Abstract
Investigating technologies to control the allergenicity of seafood is particularly important to safeguard consumer health, but there is currently a dearth of research focused on reducing the allergenicity of clam meat. This study aimed to investigate the effects of high temperature-pressure (HTP) processing times (121 °C, 0.14 MPa; 5, 10, 15, 20 min) on the sensory quality, nutrition, and allergenicity of ready-to-eat clam meat. With the extension of HTP time, the hardness of clam meat gradually decreased, the chewiness decreased initially and then increased, and the meat became tender. HTP processing endowed clam meat with abundant esters and aldehydes. Among all the processing groups, the umami and saltiness were better at 15 min, correlating with the highest overall acceptability. Ready-to-eat clam meat contained high-protein nutritional value. Compared with raw clam meat, the tropomyosin allergenicity of clam meat treated with HTP for 15 and 20 min was significantly reduced by 51.9 % and 56.5 %, respectively (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between these two groups. Appropriate HTP processing time might be an efficient condition to reduce the tropomyosin allergenicity of ready-to-eat clam meat and improve its quality, particularly for the time of 15 min. The results of this study could provide a reliable theoretical basis for the development of hypoallergenic clam foods.

Abstract
To combat with climate change, most countries have set carbon neutrality target. However, our understanding on carbon removal, release and sequestration by mariculture remains unclear. Here, carbon removal, release and sequestration by maricultured seaweeds, shellfish and fish in Shandong Province during 2003-2022 were assessed using a comprehensive method that considers the processes of biological metabolism, seawater chemistry and carbon footprint. Saccharina japonica productivity has been largely enhanced since 2014, resulting in increased production and CO2 removal and sequestration. Seaweeds removed 172 Gg C and sequestered 62 Gg C in 2022. CO2 removal and release by shellfish demonstrated a slow increase trend, ranging from 231 to 374 Gg C yr-1 and 897 to 1438 Gg C yr-1 during 2003-2022, respectively. Contrary to seaweed and shellfish, maricultured fish added CO2 to seawater due to the use of feeds. The added CO2 by fish culture achieved the peak of 60 Gg C in 2011 and decreased to 25 Gg C in 2022. Most of this added CO2 was released to atmosphere by microbial mineralization and it was in the range of 21-52 Gg C yr-1 during 2003-2022. After summing up the contribution of seaweeds, shellfish and fish, both total CO2 removal (from 110 to 259 Gg C yr-1) and total CO2 release (from 929 to 1429 Gg C yr-1) increased remarkably during the past 20 years. To neutralize CO2 release by shellfish and fish, Pyropia yezoensis needs the largest culture area (1.65 ± 0.15 × 106 ha) while Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis requires the smallest area (0.11 ± 0.03 × 106 ha). In addition, there are enough available areas for culturing G. lemaneiformis, Ulva prolifera and Sargassum fusifarme to neutralize total CO2 emission in Shandong Province. This study elucidates carbon removal, release and sequestration capacities of mariculture and indicates that seaweed culture has a tremendous potential to achieve carbon neutrality target in Shandong.

Abstract
Despite both microplastics (MPs) and harmful algae blooms (HABs) may pose a severe threat to the immunity of marine bivalves, the toxification mechanism underlying is far from being fully understood. In addition, owing to the prevalence and sudden occurrence characteristics of MPs and HABs, respectively, bivalves with MP-exposure experience may face acute challenge of harmful algae under realistic scenarios. However, little is known about the impacts and underlying mechanisms of MP-exposure experience on the susceptibility of immunity to HABs in bivalve mollusks. Taking polystyrene MPs and diarrhetic shellfish toxin-producing Prorocentrum lima as representatives, the impacts of MP-exposure on immunity vulnerability to HABs were investigated in the thick-shell mussel, Mytilus coruscus. Our results revealed evident immunotoxicity of MPs and P. lima to the mussel, as evidenced by significantly impaired total count, phagocytic activity, and cell viability of haemocytes, which may result from the induction of oxidative stress, aggravation of haemocyte apoptosis, and shortage in cellular energy supply. Moreover, marked disruptions of immunity, antioxidant system, apoptosis regulation, and metabolism upon MPs and P. lima exposure were illustrated by gene expression and comparative metabolomic analyses. Furthermore, the mussels that experienced MP-exposure were shown to be more vulnerable to P. lima, indicated by greater degree of deleterious effects on abovementioned parameters detected. In general, our findings emphasize the threat of MPs and HABs to bivalve species, which deserves close attention and more investigation.

Abstract
Sustainable recovery of chitin and its derivatives from shellfish waste will be achieved when the industrial production of these polymers is achieved with a high control of their molecular structure, low costs, and acceptable levels of pollution. Therefore, the conventional chemical method for obtaining these biopolymers needs to be replaced or optimized. The goal of the present review is to ascertain what alternative methods are viable for the industrial-scale production of chitin, chitosan, and their oligomers. Therefore, a detailed review of recent literature was undertaken, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The analysis of the existing data allows suggesting that combining conventional, biological, and alternative methods is the most efficient strategy to achieve sustainable production, preventing negative impacts and allowing for the recovery of high added-value compounds from shellfish waste. In conclusion, a new process for obtaining chitinous materials is suggested, with the potential of reducing the consumption of reagents, energy, and water by at least 1/10, 1/4, and 1/3 part with respect to the conventional process, respectively.

Abstract
Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by some marine dinoflagellates can cause severe human intoxication via vectors like bivalves. Toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum produce a novel group of hydroxybenzoate PSTs named GC toxins, but their biokinetics in bivalves haven't been well examined. In this experiment, we analyzed PSTs in bay scallops Argopecten irradians exposed to G. catenatum (strain MEL11) to determine their accumulation, elimination, anatomical distribution, and biotransformation. To our surprise, up to 30% of the PSTs were accumulated in the adductor muscle of scallops at the end of the experiment, and the toxicity of adductor muscle exceeded the regulatory limit of 800 μg STXeq/kg in only 6 days. High concentration of toxins in the adductor muscle are likely linked to the rapid transfer of GC toxins from viscera to other tissues. Moreover, most GC toxins in scallops were found rapidly transformed to decarbamoyl toxins through enzyme-mediated hydrolysis, which was further supported by the in vitro incubation experiments. Our study demonstrates that GC toxins actively participate in toxin distribution and transformation in scallops, which may increase the risks of food poisoning associated with the consumption of scallop adductor muscle. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The negative impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a global environmental concern under the joint effects of cultural eutrophication and climate change. Our study, targeted on the biokinetics of paralytic shellfish toxins in scallops exposed to Gymnodinium catenatum producing unique GC toxins, aims to elucidate potential risks of seafood poisoning associated with GC toxins. The findings of this study will help us to understand the roles of GC toxins in seafood poisoning, and to develop effective management strategies against toxic algal blooms and phycotoxins.

