Through-space R3-HETCOR experiments between spin-1/2 and half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solid-state NMR

High-resolution indirect detection of spin-3/2 quadrupolar nuclei in solids using multiple-quantum-filtered through-space D-HMQC experiments

Through-space heteronuclear correlation experiments under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions can provide unique insights into inter-atomic proximities. In particular, it has been shown that experiments based on two consecutive coherence transfers, 1H → I → 1H, like D-HMQC (dipolar-mediated heteronuclear multiple-quantum correlation), are usually more sensitive for the indirect detection via protons of spin-3/2 quadrupolar nuclei with low gyromagnetic ratio. Nevertheless, the resolution is often decreased by the second-order quadrupolar broadening along the indirect dimension. To circumvent this issue, we incorporate an MQMAS (multiple-quantum MAS) quadrupolar filter into the t1 evolution period of the D-HMQC sequence, which results in a novel pulse sequence called D-HMQC-MQ. The triple-quantum coherences evolving during this filter are excited and reconverted using cosine-modulated long-pulses synchronized with the sample rotation to avoid spinning sidebands in the indirect dimension. The desired coherence transfer pathways during this sequence are selected using two nested cogwheel phase cycles with 56 steps. This high-resolution heteronuclear correlation technique is demonstrated experimentally for the indirect detection via 1H of spin-3/2 isotopes, such as 11B, 23Na and 35Cl, in zinc borate hydrate, NaH2PO4 and l-histidine hydrochloride, respectively. We show that this experiment can be applied at high magnetic fields up to 28.2 T for protons subject to chemical shift anisotropies larger than 20 ppm, provided the MAS frequency is sufficiently stable since the D-HMQC-MQ experiment, like the parent D-HMQC, is sensitive to MAS fluctuations, which can produce t1-noise.

Defects tune the acidic strength of amorphous aluminosilicates

Crystalline zeolites have high acidity but limited utility due to microporosity, whereas mesoporous amorphous aluminosilicates offer better porosity but lack sufficient acidity. In this work, we investigated defect engineering to fine-tune the acidity of amorphous acidic aluminosilicates (AAS). Here we introduced oxygen vacancies in AAS to synthesize defective acidic aluminosilicates (D-AAS). 1H, 27Al, and 17O solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies indicated that defects induced localized structural changes around the acidic sites, thereby modifying their acidity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies substantiated that oxygen vacancies alter the chemical environment of Brønsted acidic sites of AAS. The effect of defect creation in AAS on its acidity and catalytic behavior was demonstrated using four different acid-catalyzed reactions namely, styrene oxide ring opening, vesidryl synthesis, Friedel-Crafts alkylation, and jasminaldehyde synthesis. The defects played a role in activating reactants during AAS-catalyzed reactions, enhancing the overall catalytic process. This was supported by in-situ FTIR, which provided insights into the molecular-level reaction mechanism and the role of defects in reactant activation. This study demonstrates defect engineering as a promising approach to fine-tune acidity in amorphous aluminosilicates, bridging the porosity and acidity gaps between mesoporous amorphous aluminosilicates and crystalline zeolites.

17O Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy of Lipid Membranes

Despite the limitations posed by poor sensitivity, studies have reported the unique advantages of 17O based NMR spectroscopy to study systems existing in liquid, solid, or semisolid states. 17O NMR studies have exploited the remarkable sensitivity of quadrupole coupling and chemical shift anisotropy tensors to the local environment in the characterization of a variety of intra- and intermolecular interactions and motion. Recent studies have considerably expanded the use of 17O NMR to study dynamic intermolecular interactions associated with some of the challenging biological systems under magic angle spinning (MAS) and aligned conditions. The very fast relaxing nature of 17O has been well utilized in cellular and in vivo MRS (magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) applications. The main focus of this Review is to highlight the new developments in the biological solids with a detailed discussion for a few selected examples including membrane proteins and nanodiscs. In addition to the unique benefits and limitations, the remaining challenges to overcome, and the impacts of higher magnetic fields and sensitivity enhancement techniques are discussed.

An unusual ionic cocrystal of ponatinib hydrochloride: characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ultra-high field NMR spectroscopy

This study describes the discovery of a unique ionic cocrystal of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) ponatinib hydrochloride (pon·HCl), and characterization using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and solid-state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy. Pon·HCl is a multicomponent crystal that features an unusual stoichiometry, with an asymmetric unit containing both monocations and dications of the ponatinib molecule, three water molecules, and three chloride ions. Structural features include (i) a charged imidazopyridazine moiety that forms a hydrogen bond between the ponatinib monocations and dications and (ii) a chloride ion that does not feature hydrogen bonds involving any organic moiety, instead being situated in a "square" arrangement with three water molecules. Multinuclear SSNMR, featuring high and ultra-high fields up to 35.2 T, provides the groundwork for structural interpretation of complex multicomponent crystals in the absence of diffraction data. A 13C CP/MAS spectrum confirms the presence of two crystallographically distinct ponatinib molecules, whereas 1D 1H and 2D 1H-1H DQ-SQ spectra identify and assign the unusually deshielded imidazopyridazine proton. 1D 35Cl spectra obtained at multiple fields confirm the presence of three distinct chloride ions, with density functional theory calculations providing key relationships between the SSNMR spectra and H⋯Cl- hydrogen bonding arrangements. A 2D 35Cl → 1H D-RINEPT spectrum confirms the spatial proximities between the chloride ions, water molecules, and amine moieties. This all suggests future application of multinuclear SSNMR at high and ultra-high fields to the study of complex API solid forms for which SCXRD data are unavailable, with potential application to heterogeneous mixtures or amorphous solid dispersions.

Inductively Coupled Nonthermal Plasma Synthesis of Size-Controlled γ-Al2O3 Nanocrystals

Gamma alumina (γ-Al2O3) is widely used as a catalyst and catalytic support due to its high specific surface area and porosity. However, synthesis of γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals is often a complicated process requiring high temperatures or additional post-synthetic steps. Here, we report a single-step synthesis of size-controlled and monodisperse, facetted γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals in an inductively coupled nonthermal plasma reactor using trimethylaluminum and oxygen as precursors. Under optimized conditions, we observed phase-pure, cuboctahedral γ-Al2O3 nanocrystals with defined surface facets. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies revealed that nanocrystal surfaces are populated with AlO6, AlO5 and AlO4 units with clusters of hydroxyl groups. Nanocrystal size tuning was achieved by varying the total reactor pressure yielding particles as small as 3.5 nm, below the predicted thermodynamic stability limit for γ-Al2O3.

