A DFT study on the central-ring doped HBC nanographenes

Investigation of the substituted-titanium nanocages using computational chemistry

We are investigated substitution effects of titanium heteroatoms on band gap, charge and local reactivity of C_20-nTi_n heterofullerenes (n = 1-5), at different levels and basis sets. The C₁₈Ti_2-2 nanocage is considered as the most kinetically stable species with the widest band gap of 2.86 eV, in which two carbon atoms are substituted by two Ti atoms in equatorial position, individually. The charges on carbon atoms of C₂₀ are roughly zero, while high positive charge (1.256) on the surface of C₁₉Ti₁ prompts this heteofullerene for hydrogen storage. The positive atomic charge on Ti atoms and negative atomic charge on their adjacent C atoms implies that these sites can be influenced more readily by nucleophilic and electrophilic regents, respectively. We examined the usefulness of local reactivity descriptors to predict the reactivity of Ti-C atomic sites on the external surface of the heterofullerenes. The properties determined include Fukui function (F.F.); f (k) and local softness s (k) on the surfaces of the investigated hollow cages. Geometry optimization results reveal that titanium atoms can be comfortably incorporated into the CC network of fullerene. It is most likely associated with the triple-coordination characteristic of titanium atoms, which can well match with the sp²-hybridized carbon bonding structure. According to the values of f (k) and s (k) for the C₁₅Ti₅ heterofullerene; the carbon atoms in the cap regions exhibit a different reactivity pattern than those in the equatorial portion of the heterofullerene. The titanium impurity can significantly improve the fullerene's surface reactivity and it allows controlling their surface properties. The band gap of C_20-nTi_n …..(H₂)_n structures is decreased with increasing n. Hence, C₁₅Ti₅ is found as the best hydrogen adsorbent.

First-principles studies on two-dimensional B3O3 adsorbent as a potential drug delivery platform for TEPA anticancer drug

The remarkable properties of pristine B₃O₃ nanosheet as a nanocarrier for adsorption and desorption of TEPA anticancer drug for designing potential drug delivery platform were investigated using periodic DFT calculations. We studied the adsorption energy of all stable complexes formed between the drug molecule and B₃O₃ in gas and aqueous phases along with electronic structure analysis of complexes. Different adsorption configurations were studied for drug/B₃O₃ complexes, including the interaction of the C atom of the triangular ring, O atom in the TEPA drug with the B atom in B₃O₃, and indirect drug interaction the middle of the R1 ring cavity of the B₃O₃ nanosheet. The take-up of TEPA prompts a substantial change of 68.13% in the band gap (E_g) of the B₃O₃ nanosheet in the most stable complex. The present study results affirmed the application of B₃O₃ nanosheet as a potential vehicle for TEPA drugs in the treatment of cancerous tissues.

Substitution effects via aromaticity, polarizability, APT, AIM, IR analysis, and hydrogen adsorption in C20-nTin nanostructures: a DFT survey

In this paper, the substitution effects of titanium heteroatom(s) on aromaticity, the average isotropic polarizability (< α >), the atomic polar tensor (APT) charge, the electrostatic potential (ESP) map, and the atoms in molecule (AIM) analysis along with infrared (IR) spectroscopy of C₂₀ fullerene and its C_20-nTi_n derivatives (n = 1-5) are probed via density functional theory (DFT). The nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) specify that substitution effect causes more aromaticity character of the optimized heterofullerenes than benzene molecule and higher APT charge distribution upon surfaces of them than pure cage. The highest negative and positive APT charge distribution on carbons of C₁₅Ti₅ and titanium substitutions of C₁₆Ti_4-2 implies that these sites can be attacked more readily by electrophilic and nucleophilic regents, respectively. We are very pleased to state that isolating the Ti-Ti single bonds by intermediacy of one or two C atoms is an applicable strategy for attaining the highest APT charge distribution on Ti atoms of C₁₆Ti_4-2 as suitable hydrogen storage. AIM analysis of the studied C_20-nAl_n derivatives signifies the highest electron density (ρ (r)) of 0.294 a.u. and the highest positive Laplacian of electron density (∇²ρ (r)) of 0.190 a.u., at bond critical points (BCPs) of C-Ti bond in the most stable C₁₉Ti₁ species. This heterofullerene shows the lowest < α > between the studied structures. IR spectroscopy shows that exclusive of C₁₆Ti_4-1 (as transition state), the other optimized hollow cages (as global minima) have no imaginary frequency.

