Thermal hydrolysis alleviates polyethylene microplastic-induced stress in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Microplastics are known to negatively affect anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge. However, whether thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment alters the impact of microplastics on sludge AD remains unknown. Herein, the effect of TH on the impact of polyethylene (PE) microplastics in sludge AD was investigated. The results showed that the inhibition of methane production by PE at 100 particles/g total solids (TS) was reduced by 31.4% from 12.1% to 8.3% after TH at 170 °C for 30 min. Mechanism analysis indicated TH reduced the potential for reactive oxygen species production induced by PE, resulting in a 29.1 ± 5.5% reduction in cell viability loss. In addition, additive leaching increased as a result of rapid aging of PE microplastics by TH. Acetyl tri-n-butyl citrate (ATBC) release from PE with 10 and 100 particles/g TS increased 11.5-fold and 8.6-fold after TH to 68.2 ± 5.5 μg/L and 124.0 ± 5.1 μg/L, respectively. ATBC at 124.0 μg/L increased methane production by 21.4%. The released ATBC enriched SBR1031 and Euryarchaeota, which facilitate the degradation of proteins and promote methane production. This study reveals the overestimated impact of PE microplastics in sludge AD and provides new insights into the PE microplastics-induced impact in practical sludge treatment and anaerobic biological processes.

Applications of charcoal, activated charcoal, and biochar in aquaculture - A review

Environmental pollution and poor feed quality pose potential threats to aquatic organisms and human health, representing challenges for the aquaculture industry. In light of the rising demand for aquatic organisms, there is an urgent need to improve aquacultural production and protect the products from contamination. Char, a carbonaceous material derived through pyrolysis of organic carbon-rich biomass, has proven advantages in soil, air, and water remediation. While char's performance and the associated physicochemical characteristics depend strongly on the pyrolysis temperature, residence time, and feedstock type, char generally shows advantages in pollutant removal from the environment and livestock. This enables it to enhance the health and growth performance of livestock. Given the growing attention to char application in aquaculture in recent years, this review summarises major studies on three applications: aquacultural water treatment, sediment remediation, and char-feed supplement. Most of these studies have demonstrated char's positive effects on pollutant removal from organisms and aquacultural environments. Moreover, adopting char as fish feed can improve fish growth performance and the condition of their intestinal villi. However, due to insufficient literature, further investigation is needed into the mechanistic aspects of pollutants removal in aquatic organisms by char as a feed additive, such as the transportation of char inside aquatic organisms, the positive and negative effects of char on these products, and how char alters the gut microbiota community of these products. This paper presents an overview of the current application of char in aquaculture and highlights the research areas that require further investigation to enrich future studies.

Thermochemical conversion of silkworm by-product into syngas

This study explored the valorisation of silkworm by-product, a major by-product of the silk industry (sericulture), which amounts to 16 million tonnes annually. The focus was on transforming waste into energy resources through pyrolysis under CO2 conditions. In one-stage pyrolysis, the evolution of syngas under N2 was found to be comparable to that under CO2. A notable allocation of carbon to biocrude rather than syngas was observed. The two-stage pyrolysis resulted in increased syngas production. However, achieving a homogeneous reaction between CO2 and the volatiles liberated from silkworm byproduct proved challenging. Indeed, the reaction kinetics governing CO2 reactivity was not fast although the temperature windows of the reaction were aligned in the two-stage pyrolysis. To address this issue, pyrolysis was performed using a Ni-based catalyst to expedite the reaction kinetics. Consequently, syngas formation, particularly CO formation, was significantly enhanced under CO2 conditions compared to that under N2 conditions. The syngas yield under CO2 was 36.42 wt% which was 2-fold higher than that of N2. This suggested the potential of CO2 altering the carbon distribution from biocrude to syngas. This strategy would contribute to the establishment of sustainable production of silk by converting sericulture by-product into energy/chemical resources.

Direct conversion of apricot seeds into biodiesel

Using edible lipids for biodiesel production has been criticized, causing biodiesel production from inedible food resources to be desirable. Lipid extraction must be prioritized to produce biodiesel using an acid/base-catalyzed transesterification process, but this conversion process suffers from technical reliability. Therefore, this study introduced non-catalytic conversion of oil-bearing biomass into biodiesel. Apricot seeds were used as a model compound (oil content 44.3 wt%). The non-catalytic transesterification of apricot seed oil recovered 98.28 wt% biodiesel at 360 °C for 1 min, while alkali-catalysis of apricot seed oil recovered 91.84 wt% at 63 °C for 60 min. The direct conversion of apricot seeds into biodiesel was attempted. The trends in the yields of biodiesel from apricot seeds and seed oil obtained by non-catalytic transesterification as a function of reaction temperature were similar. The yield of biodiesel from apricot seed was 43.06 wt%, suggesting that 97.20 wt% of lipids were converted into biodiesel.

