Abstract
Photocatalysis is considered as an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy, since it uses abundant light for the advancement of the reaction, which is freely accessible and is devoid of environmental pollution. During the last decades, (nano)photocatalysts have gained broad industrial applications in terms of purification and detoxification of water as well as production of green fuels and hydrogen gas due to their special attributes. The degradation or remediation of toxic and hazardous compounds from the environment or changing them into non-toxic entities is a significant endeavor and necessary for the safety of humans, animals, and the environment. Black phosphorus (BP), a two-dimensional single-element material, has a marvelous structure, tunable bandgap, changeable morphology from bulk to nanosheet/quantum dot, and unique physicochemical properties, which makes it attractive material for photocatalytic applications, especially for sustainable development purposes. Since it can serve as a photocatalyst with or without coupling with other semiconductors, various aspects for multidimensional exploitation of BP are deliberated including their preparation via solvothermal, ball milling, calcination, and sonication methods to obtain BP from red phosphorus. The techniques for improving the photocatalytic and stability of BP-based composites are discussed along with their multifaceted applications for environmental remediation, pollution degradation, water splitting, N2 fixation, CO2 reduction, bacterial disinfection, H2 generation, and photodynamic therapy. Herein, most recent advancements pertaining to the photocatalytic applications of BP-based photocatalyst are cogitated, with a focus on their synthesis and properties as well as crucial challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract
Despite S-doped C3N4 can exhibit more efficient photo-reactivity than pure C3N4, there is still some space to further improve the detaching efficiency of electron-hole and enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of S-C3N4. The construction of heterojunction is an effective method to promote the photocatalytic efficiency. ZnIn2S4, as a novel photocatalyst, its VB (1.37 V) and CB (- 1.09 V) can match with S-C3N4. Therefore, we hope to construct the ZnIn2S4/S-C3N4 heterojunction for boosting the photocatalytic activity of S-C3N4. In this paper, ZnIn2S4/S-C3N4 heterojunction was prepared through hydrothermal method using S-C3N4, ZnCl2, InCl3·4H2O, and thioacetamide as raw materials and heated at 160 °C for 16 h. The optimum 18% ZnIn2S4/S-C3N4 nanocomposites exhibit dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance for degradation of tetracycline with 86.3% removal rate within 120 min, higher than 50% degradation efficiency of pure S-C3N4. And in the process of photodegradation for tetracycline, the largest contribution rate is the photo-excited cavity (h+), followed by ·O2- and ·OH. Herein, we have provided a good example for removing antibiotic residues by using S-C3N4-based heterojunction towards environmental remediation.