Abstract
Biomonitoring of marine life has been enhanced in recent years by the integration of innovative DNA-based approaches, which offer advantages over more laborious techniques (e.g. microscopy). However, trade-offs between throughput, sensitivity and quantitative measurements must be made when choosing between the prevailing molecular methodologies (i.e. metabarcoding or qPCR/dPCR). Thus, the aim of the present study was to demonstrate the utility of a microfluidic-enabled high-throughput quantitative PCR platform (HTqPCR) for the rapid and cost-effective development and validation of a DNA-based multi-species biomonitoring toolkit, using larvae of 23 commercially targeted bivalve and crustacean species as a case study. The workflow was divided into three main phases: definition of (off-) target taxa and establishment of reference databases (PHASE 1); selection/development and assessment of molecular assays (PHASE 2); and protocol optimization and field validation (PHASE 3). 42 assays were eventually chosen and validated. Genetic signal not only showed good correlation with direct visual counts by microscopy but also showed the ability to provide quantitative data at the highest taxonomic resolution (species level) in a time- and cost-effective fashion. This study developed a biomonitoring toolkit, demonstrating the considerable advantages of this state-of-the-art technology in boosting the developmental testing and application of panels of molecular assays for the monitoring and management of natural resources. Once developed, this approach provides a cost and time-effective alternative compared to other multi-species approaches (e.g. metabarcoding). In addition, it is transferable to a wide range of species and will aid future monitoring programmes.

Abstract
One new lanostane-type triterpenoid, 3β-acetoxy-7,11-dioxolanosta-8,24-dien-21-oic acid (1), together with six known analogues (2-7), were isolated from the cultures of a marine fungus Ceriporia lacerata CD7-5, which was derived from the shellfish Ostrea denselamellosa. Their structures were determined by detailed analysis of spectroscopic data and comparison with the literature reported. The biological activities of these lanostane triterpenoids against marine-derived microalgae, zooplankton, and pathogenic bacteria were also evaluated in this study.

Abstract
Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by marine dinoflagellates significantly impact shellfish industries worldwide. Early detection on-farm and with minimal training would allow additional time for management decisions to minimize economic losses. Here, we describe and test a standardized workflow based on the detection of sxtA4, an initial gene in the biosynthesis of PSTs. The workflow is simple and inexpensive and does not require a specialized laboratory. It consists of (1) water collection and filtration using a custom gravity sampler, (2) buffer selection for sample preservation and cell lysis for DNA, and (3) an assay based on a region of sxtA, DinoDtec lyophilized quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay. Water samples spiked with Alexandrium catenella showed a cell recovery of >90% when compared to light microscopy counts. The performance of the lysis method (90.3% efficient), Longmire's buffer, and the DinoDtec qPCR assay (tested across a range of Alexandrium species (90.7-106.9% efficiency; r2 > 0.99)) was found to be specific, sensitive, and efficient. We tested the application of this workflow weekly from May 2016 to 30th October 2017 to compare the relationship between sxtA4 copies L-1 in seawater and PSTs in mussel tissue (Mytilus galloprovincialis) on-farm and spatially (across multiple sites), effectively demonstrating an ∼2 week early warning of two A. catenella HABs (r = 0.95). Our tool provides an early, accurate, and efficient method for the identification of PST risk in shellfish aquaculture.

Abstract
Shell waste from shellfish processing contains valuable natural polysaccharides, including sulfated polysaccharides, acidic polysaccharides, glycosaminoglycans, chitin and their derivatives. These shellfish waste-derived polysaccharides have numerous functional and biological properties that can be applied in various industries, including the cosmeceutical industry. In keeping with global sustainability and green industry trends, the cosmeceuticals industry is transitioning from petrochemical-based ingredients to natural substitutes. In this context, shell waste-derived polysaccharides and their derivatives can play a major role as natural substitutes for petroleum-based components in various cosmeceutical skincare, hair care, oral care and body care products. This review focuses on the presence of polysaccharides and their derivatives in shell waste and discusses their various cosmeceutical applications in skin care, hair care, sun care, oral care and body care products. This indicates that shell waste utilization will help create a circular economy in which extracted polysaccharides are used to produce green cosmeceutical products.

Abstract
Streptomyces is a Gram-positive bacterium, belonging to the family Streptomycetaceae and order Streptomycetales. Several strains from different species of Streptomyces can be used to promote the health and growth of artificially cultured fish and shellfish by producing secondary metabolites including antibiotics, anticancer agents, antiparasitic agents, antifungal agents, and enzymes (protease and amylase). Some Streptomyces strains also exhibit antagonistic and antimicrobial activity against aquaculture-based pathogens by producing inhibitory compounds such as bacteriocins, siderophores, hydrogen peroxide, and organic acids to compete for nutrients and attachment sites in the host. The administration of Streptomyces in aquaculture could also induce an immune response, disease resistance, quorum sensing/antibiofilm activity, antiviral activity, competitive exclusion, modification in gastrointestinal microflora, growth enhancement, and water quality amelioration via nitrogen fixation and degradation of organic residues from the culture system. This review provides the current status and prospects of Streptomyces as potential probiotics in aquaculture, their selection criteria, administrative methods, and mechanisms of action. The limitations of Streptomyces as probiotics in aquaculture are highlighted and the solutions to these limitations are also discussed.

Abstract
The ecological effects of climate change and ocean acidification (OA) have been extensively studied. Various microalgae are ecologically important in the overall pelagic food web as key contributors to oceanic primary productivity. Additionally, no organism exists in isolation in a complex environment, and shifts in food quality may lead to indirect OA effects on consumers. This study aims to investigate the potential effects of OA on algal trophic composition and subsequent bivalve growth. Here, the growth and nutrient fractions of Chlorella sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Chaetocetos muelleri were used to synthesize and assess the impact of OA on primary productivity. Total protein content, total phenolic compounds, and amino acid (AA) and fatty acid (FA) content were evaluated as nutritional indicators. The results demonstrated that the three microalgae responded positively to OA in the future environment, significantly enhancing growth performance and nutritional value as a food source. Additionally, certain macromolecular fractions found in consumers are closely linked to their dietary sources, such as phenylalanine, C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C20:1n9, C18:0, and C18:3n. Our findings illustrate that OA affects a wide range of crucial primary producers in the oceans, which can disrupt nutrient delivery and have profound impacts on the entire marine ecosystem and human food health.

Abstract
To better understand the ecological effects of mariculture, the diversity distribution, determinant and interaction of microeukaryote communities from fish cage and suspended shellfish farming were investigated in three bays of South China Coast. Our alpha and beta diversity analyses showed that the difference of the microeukaryote community between fish and shellfish farming was more significant at local than regional scale, and microeukaryotes respond more to spatial effect than mariculture effect at regional scale. Mantel test, variation partitioning analysis and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the environmental factors especially chemical and biotic factors contributed more to community assembly in fish than shellfish farming. Based on the comparisons of community composition and determinant between fish and shellfish farming, the effect mechanisms of the two farming types on microeukaryote community were proposed. Fish farming brings significant environmental variation and thus has strong bottom-up impacts on microeukaryotes, while shellfish farming exerts a grazing pressure on microeukaryotes by filter-feeding and has top-down control to them. Furthermore, the network stability analyses revealed weaker community stability in fish than shellfish farming, suggesting that the microeukaryote community was more sensitive to environmental change deduced by fish than shellfish farming. Overall, this study revealed the different influencing mechanisms of fish and shellfish mariculture on microeukaryotes, which will improve the understanding of the ecological effects of mariculture and provide guidance for the management of mariculture under future environmental pressures.