Hepatotoxicity evaluations of different surface charged carbon quantum dots in vivo and in vitro

Recently, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have become popular because of their simple synthesis and potential applications. Although CQDs have high biocompatibility, their biotoxicity must be verified to reduce the possible risks associated with large-scale application. In this study, the hepatotoxicity of three CQD types, namely diammonium citrate (AC)-based (CQDs-AC), spermidine trihydrochloride (Spd)-based (CQDs-Spd), and AC- and Spd-based CQDs (CQDs-AC/Spd), were evaluated in vivo and in vitro. It was observed in vivo that CQDs-Spd and CQDs-AC/Spd, but not CQDs-AC, caused histopathological damage, including liver steatosis and mild mixed inflammatory cell infiltration; however, reduced liver function was only observed in CQD-Spd-treated mice. The in vitro results revealed that only CQDs-Spd significantly decreased the number of viable HepG2 cells (NADH depletion) and induced oxidative stress (heme oxygenase-1 activation) after 24 h of exposure, which promoted inflammatory factor secretion (NF-κB activation). Additionally, decreasing zonula occludens-2 and α1-antitrypsin protein expression in HepG2 cells suggested that CQD-Spd exposure increases the risk of liver diseases. Our results revealed that CQDs-Spd had greater hepatotoxic potential than CQDs-AC and CQDs-AC/Spd, which might be attributable to their high positive surface charge. Overall, the risk of CQD-induced hepatotoxic risk must be considered when applying positively charged CQDs.

Valorizing spent mushroom substrate into syngas by the thermo-chemical process

This study investigated the conversion of agricultural biomass waste (specifically, spent mushroom substrate) into syngas via pyrolysis. Carbon dioxide was used to provide a green/sustainable feature in the pyrolysis process. All the experimental data highlight the mechanistic role of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the process, demonstrated by the enhanced carbon monoxide (CO) yield from pyrolysis under CO2. Carbon dioxide was indeed reactive at ≥ 500 ˚C. Carbon dioxide was reduced and subsequently oxidized volatiles stemming from the thermolysis of spent mushroom substrate via the gas-phase reaction, thereby resulting in the enhanced formation of CO. Carbon dioxide radically diverted the carbon distribution patterns of the pyrogenic products, as more carbon in the oil was allocated to syngas by the gas-phase reaction of volatiles and CO2. To enhance the mechanistic role of CO2, a Ni-based catalyst was added to the pyrolysis process, which greatly accelerated the gas-phase reaction of volatiles and CO2.

Hollow-Structured N-doped carbon-embedded CoFe NanoAlloy for boosting activation of Monopersulfate: Engineered interface and heteroatom Doping-Induced enhancements

While transition metals are useful for activating monopersulfate (MPS) to degrade contaminants, bimetallic alloys exhibit stronger catalytic activities owing to several favorable effects. Therefore, even though Co is an efficient metal for MPS activation, CoFe alloys are even more promising heterogeneous catalysts for MPS activation. Immobilization/embedment of CoFe alloy nanoparticles (NPs) onto hetero-atom-doped carbon matrices appears as a practical strategy for evenly dispersing CoFe NPs and enhancing catalytic activities via interfacial synergies between CoFe and carbon. Herein, N-doped carbon-embedded CoFe alloy (NCCF) is fabricated here to exhibit a unique hollow-engineered nanostructure and the composition of CoFe alloy by using Co-ZIF as a precursor after the facile etching and Fe doping. The Fe dopant embeds CoFe alloy NPs into the hollow-structured N-doped carbon substrate, enabling NCCF to possess the higher mesoscale porosity, active N species as well as more superior electrochemical properties than its analogue without Fe dopants, carbon matrix-supported cobalt (NCCo). Thus, NCCF exhibits a considerably larger activity than NCCo and the benchmark catalyst, Co3O4 NP, for MPS activation to degrade an environmental hormone, dihydroxydiphenyl ketone (DHPK). Besides, NCCF + MPS shows an even lower activation energy for DHPK degradation than literatures, and retains its high efficiency for eliminating DHPK in different water media. DHPK degradation pathway and ecotoxicity assessment are unraveled based on the insights from the computational chemistry, demonstrating that DHPK degradation by NCCF + MPS did not result in the formation of toxic and highly toxic by-products. These features make NCCF a promising heterogeneous catalyst for MPS activation to degrade DHPK.

Sustainable ethylene production: Recovery from plastic waste via thermochemical processes

The concept of monomer recovery from plastic waste has recently gained broad interest in industry as a powerful strategy to reduce the environmental impacts of chemical production and plastic waste pollution. Herein, we focus on the ethylene recovery from plastic waste via thermochemical pathways, such as pyrolysis, gasification, and steam cracking of pyrolysis oil derived from plastic waste. Ethylene recovery performance of different thermochemical conversion processes is evaluated and compared with respect to plastic waste types, process types, ethylene recovery yields, and process operating conditions. Based on the analysis of available data in earlier literature, future research is recommended to further enhance the viability of the thermochemical ethylene recovery technologies. This review is expected to offer a meaningful guideline on developing efficient platforms for the value-added monomer recovery from plastic waste through thermochemical conversion routes. It is also hoped that this review serves as a preliminary step to encourage the widespread adoption of thermochemical conversion-based ethylene recovery from plastic waste by industries.

