On the Design of an Efficient Inductive Wireless Power Transfer for Passive Neurostimulation Systems

In this paper, a minimally invasive wireless powered electronic lens (e-lens) with passive electrodes is presented for an ocular electrical stimulation. Previous research has focused on the differentiation property of the induction phenomenon and half wave rectifiers. However, these approaches are generally application specific, non efficient, suitable for low current, and deliver monophasic current stimulation. Existing rectifier-based techniques can lead to safety concerns as the offset voltage could change unpredictably. A new wireless power transfer circuit is presented for the design of an efficient system to wirelessly deliver charge-balanced biphasic waveforms through passive electrodes for transcorneal electrical stimulation. The absence of active components allows the development of a flexible e-lens system for therapeutic electrical stimulation of the eye.

Maximizing Charge Injection Limits of Iridium Oxide Electrodes with a Programmable Anodic Bias Circuit

Efficacious stimulation of neural tissues requires high charge injection capacity while minimizing electrode polarization. Applying anodic bias on certain electrode materials is a way to enhance charge injection both in vitro and in vivo. We developed an embedded neurostimulator system that enabled a digital control of user-defined bias levels, without requiring a potentiometer or external voltage source. Comparison of charge injection with and without anodic-bias, as well as at different bias potentials were conducted in phosphate-buffered saline with Blackrock iridium oxide microelectrodes. Results showed that a nine-fold increase in current intensity and charge injection capacity, was achieved with a 0.7 V anodic bias and within electrochemically safe limits.

An Implantable Wireless Neural Interface System for Simultaneous Recording and Stimulation of Peripheral Nerve with a Single Cuff Electrode

Recently, implantable devices have become widely used in neural prostheses because they eliminate endemic drawbacks of conventional percutaneous neural interface systems. However, there are still several issues to be considered: low-efficiency wireless power transmission; wireless data communication over restricted operating distance with high power consumption; and limited functionality, working either as a neural signal recorder or as a stimulator. To overcome these issues, we suggest a novel implantable wireless neural interface system for simultaneous neural signal recording and stimulation using a single cuff electrode. By using widely available commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, an easily reconfigurable implantable wireless neural interface system was implemented into one compact module. The implantable device includes a wireless power consortium (WPC)-compliant power transmission circuit, a medical implant communication service (MICS)-band-based radio link and a cuff-electrode path controller for simultaneous neural signal recording and stimulation. During in vivo experiments with rabbit models, the implantable device successfully recorded and stimulated the tibial and peroneal nerves while communicating with the external device. The proposed system can be modified for various implantable medical devices, especially such as closed-loop control based implantable neural prostheses requiring neural signal recording and stimulation at the same time.