Satellite-transition double cross-polarization HETCOR under fast MAS

Double-cross polarization to the satellite-transitions (STs) of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei is demonstrated using proton-detected heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) under fast magic-angle spinning (MAS). By placing the rf frequency away from the central-transition (CT) and selective to the STs, average Hamiltonian theory shows a scaled effective rf field with a phase equal to the complex ST spinning sideband being irradiated. Such an effective rf field can excite and spinlock STs but the phase spread usually leads to signal cancellation in one-step excitation or cross polarization experiments. The cancellation does not occur for two-step double cross-polarization (DCP) HETCOR experiments, therefore high efficiencies can be obtained. With careful magic-angle calibration, ST and double-quantum ST (DQST) HETCOR experiments are demonstrated with the ³⁵Cl nuclei in histidine·HCl·H₂O. These experiments provide additional information over the commonly observed CT spectra and near isotropic resolution in the case of DQST of spin S = 3/2 quadrupolar nuclei.

Ultrafast Magic Angle Spinning Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy: Advances in Methodology and Applications

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is one of the most commonly used techniques to study the atomic-resolution structure and dynamics of various chemical, biological, material, and pharmaceutical systems spanning multiple forms, including crystalline, liquid crystalline, fibrous, and amorphous states. Despite the unique advantages of solid-state NMR spectroscopy, its poor spectral resolution and sensitivity have severely limited the scope of this technique. Fortunately, the recent developments in probe technology that mechanically rotate the sample fast (100 kHz and above) to obtain "solution-like" NMR spectra of solids with higher resolution and sensitivity have opened numerous avenues for the development of novel NMR techniques and their applications to study a plethora of solids including globular and membrane-associated proteins, self-assembled protein aggregates such as amyloid fibers, RNA, viral assemblies, polymorphic pharmaceuticals, metal-organic framework, bone materials, and inorganic materials. While the ultrafast-MAS continues to be developed, the minute sample quantity and radio frequency requirements, shorter recycle delays enabling fast data acquisition, the feasibility of employing proton detection, enhancement in proton spectral resolution and polarization transfer efficiency, and high sensitivity per unit sample are some of the remarkable benefits of the ultrafast-MAS technology as demonstrated by the reported studies in the literature. Although the very low sample volume and very high RF power could be limitations for some of the systems, the advantages have spurred solid-state NMR investigation into increasingly complex biological and material systems. As ultrafast-MAS NMR techniques are increasingly used in multidisciplinary research areas, further development of instrumentation, probes, and advanced methods are pursued in parallel to overcome the limitations and challenges for widespread applications. This review article is focused on providing timely comprehensive coverage of the major developments on instrumentation, theory, techniques, applications, limitations, and future scope of ultrafast-MAS technology.

Effective Hamiltonian and spin dynamics in fast MAS TRAPDOR-HMQC experiments involving spin-3/2 quadrupolar nuclei

We present a theoretical and numerical description of the spin dynamics associated with TRAPDOR-HMQC (T-HMQC) experiment for a ¹H (I) - ³⁵Cl (S) spin system under fast magic angle spinning (MAS). Towards this an exact effective Hamiltonian describing the system is numerically evaluated with matrix logarithm approach. The different magnitudes of the heteronuclear and pure S terms in the effective Hamiltonian allow us to suggest a truncation approximation, which is shown to be in excellent agreement with the exact time evolution. Limitations of this approximation, especially at the rotary resonance condition, are discussed. The truncated effective Hamiltonian is further employed to monitor the buildup of various coherences during TRAPDOR irradiation. We observe and explain a functional resemblance between the magnitude of different terms in the truncated effective Hamiltonian and the amplitudes of various coherences during TRAPDOR irradiation, as function of crystallite orientation. Subsequently, the dependence of the sign (phase) of the T-HMQC signal on the coherence type generated is investigated numerically and analytically. We examine the continuous creation and evolution of various coherences at arbitrary times, i.e., at and between avoided level crossings. Behavior between consecutive crossings is described analytically and reveals 'quadrature' evolution of pairs of coherences and coherence interconversions. The adiabatic, sudden, and intermediate regimes for T-HMQC experiments are discussed within the approach established by A. J. Vega. Equations as well as numerical simulations suggest the existence of a driving coherence which builds up between consecutive crossings and then gets distributed at crossings among other coherences. In the intermediate regime, redistribution of the driving coherence to other coherences is almost uniform such that coherences involving S-spin double-quantum terms may be efficiently produced.

Effect of the P/Al Molar Ratio and Heating Rate on the Composi-Tion of Alumino-Phosphate Binders

New insights into the chemistry of alumino-phosphate solutions are provided in this contribution. In a first part, a solution with a P/Al molar ratio of 3.2 was prepared for the first time. The binders obtained at 500 and 700 °C were compared to those obtained with the 3 and 3.5 P/Al molar ratio solutions in order to determine the impact of moderate P2O5 excess on the final phosphate ceramic nature. In a second part, the widely used P/Al = 3 solution was heat-treated at 500 °C using different heating rates (0.2, 1, and 10 °C/min) to determine how this parameter modifies the final phosphate ceramic composition. Our data show that moderate P2O5 excess is sufficient to obtain binders with a high amount of stable cubic aluminium metaphosphate compound at 700 °C but not at 500 °C, where significant P2O5 excess is mandatory. We also show that slow heating favors the formation of cubic aluminium metaphosphate compound at 500 °C.