Species identification, reproductive biology, and nutritional value of marine shellfish (Meretrix lyrata) in the Bay of Bengal

Meretrix lyrata which is under the family of Veneridae and under the order of Venerida, is a nutritionally and economically important edible mussel in Bangladesh. However, studies on species identification and nutritional value in M. lyrata are scarce. Therefore, a detailed investigation was conducted on (i) species identification of the common edible mussel through DNA-barcoding and morphometrics, (ii) reproductive features, such as size at sexual maturity, spawning, and peak-spawning seasons under different environmental factors, and (iii) nutritional status through proximate analysis of M. lyrata mussel collected from the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The results indicated that the size at sexual maturity for M. lyrata was 4.2 cm and the spawning seasons were significantly affected by the dissolve oxygen and salinity. The study also demonstrated that the spawning of M. lyrata occurred from January to June and December while peak spawning season was May in the Bay of Bengal. The higher protein and moisture contents with lower fat in M. lyrata indicated that are value-added seafood with higher nutritional values for consumers.

Strategic use of crop residue biochars for removal of hazardous compounds in wastewater

Crop residues are affordable lignocellulosic waste in the world, and a large portion of the waste has been burned, releasing toxic pollutants into the environment. Since the crop residue is a carbon and ingredient rich material, it can be strategically used as a sorptive material for (in)organic pollutants in the wastewater after thermo-chemical valorization (i.e., biochar production). In this review, applications of crop residue biochars to adsorption of non-degradable synthetic dyes, antibiotics, herbicides, and inorganic heavy metals in wastewater were discussed. Properties (porosity, functional groups, heteroatom, and metal(oxide)s, etc.) and adsorption capacity relationships were comprehensively reviewed. The current challenges of crop residue biochars and guidelines for development of efficient adsorbents were also provided. In the last part, the future research directions for practical applications of the crop residue biochars in wastewater treatment plants have been suggested.

Evaluation of the pulmonary toxicity of PSNPs using a Transwell-based normal human bronchial epithelial cell culture system

To reduce the nanoplastics (NPs) toxicity assessment error, we established a Transwell-based bronchial epithelial cell exposure system to assess the pulmonary toxicity of polystyrene NPs (PSNPs). Transwell exposure system was more sensitive than submerged culture for toxicity detection of PSNPs. PSNPs adhered to the BEAS-2B cell surface, were ingested by the cell, and accumulated in the cytoplasm. PSNPs induced oxidative stress and inhibited cell growth through apoptosis and autophagy. A noncytotoxic dose of PSNPs (1 ng/cm2) increased the expression levels of inflammatory factors (ROCK-1, NF-κB, NLRP3, ICAM-1, etc) in BEAS-2B cells, whereas a cytotoxic dose (1000 ng/cm2) induced apoptosis and autophagy, which might inhibit the activation of ROCK-1 and contribute to reducing inflammation. In addition, the noncytotoxic dose increased the expression levels of zonula occludens-2 (ZO-2) and α1-antitrypsin (α-AT) proteins in BEAS-2B cells. Therefore, in response to PSNP exposure, a compensatory increase in the activities of inflammatory factors, ZO-2, and α-AT may be triggered at low doses as a mechanism to preserve the survival of BEAS-2B cells. In contrast, exposure to a high dose of PSNPs elicits a noncompensatory response in BEAS-2B cells. Overall, these findings suggest that PSNPs may be harmful to human pulmonary health even at an ultralow concentration.

Occurrences, sources, fate and impacts of plastic on aquatic organisms and human health in global perspectives: What Bangladesh can do in future?

Bangladesh is not an exception to the growing global environmental problem of plastic pollution. Plastics have been deemed a blessing for today's world thanks to their inexpensive production costs, low weight, toughness, and flexibility, but poor biodegradability and massive misuse of plastics are to blame for widespread contamination of the environmental components. Plastic as well as microplastic pollution and its adverse consequences have attracted significant investigative attention all over the world. Plastic pollution is a rising concern in Bangladesh, but scientific studies, data, and related information are very scarce in numerous areas of the plastic pollution problem. The current study examined the effects of plastic and microplastic pollution on the environment and human health, and it examined Bangladesh's existing knowledge of plastic pollution in aquatic ecosystems in light of the rapidly expanding international research in this field. We also made an effort to investigate the current shortcomings in Bangladesh's assessment of plastic pollution. This study proposed several management approaches to the persistent plastic pollution problem by analyzing studies from industrialized and emerging countries. Finally, this work pushed investigators to investigate Bangladesh's plastic contamination thoroughly and develop guidelines and policies to address the issue.

