Abstract
SCOPE Aged laying hen is recently suggested as a more attractive animal model than rodent for studying nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) of humans. This study aims to reveal effects and metabolic regulation mechanisms of taurine alleviating NAFLD by using the aged laying hen model. METHODS AND RESULTS Liver histomorphology and biochemical indices show 0.02% taurine effectively alleviated fat deposition and liver damage. Comparative liver lipidomics and gene expressions analyses reveal taurine promoted lipolysis, fatty acids oxidation, lipids transport, and reduced oxidative stress in liver. Furthermore, comparative serum metabolomics screen six core metabolites negatively correlated with NAFLD, including linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, pantothenate, L-methionine, 2-methylbutyroylcarnitine, L-carnitine; and two core metabolites positively correlated with NAFLD, including lysophosphatidylcholine (14:0/0:0) and lysophosphatidylcholine (16:0/0:0). Metabolic pathway analysis reveals taurine mainly regulated linoleic acid metabolism, cysteine and methionine metabolism, carnitine metabolism, pantothenic acid and coenzyme A biosynthesis metabolism, and glycerophospholipid metabolism to up-adjust levels of six negatively correlated metabolites and down-adjust two positively correlated metabolites for alleviating NAFLD of aged hens. CONCLUSION This study firstly reveals underlying metabolic mechanisms of taurine alleviating NAFLD using the aged hen model, thereby laying the foundation for taurine's application in the prevention of NAFLD in both human and poultry.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been linked to fat accumulation in the liver and lipid metabolism imbalance. Sesamin, a lignan commonly found in sesame seed oil, possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. However, the precise mechanisms by which sesamin prevents hepatic steatosis are not well understood. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms by which sesamin may improve lipid metabolism dysregulation. A in vitro hepatic steatosis model was established by exposing HepG2 cells to palmitate sodium. The results showed that sesamin effectively mitigated lipotoxicity and reduced reactive oxygen species production. Additionally, sesamin suppressed lipid accumulation by regulating key factors involved in lipogenesis and lipolysis, such as fatty acid synthase (FASN), sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c), forkhead box protein O-1, and adipose triglyceride lipase. Molecular docking results indicated that sesamin could bind to estrogen receptor α (ERα) and reduce FASN and SREBP-1c expression via the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase β (CaMKKβ)/AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway. Sesamin attenuated palmitate-induced lipotoxicity and regulated hepatic lipid metabolism in HepG2 cells by activating the ERα/CaMKKβ/AMPK signaling pathway. These findings suggest that sesamin can improve lipid metabolism disorders and is a promising candidate for treating hepatic steatosis.

Abstract
Sesame is principally used to generate oil, which is produced by chemical refining or pressing. Sesame meal, as a main byproduct of sesame oil extraction, is usually discarded, causing resource waste and economic loss. Sesame meal is rich in sesame protein and three types of sesame lignans (sesamin, sesamolin, and sesamol). Sesame protein extracted via a physical method and an enzymic method has balanced amino acid composition and is an important protein source, and thus it is often added to animal feed and used as a human dietary supplement. Extracted sesame lignan exhibits multiple biological activities such as antihypertensive, anticancer, and cholesterol-lowering activities, and therefore it is used to improve the oxidative stability of oils. This review summarizes the extraction methods, functional activities, and comprehensive utilization of four active substances (sesame protein, sesamin, sesamolin, and sesamol) in sesame meal with the aim to provide theoretical guidance for the maximum utilization of sesame meal.

Abstract
The physiological activity of γ-linolenic acid (GLA)-rich evening primrose oil and eicosapentaenoic and doxosahexaenoic acids-rich fish oil, which affect hepatic fatty acid oxidation and synthesis, and adipose tissue mRNA expression were compared in diabetic obese KK-A y mice. The mice were fed diets containing 100 g/kg of either palm oil (saturated fat), GLA oil, or fish oil for 21 days. These oils, compared with palm oil, greatly increased the activity and mRNA levels of hepatic fatty acid oxidation enzymes. These oils also increased the carnitine concentrations and mRNA levels of carnitine transporter (solute carrier family 22, member 5) in the liver. In general, these effects were comparable between GLA and fish oils. In contrast, GLA and fish oils, compared with palm oil, reduced the activity and mRNA levels of the proteins related to hepatic lipogenesis, except for those of malic enzyme. The reducing effect was stronger for fish oil than for GLA oil. These changes were accompanied by reductions in the triacylglycerol levels in the serum and liver. The reduction in the liver was stronger for fish oil than for GLA oil. These oils also reduced epididymal adipose tissue weight accompanied by a reduction in the mRNA levels of several proteins that regulate adipocyte functions; these effects were stronger for fish oil than for GLA oil. These oils were also effective in reducing serum glucose levels. Therefore, both fish oil and GLA-rich oil were effective at ameliorating metabolic disorders related to obesity and diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Dietary intervention is becoming more popular as a way to improve lipid metabolism and reduce the prevalence of diet-related chronic disorders. We evaluated the effects of several dietary oils on body weight, fat mass, liver weight, and tumor necrosis factor in obese mice given a high-fat diet (HFD) to discover if coix seed oil (CSO) had an anti-obesity impact. As compared to other dietary fats, CSO treatment considerably lowered body weight and liver index, successfully sup-pressed total cholesterol and triglyceride content, and raised liver lipid deposition and lipid metabolism problem induced by high fat intake. Furthermore, gas chromatography research revealed that CSO extracted by supercritical fluid, with 64% being CSO extracted by supercritical fluid, and the greatest amounts of capric acids and lauric acids being 35.28% and 22.21%, respectively. CSO contained a high content of medium-chain fatty acids and was able to modify hepatic fatty acid metabolism and lipid levels in HFD-induced obese mice. According to the results, CSO has the potential to replace dietary lipids as a promising functional lipid in the prevention of met-abolish disorders.