Abstract
Filter-feeding bivalves could accumulate paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by harmful dinoflagellates through diet. Despite that bivalves are resistant to these neurotoxins due to possessing PST-resistant sodium channel, exposure to PSTs-producing dinoflagellates impair bivalve survival. We hypothesized that ingesting PSTs-producing dinoflagellates may influence the gut microbiota, and then the health of bivalves. To test this idea, we compared the gut microbiota of the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis, after feeding with PST-producing or non-toxic dinoflagellates. Exposure to PSTs-producing dinoflagellates resulted in a decline of gut microbial diversity and a disturbance of community structure, accompanied by a significant increase in the abundance and richness of pathogenic bacteria, represented by Vibrio. Moreover, network analysis demonstrated extensive positive correlations between pathogenic bacteria abundances and PSTs concentrations in the digestive glands of the scallops. Furthermore, isolation of a dominant Vibrio strain and its genomic analysis revealed a variety of virulence factors, including the tolC outer membrane exporter, which were expressed in the gut microbiota. Finally, the infection experiment demonstrated scallop mortality caused by the isolated Vibrio strain; further, the pathogenicity of this Vibrio strain was attenuated by a mutation in the tolC gene. Together, these findings demonstrated that the PSTs may affect gut microbiota via direct and taxa-specific interactions with opportunistic pathogens, which proliferate after transition from seawater to the gut environment. The present study has revealed novel mechanisms towards deciphering the puzzles in environmental disturbances-caused death of an important aquaculture species.

Abstract
Okadaic acid (OA) is one of the main virulence factors of diarrheal shellfish toxins (DSP). It is of great significance to detect OA with an accurate, specific and cost-effective technique in the fields of seafood safety and water quality control. In this work, an electrochemical aptasensor with reverse amplification was developed for the sensitive detection of OA. A two-dimensional graphite-phase nanomaterial (carbon nitride) modified with an anti-OA aptamer and thionine (Th) was immobilized onto the surface of the electrochemical electrode as the sensitive element to capture target OA molecules. ssDNA-modified carbon nitride was used as the reverse amplification element by hybridizing with non-OA linked aptamers. The preparation of the electrochemical aptasensor was well characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), zeta potential detection, UV-Vis absorption, Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET) measurements, and electrochemical measurements. The quantitative assessment of OA was achieved by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Experimental results indicated that this aptasensor showed a concentration-dependent response to OA with a good detection performance including in terms of selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. It exhibited 100-fold selectivity between OA and other toxins including dinophysistoxins (DTX), pectenotoxins (PTX), and yessotoxins (YTX). In addition, it showed a much wider quantification range, which is 10-13 M-10-10 M (0.080-80.50 pg mL-1). The detection limit was as low as 10-13 M (0.080 pg mL-1). The aptasensor also successfully achieved significant practicality on real shellfish samples contaminated by OA. All these results demonstrated that the reverse amplification strategy for marine toxin detection may provide a label-free and rapid detection approach for portable applications in the fields of environmental monitoring and food security.

Abstract
Norovirus is the predominant cause of viral acute gastroenteritis globally. While person-to-person is the most reported transmission route, norovirus is also associated with waterborne and foodborne illness, including from the consumption of contaminated bivalve molluscan shellfish. The main cause of shellfish contamination is via the bioaccumulation of norovirus from growing waters impacted by human wastewater. However, data on the persistence of infectious norovirus in the environment are limited due to a lack of a human norovirus culture method in the past. In this study, we applied the recently established method of norovirus replication in human intestinal enteroids to determine the persistence of norovirus in artificial estuarine water at 25 ppt for up to 21 days at 4 °C and 16 °C in the dark. Infectious norovirus was detected for up to 21 days. The relative infectivity declined from 100 to 3% at day 21, with decay rate constants of 0.07 day-1 at 4 °C and 0.17 day-1 at 16 °C. There was no decrease in norovirus titres as measured by reverse transcription-droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR), confirming the lack of the relationship between norovirus infectivity and direct detection by PCR. The results confirm that norovirus can remain infectious for at least 3 weeks in an estuarine water environment, presenting associated health risks.

Abstract
We employed a detection method to quantify Alexandrium catenella (Group I), one of the causative species for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in Jinhae-Masan Bay, Korea, targets sxtA4, via chip-based digital PCR. Additionally, we explored the dynamics of Alexandrium during the spring of 2022 using an rDNA-based quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay to enhance the performance of the dPCR assay. In matching dPCR results with PSP monitoring reports, we optimized a cell regulatory threshold of 102 cells L-1, the maximum cell density when shellfish harvesting was permitted, for the dPCR assay. This threshold functioned similar to the PST threshold used in mouse bioassays (MBAs). Furthermore, we validated a total concordance rate of 83.8 % between the two assays for 2020-2022, reaching a maximum of 96.2 % in 2020. Thus, the result of dPCR could complement MBAs, facilitating the early detection of PSP outbreaks.

Abstract
Viral testing combined with hydrographic studies is considered standard good practice in determining microbiological impacts on shellfish growing areas following wastewater overflows. In this study, norovirus genogroup I and II, indicators of viral contamination (F-RNA bacteriophage genogroup II (F-RNA GII), crAssphage, pepper mild mottle virus) and Escherichia coli were monitored during periods of normal harvesting and following overflows in two commercial shellfish growing areas in Otago Harbour (Aotearoa New Zealand). Dye tracing, drogue tracking and analysis of particle tracking modelling were also undertaken to assess the dispersion, dilution and time of travel of wastewater discharged from a pump station discharge that impacts the growing areas. Norovirus was not detected in any of the 218 shellfish samples tested. PMMoV and crAssphage were more prevalent than F-RNA GII as determined by RT-qPCR. The dye study indicated long residence time of the waters (≥5 days) in the embayment impacted by the discharge. No relationships were found between the concentrations of viral indicators or E. coli and wastewater dilution, distance between the discharge and the growing areas or time since the last overflow. For the three spills studied (≤327 m3), there was little evidence of microbiological impact on the growing areas. This was likely associated with a deep shipping channel that enhances water flushing in the harbour and reduces contaminant transport to the growing areas. We recommend flexibility in the approach for closure/reopening growing areas impacted by spills, particularly for small duration/volume spills and when norovirus is not present in the community.

Abstract
This study sought to develop models for predicting near-term (1-3 day) fecal contamination events in coastal shellfish growing waters. Using Random Forest regression, we (1) developed fecal coliform (FC) concentration models for shellfish growing areas using watershed characteristics and antecedent hydrologic and meteorologic observations as predictors, (2) tested the change in model performance associated when forecasted, as opposed to measured, rainfall variables were used as predictors, and (3) evaluated model predictor importance in relation to shellfish sanitation management criteria. Models were trained to 10 years of coastal FC measurements (n = 1285) for 5 major shellfish management areas along the Florida (USA) coast. Model performance varied between the 5 management areas with R2 ranging from 0.36 to 0.72. Antecedent precipitation variables were among the most important predictors in the day-of forecast models in all management areas. When forecasted rainfall was included in the models, wind components became increasingly important.

Abstract
This paper empirically examines the role of circularity performance on the performance of marine living resources to prove its role in promoting a sustainable blue economy. We use five different metrics to quantify the marine living resources of nations in the European regions, including the value added at the factor costs of small-scale capture fisheries, shellfish aquaculture, freshwater aquaculture, marine aquaculture, and large-scale capture fisheries. By using various econometric techniques, we provide evidence of the importance of circularity performance in improving the sustainability of the blue economy in the European region during the 2009-2020 period. However, it is more likely that this effect is only positive in the long term. In the long run, circularity performance affects many marine living resource components in a statistically meaningful way.