Applications of agricultural residue biochars to removal of toxic gases emitted from chemical plants: A review

Crop residues are representative agricultural waste materials, massively generated in the world. However, a large fraction of them is currently being wasted, though they have a high potential to be used as a value-added carbon-rich material. Also, the applications of carbon-rich materials from agricultural waste to industries can have economic benefit because waste-derived carbon materials are considered inexpensive waste materials. In this review, valorization methods for crop residues as carbon-rich materials (i.e., biochars) and their applications to industrial toxic gas removals are discussed. Applications of crop residue biochars to toxic gas removal can have significant environmental benefits and economic feasibility. As such, this review discussed the technical advantages of the use of crop residue biochars as adsorbents for hazardous gaseous pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) stemmed from combustion of fossil fuels and the different refinery processes. Also, the practical benefits from the activation methods in line with the biochar properties were comprehensively discussed. The relationships between the physico-chemical properties of biochars and the removal mechanisms of gaseous pollutants (H₂S, SO₂, Hg⁰, and CO₂) on biochars were also highlighted in this review study. Porosity controls using physical and chemical activations along with the addition of specific functional groups and metals on biochars have significantly contributed to the enhancement of flue gas adsorption. The adsorption capacity of biochar for each toxic chemical was in the range of 46-76 mg g^-1 for H₂S, 40-182 mg g^-1 for SO₂, 80-952 μg g^-1 for Hg⁰, and 82-308 mg g^-1 CO₂, respectively. This helps to find suitable activation methods for adsorption of the target pollutants. In the last part, the benefits from the use of biochars and the research directions were prospectively provided to make crop residue biochars more practical materials in adsorption of pollutant gases.

Polycarbonate microplastics induce oxidative stress in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge by leaching bisphenol A

Polycarbonate (PC) microplastics are frequently detected in waste activated sludge. However, understanding the potential impact of PC microplastics on biological sludge treatment remains challenging. By tracking the changes in methane production under different concentrations of PC microplastics, a dose-dependent effect of PC microplastics on anaerobic digestion of sludge was observed. PC microplastics at 10-60 particles/g total solids (TS) improved methane production by up to 24.7 ± 0.1 % (at 30 particles/g TS), while 200 particles/g TS PC microplastics reduced methane production by 8.09 ± 0.1 %. Bisphenol A (BPA) leached from 30 particles/g TS PC microplastics (1.26 ± 0.18 mg/L) down-regulated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, thereby enhancing enzyme activity, biomass viability, and abundance of methanogenic (Methanobacterium sp. and Methanosarcina sp.), ultimately boosting methane production. Conversely, BPA leached from 200 particles/g TS PC microplastics (4.02 ± 0.15 mg/L) stimulated ROS production, resulting in decreased biomass viability and even apoptosis. Modulation of oxidative stress by leaching monomeric BPA is an underappreciated transformative mechanism for improving the mastery of the potential behavior of microplastics in biological sludge treatment.

Templating agent-mediated Cobalt oxide encapsulated in Mesoporous silica as an efficient oxone activator for elimination of toxic anionic azo dye in water: Mechanistic and DFT-assisted investigations

While Azorubin S (AZRS) is extensively used as a reddish anionic azo dye for textiles and an alimentary colorant in food, AZRS is mutagenic/carcinogenic, and it shall be removed from dye-containing wastewaters. In view of advantages of SO₄^•--related chemical oxidation technology, oxone (KHSO₅) would an ideal source of SO₄^•- for degrading AZRS, and heterogeneous Co₃O₄-based catalysts is required and shall be developed for activating oxone. Herein, a facile protocol is proposed for fabricating mesoporous silica (MS)-confined Co₃O₄ by a templating agent-mediated dry-grinding procedure. As the templating agent retained inside the ordered pores of MS (before calcination) would facilitate insertion and dispersion of Co ions into pores, the resulting Co₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) would be grown and confined within the pores of MS after calcination, affording Co@MS. On the contrary, another analogue, Co/MS, is also prepared using the similar protocol without the templating agent-mediated introduction of Co, but Co₃O₄ NPs seriously aggregate as clusters on MS. Therefore, Co@MS outperforms Co/MS for activating oxone to eliminate AZRS. Co@MS shows a noticeably lower activation energy of AZRS elimination than the existing catalysts, revealing its advantage over the reported catalysts. Moreover, the mechanistic investigation of AZRS elimination by Co@MS-activated oxone has been also elucidated for identifying the presence of SO₄^•‒, ^•OH, and ¹O₂ in AZRS degradation using scavengers, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and semi-quantification. The AZRS decomposition pathway is also investigated and unveiled in details via the DFT calculation. These results validate that Co@MS appears as a superior catalyst of oxone activation for AZRS degradation.

Amine/hydrazone functionalized Cd(II)/Zn(II) metal-organic framework for ultrafast sensitive detection of hazardous 2,4,6-trinitrophenol in water

Amine/hydrazone functionalized dual ligand Cd(II)/Zn(II) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) denoted as CdMOF- and ZnMOF-NH₂, respectively were synthesized via a simple conventional high-yield reflux method using low-cost and readily available starting materials, i.e., a Schiff base linker, 4-pyridylcarboxaldehydeisonicotinoylhydrazone (L₁) and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (H₂ata) linker. Crystallographic and thermogravimetric studies confirmed the formation of MOFs with good crystallinity and thermal stability. Photoluminescence studies point out that both MOFs can be used efficiently for fast sensing of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in water with noticeable turn-off quenching response. Their limits of detection (LODs) for TNP were 7 ppb and 10 ppb, respectively with enhanced selectivity toward TNP (over other nitro explosives) as verified by competitive nitro explosive tests. Density functional theory calculations and spectral overlap were used to assess the sensing mechanism. These MOF-based fluorescent sensing systems for TNP are demonstrated to have easy recoverability and high sensitivity.