NMR Crystallography Reveals Carbonate Induced Al-Ordering in ZnAl Layered Double Hydroxide

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) serve a score of applications in catalysis, drug delivery, and environmental remediation. Smarter crystallography, combining X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy revealed how interplay between carbonate and pH determines the LDH structure and Al ordering in ZnAl LDH. Carbonate intercalated ZnAl LDHs were synthesized at different pH (pH 8.5, pH 10.0, pH 12.5) with a Zn/Al ratio of 2, without subsequent hydrothermal treatment to avoid extensive recrystallisation. In ideal configuration, all Al cations should be part of the LDH and be coordinated with 6 Zn atoms, but NMR revealed two different Al local environments were present in all samples in a ratio dependent on synthesis pH. NMR-crystallography, integrating NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction, succeeded to identify them as Al residing in the highly ordered crystalline phase, next to Al in disordered material. With increasing synthesis pH, crystallinity increased, and the side phase fraction decreased. Using ¹ H-¹³ C, ¹³ C-²⁷ Al HETCOR NMR in combination with ²⁷ Al MQMAS, ²⁷ Al-DQ-SQ measurements and Rietveld refinement on high-resolution PXRD data, the extreme anion exchange selectivity of these LDHs for CO₃ ^2- over HCO₃ ^- was linked to strict Al and CO₃ ^2- ordering in the crystalline LDH. Even upon equilibration of the LDH in pure NaHCO₃ solutions, only CO₃ ^2- was adsorbed by the LDH. This reveals the structure directing role of bivalent cations such as CO₃ ^2- during crystallization of [M²⁺ ₄ M³⁺ ₂ (OH)₂ ]²⁺ [A^2- ]₁ ⋅yH₂ O LDH phases.

Two- and Three-Dimensional 13C-17O Heteronuclear Correlation NMR Spectroscopy for Studying Organic and Biological Solids

We report two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) ¹³C-¹⁷O heteronuclear correlation solid-state NMR experiments under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions. These experiments utilize the D-RINEPT (Dipolar-mediated Refocused Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer) scheme with symmetry-based SR4₁² recoupling blocks for coherence transfer between ¹³C and ¹⁷O nuclei. First, a 2D ¹⁷O → ¹³C correlation experiment was performed for the [1-¹³C,¹⁷O]-Gly/Gly·HCl cocrystal and [U-¹³C, 1-¹⁷O]-α/β-d-glucose samples. Second, a 2D ¹⁷O → ¹³C MQ-D-RINEPT correlation experiment where the indirect dimension incorporates the multiple-quantum MAS (MQMAS) scheme was tested for obtaining isotropic ¹⁷O resolution with [U-¹³C, 1-¹⁷O]-α/β-d-glucose. Third, a new 3D ¹⁷O → ¹³C → ¹³C correlation experiment was demonstrated where ¹⁷O → ¹³C and ¹³C → ¹³C correlations are achieved by D-RINEPT and DARR (Dipolar Assisted Rotational Resonance) sequences, respectively (thus termed as a 3D D-RINEPT/DARR OCC experiment). This new 3D ¹⁷O NMR experiment is implemented with the aim for site-resolved solid-state ¹⁷O NMR studies.

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy as a powerful tool to investigate the location of fluorinated lipids in highly porous hybrid organic-inorganic nanoparticles

Nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs) have emerged as a new class of biodegradable and nontoxic nanomaterials of high interest for biomedical applications thanks to the possibility to load large amounts of a wide variety of therapeutic molecules in their porous structure. The surface of the highly porous nanoMOFs is usually engineered to increase their colloidal stability, to tune their interactions with the biological environment, and to allow targeting specific cells or organs. However, the atomic-scale analysis of these complex core-shell materials is highly challenging. In this study, we report the investigation of aluminum-based nanoMOFs containing two fluorinated lipids by solid-state NMR spectroscopy, including ²⁷ Al, ¹ H and ¹⁹ F MAS NMR. The ensemble of NMR data provides a better understanding of the localization and conformation of the fluorinated lipids inside the pores or on the nanoMOF surface.

Through-space 11 B-27 Al correlation: Influence of the recoupling channel

Through-space heteronuclear correlation (D-HETCOR) experiments based on heteronuclear multiple-quantum correlation (D-HMQC) and refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer (D-RINEPT) sequences have been proven to be useful approaches for the detection of the spatial proximity between half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solids under magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions. The corresponding pulse sequences employ coherence transfers mediated by heteronuclear dipolar interactions, which are reintroduced under MAS by radiofrequency irradiation of only one of the two correlated nuclei. We investigate herein using numerical simulations of spin dynamics and solid-state NMR experiments on magnesium aluminoborate glass how the choice of the channel to which the heteronuclear dipolar recoupling is applied affects the transfer efficiency of D-HMQC and D-RINEPT sequences between ¹¹ B and ²⁷ Al nuclei. Experimental results show that maximum transfer efficiency is achieved when the recoupling scheme is applied to the channel, for which the spin magnetization is parallel to the B₀ axis in average.

Probing 29Si-17O connectivities and proximities by solid-state NMR

The measurement of dipolar and J- couplings between ²⁹Si and ¹⁷O isotopes is challenging owing to (i) the low abundance of both isotopes and (ii) their close Larmor frequencies, which only differ by 19%. These issues are circumvented here by the use of isotopic enrichment and dedicated triple-resonance magic-angle spinning NMR probe. The surface of ²⁹Si-enriched silica was labelled with ¹⁷O isotope and heated at 80 and 200 °C. ²⁹Si-¹⁷O connectivities and proximities were probed using two-dimensional (2D) through-bond and through-space heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherences (J- and D-HMQC) experiments between ¹⁷O and ²⁹Si nuclei. The simulation of the build-up of the J- and D-HMQC signals allowed the first experimental measurement of J- and dipolar coupling constants between ¹⁷O and ²⁹Si nuclei. These HMQC experiments allow distinguishing two distinct siloxane (SiOSi) oxygen sites: (i) those covalently bonded to Q³ and Q⁴ groups, having a hydroxyl group as a second neighbour and (ii) those covalently bonded to two Q⁴ groups. The measured J- and dipolar coupling constants of siloxane ¹⁷O nucleus with Q^{4 29}Si nuclei differ from those with Q^{3 29}Si nuclei. These results indicate that the ²⁹Si-¹⁷O one-bond J-coupling and Si-O bond length depend on the second neighbours of the Si atoms.

A comparison of through-space population transfers from half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei to 1H using MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR under fast MAS

In this article, we compare the various schemes of magnetization transfer from half-integer quadrupolar spins to ¹H nuclei and we establish an efficient protocol to perform these transfers under MQMAS high-resolution with the MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR experiments under fast MAS. The MQMAS efficiencies are analyzed with SIMPSON simulations, and the CPMAS and RINEPT magnetization transfers are compared at 62.5 kHz MAS using {²³Na}-¹H and {²⁷Al}-¹H MQ-HETCOR and MQ-SPAM-HETCOR experiments performed on NaH₂PO4, Na₂HPO₄, Na citrate dihydrate and ipa-AlPO-14 powder samples. We discuss the pros and cons of these approaches, aiming to record 2D spectra of the best possible quality under fast MAS. We also incorporate some experimental approaches to reduce the total experiment time of such long 2D experiments.