Abstract
The Beagle Channel is a Subantarctic semi-estuarine environment at the southern tip of South America, where intoxication events associated with harmful algal blooms have been reported since 1886, including a world record in toxicity due to Alexandrium catenella in 1992. Toxic algae affect public health and ecosystem services, particularly mussel aquaculture and fisheries management. During the austral summer of 2022, an intense bloom of A. catenella (5 × 104 cells L-1) occurred in the Beagle Channel, leading to the second most toxic event in the area, with mussel toxicity reaching 197,266 µg STXeq kg-1. This event was synchronous with the mortality of marine organisms from different trophic levels and terrestrial fauna, i.e., two Fuegian red foxes and a southern caracara. Stomach content and liver samples from dead kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus), Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus), papua penguins (Pygoscelis papua), and imperial cormorants (Leucocarbo atriceps), presented variable paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) levels (up to 3427 µg STXeq kg-1) as measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), suggesting that deaths were associated with high PST toxicity level. The different toxin profiles found in phytoplankton, zooplankton, squat lobsters (Grimothea gregaria), Fuegian sprat (Sprattus fuegensis), and seabirds evidenced possible toxin transformation along the food web and the possible transfer vectors. The unexpected detection of PST in terrestrial fauna (up to 2707 µg STXeq kg-1) suggested intoxication by scavenging on squat lobsters, which had high toxicity (26,663 µg STXeq kg-1). PST trace levels were also detected in a liver sample of a dead false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens), an oceanic odontocete stranded on the coast during the bloom. Overall, our results denote the exceptional nature of the toxic, multispecies mortality event and that toxins may propagate to several levels of the food web in this Subantarctic environment.

Abstract
The Galician rías (NW Iberia, Spain) are coastal embayments at the northern boundary of the Canary Current upwelling system. Their favourable conditions for phytoplankton growth turn them into a suitable area for the development of aquaculture activities and a site of most of the national shellfish production. Phytoplankton blooms, a natural phenomenon inside the rías, under certain conditions eventually lead to seawater discolourations (colloquially known as "red tides"). Because of their transient nature, available records derive mainly from opportunistic samplings or casual observations, and are scattered in the literature. As a rule of thumb, red tides in the NW Iberian Peninsula are of non-toxic nature and are not systematically monitored. However, in recent years striking exceptions such as those of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum, a producer of paralytic shellfish toxins, have been registered. The present study goes through a historical overview of red tides in the Galician rías, describing their colouring, responsible organisms, seasonal and geographical occurrence, and their association with other features (harmful algal blooms, biotoxins and shellfish harvesting closures, bioluminescence, etc.), ending with social challenges and proposals for improving the monitoring of red tides in the future.

Abstract
Norovirus (NoV) is an enteric virus with foodborne transmission. Bivalve shellfish are a main source of infections and outbreaks. In Italy a voluntary based monitoring plan to check the safety of bivalve shellfish was set up at provincial level. This study describes the occurrence and distribution of NoV in the Northern Adriatic Sea and in the Ligurian Sea. From October 2018 to September 2020, 807 bivalve shellfish samples (n = 205 oysters, n = 182 mussels, n = 348 clams, n = 72 other bivalve shellfish) were tested by One-Step Retrotranscription Real-time polymerase chain reaction for NoV GI and GII and quantified according to the ISO 15216-2:2013 and ISO 15216-1:2017. Positive samples were further analyzed to determine genotype by sequencing of the ORF1/ORF2 junction of the viral genome. A total of 126 samples were positive for NoV, mussels, and oysters had the highest probability of being positive and positive samples were found mainly in the colder season. Of these samples, 46% were NoV GII, 13% NoV GI, and 40% carried both genogroups. Thirty-seven samples were typeable (GI n = 12 and GII n = 25) with GI samples belonging to four genotypes and GII samples belonging to five genotypes. GII.3 genotype was the most prevalent, followed by GII.4, particularly Sydney 2012 subtype, a leading cause of infections worldwide, was found in three oysters' and three clams' samples. The phylogenetic analysis revealed a high heterogeneity among the species that are scattered in several clusters. Considering the low infectious dose the overall presence of NoV in edible shellfish, particular those to be eaten raw or undercooked, is moderately high. The presence of genotypes frequently involved in human infections strengthens the need for ongoing monitoring, which should be extended at national level.

Abstract
Bivalves show remarkable capacity to acclimate paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by dinoflagellates, severely affecting fishery industry and public health. Here, transcriptomic response to PSTs-producing dinoflagellate (Alexandrium minutum) was investigated in Zhikong scallop (Chlamys farreri) mantle. The PSTs accumulated in C. farreri mantle continually increased during the 15 days exposure, with "oxidation-reduction" genes induced compared to the control group at the 1st and 15th day. Through gene co-expression network analysis, 16 PSTs-responsive modules were enriched with up- or down-regulated genes. The concentration of GTXs, major PSTs in A. minutum and accumulated in scallops, was correlated with the up-regulated magenta module, enriching peroxisome genes as the potential mantle-specific PSTs biomarker. Moreover, Hsp70B2s were inhibited throughout the exposure, which together with the expanded neurotransmitter transporter SLC6As, may play essential roles on neurotransmitter homeostasis in scallop mantle. These results paved the way for a comprehensive understanding of defensive mechanism and homeostatic response in scallop mantle against PSTs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Relationships of fish-shellfish consumption, cognitive health and mortality from Alzheimer's disease (AD) among US adults aged 60 years and older have not been adequately studied. OBJECTIVES To determine the relationship of fish-shellfish consumption, cognitive health and mortality from AD in US adults aged 60 years and older. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS The data of this cross-sectional study of US adults aged 60 years and older were from the National Nutrition and Health Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets. Frequency of fish-shellfish consumption, its association with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and AD mortality of these participants between 1999 and 2018 and cognitive assessment scores between 2011 and 2014 were analyzed. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS US adults aged 60 years and older consumed fish-shellfish 1.2 times/week and had a blood Hg of 1.63 ug/L on average between 1999 and 2018. Participants aged 60 years and older in the highest quartile of fish-shellfish consumption (~3 times/week) had significantly higher cognitive assessment scores than those in the lowest quartile (rare or no fish-shellfish consumption). Adults in the highest quartile of fish-shellfish consumption had a 30% lower risk (odds ratio 0.7, 95%CI 0.57-0.87) of SCD, and 44% lower risk (hazard ratio 0.56, 95%CI 0.35-0.9) of AD mortality than those in the lowest quartile. CONCLUSION Increased fish-shellfish consumption was associated with improved scores of cognitive assessment and reduced risks of SCD and AD mortality.

Abstract
The shellfish processing industry is one of the largest growing industries across the globe with a market size of around USD 62B. However, it also leads to a significant environmental issue as it produces >80,000 tons of waste shells globally. Unfortunately, the slow degradation of this waste causes it to accumulate over time, posing a serious threat to the marine environment. The key solution to this problem is to recycle this sea waste into a valuable product like chitin which is further used to produce chitosan. Chitosan is a natural biopolymeric substance obtained via N-deacetylation of the chitin. The chitosan-based nanoparticles are further useful for the fabrication of biopolymeric nanocomposites which are used in various biomedical applications specifically in drug delivery. Here, we review the recent advancements in the development of chitosan-based nanocomposites as a biocompatible carrier for drug delivery, specifically focusing on gene delivery, wound healing, microbial treatment, and anticancer drug delivery. By providing a valuable and up-to-date resource, this review illuminates the current state of research concerning chitosan's pivotal role in the biomedical domain as an efficacious drug delivery agent.