Abstract
Excessive dietary intake of fats and sugars (“Western diet”, WD) is one of the leading causes of obesity. The consumption of the microalga Arthrospira platensis (spirulina, Sp) is increasing due to its presumed health benefits. Both WD and Sp are also consumed by pregnant and breastfeeding women. This study investigated if gestating and lactating domestic pigs are an appropriate model for WD-induced metabolic disturbances similar to those observed in humans and if Sp supplementation may attenuate any of these adverse effects. Pigs were fed a WD high in fat, sugars, and cholesterol or a control diet. Half of the animals per diet group were supplemented with 20 g Sp per day. The WD did not increase body weight or adipose tissue accumulation but led to metabolic impairments such as higher cholesterol concentration in plasma, lower IGF1 plasma levels, and signs of hepatic damage compared to the control group. Spirulina supplementation could not reduce all the metabolic impairments observed in WD-fed animals. These findings indicate limited suitability of gestating and lactating domestic pigs as a model for WD but a certain potential of low-dose Sp supplementation to partially attenuate negative WD effects.

Abstract
Excessive fat deposition is the main character in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), while γ-linolenic acid (GLA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that can reduce lipid deposition. This study investigated the effect and regulatory mechanism of GLA (100 μM) on lipid metabolism in alpha mouse liver 12 (AML-12) cells treated by 400 μM palmitic acid (PA). GLA reduced lipid content and increased fatty acid β oxidation, as indicated by decreasing triglyceride and cholesterol contents and increasing mRNA and protein expressions of CPT1α and PPARα. GLA relieved oxidative stress caused by PA, upregulated mRNA levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, and decreased reactive oxygen species content. GLA reduced apoptosis, as indicated by decreases in the BAX/BCL2 expression level and apoptosis percentage. GLA activated autophagy, autophagosome-lysosome fusion, and LKB1-AMPK-mTOR signaling and upregulated mRNA and protein expressions of Beclin-1, autophagy-related 5, and liver kinase B1 (LKB1). These effects of GLA on lipid metabolism disorders of PA-treated hepatocytes were reversed by autophagy inhibitor 3MA and AMPK inhibitor compound C, confirming our conclusions. Overall, GLA can protect AML-12 cells from lipid metabolism disorder caused by PA via balancing autophagy and apoptosis mediated by the LKB1-AMPK-mTOR pathway. Consequently, GLA, as a dietary supplement, can help to prevent and treat NAFLD by regulating lipid metabolism and autophagy.

Abstract
The effects of different dietary fats on hepatic fatty acid oxidation were compared in male ICR mice and Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were fed diets containing 100 g/kg of either palm oil (saturated fat), safflower oil (rich in linoleic acid), an oil of evening primrose origin (γ-linolenic acid, GLA oil), perilla oil (α-linolenic acid) or fish oil (eicosapentaenoic and doxosahexaenoic acids) for 21 d. GLA, perilla and fish oils, compared with palm and safflower oils, increased the activity of fatty acid oxidation enzymes in both mice and rats, with some exceptions. In mice, GLA and fish oils greatly increased the peroxisomal palmitoyl-CoA oxidation rate, and the activity of acyl-CoA oxidase and enoyl-CoA hydratase to the same degree. The effects were much smaller with perilla oil. In rats, enhancing effects were more notable with fish oil than with GLA and perilla oils, excluding the activity of enoyl-CoA hydratase, and were comparable between GLA and perilla oils. In mice, strong enhancing effects of GLA oil, which were greater than with perilla oil and comparable to those of fish oil, were confirmed on mRNA levels of peroxisomal but not mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation enzymes. In rats, the effects of GLA and perilla oils on mRNA levels of peroxisomal and mitochondrial enzymes were indistinguishable, and lower than those observed with fish oil. Therefore, considerable diversity in the response to dietary polyunsaturated fats, especially the oil rich in γ-linolenic acid and fish oil, of hepatic fatty acid oxidation pathway exists between mice and rats.