Isotherm models for adsorption of heavy metals from water - A review

Adsorption is a widely used technology for removing and separating heavy metal from water, attributed to its eco-friendly, cost-effective, and high efficiency. Adsorption isotherm modeling has been used for many years to predict the adsorption equilibrium mechanism, adsorption capacity, and the inherent characteristics of the adsorption process, all of which are substantial in evaluating the performance of adsorbents. This review summarizes the development history, fundamental characteristics, and mathematical derivations of various isotherm models, along with their applicable conditions and application scenarios in heavy metal adsorption. The latest progress in applying isotherm models with a one-parameter, two-parameter, and three-parameter in heavy metal adsorption using carbon-based materials, which has gained much attention in recent years as low-cost adsorbents, is critically reviewed and discussed. Several experimental factors affecting the adsorption equilibrium, such as solution pH, temperature, ionic strength, adsorbent dose, and initial heavy metal concentration, are briefly discussed. The criteria for selecting the optimum isotherm for heavy metal adsorption are proposed by comparing various adsorption models and analyzing mathematical error functions. Finally, the relative performance of different isotherm models for heavy metal adsorption is compared, and the future research gaps are identified.

Sustainable valorization of styrofoam and CO2 into syngas

Plastic is a versatile material broadly used in a variety of industries. However, the current disposal practices for plastic wastes (incineration/landfilling) add the hazardous materials into the environment. To offer a sustainable valorization platform for plastic waste, this study adopted the catalytic pyrolysis process using CO₂ as a co-feedstock. A model plastic waste collected from a seaport was waste buoy (WB), which has been widely used in fishing industry. Prior to the pyrolysis tests, the exact type of plastic in WB and the thermolytic characteristics of WB were examined. Since the WB was made of polystyrene, it was mainly converted into styrene monomer (styrene), dimer (diphenyl-1-butene), and trimer (2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene) from pyrolysis of WB. To further valorize/detoxify styrene derivatives into value-added syngas, catalytic pyrolysis of WB was practiced using the Ni-based catalysts (2/5/10 wt% Ni/SiO₂). The yield of H₂ from the catalytic pyrolysis process of WB was more than one magnitude higher comparing to that from the non-catalytic one. H₂ formation also increased as catalyst loading increased. When flow gas was switched from inert gas to CO₂, CO gas formation was enhanced due to the chemical reactions between CO₂ and styrene derivatives over Ni catalysts. Syngas (H₂/CO) formation under the CO₂ condition was 5 times higher in comparison to the N₂ condition in catalytic pyrolyses of WB with 10 wt% Ni/SiO₂. CO₂ also effectively suppressed coke deposition on a Ni catalyst. This study proposes a sustainable valorization and disposal platform for used plastic waste and greenhouse gas (CO₂), converting them into value-added fuel.

Valorizing plastic toy wastes to flammable gases through CO2-mediated pyrolysis with a Co-based catalyst

Toys are discarded due to their short life cycle. Unfortunately, development of sustainable disposal platform for toy has not gained particular concern. To establish a reliable disposal platform, this study employed a pyrolysis platform to valorize plastics into value-added fuels. To confer more environmentally resilient process, CO₂ was used as a feedstock to enhance the process efficiency from a perspective of the yield of flammable gases. To this end, waste toy brick (WTB) was used as a model compound. The exact types of plastics (polyacrylonitrile, polybutadiene, polystyrene, and polymethyl methacrylate) in WTB were experimentally determined. In pyrolysis of WTB, the complicated mixture of benzene derivatives was inevitably generated. To detoxify them by means of syngas (H₂/CO) production, catalytic pyrolysis was performed. Co catalyst effectively induced chemical bond scissions, leading to substantially enhanced H₂ formation. Also, the gas phase reactions (GPRs) between CO₂ and volatile compounds over Co catalyst expedited the production rate of CO, and such CO enhancement effectively offered a chance to mitigate toxic chemical generations. The synergistic contribution of CO₂ and Co catalyst enhanced syngas formation more than 25 times in reference to pyrolysis of WTB without Co catalyst. The GPRs also greatly prevented catalyst deactivation.