Abstract
Spirolides (SPXs), gymnodimines (GYMs), and pinnatoxins (PnTXs) have been detected in shellfish from the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Spain. Several samples of bivalves were collected from Fangar Bay and Alfacs Bay in Catalonia over a period of over 7 years (from 2015 to 2021). Shellfish samples were analyzed for cyclic imines (CIs) on an LC1200 Agilent and 3200 QTrap triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. In shellfish, SPX-1 was detected in two cases (of 26.5 µg/kg and 34 µg/kg), and GYM-A was only detected in trace levels in thirteen samples. Pinnatoxin G (PnTX-G) was detected in 44.6% of the samples, with its concentrations ranging from 2 µg/kg to 38.4 µg/kg. Statistical analyses revealed that seawater temperature influenced the presence or absence of these toxins. PnTX-G showed an extremely significant presence/temperature relationship in both bays in comparison to SPX-1 and GYM-A. The prevalence of these toxins in different bivalve mollusks was evaluated. A seasonal pattern was observed, in which the maximum concentrations were found in the winter months for SPX-1 and GYM-A but in the summer months for PnTX-G. The obtained results indicate that it is unlikely that CIs in the studied area pose a potential health risk through the consumption of a seafood diet. However, further toxicological information about CIs is necessary in order to perform a conclusive risk assessment.

Abstract
Razor clams, belonging to the Pharidae and Solenidae families, are ecologically and economically important; however, very little research has been conducted on the Pharidae family. The genus Novaculina is a marine-derived freshwater lineage, and Novaculina chinensis is a rare freshwater species of the Pharidae family. In order to understand the phylogenetic relationships of N. chinensis, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome of the genus Novaculina, which is 16,262 bp in length and consists of 12 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). The phylogenetic relationships of 69 Imparidentian mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) indicated that N. chineisis is closely related to Sinonovacula constricta of the order Adapedonta. Our study also found that the Ka/Ks ratios of 12 protein-coding genes in the Pharidae family are lower than one, indicating the occurrence of negative purification selection. Morphological observations of the siphons of N. chinensis, Novaculina myanmarensis, and Novaculina gangetica indicate that N. chinensis may be the ancestral clade of the genus Novaculina, which has not been proposed in previous studies. Our study provides useful molecular information on the phylogenetic and evolutionary relationships of Pharidae and also contributes to the conservation and management of the germplasm resources of N. chinensis.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Given the involvement of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) in a wide range of seafood outbreaks, a systematical characterization of Vp fitness and transcriptomic changes at temperatures of critical importance for seafood production and storage is needed. In this study, one of each virulent Vp strain (tdh+ and trh+) was tested. While no difference in survival behavior of the two virulent strains was observed at 10°C, the tdh+ strain had a faster growth rate than the trh+ strain at 30°C. Transcriptomic analysis showed that a significantly higher number of genes were upregulated at 30°C than at 10°C. The majority of differentially expressed genes of Vp at 30°C were annotated to functional categories supporting cellular growth. At 10°C, the downregulation of the biofilm formation and histidine metabolism indicates that the current practice of storing seafood at low temperatures not only protects seafood quality but also ensures seafood safety.

Abstract
A variety of studies have investigated the toxic effects of microplastics (MPs) on microalgae, but few of them considered their influence on dinoflagellate toxins production, which could cause significant ecological safety concerns in coastal areas. This research investigated the impacts of 5 μg L-1 and 5 mg L-1 polystyrene (PS) MPs on the changes of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) production and their relationship with cellular oxidative stress of Alexandrium tamarense, a common harmful algal blooms causative dinoflagellate. The results showed elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, activation of antioxidant system and overproduction of PSTs were positively correlated under PS MPs exposure (especially under 5 mg L-1 PS MPs), and the PSTs changes were eliminated by the ROS inhibitor. Further transcriptomic analysis revealed that ROS could enhance biosynthesis of glutamate, providing raw materials for PSTs precursor arginine, accompanied with enhanced acetyl-CoA and ATP production, finally leading to the overproduction of PSTs. Moreover, the oxidative intracellular environments might block the reduction process from STX to C1&C2, leading to the increase of STX and decrease of C1&C2 proportions. This work brings the first evidence that ROS could mediate PSTs production and compositions of Alexandrium under MPs exposure, with important scientific and ecological significance.

Abstract
Allergy to shellfishes, including mollusks and crustaceans, is a growing health concern worldwide. Crustacean shellfish is one of the "Big Eight" allergens designated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is the major cause of food-induced anaphylaxis. Shrimp is one of the most consumed crustaceans triggering immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic reactions. Over the past decades, the allergen repertoire of shrimp has been unveiled based on conventional immunodetection methods. With the availability of genomic data for penaeid shrimp and other technological advancements like transcriptomic approaches, new shrimp allergens have been identified and directed new insights into their expression levels, cross-reactivity, and functional impact. In this review paper, we summarize the current knowledge on shrimp allergens, as well as allergens from other crustaceans and mollusks. Specific emphasis is put on the genomic information of the shrimp allergens, their protein characteristics, and cross-reactivity among shrimp and other organisms.

Abstract
Chitin/chitosan and collagen are two of the most important bioactive compounds, with applications in the pharmaceutical, veterinary, nutraceutical, cosmetic, biomaterials, and other industries. When extracted from non-edible parts of fish and shellfish, by-catches, and invasive species, their use contributes to a more sustainable and circular economy. The present article reviews the scientific knowledge and publication trends along the marine chitin/chitosan and collagen value chains and assesses how researchers, industry players, and end-users can bridge the gap between scientific understanding and industrial applications. Overall, research on chitin/chitosan remains focused on the compound itself rather than its market applications. Still, chitin/chitosan use is expected to increase in food and biomedical applications, while that of collagen is expected to increase in biomedical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and nutritional applications. Sustainable practices, such as the reuse of waste materials, contribute to strengthen both value chains; the identified weaknesses include the lack of studies considering market trends, social sustainability, and profitability, as well as insufficient examination of intellectual property rights. Government regulations, market demand, consumer preferences, technological advancements, environmental challenges, and legal frameworks play significant roles in shaping both value chains. Addressing these factors is crucial for seizing opportunities, fostering sustainability, complying with regulations, and maintaining competitiveness in these constantly evolving value chains.

Abstract
Fish farming plays a vital role in providing food, nutrition, and employment globally. However, this industry faces security challenges, necessitating the use of fungicides and preservatives, such as bronopol, to increase product yields. Bronopol (2‑bromo-2-nitropropan-1,3-diol; CAS:52-51-7) is widely used in various fields, including food production, cosmetics, and, more recently, aquaculture. Currently, there is a limited number of techniques available for detecting bronopol in aquaculture products. This is primarily due to bronopol's instability, susceptibility to degradation, and tendency to form precipitates that pose challenges in extraction from aquaculture products. For this issue, this study presents a comprehensive method for detecting bronopol content in aquaculture tissues using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC‒MS/MS). The methodology was optimized, involving extraction with Cu-Zn precipitant, cleanup using a small HLB column, separation on a T3 column, and gradient elution with water and acetonitrile mobile phases. The quantitative approach was employed without the use of an internal standard, following the external standard method. The spiked recoveries at 3 fortification levels (0.1, 0.2, and 1 mg/kg) ranged from 87.1 % to 108.1 % with relative standard deviations RSD ≤ 9.0 %. By applying this method to fresh fish, shrimp, crab, and shellfish samples from a local supermarket, no residues of bronopol were detected, ensuring the reliability of the results. The simplicity, rapidity, and high sensitivity of the method make it a suitable alternative to conventional techniques for bronopol detection. Moreover, the successful validation of the method's recovery and precision supports its potential application in monitoring and preventing the misuse of bronopol in aquaculture, thereby safeguarding aquaculture product quality and protecting public health.