Abstract
The current study aimed to examine the effects of dietary spirulina supplementation in high-energy (HE) diets on fatty acid metabolism in sheep, and preliminarily explored the potential mechanisms underlying the associated autophagy-mediated regulation of lipid metabolism. In a 2 × 3 factorial design, including six treatment combinations of two metabolisable energy diets (10 and 11 MJ/kg DM), three spirulina supplementation levels (0, 1%, and 3%) were used. Serum alanineaminotransferase (ALT) (p = 0.003) and aspartatetransaminase (AST) (p = 0.002) activities increased, whereas total PUFA content (p < 0.001) decreased in the liver of lambs fed a HE diet. With the addition of spirulina, serum ALT (p = 0.037) and AST (p = 0.014) activities decreased, whereas EPA (p = 0.004), GLA (p = 0.019), n-6 PUFA (p = 0.005), and total PUFA contents (p = 0.019) increased. Moreover, the crude protein content in the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) increased (p = 0.013), the expression of PPARα and PPARγ was up-regulated, while ELOVL2 was down-regulated in liver and LTL (p < 0.05). Spirulina supplementation increased mRNA expression levels of autophagy-associated genes, including that of Beclin-1, AMPK, and ULK1 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, spirulina supplementation in a HE diet exerted a protective effect on the liver, increased PUFA content, and modulated expression levels of autophagy-related genes in growing lambs.

Abstract
Simple Summary The current work evaluates the application of solid-state fermented wheat bran supplemented with agrimony extract in broiler nutrition. Broiler production parameters, blood and bone variables and meat quality were analysed. The quality of breast and thigh meat was evaluated by the use of physicochemical variables, fatty acid profile, lipid oxidation and sensory variables. The presented results showed that supplementation of the broiler diet with fermented feed positively influenced the quality of the produced breast and thigh meat. The application of fermented feed increased the nutritional value of broiler chicken meat, as shown via the positive modification of the fatty acid profile, without affecting sensory quality. Abstract The impact of the broiler diet modification on the following parameters was evaluated: meat quality, carcass traits, and bone and blood parameters. One hundred twenty one-day-old COBB 500 broiler chickens were assigned to three experimental groups (40 birds per group) with four replications (10 per pen) for 35 days of fattening. The control (C) was fed a basic feed mixture. The diet supplemented with 10% of fermented feed (FF10) and additionally supported by 0.2% of agrimony extract (FF10 + AE) was applied to the second and third groups, respectively. FF10 showed both a lower average daily feed intake and total feed consumption when compared to that of C (p < 0.05). Lower concentration of alkaline-phosphatase and calcium and higher total lipids and triglycerides in blood were observed in FF10 + AE. Breast and thigh meat showed a lower content of polyunsaturated fatty acid n-3 and n-6 in the FF10 + AE group (p < 0.01). The increase of gamma-linolenic acid content in breast and thigh meat samples obtained from the experimental groups was significant (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05; respectively). Lower lipid oxidation was observed in the thigh muscle of the FF10 + AE group on the first day of storage (p < 0.01). The current study indicates that FF10 + AE supplementation can be successfully applied to enhance broiler performance and meat quality.

Abstract
Lignans and neolignans are plant secondary metabolites derived from the oxidative coupling of phenylpropanoids. Biological activity of these phenolic compounds ranges from antioxidant, antitumor (terminaloside P, IC50 = 10 nM), anti-inflammatory, anti-neurodegenerative (schibitubin B, IC50 = 3.2 nM) and antiviral (patentiflorin A, IC50 = 14-23 nM) to antimicrobial. In addition, it was observed that several members of this group, namely enterolactone and its biochemical precursors also known as phytoestrogens, possess important protective properties. Most of these lignans and neolignans are presented in reasonable amounts in one's diet and thus the protection they provide against the colon and breast cancer, to name a few, is even more important to note. Similarly, neuroprotective properties were observed (schisanwilsonin G, IC50 = 3.2 nM) These structural motives also serve as an important starting point in the development of anticancer drugs. Presumably the most famous members of this family, etoposide and teniposide, synthetic derivatives of podophyllotoxin, are used in the clinical treatment of lymphocytic leukemia, certain brain tumors, and lung tumors already for nearly 20 years. This review describes 413 lignans and neolignans which have been isolated between 2016 and mid-2018 being reported in more than 300 peer-reviewed articles. It covers their source, structure elucidation, and bioactivity. Within the review, the structure-based overview of compounds as well as the bioactivity-based overview of compounds are described.

Abstract
T-2 toxin (T-2), one of the naturally occurring mycotoxins, often accumulates in aquatic animals from contaminated feed. Shrimp (n = 30 per group) were fed with different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.5, 4.5 and 13.5 mg kg-1) of T-2 for 20 days. Changes in histopathology, fatty acid and water distribution of shrimp muscle were analyzed. Histopathology of shrimp muscle showed dose-dependent marked degenerative and necrotic changes on exposure to dietary T-2. The T-2 significantly (P < 0.05) affected the muscle fatty acid composition. ∑SFA, ∑MUFA and ∑PUFA initially decreased and then increased slowly in the high-dosed groups. C16:0, C18:1n-9 and C18:2n-6 were the main saturated fatty acid (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), respectively. Also, T-2 significantly affected water distribution in shrimp muscle. High doses of T-2 reduced free water content, resulting in a reduction in the water holding capacity and hence changes to the shrimp muscle quality. Collectively, these results illustrated that T-2 significantly affects the fatty acid and water distribution, and also muscle histopathology, all of which would result in a reduction in the quality and nutritional value of shrimp.