Abstract
In the past several decades, significant efforts have been paid toward photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in environmental research. During the past years, titanium dioxide nano-architectures (TiO2 NAs) have been widely used in water purification applications with photocatalytic degradation processes under Uv/Vis light illumination. Photocatalysis process with nano-architectural design of TiO2 is viewed as an efficient procedure for directly channeling solar energy into water treatment reactions. The considerable band-gap values and the subsequent short life time of photo-generated charge carriers are showed among the limitations of this approach. One of these effective efforts is the using of oxidation processes with advance semiconductor photocatalyst NAs for degradation the organic pollutants under UV/Vis irradiation. Among them, nano-architectural design of TiO2 photocatalyst (such as Janus, yolk-shell (Y@S), hollow microspheres (HMSs) and nano-belt) is an effective way to improve oxidation processes for increasing photocatalytic activity in water treatment applications. In the light of the above issues, this study tends to provide a critical overview of the used strategies for preparing TiO2 photocatalysts with desirable physicochemical properties like enhanced absorption of light, low density, high surface area, photo-stability, and charge-carrier behavior. Among the various nanoarchitectural design of TiO2, the Y@S and HMSs have created a great appeal given their considerable large surface area, low density, homogeneous catalytic environment, favorable light harvesting properties, and enhanced molecular diffusion kinetics of the particles. In this review was summarized the developments that have been made for nano-architectural design of TiO2 photocatalyst. Additional focus is placed on the realization of interfacial charge and the possibility of achieving charge carriers separation for these NAs as electron migration is the extremely important factor for increasing the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract
The further development of an efficient and sustainable water treatment requires the development of a very active and controllable photocatalyst. The heterojunction is a promising site where the activity of such a photocatalyst can be enhanced. Organic dyes have become a severe concern in recent years owing to their significant presence in wastewater. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr (VI)) is a potential carcinogen also exhibiting great persistence in wastewater. So, a low-waste, high-performance materials is required to eliminate organic dyes and Cr (VI) from wastewater. In this study, CNO/g-CN (CuNb2O6/g-C3N4) photocatalyst synthesized via co-precipitation, followed by calcination which were characterized using physiochemical and photo-electrochemical approaches to identify their structural, photochemical and optical traits. The uniqueness of the synthesized photocatalyst is due to both its efficient photo-reduction of Cr (VI) and photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene Blue (MB) and Methyl Orange (MO) under visible light. The CNO/g-CN composite with 30% CNO heterojunctions exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity with Cr (VI) 92.80% photoreduction and efficiency degradation for RhB, MB, MO of 99.6%, 98.50%, 99.0%, respectively, with constant rate (k). This efficient photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lower recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. Free radical trapping experiments showed that •O2- and h+ play an important role in the photodegradation. The study, therefore, opens an alternative route in the synthesis of very efficient binary photocatalysts for application in environmental remediation.

Abstract
In this work, Co3O4/g-C3N4 catalyst with highly efficient adsorption and degradation of antibiotics was developed based on the combination of three-dimensional (3D) porous morphological controls of g-C3N4 and the loading of Co3O4 quantum dots (Co3O4 QDs). It was discovered that the catalyst can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through a non-photochemical path, and a high tetracycline elimination rate of 99.7% can be achieved within 18 min. The characterization and density functional theory calculation results demonstrated that the porous 3D structure can not only promote the substrate adsorption reaction but also provide large surface area and countless exposed active sites for catalytic reaction. The introduction of Co3O4 QDs lowered activation energy barrier and lead to high energy of PMS adsorption. More efficient charge migration between the catalyst and PMS further accelerated PMS activation. Thus, leading to the excellent catalytic performance. In addition, non-free radical mediated degradation mechanism of catalytic activity was also proposed. This work provides a scheme for designing novel and efficient PMS activators for the removal of abusive antibiotics from aqueous environments.

Abstract
Designing an advance nanostructure semiconductor is an efficient strategy to promote the charge separation and thus improve the photocatalytic activity. Herein, a relatively high recombination rate of electron-hole pairs and low specific surface area of g-C3N4 (GCN) were subjected to the surface deposition of the core shell nanoparticles composed of nitrogen doped hollow carbon spheres (N-HCSs) as the supporting scaffold and TiO2 nanoparticles as the photoactive layer. The ternary composites with different TiO2@N-HCS content were prepared through a simplified nanocasting method followed by the two consecutive hydrothermal process. The effects of nitrogen doping in carbon framework, and nanoparticles amount were evaluated on the photocatalytic ability through the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) molecules under the visible light irradiation. At the optimum content of core shell nanoparticles (7 wt%), the solar-driven TC photocatalytic degradation for ternary composite was approximately 85%, which was much better (about three times) than that of the pure GCN. More interestingly, the experimental results revealed that doping of nitrogen atoms has a positive role on the charge separation and the resulting photocatalytic efficiency. The employed hollow carbon spheres here play three important roles: (1) providing a substrate to uniformly dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles without any aggregation; (2) reducing the combination of charge carriers and improving the separation of photoinduced carriers; (3) formation of larger surface area and more active sites on the photocatalyst surface. Furthermore, the underlying photocatalytic degradation mechanism was introduced by the controlled experiments using photoluminescent and radical scavenger tests.