Abstract
Meretrix lyrata which is under the family of Veneridae and under the order of Venerida, is a nutritionally and economically important edible mussel in Bangladesh. However, studies on species identification and nutritional value in M. lyrata are scarce. Therefore, a detailed investigation was conducted on (i) species identification of the common edible mussel through DNA-barcoding and morphometrics, (ii) reproductive features, such as size at sexual maturity, spawning, and peak-spawning seasons under different environmental factors, and (iii) nutritional status through proximate analysis of M. lyrata mussel collected from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The results indicated that the size at sexual maturity for M. lyrata was 4.2 cm and the spawning seasons were significantly affected by the dissolve oxygen and salinity. The study also demonstrated that the spawning of M. lyrata occurred from January to June and December while peak spawning season was May in the Bay of Bengal. The higher protein and moisture contents with lower fat in M. lyrata indicated that are value-added seafood with higher nutritional values for consumers.

Abstract
The Lianjiang coast in the East China Sea is a typical subtropical marine ecosystem, and shellfish cultivation occupies almost all of the available tidal flats. Many studies have investigated the effects of shellfish cultivation on benthic organisms and sediments, while the impact of shellfish cultivation on plankton ecosystems is still poorly understood. This study investigated the biogeographical patterns of microeukaryotic communities from Lianjiang coastal waters in four seasons using 18S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing. Microeukaryotes were mainly comprised of Dinoflagellata, Diatomea, Arthropoda, Ciliophora, Chlorophyta, Protalveolata, Cryptophyceae, and Ochrophyta, and presented significant differences in three habitats (the aquaculture area, confluent area, and offshore area) and four seasons. Similarity percentage analysis revealed that Paracalanus parvus, Heterocapsa rotundata, Bestiolina similis, and five additional key taxa contributed to spatio-temporal differences. Seasonal environmental and spatial factors explained 27.47% of microeukaryotic community variation on average, with 11.11% of the variation shared. Environmental variables, particularly depth, pH, and nitrite concentration, were strongly associated with the microeukaryotic community compositions. The neutral community model further demonstrated that stochastic processes were sufficient in shaping substantial variation in microeukaryotic communities across four seasons, which may reveal the remaining unexplained microeukaryotic community variation. We further divided four seasons into the aquaculture stages and non-aquaculture stages, and speculated that aquaculture activities may increase the dispersal limitation of microeukaryotes in coastal waters, especially for the big bodied-microbes like Arthropoda. The results provide a better understanding of the biogeographical patterns, processes, and mechanisms of microeukaryotic communities near shellfish cultivation.

Abstract
Drivers of marine disease outbreaks are poorly understood in spite of their growing impact. We present here results from a unique case study examining how cockles Cerastoderma edule have responded to the introduction of the novel protistan Marteilia cochillia, which led in 2012 to cockle fishery collapse in Galician rias. Based on intensive survey for eight years (2011-2019) of two affected shellfish beds, inner and outer in the Ría de Arousa, involving monthly evaluation of cockle health status and estimation of mortality, detailed information is provided of the declining impact of marteiliosis over a wild cockle population with evidence suggesting its increasing resistance. Disease dynamics involved an annual "breaking wave" of prevalence and subsequent cockle mass mortality, causing the near extinction of every recruited cohort. A shift in this pattern, from a severe epidemic towards an endemic profile, was observed in the inner shellfish bed since the cohort that was recruited in 2016, suggesting the hypothesis of increasing marteiliosis resistance through natural selection. Risk factors that may contribute to trigger marteiliosis outbreaks were analysed. Host age and sex did not influence susceptibility to marteiliosis. No clear relationships between environmental conditions (temperature, salinity and upwelling index) or cockle density and disease dynamics were found. Spatial differences in disease dynamics could be due to differences in the abundance of infective stages hypothetically linked to spatial differences in the population dynamics of a putative planktonic intermediate host. All these findings have potential implications for the management of diseased populations.

Abstract
Tropomyosin is the major and predominant allergen among shellfish. This study developed an ultrasensitive immuno-PCR method for the quantification of crustacean tropomyosin in foods. The method couples sandwich ELISA with the real-time PCR (rtPCR) amplification of marker DNAs. Monoclonal anti-TPM antibody was the capture antibody, polyclonal rabbit anti-shrimp tropomyosin antibody was the detection antibody, while natural shrimp tropomyosin served as the standard. A double-stranded amino-DNA was covalently conjugated to a secondary anti-rabbit antibody and subsequently amplified and quantified via rtPCR. The quantification sensitivity of immuno-PCR was 20-fold higher than analogous ELISA, with LOQ 19.8 pg/mL. The developed immuno-PCR method is highly specific for the detection of crustacean tropomyosin and is highly precise in a broad concentration range. Tropomyosin recovery in the spiked vegetable soup was 87.7-115.6%. Crustacean tropomyosin was also quantified in commercial food products. The reported immuno-PCR assay is the most sensitive method for the quantification of crustacean tropomyosin and is the first immuno-PCR-based assay for the quantification of food allergen and food protein in general. The described method could be easily adapted for the specific and ultrasensitive immuno-PCR-based detection of traces of any food allergen that is currently being quantified with ELISA, which is of critical importance for people with food allergies.

Abstract
Various marine aquaculture systems have different impacts on the environment, but few assessments were focused on the environmental impact by different systems in the same region. To study the effects of various aquaculture systems on phytoplankton community structure and water properties, 5 surveys were carried out in seaweed (Gracilaria lemaneiformis, GL), shellfish (Mytilus coruscus, MC) and cage fish (Larimichthys crocea, LC) mariculture areas in Dongji island, Zhejiang, China from June to September 2020. Significant differences were observed in some environmental parameters and phytoplankton communities among three aquaculture systems. The dissolved oxygen concentrations and Secchi depth in the surface waters in GL area were relatively higher than in the blank and other areas. As for nutrients concentration, LC and MC areas had higher concentrations than blank area, while GL area was the lowest. Though Chlorophyll-a concentration displayed fluctuations, relatively lower concentrations were found in GL area. Shannon diversity index was found to be relatively constant and higher in GL area. The Non-metric multidimensional scaling results revealed that phytoplankton composition had a distinct pattern among sampling times. The correlations and Redundancy analysis showed that total nitrogen, salinity and transparency were primary environmental factors associated with phytoplankton composition. Our study confirmed that different marine aquaculture systems can cause environmental fluctuations. Among the three systems, seaweed cultivation can bring multiple positive effects by improving surrounding water quality and increasing the phytoplankton composition. G. lemaneiformis culture in summer has great positive impact on seawater environment as it can maintain the ecological balance and reduce the risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs), and therefore, it is strongly recommended more G. lemaneiformis cultivation in this region in summer.

