorption process between Mt-HDA and TZ molecules. Besides, the adsorption isotherm showed the monolayer coverage of Mt-HDA surface adsorption sites, which was fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model in an exothermic process. The adsorption mechanism was studied.

The surfactant-ionic liquid bi-functionalization of chitosan beads for their adsorption performance improvement toward Tartrazine

In this study, the ionic liquid (Aliquat-336) and anionic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) bi-functionalized chitosan beads were prepared and characterised using different techniques, including FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS and BET surface area analysis. The characteristic analysis confirmed the successful conjugation of chitosan beads with both surfactant and ionic liquid. The novel fabricated beads (CS-CTAB-AL) were efficiently employed, as a high-performance adsorbent, for the removal of Tartrazine (TZ), an anionic food dye, from polluted water. The optimum adsorption of TZ onto the CS-CTAB-AL was found at 2 g L^-1 of adsorbent in the wide pH range of 4-11, whereas just 45 min was required to reach more than 90% adsorption efficiency in the studied conditions. Also, the adsorption and kinetic studies showed that the experimental data well fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of prepared beads was found to be 45.95 mg g^-1 at 45 °C. The adsorption properties of enabling CS-CTAB-AL conjugation introduced a new type of adsorbents, exploited the combination of ionic liquid and surfactant capabilities for wastewater treatment.

Removal of metal ions using a new magnetic chitosan nano-bio-adsorbent; A powerful approach in water treatment

In this study, a magnetic chitosan/Al₂O₃/Fe₃O₄ (M-Cs) nanocomposite was developed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) functionalization to enhance its adsorption behavior for the removal of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) metal ions from aqueous solution. The results revealed that the EDTA functionalization of M-Cs increased its adsorption capacity ~9.1, ~5.6 and ~14.3 times toward Cu, Cd and Zn ions. The maximum adsorption capacity followed the order of Cd(II) > Cu(II) > Zn(II) and the maximum adsorption efficiency was achieved at pH of 5.3 with the removal percentage of 99.98, 93.69 and 83.81 %, respectively, for the removal of Cu, Cd and Zn ions. The metal ions adsorption kinetic obeyed pseudo-second-order equation and the Langmuir isothermal was found the most fitted model for their adsorption isothermal experimental data. In addition, the thermodynamic study illustrated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous in nature.

A review on adsorptive separation of toxic metals from aquatic system using biochar produced from agro-waste

Water is a basic and significant asset for living beings. Water assets are progressively diminishing due to huge populace development, industrial activities, urbanization and rural exercises. Few heavy metals include zinc, copper, lead, nickel, cadmium and so forth can easily transfer into the water system either direct or indirect activities of electroplating, mining, tannery, painting, fertilizer industries and so forth. The different treatment techniques have been utilized to eliminate the heavy metals from aquatic system, which includes coagulation/flocculation, precipitation, membrane filtration, oxidation, flotation, ion exchange, photo catalysis and adsorption. The adsorption technique is a better option than other techniques because it can eliminate heavy metals even at lower metal ions concentration, simplicity and better regeneration behavior. Agricultural wastes are low-cost biosorbent and typically containing cellulose have the ability to absorb a variety of contaminants. It is important to note that almost all agro wastes are no longer used in their original form but are instead processed in a variety of techniques to improve the adsorption capacity of the substance. The wide range of adsorption capacities for agro waste materials were observed and almost more than 99% removal of toxic pollutants from aquatic systems were achieved using modified agro-waste materials. The present review aims at the water pollution due to heavy metals, as well as various heavy metal removal treatment procedures. The primary objectives of this research is to include an overview of adsorption and various agriculture based adsorbents and its comparison in heavy metal removal.

Critical review on hazardous pollutants in water environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, removal technologies and risk assessment

Water is required for the existence of all living things. Water pollution has grown significantly, over the decades and now it has developed as a serious worldwide problem. The presence and persistence of Hazardous pollutants such as dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, fertilizer and pesticides and their transformed products are the matter of serious environmental and health concerns. A variety of approaches have been tried to clean up water and maintain water quality. The type of pollutants present in the water determines the bulk of technological solutions. The main objective of this article was to review the occurrences and fate of hazardous contaminants (dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, and pesticides) found in wastewater effluents. These effluents mingle with other streams of water and that are utilized for a variety of reasons such as irrigation and other domestic activities that is further complicating the issue. It also discussed traditional treatment approaches as well as current advances in hazardous pollutants removal employing graphite oxides, carbon nanotubes, metal organic structures, magnetic nano composites, and other innovative forms of useable materials. It also discussed the identification and quantification of harmful pollutants using various approaches, as well as current advancements. Finally, a risk assessment of hazardous pollutants in water is provided in terms of the human health and the environment. This data is anticipated to serve as a foundation for future improvements in hazardous pollutant risk assessment. Furthermore, future studies on hazardous pollutants must not only emphasize on the parent chemicals, as well as on their possible breakdown products in various media.

Two-three parameters isotherm modeling, kinetics with statistical validity, desorption and thermodynamic studies of adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto zerovalent iron nanoparticles

Adsorption of problematic copper ions as one of the endocrine disruptive substances from aqueous solution onto nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) was studied. The high pore size 186.9268 Å, pore diameter 240.753 Å, and BET surface area 20.8643 m² g⁻¹ and pH(pzc) enlisted nZVI as an efficient nano-adsorbent for treatment of heavy metals from synthetic wastewater. SEM and EDX revealed the morphology and elemental distribution before and after adsorption. 98.31% removal efficiency was achieved at optimum adsorption operational parameters. Of all the thirteen isotherm models, equilibrium data were well fitted to Langmuir. Kinetics and mechanism data across the concentrations from 10 to 200 mg L⁻¹ were analyzed by ten models. PSO best described kinetics data as confirmed by various statistical error validity models. The intraparticle diffusion model described that the intraparticle diffusion was not the only rate-limiting step. The adsorption mechanism was diffusion governed established by Bangham and Boyd models. Feasible, spontaneous, endothermic, and degree of randomness were reveal by the thermodynamic studies. Better desorption index and efficiency were obtained using HCl suggesting multiple mechanism processes. The performance of ZVI suggested it has a great potential for effective removal of endocrine disruptive cationic contaminant from wastewater.