Abstract
Dye-containing pollutants are currently a threat to the environment, and it is highly challenging to eliminate these dyes photocatalytically under visible light. Herein, we designed and prepared a ZnO/CuO/g-C3N4 (ZCG) heterostructure nanocomposite by a co-crystallization procedure and applied it to eliminate pollutants from wastewater via a photocatalytic scheme. The structural and morphological features of the composite confirmed the formation of a ZCG nanocomposite. The photocatalytic capability of the ZCG photocatalyst was investigated via the decomposition of methylene blue dye. The outstanding activity level of 97.46% was reached within 50 min. In addition, the proficiency of the ZCG composite was 753%, 392%, 156%, and 130% higher than photolysis, g-C3N4, CuO, and ZnO, respectively. Furthermore, the photodeterioration activity on Congo red was also evaluated and found to be excellent. The enhanced catalytic achievement is attributed to the construction of heterojunctions among the constituent compounds. These properties boost the charge transfer and decrease the recombination rate. Moreover, the reusability of the ZCG product was explored and a negligible photoactivity decline was detected after six successful runs. The outcomes suggest the as-prepared nanocomposite can be applied to remove pollutants, which opens a new door to practical implementation.

Abstract
Heterogeneous photocatalysis premised on advanced oxidation processes has witnessed a broad application perspective, including water purification and environmental remediation. In particular, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), an earth-abundant metal-free conjugated polymer, has acquired extensive application scope and interdisciplinary consideration owing to its outstanding structural and physicochemical properties. However, several issues such as the high recombination rate of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs, smaller specific surface area, and lower electrical conductivity curtail the catalytic efficacy of bulk g-C3N4. Another challenging task is separating the catalyst from the reaction medium, limiting their reusability and practical applications. Therefore, several methodologies are adopted strategically to tackle these issues. Attention is being paid, especially to the magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) based catalysts to enhance efficiency and proficient reusability property. This review summarizes the latest progress related to the design and development of magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs and their utilization in photocatalytic systems. The usefulness of the semiconductor heterojunctions on the catalytic activity, working mechanism, and degradation of pollutants are discussed in detail. The major challenges and prospects of using magnetic g-C3N4-based NCs for photocatalytic applications are highlighted in this report.

Abstract
To promote the low photocatalytic efficiency caused by the recombination of electron/hole pairs and widen the photo-response wavelength window, ZnFe2O4@ZnO-N/B/RGO and ZnFe2O4@ZnO-C3N4 ternary heterojunction nanophotocatalysts were designed and successfully prepared through a sol-gel technique. In comparison to bare ZnFe2O4 and ZnO, the ZnFe2O4-ZnO@N/B/RGO and ZnFe2O4@ZnO-C3N4 ternary products showed highly improved photocatalytic properties in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under ultra-violet (UV) and visible light irradiation. Various physicochemical properties of the photocatalysts were evaluated through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. The observations indicated that the ternary heterojuncted ZnFe2O4@ZnO-N/B/RGO absorbs lower energy visible light wavelengths, which is an enhancement in the photocatalytic properties of ZnFe2O4@ZnO loaded on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanosheets and graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4). This gives the catalyst photo-Fenton degradation properties.

Abstract
As a metal-free photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted tremendous attention. Preparation of porous few-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets has been proven to be an effective strategy to obtain high photocatalytic performance. At present, most methods are expensive, time-consuming or complicated. Here, a low-cost, facile and environment-friendly one-step synthesis method of porous few-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets is designed by introducing water in the precursor. Straightforward calcination of the precursor, which decomposes to form ammonia, can produce g-C3N4 nanosheets with the assistance of water. Under the visible light (>400 nm), the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of the so-obtained nanosheets is 3214 μmol · g-1 · h-1, which is 17.3 times of the original bulk g-C3N4. The apparent quantum yield is 27% under the 380 nm monochromatic light irradiation.