Characterization of titanium influences on structure and thermodynamic stability of novel C20-nTin nanofullerenes (n=1-5): a density functional perspective

In this survey, effects of titanium heteroatom(s) on structural parameters and thermodynamic stability of C₂₀ fullerene and its C_20-nTi_n derivatives (n = 1-5) are compared and contrasted, at DFT levels of theory. The results show that in going from C₁₉Ti₁ to C₁₅Ti₅, binding energy increases while absolute value heat of atomization decreases. According to vibrational frequency analysis, excepting C₁₆Ti_4-1, the other optimized structures give no imaginary frequency as true minima. The calculated binding energy of 887.12 kcal mol^-1/atom displays C₁₅Ti₅ as the most thermodynamically stable heterofullerene. It has C_s symmetry and contains five titanium atoms alternatively in equatorial position. The substitutional doping of C₂₀ fullerene leads to high Mülliken charge distribution upon the surfaces of the resulted heterofullerenes especially C₁₉Ti₁ as suitable hydrogen storage. The contour plots indicate the most negative electrostatic potential by red color for C atoms, whereas the most positive electrostatic potential by yellow color for Ti heteroatoms. The contour plots and multiwfn analysis exhibit charge transfer from titanium heteroatoms to the neighboring carbon atoms. Furthermore, the resulted electron density maps from multiwfn qualitatively confirm the contour plot's findings. The hydrogen adsorption is an endothermic process for C₂₀ fullerene and exothermic process for C_20-nTi_n heterofullerenes. Major criteria examined for thermodynamic stability; from C₁₉Ti₁ to C₁₅Ti₅, binding energy and hydrogen adsorption increase while heat of atomization decreases.

The influence of Stone-Wales defects in nanographene on the performance of Na-ion batteries

The effect of the Stone-Wales (SW) defect on the energetic, structural, electronic properties of Na/Na⁺ adsorption on the Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) nanographene is investigated using density functional theory calculations. We showed that two kinds of SW defects can be generated in the structure of HBC, and the defected sheets are less stable than the intrinsic HBC by about 63.2-65.3 kcal/mol. The heptagonal ring of SW defect is the most favorable site for the Na and Na⁺ adsorption and the adsorption energies increase from -0.8 and -33.2 kcal/mol on the intrinsic HBC to -16.7 and -39.3 kcal/mol on the SW-HBC, respectively. The predicted energy barrier for an Na atom to move from a heptagonal ring to another one in the SW-HBC is about 4.9 kcal/mol, indicating a high ion mobility compared to the pristine HBC. The SW defect increases the Na diffusion coefficient from 3.46 × 10^-11 to 2.83 × 10^-6 cm²/s. Although the SW defect increases the ion mobility, it has an undesirable effect on the cell voltage, if a HBC nanographene is used in the anode of Na-ion batteries.

A novel aluminum-sensitive fluorescent chemosensor based on 4-aminoantipyrine: An experimental and theoretical study

A practical and an efficient Schiff base fluorescent chemosensor, salicylidene-4-aminoantipyrinyl-4-aminophenol (A2) has been synthesized through the condensation procedure of 1-phenyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-(N-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-3-pyrazoline-5-one and 4-aminophenol. Compound A2 has displayed a considerable fluorescence enhancement with high selectivity and sensitivity toward Al³⁺ ion and exhibited an emission band at 484 nm, which contained a low detection limit (LOD) of 1.06 × 10^-7 M. In accordance to the experimental study, DFT, TDDFT calculations, and the enhancement of fluorescence intensity might be attributed to the inhibition of Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) along with the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT). As it has been specified by Job's plot and DFT calculations, the binding stoichiometries of A2 with Al³⁺ are 1:1, while the association constant (Ka) of Al³⁺ has been calculated and observed to be 2.67 × × 10⁵ M^-1. Furthermore, the binding behavior and sensing mechanism of A2 with Al³⁺ have been confirmed through the experiments of ¹H NMR titration.

A DFT study on graphene, SiC, BN, and AlN nanosheets as anodes in Na-ion batteries

A great concern exists about the lifetime, cost, low-temperature performance, and safety of Li-ion batteries. Na-ion batteries (NIB) are an alternative to the Li-ion batteries due to the wide availability of sodium, its low cost, and nontoxicity. Here, we examined the Na and Na⁺ adsorption on nanosheets of carbon (graphene), AlN, BN, and SiC to explore their potential use as an anode in NIBs. The interaction of atomic Na was found to play the main role in producing different nanosheet cell voltages. Unlike the graphene and SiC nanosheets, the lone pairs on the surface of the AlN and BN nanosheets hinder the Na adsorption and significantly increase the cell voltage. The order of magnitude of the nanosheet cell voltage as an anode in NIBs is as follows: AlN (1.49 V) > BN (1.46 V) > > C (0.69 V) > SiC (0.61 V). The AlN and BN nanosheets may be appropriate compounds for NIBs and their cell voltages are comparable with carbon nanotubes.

Na-ion batteries based on the inorganic BN nanocluster anodes: DFT studies

It has been recently indicated that the Li-ion batteries may be replaced by Na-ion batteries because of their low safety, high cost, and low-temperature performance, and lack of the Li mineral reserves. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we studied the potential application of B₁₂N₁₂ nanoclusters as anode in Na-ion batteries. Our calculations indicate that the adsorption energy of Na⁺ and Na are about -23.4 and -1.4kcal/mol, respectively, and the pristine BN cage to improve suffers from a low cell voltage (∼0.92V) as an anode in Na-ion batteries. We presented a strategy to increase the cell voltage and performance of Na-ion batteries. We showed that encapsulation of different halides (X=F^-, Cl^-, or Br^-) into BN cage significantly increases the cell voltage. By increasing the atomic number of X, the Gibbs free energy change of cell becomes more negative and the cell voltage is increased up to 3.93V. The results are discussed based on the structural, energetic, frontier molecular orbital, charge transfer and electronic properties and compared with the performance of other nanostructured anodes.