Disposal of plastic mulching film through CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis as a strategic means for microplastic mitigation

Conventional disposal processes (incineration and landfilling) of agricultural plastic wastes release harmful chemicals and microplastics into our ecosystems. To provide a disposal platform not releasing harmful chemicals, pyrolysis of a representative agricultural plastic waste was proposed in this study. Spent plastic mulching film (SMF) was used as a model waste compound. To make pyrolysis process more environmentally benign, CO₂ was used as a raw material in pyrolysis of SMF. H₂ and hydrocarbons were produced from pyrolysis of SMF under the inert (N₂) and CO₂ conditions, because SMF is composed of polyethylene. To enhance conversion of hydrocarbons into H₂, catalytic pyrolysis of SMF was conducted over Ni/SiO₂. Compared to non-catalytic pyrolysis, total concentration of pyrolytic gases was enhanced up to 3.1 and 11.3 times under N₂ and CO₂ conditions, respectively. The gas phase reactions between CO₂ and hydrocarbons led to formation of CO, which enhanced production of pyrolytic gases under the CO₂ condition. Moreover, gas phase reactions resulted in less production of pyrolytic oil from CO₂ condition (15.9 wt%) in reference to the N₂ condition (22.6 wt%). All experimental results confirmed that CO₂ and SMF can be used as useful feedstocks to produce value-added products. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Plastic waste used from a sector of agriculture is incinerated or/and landfilled, generating hazardous microplastic and volatile compounds into the environment. Thus, an environmentally friendly process for plastic waste materials in the agricultural industry is required. This study converted a spent plastic mulching film (SMF), broadly used for plastic greenhouse, into value-added syngas through catalytic pyrolysis. CO₂ was used as a reactant. We found that concentration of CO₂ was key to improve syngas formation from pyrolysis of SMF. Thus, this study suggested that CO₂/SMF are used as useful feedstocks through catalytic pyrolysis, while they were previously discarded as waste materials.

Hollow porous cobalt oxide nanobox as an enhanced for activating monopersulfate to degrade 2-hydroxybenzoic acid in water

As 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) represents a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), constant releasing of HBA into the environment poses threats to the ecology, and thus it is critical to develop effective techniques to remove HBA from water. Recently, sulfate radical (SO₄^‒)-based advanced oxidation processes involved with monopersulfate (MPS) activation are proven as effective approaches for eliminating PPCPs from water, and Co₃O₄ is recognized as a capable catalyst for activating MPS. Therefore, great interests have arisen to develop Co₃O₄-based catalysts with advantageous morphologies and characteristics for enhancing catalytic activities. Therefore, a special Co₃O₄-based material is proposed in this work. Through a surfactant-assisted strategy, a cubic Co-MOF is prepared and used as a precursor, which is etched to afford hollow structure, and then transformed into hollow porous Co₃O₄ nanobox (PCNB). PCNB can exhibit distinct reactive surface with abundant surface oxygen vacancy as well as physical properties in comparison to the commercial Co₃O₄ NPs (com-Co₃O₄ NP), thereby leading to the outstanding catalytic activity of PCNB for activating MPS to degrade HBA. The activation energy (E_a) of 46.2 kJ/mol is also calculated using PCNB + MPS system, which is much lower than most of recent reported studies for activating MPS. PCNB could be also reusable over 5 consecutive HBA degradation cycles. The activation mechanism of MPS by PCNB and HBA degradation pathway are also comprehensively elucidated via experimental evidences and the theoretical calculation to offer insightful information of development of Co₃O₄ for HBA degradation.

Effect of dissolved solids released from biochar on soil microbial metabolism

Dissolved solids released from biochar (DSRB), including organic and inorganic compounds, may affect the role of biochar as a soil amendment. In this study, the effects of DSRB on soil microbe metabolism, especially CO₂ fixation, were evaluated in liquid soil extract. DSRB were found to be released in large amounts (289.05 mg L^-1 at 1 hour) from biochar over a short period of time before their rate of release slowed to a gradual pace. They increased the microbial biomass and provided energy and reducing power to microbes, while reducing their metabolic output of extracellular proteins and polysaccharides. DSRB inputs led to the redistribution of metabolic flux in soil microorganisms and an increased organic carbon content in the short term. This content gradually decreased as it was utilized. DSRB did not improve microbial CO₂ fixation but, rather, enhanced its release, while promoting specific soil microorganism genera, including Cupriavidus, Flavisolibacter, and Pseudoxanthomonas. These heterotrophic genera may compete with autotrophic microorganisms for nutrients but have positive synergistic relationships with autotrophs during CO₂ fixation. These results demonstrated that reducing the DSRB in biochar can improve its role as a soil amendment by enhancing soil carbon storage and CO₂ fixation capabilities.

Perfluorooctanoic acid triggers oxidative stress in anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), as a recalcitrant organic pollutant, inevitably enters wastewater treatment facilities and is enriched in settled sludge. However, the potential impact of PFOA on sludge treatment has never been documented. In this study, the effect of PFOA on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and its underlying mechanism were investigated through batch and long-term experiments. The presence of PFOA was found to be deleterious for methane production from sewage sludge. 170 mg/kg total solids PFOA reduced the cumulative methane production from 197.1 ± 1.92-159.9 ± 3.10 mL/g volatile solids. PFOA induces the production of reactive oxygen species, which directly leads to cell inactivation and interferes with methane production. PFOA stimulates microorganisms to secrete more extracellular polymeric substances (mainly proteins), which not only hinders the solubilization of organic matter but also down-regulate enzyme activities to inhibit acidification and methanogenesis. In addition, PFOA reduces the diversity of microorganisms, especially the abundance of acid-producing bacteria and methanogens, making the microbial community unfavorable for methane production.