Proton-detected solid-state NMR spectroscopy of spin-1/2 nuclei with large chemical shift anisotropy

Constant-time (CT) dipolar heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (D-HMQC) has previously been demonstrated as a method for proton detection of high-resolution wideline NMR spectra of spin-1/2 nuclei with large chemical shift anisotropy (CSA). However, ¹H transverse relaxation and t₁-noise often reduce the sensitivity of D-HMQC experiments, preventing the theoretical gains in sensitivity provided by ¹H detection from being realized. Here we demonstrate a series of improved pulse sequences for ¹H detection of spin-1/2 nuclei under fast MAS, with ¹⁹⁵Pt SSNMR experiments on cisplatin as an example. First, a t₁-incrementation protocol for D-HMQC dubbed Arbitrary Indirect Dwell (AID) is demonstrated. AID allows the use of arbitrary, rotor asynchronous t₁-increments, but removes the constant time period from CT D-HMQC, resulting in improved sensitivity by reducing transverse relaxation losses. Next, we show that short high-power adiabatic pulses (SHAPs), which efficiently invert broad MAS sideband manifolds, can be effectively incorporated into ¹H detected symmetry-based resonance echo double resonance (S-REDOR) and t₁-noise eliminated (TONE) D-HMQC experiments. The S-REDOR experiments with SHAPs provide approximately double the dipolar dephasing, as compared to experiments with rectangular inversion pulses. We lastly show that sensitivity and resolution can be further enhanced with the use of swept excitation pulses as well as adiabatic magic angle turning (aMAT).

Doxorubicin-Loaded Metal-Organic Frameworks Nanoparticles with Engineered Cyclodextrin Coatings: Insights on Drug Location by Solid State NMR Spectroscopy

Recently developed, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs) functionalized with versatile coatings are drawing special attention in the nanomedicine field. Here we show the preparation of core-shell MIL-100(Al) nanoMOFs for the delivery of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). DOX was efficiently incorporated in the MOFs and was released in a progressive manner, depending on the initial loading. Besides, the coatings were made of biodegradable γ-cyclodextrin-citrate oligomers (CD-CO) with affinity for both DOX and the MOF cores. DOX was incorporated and released faster due to its affinity for the coating material. A set of complementary solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) experiments including 1H-1H and 13C-27Al two-dimensional NMR, was used to gain a deep understanding on the multiple interactions involved in the MIL-100(Al) core-shell system. To do so, 13C-labelled shells were synthesized. This study paves the way towards a methodology to assess the nanoMOF component localization at a molecular scale and to investigate the nanoMOF physicochemical properties, which play a main role on their biological applications.

Structure Determination of Boron-Based Oxidative Dehydrogenation Heterogeneous Catalysts with Ultra-High Field 35.2 T 11B Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

Boron-based heterogenous catalysts, such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as well as supported boron oxides, are highly selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes to olefins. Previous catalytic measurements and molecular characterization of boron-based catalysts by ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectroscopy and other techniques suggests that oxidized/hydrolyzed boron clusters are the catalytically active sites for ODH. However, ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectroscopy often suffers from limited resolution because boron-11 is an I = 3/2 half-integer quadrupolar nucleus. Here, ultra-high magnetic field (B ₀ = 35.2 T) is used to enhance the resolution of ¹¹B solid-state NMR spectra and unambiguously determine the local structure and connectivity of boron species in h-BN nanotubes used as a ODH catalyst (spent h-BNNT), boron substituted MCM-22 zeolite [B-MWW] and silica supported boron oxide [B/SiO₂] before and after use as an ODH catalyst. One-dimensional direct excitation ¹¹B NMR spectra recorded at B ₀ = 35.2 T are near isotropic in nature, allowing for the easy identification of all boron species. Two-dimensional ¹H-¹¹B heteronuclear correlation NMR spectra aid in the identification of boron species with B-OH functionality. Most importantly, 2D ¹¹B dipolar double-quantum single-quantum homonuclear correlation NMR experiments were used to unambiguously probe boron-boron connectivity within all heterogeneous catalysts. These experiments are practically infeasible at lower, more conventional magnetic fields due to a lack of resolution and reduced NMR sensitivity. The detailed molecular structures determined for the amorphous oxidized/hydrolyzed boron layers on these heterogenous catalysts will aid in the future development of next generation ODH catalysts.

The Atomic-Level Structure of Cementitious Calcium Aluminate Silicate Hydrate

Despite use of blended cements containing significant amounts of aluminum for over 30 years, the structural nature of aluminum in the main hydration product, calcium aluminate silicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), remains elusive. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that aluminum is incorporated into the bridging sites of the linear silicate chains and that at high Ca:Si and H₂O ratios, the stable coordination number of aluminum is six. Specifically, we predict that silicate-bridging [AlO₂(OH)₄]^5- complexes are favored, stabilized by hydroxyl ligands and charge balancing calcium ions in the interlayer space. This structure is then confirmed experimentally by one- and two-dimensional dynamic nuclear polarization enhanced ²⁷Al and ²⁹Si solid-state NMR experiments. We notably assign a narrow ²⁷Al NMR signal at 5 ppm to the silicate-bridging [AlO₂(OH)₄]^5- sites and show that this signal correlates to ²⁹Si NMR signals from silicates in C-A-S-H, conflicting with its conventional assignment to a "third aluminate hydrate" (TAH) phase. We therefore conclude that TAH does not exist. This resolves a long-standing dilemma about the location and nature of the six-fold-coordinated aluminum observed by ²⁷Al NMR in C-A-S-H samples.

X-ray Diffraction, NMR Studies, and DFT Calculations of the Room and High Temperature Structures of Rubidium Cryolite, Rb3AlF6

A crystallographic approach incorporating multinuclear high field solid state NMR (SSNMR), X-ray structure determinations, TEM observation, and density functional theory (DFT) was used to characterize two polymorphs of rubidium cryolite, Rb₃AlF₆. The room temperature phase was found to be ordered and crystallizes in the Fddd (no. 70) space group with a = 37.26491(1) Å, b = 12.45405(4) Å, and c = 17.68341(6) Å. Comparison of NMR measurements and computational results revealed the dynamic rotations of the AlF₆ octahedra. Using in situ variable temperature MAS NMR measurements, the chemical exchange between rubidium sites was observed. The β-phase, i.e., high temperature polymorph, adopts the ideal cubic double-perovskite structure, space group Fm3m, with a = 8.9930(2) Å at 600 °C. Additionally, a series of polymorphs of K₃AlF₆ has been further characterized by high field high temperature SSNMR and DFT computation.

