Microstructures, mechanical properties and corrosion resistances of extruded Mg-Zn-Ca-xCe/La alloys

Assessment of the Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of Mg-1Zn-0.6Ca/Diamond Nanocomposites for Biomedical Applications

In this work, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of the Mg-1Zn-0.6Ca matrix alloy (ZX10), reinforced by adding various amounts of nanodiamond particles (0.5, 1, and 2 wt.%), prepared by the ultrasound-assisted stir-casting method, were investigated as they are deemed as potential implant materials in biomedical applications. Microstructure, nanoindentation, mechanical tensile, immersion, and potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed for evaluating the influence of the addition of nanodiamond particles on the alloy's mechanical and biocorrosion properties. The results revealed that the addition of nanodiamond particles causes a reduction in the alloy's grain size. The alloy's nanohardness and elastic modulus values increased when the amount of added nanodiamond particles were increased. The nanocomposite with an addition of 0.5% ND showed the best composition with regard to an acceptable corrosion rate as the corrosion rates are too high with higher additions of 1 or 2% NDs. At the same time, the yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation improved slightly compared to the matrix alloy.

Degradation Behavior and Mechanical Integrity of a Mg-0.7Zn-0.6Ca (wt.%) Alloy: Effect of Grain Sizes and Crystallographic Texture

The microstructural characteristics of biodegradable Mg alloys determine their performance and appropriateness for orthopedic fixation applications. In this work, the effect of the annealing treatment of a Mg-0.7Zn-0.6Ca (ZX11) alloy on the mechanical integrity, corrosive behavior, and biocompatibility-osteoinduction was studied considering two annealing temperatures, 350 and 450 °C. The microstructure showed a recrystallized structure, with a lower number of precipitates, grain size, and stronger basal texture for the ZX11-350 condition than the ZX11-450. The characteristics mentioned above induce a higher long-term degradation rate for the ZX11-450 than the ZX11-350 on days 7th and 15th of immersion. In consequence, the mechanical integrity changes within this period. The increased degradation rate of the ZX11-450 condition reduces 40% the elongation at failure, in contrast with the 16% reduction for the ZX11-350 condition. After that period, the mechanical integrity remained unchanged. No cytotoxic effects were observed for both treatments and significant differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into the osteoblast phenotype was observed.

Effects of Extrusion on Mechanical and Corrosion Resistance Properties of Biomedical Mg-Zn-Nd-xCa Alloys

Magnesium alloys act as ideal biomedical materials with good biocompatibility. In this paper, the extruded biomedical Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys were prepared and their microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion properties were investigated. The results showed that the surfaces of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys extruded at medium temperature were smooth and compact without cracks. The tensile strength and elongation of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys were 222.5 MPa and 20.2%, and 287.2 MPa and 18.4%, respectively. A large number of dislocations were generated in the grains and on grain boundaries after the extrusion. The alloy was immersed in simulating body fluid (SBF) for the weightlessness corrosion, and the corrosion products were analyzed by FTIR, SEM equipped with EDS. It was found that the corrosion rate of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5Ca and Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.8Ca alloy were 0.82 and 2.98 mm/a, respectively. Furthermore, the compact layer was formed on the surface of the alloy, which can effectively hinder the permeation of Cl⁻ and significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.

The current trends of Mg alloys in biomedical applications-A review

Magnesium (Mg) has emerged as an ideal alternative to the permanent implant materials owing to its enhanced properties such as biodegradation, better mechanical strengths than polymeric biodegradable materials and biocompatibility. It has been under investigation as an implant material both in cardiovascular and orthopedic applications. The use of Mg as an implant material reduces the risk of long-term incompatible interaction of implant with tissues and eliminates the second surgical procedure to remove the implant, thus minimizes the complications. The hurdle in the extensive use of Mg implants is its fast degradation rate, which consequently reduces the mechanical strength to support the implant site. Alloy development, surface treatment, and design modification of implants are the routes that can lead to the improved corrosion resistance of Mg implants and extensive research is going on in all three directions. In this review, the recent trends in the alloying and surface treatment of Mg have been discussed in detail. Additionally, the recent progress in the use of computational models to analyze Mg bioimplants has been given special consideration. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tensile Properties and Corrosion Behavior of Extruded Low-Alloyed Mg⁻1Sn⁻1Al⁻1Zn Alloy: The Influence of Microstructural Characteristics

A low-alloyed Mg–Sn–Al–Zn system was developed and successfully fabricated through the extrusion process. The dependence of tensile properties and corrosion behavior on microstructural characteristics of the studied alloy has been investigated. After extrusion, the alloy consists of fine dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains of ~2.65 μm and strongly textured coarse unDRXed grains. As a consequence, the extruded alloy showed a high-tensile yield strength (YS) of 259 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 297 MPa and elongation (EL) of 19.0%. The strengthening response was discussed in terms of grain size, texture and solutes. The as-extruded alloy presented severe pitting corrosion and the dependence of corrosion properties on the crystallographic orientation and the formation of corrosion products was analyzed.