Certain species of marine microalgae produce potent biotoxins that pose a risk to human health if contaminated seafood is consumed, particularly filter feeding bivalve shellfish. In regions where this is likely to occur water and seafood produce are regularly monitored for the presence of harmful algal cells and their associated toxins, but the current approach is flawed by a lengthy delay before results are available to local authorities. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) can be used to measure phytoplankton DNA sequences in a shorter timeframe, however it is not currently used in official testing practices. In this study, samples were collected almost weekly over six months from three sites within a known HAB hotspot, St Austell Bay in Cornwall, England. The abundance of algal cells in water was measured using microscopy and qPCR, and lipophilic toxins were quantified in mussel flesh using LC-MS/MS, focusing on the okadaic acid group. An increase in algal cell abundance occurred alongside an increase in the concentration of okadaic acid group toxins in mussel tissue at all three study sites, during September and October 2021. This event corresponded to an increase in the measured levels of Dinophysis accuminata DNA, measured using qPCR. In the following spring, the qPCR detected an increase in D. accuminata DNA levels in water samples, which was not detected by microscopy. Harmful algal species belonging to Alexandrium spp. and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were also measured using qPCR, finding a similar increase in abundance in Autumn and Spring. The results are discussed with consideration of the potential merits and limitations of the qPCR technique versus conventional microscopy analysis, and its potential future role in phytoplankton surveillance under the Official Controls Regulations pertaining to shellfish.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate Vibrio parahaemolyticus occurrences in bivalve molluscs harvested from Sardinian coastal environments between 2013 and 2015. The prevalence of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus isolates is based on the detection of the two major virulence genes thermostable direct hemolysin (tdh) and thermolabile hemolysin (trh) To assess changes between 2011 and 2018 in the prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in bivalve molluscs, we compared our results with those of previous investigations. In total, 2,933 samples were collected: 1,079 in 2013, 1,288 in 2014, and 566 in 2015. The mean prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in shellfish was 3.5% in 2013, 1.7% in 2014, and 3.5% in 2015. The highest percentage of positive samples in 2013 and 2014 was observed in clams (3.5% and 2.7%, respectively), whereas in 2015, it was reported in oysters (15.1%). By comparing the sampling period of 2011-2014 with that of 2015-2018, an increase in the prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus was observed in shellfish (p < 0.05). In parallel, 208 potentially enteropathogenic V. parahaemolyticus strains were identified through the years 2011-2018 and, in particular, 10 trh+ and six tdh+ isolates. Our present study provides information regarding trends of V. parahaemolyticus occurrences in bivalve molluscs harvested from Sardinian coastal environments between 2011 and 2018 suggesting that the prevalence varies depending on the sampling period and shellfish species.

Abstract
Algal toxins are involved in the mortality and/or illness of marine organisms via consumption of contaminated prey, or upon direct exposure to toxic cells. In this study, the presence of potentially toxic microalgal cells was investigated within the digestive tract contents of a threatened species of green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Additionally, lipophilic toxins were determined by LC-MS/MS in tissue samples (liver, stomach and/or intestine) of selected animals (n = 39 individuals) found dead-stranded in southern Brazil, from winter/2015 to autumn/2016. Thirteen potentially toxic species of microalgae (both benthic and planktonic), including seven dinoflagellates, six cyanobacteria and one diatom, were found in the digestive tract contents of green turtles. Among them, dinoflagellates belonging to the Dinophysis acuminata species complex were the most frequent (36%) and abundant (maximum average abundance of 566 cells g-1 in spring/2015). Moreover, 23% of the examined sea turtles exhibited detectable levels of the diarrhetic shellfish toxin okadaic acid (OA) in washed digestive tissues. Seven individuals accumulated OA in their intestines (max. 24.1 ng g-1) and two in the stomachs (max. 7.4 ng g-1). Toxin levels in the tissues were directly and significantly (r = 0.70, p < 0.025) associated with the cell abundance of OA-producing D. acuminata and Prorocentrum lima species complexes within the digestive contents of green turtles. Although OA concentrations were relatively low, possible chronic exposure might deteriorate general health conditions of exposed sea turtles, increasing the risk for diseases. Okadaic acid has been regarded as a tumor-promoting compound and an environmental co-factor in the incidence of fibropapillomatosis, a frequent disease in juvenile green turtles inhabiting this geographic region. Even though, only one green turtle containing OA in the digestive tissues (out of six examined) also presented fibropapillomatosis in this study. Notwithstanding, sea turtles are sentinels of ocean health. Monitoring the accumulation of algal toxins and their negative effects on these organisms contributes to conserving biodiversity and marine habitats.

Abstract
Large-scale assessments of fish and shellfish populations may be valuable for identifying the impacts of fishing pressure on stocks, but they are rarely possible due to a lack of long-term datasets. In this study, a two-part mixed-effect model for lognormal data was used to obtain historical abundance indices for 16 priority fish and shellfish stocks in the Azores region derived from catch per unit effort (kg per day at sea per vessel) and landing per unit effort (kg per landing per vessel). This data was obtained over the past 30 years under the EC Data Collection Framework and, in addition to information on effort and catch, included details about the fishing operation such as quarter, vessel length and fishing gear. This information was analysed to investigate how abundance indices changed over the years, verify if trends from different data sources were different and, if possible, relate these results to the population and fishery dynamics. The abundance indices derived from both datasets were generally in agreement with each other. Declining trends have been observed for some commercially important species, such as forkbeard Phycis phycis, European conger Conger conger, parrotfish Sparisoma cretense, red scorpionfish Scorpaena scrofa, offshore rockfish Pontinus kuhlii, common spiny lobster Palinurus elephas, splendid alfonsino Beryx splendens and alfonsino B. decadactylus, which is concerning because they are particularly slow-growing, long-lived and have low natural mortality, making them susceptible to overfishing. The results of this study are very important and should help future stock assessment and management initiatives.

Abstract
Inflammation is a defense mechanism of the body in response to harmful stimuli such as pathogens, damaged cells, toxic compounds or radiation. However, chronic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases. Multiple anti-inflammatory drugs are currently available for the treatment of inflammation, but all exhibit less efficacy. This drives the search for new anti-inflammatory compounds focusing on natural resources. Marine organisms produce a broad spectrum of bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory activities. Several are considered as lead compounds for development into drugs. Anti-inflammatory compounds have been extracted from algae, corals, seaweeds and other marine organisms. We previously reviewed anti-inflammatory compounds, as well as crude extracts isolated from echinoderms such as sea cucumbers, sea urchins and starfish. In the present review, we evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of compounds from other marine organisms, including macroalgae (seaweeds), marine angiosperms (seagrasses), medusozoa (jellyfish), bryozoans (moss animals), mollusks (shellfish) and peanut worms. We also present a review of the molecular mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory activity of these compounds. Our objective in this review is to provide an overview of the current state of research on anti-inflammatory compounds from marine sources and the prospects for their translation into novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract
Puget Sound (Washington, USA) is a large estuary, known for its profitable shellfish aquaculture industry. However, in the past decade, scientists have observed strong acidification, hypoxia, and temperature anomalies in Puget Sound. These co-occurring environmental stressors are a threat to marine ecosystems and shellfish aquaculture. Our research assesses how environmental variability in Puget Sound impacts two ecologically and economically important bivalves, the purple-hinge rock scallop (Crassodoma gigantea) and Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis). Our study examines the effect of depth and seasonality on the physiology of these two important bivalves to gain insight into ideal grow-out conditions in an aquaculture setting, improving the yield and quality of this sustainable protein source. To do this, we used Hood Canal (located in Puget Sound) as a natural multiple-stressor laboratory, which allowed us to study acclimatization capacity of shellfish in their natural habitat and provide the aquaculture industry information about differences in growth rate, shell strength, and nutritional sources across depths and seasons. Bivalves were outplanted at two depths (5 and 30 m) and collected after 3.5 and 7.5 months. To maximize mussel and scallop growth potential in an aquaculture setting, our results suggest outplanting at 5 m depth, with more favorable oxygen and pH levels. Mussel shell integrity can be improved by placing out at 5 m, regardless of season, however, there were no notable differences in shell strength between depths in scallops. For both species, δ13C values were lowest at 5 m in the winter and δ15N was highest at 30 m regardless of season. Puget Sound's combination of naturally and anthropogenically acidified conditions is already proving to be a challenge for shellfish farmers. Our study provides crucial information to farmers to optimize aquaculture grow-out as we begin to navigate the impacts of climate change.