Structure and Catalytic Characterization of a Second Framework Al(IV) Site in Zeolite Catalysts Revealed by NMR at 35.2 T

Ultrahigh field ²⁷Al{¹H} 2D correlation NMR experiments demonstrate that at least two framework Al(IV) sites with hydroxyl groups can exist in acidic zeolite catalysts in their dehydrated and catalytically active states. In addition to the known Al(IV) at the framework bridging acid site (BAS), a new site created by a second tetrahedral Al atom and its hydroxyl group protons in zeolite HZSM-5 is clearly resolved at 35.2 T field strengths, enabled by recently developed series-connected hybrid (SCH) magnet technology. Coupled with computational modeling, extensive ²⁷Al MQMAS experiments at multiple field strengths, and ¹H MAS NMR experiments, these data indicate that this second tetrahedrally coordinated Al site (denoted Al(IV)-2) experiences an increased chemical shift and unique quadrupolar parameters relative to the BAS in both dehydrated and hydrated states. These new experimental data, supported by computational and catalytic reaction work, indicate that the second site arises from partially bonded framework (SiO)_4-n-Al(OH)_n species that significantly increase catalyst reactivity in benzene hydride-transfer and n-hexane cracking reactions. Al(IV)-2 sites result either from framework crystallization defects or from incomplete postsynthetic hydrolysis of a framework Al, prior to the formation of extraframework Al. Populations of this second acidic proton site created by the Al(IV)-2 species are shown to be controlled via postsynthetic catalyst treatments, should be general to different catalyst structures, and significantly enhance catalyst reactivity in the cited probe reactions when they are present. The results herein communicate the highest magnetic field strength data on active zeolite catalyst structures to date and enable for the first time the detection of Al and H association on a dry HZSM-5 catalyst, i.e., under conditions representative of typical end-use processes.

B-MWW Zeolite: The Case Against Single-Site Catalysis

Boron-containing materials have recently been identified as highly selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of alkanes to olefins. It has previously been demonstrated by several spectroscopic characterization techniques that the surface of these boron-containing ODH catalysts oxidize and hydrolyze under reaction conditions, forming an amorphous B₂ (OH)_x O_(3-x/2) (x=0-6) layer. Yet, the precise nature of the active site(s) remains elusive. In this Communication, we provide a detailed characterization of zeolite MCM-22 isomorphously substituted with boron (B-MWW). Using ¹¹ B solid-state NMR spectroscopy, we show that the majority of boron species in B-MWW exist as isolated BO₃ units, fully incorporated into the zeolite framework. However, this material shows no catalytic activity for ODH of propane to propene. The catalytic inactivity of B-MWW for ODH of propane falsifies the hypothesis that site-isolated BO₃ units are the active site in boron-based catalysts. This observation is at odds with other traditionally studied catalysts like vanadium-based catalysts and provides an important piece of the mechanistic puzzle.

Suppressing 1H Spin Diffusion in Fast MAS Proton Detected Heteronuclear Correlation Solid-State NMR Experiments

Fast magic angle spinning (MAS) and indirect detection by high gyromagnetic ratio (γ) nuclei such as proton or fluorine are increasingly utilized to obtain 2D heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) solid-state NMR spectra of spin-1/2 nuclei by using cross polarization (CP) for coherence transfer. However, one major drawback of CP HETCOR pulse sequences is that ¹H spin diffusion during the back X→¹H CP transfer step may result in relayed correlations. This problem is particularly pronounced for the indirect detection of very low-γ nuclei such as ⁸⁹Y, ¹⁰³Rh, ¹⁰⁹Ag and ¹⁸³W where long contact times on the order of 10-30 ms are necessary for optimal CP transfer. Here we propose two methods that eliminate relayed correlations and allow more reliable distance information to be obtained from 2D HETCOR NMR spectra. The first method uses Lee-Goldburg (LG) CP during the X→¹H back-transfer step to suppress ¹H spin diffusion. We determine LG conditions compatible with fast MAS frequencies (ν_rot) of 40-95 kHz and show that ¹H spin diffusion can be efficiently suppressed at low effective radiofrequency (RF) fields (ν_1,eff ≪ 0.5ν_rot) and also at high effective RF fields (ν_1,eff ≫ 2ν_rot). We describe modified Hartmann-Hahn LG-CP match conditions compatible with fast MAS and suitable for indirect detection of moderate-γ nuclei such as ¹³C, and low-γ nuclei such as ⁸⁹Y. The second method uses D-RINEPT (dipolar refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer) during the X→¹H back-transfer step of the HETCOR pulse sequence. The effectiveness of these methods for acquiring HETCOR spectra with reduced relayed signal intensities is demonstrated with ¹H{¹³C} HETCOR NMR experiments on l-histidine⋅HCl⋅H₂O and ¹H{⁸⁹Y} HETCOR NMR experiments on an organometallic yttrium complex.

Understanding the Synthesis of Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts Using Chemical Grafting

The complexity of variables during incipient wetness impregnation synthesis of supported metal oxides precludes an in-depth understanding of the chemical reactions governing the formation of the dispersed oxide sites. This contribution describes the use of vapor phase deposition chemistry (also known as grafting) as a tool to systematically investigate the influence of isopropanol solvent on VO(Oⁱ Pr)₃ anchoring during synthesis of vanadium oxide on silica. The availability of anchoring sites on silica was found to depend not only on the pretreatment of the silica but also on the solvent present. H-bond donors can reduce the reactivity of isolated silanols whereas disruption of silanol nests by H-bond acceptors can turn unreactive H-bonded silanols into reactive anchoring sites. The model suggested here can inform improved syntheses with increased dispersion of metal oxides on silica.

