Blind source separation of event-related potentials using a recurrent neural network

Event-related potentials (ERPs) are a superposition of electric potential differences generated by neurophysiological activity associated with psychophysical events. Spatiotemporal dissociation of these signal sources can supplement conventional ERP analysis and improve source localization. However, results from established source separation methods applied to ERPs can be challenging to interpret. Hence, we have developed a recurrent neural network (RNN) method for blind source separation. The RNN transforms input step pulse signals representing events into corresponding ERP difference waveforms. Source waveforms are obtained from penultimate layer units and scalp maps are obtained from feed-forward output layer weights that project these source waveforms onto EEG electrode amplitudes. An interpretable, sparse source representation is achieved by incorporating L1 regularization of signals obtained from the penultimate layer of the network during training. This RNN method was applied to four ERP difference waveforms (MMN, N170, N400, P3) from the open-access ERP CORE database, and independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to the same data for comparison. The RNN decomposed these ERPs into eleven spatially and temporally separate sources that were less noisy, tended to be more ERP-specific, and were less similar to each other than ICA-derived sources. The RNN sources also had less ambiguity between source waveform amplitude, scalp potential polarity, and equivalent current dipole orientation than ICA sources. In conclusion, the proposed RNN blind source separation method can be effectively applied to grand-average ERP difference waves and holds promise for further development as a computational model of event-related neural signals.

Multi-Subject Analysis for Brain Developmental Patterns Discovery via Tensor Decomposition of MEG Data

Identification of informative signatures from electrophysiological signals is important for understanding brain developmental patterns, where techniques such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) are particularly useful. However, less attention has been given to fully utilizing the multidimensional nature of MEG data for extracting components that describe these patterns. Tensor factorizations of MEG yield components that encapsulate the data's multidimensional nature, providing parsimonious models identifying latent brain patterns for meaningful summarization of neural processes. To address the need for meaningful MEG signatures for studies of pediatric cohorts, we propose a tensor-based approach for extracting developmental signatures of multi-subject MEG data. We employ the canonical polyadic (CP) decomposition for estimating latent spatiotemporal components of the data, and use these components for group level statistical inference. Using CP decomposition along with hierarchical clustering, we were able to extract typical early and late latency event-related field (ERF) components that were discriminative of high and low performance groups ([Formula: see text]) and significantly correlated with major cognitive domains such as attention, episodic memory, executive function, and language comprehension. We demonstrate that tensor-based group level statistical inference of MEG can produce signatures descriptive of the multidimensional MEG data. Furthermore, these features can be used to study group differences in brain patterns and cognitive function of healthy children. We provide an effective tool that may be useful for assessing child developmental status and brain function directly from electrophysiological measurements and facilitate the prospective assessment of cognitive processes.

Abnormal Information Flow in Schizophrenia Is Linked to Psychosis

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS

Prior research has shown that patients with schizophrenia (SZ) show disruption in brain network connectivity that is thought to underlie their cognitive and psychotic symptoms. However, most studies examining functional network disruption in schizophrenia have focused on the temporally correlated coupling of the strength of network connections. Here, we move beyond correlative metrics to assay causal computations of connectivity changes in directed neural information flow, assayed from a neural source to a target in SZ.

STUDY DESIGN

This study describes a whole-brain magnetoencephalography-imaging approach to examine causal computations of connectivity changes in directed neural information flow between brain regions during resting states, quantified by phase-transfer entropy (PTE) metrics, assayed from a neural source to an endpoint, in 21 SZ compared with 21 healthy controls (HC), and associations with cognitive and clinical psychotic symptoms in SZ.

STUDY RESULTS

We found that SZ showed significant disruption in information flow in alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (12-30 Hz) frequencies, compared to HC. Reduced information flow in alpha frequencies from the precuneus to the medio-ventral occipital cortex was associated with more severe clinical psychopathology (ie, positive psychotic symptoms), while reduced information flow between insula and middle temporal gyrus was associated with worsening cognitive symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

The present findings highlight the importance of delineating dysfunction in neural information flow in specific oscillatory frequencies between distinct regions that underlie the cognitive and psychotic symptoms in SZ, and provide potential neural biomarkers that could lead to innovations in future neuromodulation treatment development.

Advanced Bioelectrical Signal Processing Methods: Past, Present and Future Approach-Part II: Brain Signals

As it was mentioned in the previous part of this work (Part I)-the advanced signal processing methods are one of the quickest and the most dynamically developing scientific areas of biomedical engineering with their increasing usage in current clinical practice. In this paper, which is a Part II work-various innovative methods for the analysis of brain bioelectrical signals were presented and compared. It also describes both classical and advanced approaches for noise contamination removal such as among the others digital adaptive and non-adaptive filtering, signal decomposition methods based on blind source separation, and wavelet transform.