Abstract
Solenaia oleivora, a valuable and rare bivalve endemic to China, is becoming a threatened freshwater sepcies. However, the lack of research on its genome and immune system will hinder advances in its conservation and artificial breeding. In this study, we obtained the full-length transcriptome of S. oleivora using PacBio sequencing. A total of 21,415 transcripts with an average length of 1,726 bp were generated. Among these transcripts, 12,084 had coding sequences (CDS), of which 8,639 were annotated in 6 databases. The structure analysis identified 625 transcript factors (TFs), 8,005 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and 5,288 simple sequences repeat (SSRs). Meanwhile, massive immune genes were identified from the transcriptome of S. oleivora. In terms of non-self-identification, 97 transcripts of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) were discovered, including peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs), gram-negative bacteria binding proteins (GNBPs), toll-like receptors (TLRs), scavenger receptors (SRs), galectins (GALs), C-type lectins (CLTs), and fibrinogen-related protein (FREPs). For pathogen elimination, 7 transcripts related to antimicrobial peptides, lysozymes, and lysosomal enzymes were identified. Moreover, 33 complement-associated transcripts were found. This study enriched the genome resources of S. oleivora and provided new insights for the study of the immune system of S. oleivora.

Abstract
AIMS Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important foodborne pathogen worldwide, which can cause gastroenteritis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of quorum sensing system LuxS/AI-2-related gene luxS on the biological characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of V. parahaemolyticus Vp2015094 from shellfish, which carried a multi-antimicrobial-resistant plasmid. METHODS AND RESULTS The critical gene luxS related to the synthesis of AI-2 in V. parahaemolyticus Vp2015094 was knocked out by homologous recombination with suicide plasmid. The effect of luxS on the biological characteristics of V. parahaemolyticus was determined by comparing the growth, AI-2 activity, motility, biofilm formation ability, and antibiotic resistance between the wildtype strain and the luxS deletion mutant. Compared with wildtype strain, the production of AI-2, the motility and biofilm formation ability, antimicrobial resistance, and conjugation frequency of luxS deletion mutant strain were decreased. The transcriptome sequencing showed that the transcriptional levels of many genes related to motility, biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, and conjugation were significantly downregulated after luxS deletion. CONCLUSIONS Quorum sensing system LuxS/AI-2-related gene luxS in V. parahaemolyticus Vp2015094 played an important role in growth characteristics, biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, and resistance genes' transfer.

Abstract
Shellfish accumulate microalgal toxins, which can make them unsafe for human consumption. In France, in accordance with EU regulations, three groups of marine toxins are currently under official monitoring: lipophilic toxins, saxitoxins, and domoic acid. Other unregulated toxin groups are also present in European shellfish, including emerging lipophilic and hydrophilic marine toxins (e.g., pinnatoxins, brevetoxins) and the neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). To acquire data on emerging toxins in France, the monitoring program EMERGTOX was set up along the French coasts in 2018. Three new broad-spectrum LC-MS/MS methods were developed to quantify regulated and unregulated lipophilic and hydrophilic toxins and the BMAA group in shellfish (bivalve mollusks and gastropods). A single-laboratory validation of each of these methods was performed. Additionally, these specific, reliable, and sensitive operating procedures allowed the detection of groups of EU unregulated toxins in shellfish samples from French coasts: spirolides (SPX-13-DesMeC, SPX-DesMeD), pinnatoxins (PnTX-G, PnTX-A), gymnodimines (GYM-A), brevetoxins (BTX-2, BTX-3), microcystins (dmMC-RR, MC-RR), anatoxin, cylindrospermopsin and BMAA/DAB. Here, we present essentially the results of the unregulated toxins obtained from the French EMERGTOX monitoring plan during the past five years (2018-2022). Based on our findings, we outline future needs for monitoring to protect consumers from emerging unregulated toxins.

Abstract
Shellfish is a leading cause of food allergy and anaphylaxis worldwide. Recent advances in molecular characterization have led to a better understanding of the allergen profile. High sequence homology between shellfish species and between shellfish and house dust mites leads to a high serological cross-reactivity, which does not accurately correlate with clinical cross-reactions. Clinical manifestations are immediate and the predominance of perioral symptoms is a typical feature of shellfish allergy. Diagnosis, as for other food allergies, is based on SPTs and specific IgE, while the gold standard is DBPCFC. Cross-reactivity between shellfish is common and therefore, it is mandatory to avoid all shellfish. New immunotherapeutic strategies based on hypoallergens and other innovative approaches represent the new frontiers for desensitization.

Abstract
Paralytic shellfish poisoning is a worldwide problem induced by shellfish contaminated with paralytic shellfish toxins. To protect human health, a regulatory limit for these toxins in shellfish flesh has been adopted by many countries. In a recent study, mice were dosed with saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin mixtures daily for 28 days showing toxicity at low concentrations, which appeared to be at odds with other work. To further investigate this reported toxicity, we dosed groups of mice with saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin mixtures daily for 21 days. In contrast to the previous study, no effects on mouse bodyweight, food consumption, heart rate, blood pressure, grip strength, blood chemistry or hematology were observed. Furthermore, no histological findings were associated with dosing in this trial. The dose rates in this study were 2.6, 3.8 and 4.9 times greater, respectively, than the highest dose of the previous study. As rapid mortality in three out of five mice was observed in the previous study, the deaths are likely to be due to the methodology used rather than the shellfish toxins. To convert animal data to that used in a human risk assessment, a 100-fold safety factor is required. After applying this safety factor, the dose rates used in the current study were 3.5, 5.0 and 6.5 times greater, respectively, than the acute reference dose for each toxin type set by the European Union. Furthermore, it has previously been proposed that tetrodotoxin be included in the paralytic shellfish poisoning suite of toxins. If this were done, the highest dose rate used in this study would be 13 times the acute reference dose. This study suggests that the previous 28-day trial was flawed and that the current paralytic shellfish toxin regulatory limit is fit for purpose. An additional study, feeding mice a diet laced with the test compounds at higher concentrations than those of the current experiment, would be required to comment on whether the current paralytic shellfish toxin regulatory limit should be modified.

Abstract
Fast growing Kariba weed causes major problems and pollution on freshwater and shellfish aquaculture systems by interfering with nutrient uptake of crops, restricting sunlight penetration, and decreasing water quality due to massive biomass of Kariba weed remnants. Solvothermal liquefaction is considered an emerging thermochemical technique to convert waste into high yield of value-added products. Solvothermal liquefaction (STL) of Kariba weed as an emerging contaminant was performed to investigate the effects of different types of solvents (ethanol and methanol) and Kariba weed mass loadings (2.5-10 % w/v) on treating and reducing the weed via conversion into potentially useful crude oil product and char. Up to 92.53 % of Kariba weed has been reduced via this technique. The optimal conditions for crude oil production were found to be at 5 % w/v of mass loading in methanol medium, resulting in a high heating value (HHV) of 34.66 MJ/kg and yield of 20.86 wt%, whereas the biochar production was found to be optimum at 7.5 % w/v of mass loading in methanol medium, resulting in 29.92 MJ/kg of HHV and 25.38 wt% of yield. The crude oil consisted of beneficial chemical compounds for biofuel production such as hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester (65.02 peak area %) and the biochar showed high carbon content (72.83 %). In conclusion, STL as a remediation for emerging Kariba weed is a feasible process for shellfish aquaculture waste treatment and biofuels production.