Abstract
A novel magnetic catalyst, (SGCN/Fe3O4/PVIs/Pd) was synthesized by growing of poly(1-vinylimidazole) on the surface of ionic liquid decorated magnetic S-doped graphitic carbon nitride, followed by stabilization of palladium nanoparticles. Catalytic activity of the prepared heterogeneous catalyst was explored for the catalytic reduction of hazardous dyes, methyl orange and Rhodamine B, in the presence of NaBH4. Besides, the effects of the reaction variables on the catalytic activity were investigated in detail. The kinetics study established that dye reduction was the first order reaction and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 72.63 kJ/mol and 68.35 kJ/mol1 for methyl orange and Rhodamine B dyes, respectively. Moreover, ΔS# and ΔH# values for methyl orange were found to be − 33.67 J/mol K and 68.39 kJ/mol respectively. These values for Rhodamine B were − 45.62 J/mol K and 65.92 kJ/mol. The recycling test verified that the catalyst possessed good stability and reusability, thereby making it a good candidate for the catalytic purposes. Furthermore, a possible catalytic mechanism for dye catalytic reduction over SGCN/Fe3O4/PVIs/Pd was proposed.

Abstract
A series of phosphorus containing ZnO (P-ZnO) photocatalysts with various percentages of phosphorus were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The structural, physical and optical properties of the obtained microparticles were investigated using diverse techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis. The photocatalytic activities of the pure and P-ZnO samples were evaluated for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The parameters such as pH, catalyst dosage, contaminant concentration and effect of persulfate as an oxidant were studied. It was found that the P-ZnO1.8% photocatalyst could destroy 99% of RhB (5 ppm) in 180 min at pH = 7; furthermore, it degraded ∼100% of 5 and 10 ppm of the RhB pollutant in 120 and 180 min, respectively, only by adding 0.01 g of persulfate into the reaction solution. To determine the photocatalytic mechanism, 2-propanol, benzoquinone and EDTA were used and it was indicated that hydroxyl radicals, superoxide ions and holes, all had major roles in the photocatalytic degradation but the hydroxyl radical effect was the most significant. The phenol degradation was also investigated using the P-ZnO1.8% optimum photocatalyst which could destroy 53% of the phenol (5 ppm) in 180 min. According to the reusability test, it was proved that after 5 cycles, the catalyst activity was not highly changed and it was potentially capable of pollutant degradation.

Abstract
It is of vital importance to construct highly interconnected, macroporous photocatalyst to improve its efficiency and applicability in solar energy conversion and environment remediation. Graphitic-like C3N4 (g-C3N4), as an analogy to two-dimensional (2D) graphene, is highly identified as a visible-light-responsive polymeric semiconductor. Moreover, the feasibility of g-C3N4 in making porous structures has been well established. However, the preparation of macroporous g-C3N4 with abundant porous networks and exposure surface, still constitutes a difficulty. To solve it, we report a first facile preparation of bimodal macroporous g-C3N4 hybrids with abundant in-plane holes, which is simply enabled by in-situ modification through thermally treating the mixture of thiourea and SnCl4 (pore modifier) after rotary evaporation. For one hand, the formed in-plane macropores endow the g-C3N4 system with plentiful active sites and short, cross-plane diffusion channels that can greatly speed up mass transport and transfer. For another, the heterojunctions founded between g-C3N4 and SnO2 consolidate the electron transfer reaction to greatly reduce the recombination probability. As a consequence, the resulted macroporous g-C3N4/SnO2 nanohybrid had a high specific surface area (SSA) of 44.3 m2/g that was quite comparable to most nano/mesoporous g-C3N4 reported. The interconnected porous network also rendered a highly intensified light absorption by strengthening the light penetration. Together with the improved mass transport and electron transfer, the macroporous g-C3N4/SnO2 hybrid exhibited about 2.4-fold increment in the photoactivity compared with pure g-C3N4. Additionally, the recyclability of such hybrid could be guaranteed after eight successive uses.