Proton-Detected Multidimensional Solid-State NMR Enables Precise Characterization of Vanadium Surface Species at Natural Abundance

Heterogeneous catalysts fulfill vital roles in industrial processes; however, the nature of the catalytic surfaces, typically either containing a low abundance of active sites or being amorphous in nature, leads to difficulties when attempting to study the structure of the active sites. In this work, we show how making use of fast MAS ssNMR allows one to efficiently detect well-resolved ¹H-detected spectra of heterogeneous catalysts. This approach was applied to study the structure of surface species resulting from the grafting of VO(OⁱPr)₃ onto a partially dehydroxylated silica using the surface organometallic chemistry approach. The use of ¹H sensitivity enabled detection of various hetero- and homonuclear correlation spectra in order to study the structure of this system and to resolve the structure of the grafted vanadium complex. More specifically, VO(OⁱPr)₃ grafts through both protonolysis and opening of siloxane bridges to generate a bis-grafted species.

New insights on the supramolecular structure of highly porous core-shell drug nanocarriers using solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Nano-sized metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs), with engineered surfaces to enhance the targeting of the drug delivery, have proven efficient as drug nanocarriers. To improve their performances a step further, it is essential to understand at the molecular level the interactions between the nanoMOF interfaces and both the surface covering groups and the drug loaded inside the micropores. Here we show how solid-state NMR spectroscopy allows us to address these issues in an aluminum-based nanoMOF coated and loaded with phosphorus-containing species.

17O NMR studies of organic and biological molecules in aqueous solution and in the solid state

This review describes the latest developments in the field of ¹⁷O NMR spectroscopy of organic and biological molecules both in aqueous solution and in the solid state. In the first part of the review, a general theoretical description of the nuclear quadrupole relaxation process in isotropic liquids is presented at a mathematical level suitable for non-specialists. In addition to the first-order quadrupole interaction, the theory also includes additional relaxation mechanisms such as the second-order quadrupole interaction and its cross correlation with shielding anisotropy. This complete theoretical treatment allows one to assess the transverse relaxation rate (thus the line width) of NMR signals from half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in solution over the entire range of motion. On the basis of this theoretical framework, we discuss general features of quadrupole-central-transition (QCT) NMR, which is a particularly powerful method of studying biomolecules in the slow motion regime. Then we review recent advances in ¹⁷O QCT NMR studies of biological macromolecules in aqueous solution. The second part of the review is concerned with solid-state ¹⁷O NMR studies of organic and biological molecules. As a sequel to the previous review on the same subject [G. Wu, Prog. Nucl. Magn. Reson. Spectrosc. 52 (2008) 118-169], the current review provides a complete coverage of the literature published since 2008 in this area.

Controlled grafting of dialkylphosphonate-based ionic liquids on γ-alumina: design of hybrid materials with high potential for CO2 separation applications

In this work we provide a detailed study on grafting reactions of various dialkylphosphonate-based ILs. Special attention has been devoted to a comprehensive investigation on how the nature of the anion and the organic spacer composition (hydrophilic or hydrophobic groups) could impact the grafting densities and bonding modes of phosphonate-based ILs anchored to γ-alumina (γ-Al₂O₃) powders. For the first time, the bonding of phosphonate-based ILs with only surface hexacoordinated aluminum nuclei was established using both solid-state ³¹P–²⁷Al D-HMQC and ³¹P NMR experiments. It has been demonstrated that the grafting of dialkylphosphonate-based ILs is competing with a hydrolysis and/or precipitation process which could be attractively hindered by changing the anion nature: bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonylimide anion instead of bromide. In additon, independently of the chosen spacer, similar reaction conditions led to equivalent grafting densities with different bonding mode configurations. The CO₂ physisorption analysis on both pure ILs and grafted ILs on alumina powders confirmed that the initial sorption properties of ILs do not change upon grafting, thus confirming the attractive potential of as-grafted ILs for the preparation of hybrid materials in a form of selective adsorbers or membranes for CO₂ separation applications.

Grafting of diethylphophonate-based ILs onto γ-Al₂O₃ powder in solvothermal condition was achieved on mesoporous γ-alumina powder and membrane (A = organic spacer).

1H-Detected quadrupolar spin-lattice relaxation measurements under magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR

Proton detection and phase-modulated pulse saturation enable the measurement of spin-lattice relaxation times of "invisible" quadrupolar nuclei with extensively large quadrupolar couplings. For nitrogen-14, efficient cross-polarization is obtained with a long-duration preparation pulse. The experiment paves the way to the characterization of a large variety of materials containing halogens, metals and more.

Enhanced 1H-X D-HMQC performance through improved 1H homonuclear decoupling

The sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments that utilize ¹H zero-quantum heteronuclear dipolar recoupling, such as D-HMQC, is compromised by poor homonuclear decoupling. This leads to a rapid decay of recoupled magnetization and an inefficient recoupling of long-range dipolar interactions, especially for nuclides with low gyromagnetic ratios. We investigated the use, in symmetry-based ¹H heteronuclear recoupling sequences, of a basic R element that was principally designed for efficient homonuclear decoupling. By shortening the time required to suppress the effects of homonuclear dipolar interactions to the duration of a single inversion pulse, spin diffusion was effectively quenched and long-lived recoupled coherence lifetimes could be obtained. We show, both theoretically and experimentally, that these modified sequences can yield considerable sensitivity improvements over the current state-of-the-art methods and applied them to the indirect detection of ⁸⁹Y in a metal-organic framework.

Magnetization transfer from protons to quadrupolar nuclei in solid-state NMR using PRESTO or dipolar-mediated refocused INEPT methods

In solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the through-space transfer of magnetization from protons to quadrupolar nuclei is employed to probe proximities between those isotopes. Furthermore, such transfer, in conjunction with Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP), can enhance the NMR sensitivity of quadrupolar nuclei, as it allows the transfer of DNP-enhanced ¹H polarization to surrounding nuclei. We compare here the performances of two approaches to achieve such transfer: PRESTO (Phase-shifted Recoupling Effects a Smooth Transfer of Order), which is currently the method of choice to achieve the magnetization transfer from protons to quadrupolar nuclei and which has been shown to supersede Cross-Polarization under Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS) for quadrupolar nuclei and D-RINEPT (Dipolar-mediated Refocused Insensitive Nuclei Enhanced by Polarization Transfer) using symmetry-based SR4₁² recoupling, which has already been employed to transfer the magnetization in the reverse way from half-integer quadrupolar spin to protons. We also test the PRESTO sequence with R16₇⁶ recoupling using 270₀90₁₈₀ composite π-pulses as inversion elements. This recoupling scheme, which has previously been proposed to reintroduce ¹H Chemical Shift Anisotropy (CSA) at high MAS frequencies with high robustness to rf-field inhomogeneity, has not so far been employed to reintroduce dipolar couplings with protons. These various techniques to transfer magnetization from protons to quadrupolar nuclei are analyzed using (i) an average Hamiltonian theory, (ii) numerical simulations of spin dynamics, and (iii) experimental ¹H → ²⁷Al and ¹H → ¹⁷O transfers in as-synthesized AlPO₄-14 and ¹⁷O-labelled fumed silica, respectively. The experiments and simulations are done at two magnetic fields (9.4 and 18.8 T) and several spinning speeds (15, 18-24 and 60 kHz). This analysis indicates that owing to its γ-encoded character, PRESTO yields the highest transfer efficiency at low magnetic fields and MAS frequencies, whereas owing to its higher robustness to rf-field inhomogeneity and chemical shifts, D-RINEPT is more sensitive at high fields and MAS frequencies, notably for protons exhibiting large offset or CSA, such as those involved in hydrogen bonds.

A Novel Class of Injectable Bioceramics that Glue Tissues and Biomaterials

Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are clinically effective void fillers that are capable of bridging calcified tissue defects and facilitating regeneration. However, CPCs are completely synthetic/inorganic, unlike the calcium phosphate that is found in calcified tissues, and they lack an architectural organization, controlled assembly mechanisms, and have moderate biomechanical strength, which limits their clinical effectiveness. Herein, we describe a new class of bioinspired CPCs that can glue tissues together and bond tissues to metallic and polymeric biomaterials. Surprisingly, alpha tricalcium phosphate cements that are modified with simple phosphorylated amino acid monomers of phosphoserine (PM-CPCs) bond tissues up to 40-fold stronger (2.5–4 MPa) than commercial cyanoacrylates (0.1 MPa), and 100-fold stronger than surgical fibrin glue (0.04 MPa), when cured in wet-field conditions. In addition to adhesion, phosphoserine creates other novel properties in bioceramics, including a nanoscale organic/inorganic composite microstructure, and templating of nanoscale amorphous calcium phosphate nucleation. PM-CPCs are made of the biocompatible precursors calcium, phosphate, and amino acid, and these represent the first amorphous nano-ceramic composites that are stable in liquids.

Oxo- and Oxofluoroaluminates in the RbF-Al2O3 System: Synthesis and Structural Characterization

Precise research on the RbF-Al₂O₃ system was carried out by means of combining X-ray powder diffraction, high-field solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis methods. α-Rb₃AlF₆, RbAlO₂, Rb₂Al₂₂O₃₄, and new phase, Rb₂Al₂O₃F₂, were identified in the system. The structure of this new rubidium oxofluoroaluminate was determined. It is built up from single layers of oxygen-connected AlO₃F tetrahedra, those layers beeing separated by fluorine atoms. This type of structure exhibits a decent ionic conductivity at ambient temperature, 1.74 × 10^-6 S cm^-1. The similar structural arrangement of O₃Al-O-AlO₃ and FO₂Al-O-AlO₂F tetrahedra of the conduction planes in Rb₂Al₂₂O₃₄ and Rb₂Al₂O₃F₂ were confirmed by ²⁷Al NMR measurements. A thermal analysis of the RbF-Al₂O₃ system revealed that it can be defined as a pseudobinary subsystem of the more general quaternary RbF-AlF₃-Al₂O₃-Rb₂O phase diagram. From a phase analysis of individual phase fields, the mutual metastable behavior of all founded phases can be considered. It was observed that fluoro- and oxoaluminates exist together. Rb₂Al₂O₃F₂ is more stable under high temperature. Rubidium fluoro- and oxoaluminates are metastable precursors of the thermodynamically more stable structure of rubidium oxofluoroaluminate.

Observation of proximities between spin-1/2 and quadrupolar nuclei in solids: Improved robustness to chemical shielding using adiabatic symmetry-based recoupling

We introduce a novel heteronuclear dipolar recoupling based on the R2₁^-1 symmetry, which uses the tanh/tan (tt) shaped pulse as a basic inversion element and is denoted R2₁^-1(tt). Using first-order average Hamiltonian theory, we show that this sequence is non-γ-encoded and that it reintroduces the |m| = 1 spatial component of the Chemical Shift Anisotropy (CSA) of the irradiated isotope and its heteronuclear dipolar interactions. Using numerical simulations and one-dimensional (1D) ²⁷Al-{³¹P} through-space D-HMQC (Dipolar Heteronuclear Multiple-Quantum Correlation) experiments on VPI-5, we compare the performances of this recoupling to those of other non-γ-encoded |m| = 1 heteronuclear recoupling schemes: REDOR (Rotational-Echo DOuble Resonance), SFAM (Simultaneous Frequency and Amplitude Modulation) and R4₂^-1(tt). Such comparison indicates that the R2₁^-1(tt) scheme is more robust to CSA, offset and radiofrequency field inhomogeneities than the other schemes. We take advantage of the high robustness of R2₁^-1(tt) to CSA and offset to demonstrate the possibility to correlate the signals of ²⁰⁷Pb isotope with those of neighboring half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei. Such approach is demonstrated experimentally by acquiring ¹¹B-{²⁰⁷Pb} D-HMQC 2D spectra of Pb₄O(BO₃)₂ crystalline powder.

Indirect detection of 10B (I = 3) overtone NMR at very fast magic angle spinning

The application of overtone nuclear magnetic resonance (OT NMR) to symmetric spin transitions of integer quadrupolar nuclei is of considerable interest since this transition is immune to the first-order quadrupolar interaction, thus resulting in narrow NMR lines. Owing to its roles in nature and its high natural abundance, ¹⁴N (I = 1) OT NMR has been explored, in which the indirect and/or direct acquisitions of ¹⁴N OT were experimentally demonstrated. However, other than ¹⁴N nucleus, no OT NMR observation of other integer quadrupolar nuclei has been reported in the literature. In this work, we extend the application of OT NMR to another integer quadrupolar nucleus, namely ¹⁰B (I = 3). However, this is not straightforward owing to the unfavorable characteristics of ¹⁰B isotope. Here, for the first time, we present the selective acquisition of ¹⁰B central (-1 ↔ +1) OT NMR via detection of ¹H nuclei on perborate monohydrate sample. Numerical calculations are in a good agreement with the experimental results. Both show that the optimal sensitivity is achieved when the carrier frequency is applied at the second OT spinning sideband, i.e. an offset of twice of the spinning frequency from the center band.

Recording 13C-15N HMQC 2D sparse spectra in solids in 30 s

We propose a dipolar HMQC Hadamard-encoded (D-HMQC-H_n) experiment for fast 2D correlations of abundant nuclei in solids. The main limitation of the Hadamard methods resides in the length of the encoding pulses, which results from a compromise between the selectivity and the sensitivity due to losses. For this reason, these methods should mainly be used with sparse spectra, and they profit from the increased separation of the resonances at high magnetic fields. In the case of the D-HMQC-H_n experiments, we give a simple rule that allows directly setting the optimum length of the selective pulses, versus the minimum separation of the resonances in the indirect dimension. The demonstration has been performed on a fully ¹³C,¹⁵N labelled f-MLF sample, and it allowed recording the build-up curves of the ¹³C-¹⁵N cross-peaks within 10 min. However, the method could also be used in the case of less sensitive samples, but with more accumulations.

Sensitivity enhanced (14)N/(14)N correlations to probe inter-beta-sheet interactions using fast magic angle spinning solid-state NMR in biological solids

(14)N/(14)N correlations are vital for structural studies of solid samples, especially those in which (15)N isotopic enrichment is challenging, time-consuming and expensive. Although (14)N nuclei have high isotopic abundance (99.6%), there are inherent difficulties in observing (14)N/(14)N correlations due to limited resolution and sensitivity related to: (i) low (14)N gyromagnetic ratio (γ), (ii) large (14)N quadrupolar couplings, (iii) integer (14)N spin quantum number (I = 1), and (iv) very weak (14)N-(14)N dipolar couplings. Previously, we demonstrated a proton-detected 3D (14)N/(14)N/(1)H correlation experiment at fast magic angle spinning (MAS) on l-histidine·HCl·H2O utilizing a through-bond (J) and residual dipolar-splitting (RDS) based heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (J-HMQC) sequence mediated through (1)H/(1)H radio-frequency driven recoupling (RFDR). As an extension of our previous work, in this study we show the utility of dipolar-based HMQC (D-HMQC) in combination with (1)H/(1)H RFDR mixing to obtain sensitivity enhanced (14)N/(14)N correlations in more complex biological solids such as a glycyl-l-alanine (Gly-l-Ala) dipeptide, and parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) β-strand alanine tripeptides (P-(Ala)3 and AP-(Ala)3, respectively). These systems highlight the mandatory necessity of 3D (14)N/(14)N/(1)H measurements to get (14)N/(14)N correlations when the amide proton resonances are overlapped. Moreover, the application of long selective (14)N pulses, instead of short hard ones, is shown to improve the sensitivity. Globally, we demonstrate that replacing J-scalar with dipolar interaction and hard- with selective-(14)N pulses allows gaining a factor of ca. 360 in experimental time. On the basis of intermolecular NH/NH distances and (14)N quadrupolar tensor orientations, (14)N/(14)N correlations are effectively utilized to make a clear distinction between the parallel and antiparallel arrangements of the β-strands in (Ala)3 through the observation of inter-β-sheet correlations.

ZSM-5 Zeolite: Complete Al Bond Connectivity and Implications on Structure Formation from Solid-State NMR and Quantum Chemistry Calculations

Al site distribution in the structurally complex and industrially important ZSM-5 zeolite is determined by studying the spectroscopic response of Al(OSi)₄ units and using a self-consistent combination of up-to-date solid-state NMR correlations (²⁹Si-²⁷Al and ¹H-²⁷Al D-HMQC) and quantum chemistry methods (DFT-D). To unravel the driving forces behind specific Al sitting positions, our approach focuses on ZSM-5 containing its more efficient OSDA, tetrapropylammonium.

17O MAS NMR Correlation Spectroscopy at High Magnetic Fields

The structure of two protected amino acids, FMOC-l-leucine and FMOC-l-valine, and a dipeptide, N-acetyl-l-valyl-l-leucine (N-Ac-VL), were studied via one- and two-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Utilizing ¹⁷O magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR at multiple magnetic fields (17.6-35.2 T/750-1500 MHz for ¹H) the ¹⁷O quadrupolar and chemical shift parameters were determined for the two oxygen sites of each FMOC-protected amino acids and the three distinct oxygen environments of the dipeptide. The one- and two-dimensional, ¹⁷O, ¹⁵N-¹⁷O, ¹³C-¹⁷O, and ¹H-¹⁷O double-resonance correlation experiments performed on the uniformly ¹³C,¹⁵N and 70% ¹⁷O-labeled dipeptide prove the attainability of ¹⁷O as a probe for structure studies of biological systems. ¹⁵N-¹⁷O and ¹³C-¹⁷O distances were measured via one-dimensional REAPDOR and ZF-TEDOR experimental buildup curves and determined to be within 15% of previously reported distances, thus demonstrating the use of ¹⁷O NMR to quantitate interatomic distances in a fully labeled dipeptide. Through-space hydrogen bonding of N-Ac-VL was investigated by a two-dimensional ¹H-detected ¹⁷O R³-R-INEPT experiment, furthering the importance of ¹⁷O for studies of structure in biomolecular solids.

(Oxo)(Fluoro)-Aluminates in KF-Al2O3 System: Thermal Stability and Structural Correlation

Precise investigation of part of the phase diagram of KF-Al₂O₃ system was performed in an experiment combining different techniques. Solidified mixtures of KF-Al₂O₃ were studied by X-ray powder diffraction and high-field solid-state NMR spectroscopy over a wide range of compositions. To help with the interpretation of the NMR spectra of the solidified samples found as complex admixtures, we synthesized the following pure compounds: KAlO₂, K₂Al₂₂O₃₄, α-K₃AlF₆, KAlF₄, and K₂Al₂O₃F₂. These compounds were then characterized using various solid-state NMR techniques, including MQ-MAS and D-HMQC. NMR parameters of the pure compounds were finally determined using first-principles density functional theory calculations. The phase diagram of KF-Al₂O₃ with the alumina content up to 30 mol % was determined by means of thermal analysis. Thermal analysis was also used for the description of the thermal stability of one synthesized compound, K₂Al₂O₃F₂.