Functional use of CO2 to mitigate the formation of bisphenol A in catalytic pyrolysis of polycarbonate

The growing consumption of plastic materials has increased hazardous threats to all environmental media, since current plastic waste management methods release microplastics and toxic chemicals. As such, massive generation of plastic derived pollutants leads to significant public health and environmental problems. In this work, an environmentally sound method for valorization of plastic waste is suggested. In detail, pyrolysis of polycarbonate-containing plastic waste such as automotive headlight housing (AHH) was carried out using CO₂ as a co-reactant. AHH was chosen as it discharges bisphenol A (BPA) and aromatic compounds. Under CO₂ condition, emissions of BPA and its derivatives were suppressed by 14.5% due to gas phase reactions (GPRs) with CO₂. Nevertheless, reaction kinetics for GPRs was not significant. To impart the GPRs, catalytic pyrolysis was done using Ni and Co-based catalysts. During catalytic pyrolysis, syngas production was more than tenfold up comparing to pyrolysis without catalyst. The expedited GPRs over catalysts resulted in the enhanced syngas formation. Total concentration of the toxic chemicals from CO₂-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of AHH decreased by 86.1% and 66.7% over Ni and Co catalysts, comparing to those from N₂ environment.

Manganese oxide-modified biochar: production, characterization and applications for the removal of pollutants from aqueous environments - a review

The development of manganese (Mn) oxides (MnOx) modified biochar (MnOBC) for the removal of pollutants from water has received significant attention. However, a comprehensive review focusing on the use of MnOBC for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water is missing. Therefore, the preparation and characterization of MnOBC, and its capacity for the removal of inorganic (e.g., toxic elements) and organic (e.g., antibiotics and dyes) from water have been discussed in relation to feedstock properties, pyrolysis temperature, modification ratio, and environmental conditions here. The removal mechanisms of pollutants by MnOBC and the fate of the sorbed pollutants onto MnOBC have been reviewed. The impregnation of biochar with MnOx improved its surface morphology, functional group modification, and elemental composition, and thus increased its sorption capacity. This review establishes a comprehensive understanding of synthesizing and using MnOBC as an effective biosorbent for remediation of contaminated aqueous environments.

Strategic hazard mitigation of waste furniture boards via pyrolysis: Pyrolysis behavior, mechanisms, and value-added products

Waste furniture boards (WFBs) contain hazardous formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds when left unmanaged or improperly disposed through landfilling and open burning. In this study, pyrolysis was examined as a disposal and recovery approach to convert three types of WFBs (i.e., particleboard, plywood, and fiberboard) into value-added chemicals using thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). TG-FTIR analysis shows that pyrolysis performed at an optimum temperature of 250-550 °C produced volatile products mainly consisting of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and light hydrocarbons, such as methane. Py-GC/MS shows that pyrolysis at different final temperatures and heating rates recovered mainly phenols (25.9-54.7%) for potential use as additives in gasoline, colorants, and food. The calorific value of WFBs ranged from 16 to 18 MJ/kg but the WFBs showed high H/C (1.7-1.8) and O/C (0.8-1.0) ratios that provide low chemical energy during combustion. This result indicates that WFBs are not recommended to be burned directly as fuel, however, they can be pyrolyzed and converted into solid pyrolytic products such as biochar with improved properties for fuel application. Hazardous components, such as cyclopropylmethanol, were removed and converted into value-added compounds, such as 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-d-glucopyranose, for use in pharmaceuticals. These results show that the pyrolysis of WFBs at high temperature and low heating rate is a promising feature to produce value-added chemicals and reduce the formation of harmful chemical species. Thus, the release of hazardous formaldehyde and greenhouse gases into the environment is redirected.

Progress in thermochemical conversion of aquatic weeds in shellfish aquaculture for biofuel generation: Technical and economic perspectives

Rapid growth of aquatic weeds in treatment pond poses undesirable challenge to shellfish aquaculture, requiring the farmers to dispose these weeds on a regular basis. This article reviews the potential and application of various aquatic weeds for generation of biofuels using recent thermochemical technologies (torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization/liquefaction, pyrolysis, gasification). The influence of key operational parameters for optimising the aquatic weed conversion efficiency was discussed, including the advantages, drawbacks and techno-economic aspects of the thermochemical technologies, and their viability for large-scale application. Via extensive study in small and large scale operation, and the economic benefits derived, pyrolysis is identified as a promising thermochemical technology for aquatic weed conversion. The perspectives, challenges and future directions in thermochemical conversion of aquatic weeds to biofuels were also reviewed. This review provides useful information to promote circular economy by integrating shellfish aquaculture with thermochemical biorefinery of aquatic weeds rather than disposing them in landfills.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products' (PPCPs) impact on enriched nitrifying cultures

The impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) on the performance of biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been widely studied using whole-community approaches. These contaminants affect the capacity of microbial communities to transform nutrients; however, most have neither honed their examination on the nitrifying communities directly nor considered the impact on individual populations. In this study, six PPCPs commonly found in WWTPs, including a stimulant (caffeine), an antimicrobial agent (triclosan), an insect repellent ingredient (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)) and antibiotics (ampicillin, colistin and ofloxacin), were selected to assess their short-term toxic effect on enriched nitrifying cultures: Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp. The results showed that triclosan exhibited the greatest inhibition on nitrification with EC₅₀ of 89.1 μg L^-1. From the selected antibiotics, colistin significantly affected the overall nitrification with the lowest EC₅₀ of 1 mg L^-1, and a more pronounced inhibitory effect on ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) compared to nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The EC₅₀ of ampicillin and ofloxacin was 23.7 and 12.7 mg L^-1, respectively. Additionally, experimental data suggested that nitrifying bacteria were insensitive to the presence of caffeine. In the case of DEET, moderate inhibition of nitrification (<40%) was observed at 10 mg L^-1. These findings contribute to the understanding of the response of nitrifying communities in presence of PPCPs, which play an essential role in biological nitrification in WWTPs. Knowing specific community responses helps develop mitigation measures to improve system resilience.

Synergistic effects of CO2 on complete thermal degradation of plastic waste mixture through a catalytic pyrolysis platform: A case study of disposable diaper

Consumption of diverse plastics has posed an environmental threat because their disposal practices, landfilling and incineration, release toxic chemicals and microplastics into all environmental media. Indeed, heterogeneous matrix of plastic wastes makes them hard to be disposed. As such, this study aimed to introduce an environmentally benign/reliable disposal platform for complete decomposition of plastic wastes. Pyrolysis process was adapted to convert plastics into syngas, and a disposable diaper (DD) was used as model plastic waste, because it is composed of a variety of polymeric materials. Pyrolysis of DD resulted in the formation of gaseous products and pyrogenic oils, composed of (oxygenated) hydrocarbons. Nonetheless, reactivity of CO₂ as an oxidant in pyrolysis of DD was negligible. To impart the strong/desired reactivity of CO₂, Ni-based catalyst was adopted. Ni catalyst enhanced H₂ and CO formations 4 and 15 times more than pyrolysis without catalyst at 700 °C under CO₂. The value-added syngas production was originated from the reduction of polymeric waste, and its derivatives including aromatic compounds. Thus, CO₂ offered a strategic means to produce value-added chemicals and reduce aromaticity of pyrogenic products. The observations could offer an innovative way to control the fate of toxic chemicals derived from plastic pyrolysis.

Removal of ammonium, phosphate, and sulfonamide antibiotics using alum sludge and low-grade charcoal pellets

Powder adsorbents perform well due to their large surface area but are difficult to use because of aggregation and channeling. In this study, pelletization of adsorbents was proposed as a solution to these operating problems. A three-component mixture was extruded into pellets and calcined under air or nitrogen conditions The pellet adsorbent removed 47, 71, 97, and 72% of ammonium, phosphate, sulfathiazole, and sulfamethoxazole, respectively. Bentonite improved greatly the strength of pellets, and a 10 wt% of bentonite was sufficient to maintain pellet shape and mass. No significant difference in individual adsorption and multi-pollutant adsorption was found. Pellet adsorbents with alum sludge, bentonite, and low-grade charcoal are low-cost materials that effectively remove multi-pollutants from the aqueous phase.

Valorization of aflatoxin contaminated peanut into biodiesel through non-catalytic transesterification

Aflatoxins (AFs) are the extremely hazardous metabolites (carcinogens) that are sporadically observed in crops, and these toxic chemicals are indeed lethal to the health of living organisms including human beings. Thus, AF contaminated food waste needs to be disposed as an environmentally benign way, not releasing it into the environment. This study offered a sustainable disposal and valorization platform for AF contaminated food. Peanut was used as a model food waste, because AF is readily appeared in the peanut during its harvesting, cultivation, storage, transportation process. As the valorization platform, non-catalytic transesterification of AF contaminated peanut was employed to convert it to biodiesel (BD). From the process, lipid in AF contaminated peanut is converted into BD (95.2 wt% yield) at 365°C for 1 min. Since the boiling points of BD and AF are significantly different, this process could also resolve the separation problem of AF (180 °C) from BD (≥ 330 °C) during the transesterification reaction. As a comparison study, alkali-catalyzed reaction was done. The alkali-catalyzed one required a pretreatment process to extract peanut oil for transesterification. The highest yield was 67.8 wt% yield after 6 h of reaction at 65 °C.

Construction of biotreatment platforms for aromatic hydrocarbons and their future perspectives

Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHCs) are one of the major environmental pollutants introduced from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Many AHCs are well known for their toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic impact on human health and ecological systems. Biodegradation is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option as microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi, and algae) can efficiently breakdown or transform such pollutants into less harmful and simple metabolites (e.g., carbon dioxide (aerobic), methane (anaerobic), water, and inorganic salts). This paper is organized to offer a state-of-the-art review on the biodegradation of AHCs (monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) and associated mechanisms. The recent progress in biological treatment using suspended and attached growth bioreactors for the biodegradation of AHCs is also discussed. In addition, various substrate growth and inhibition models are introduced along with the key factors governing their biodegradation kinetics. The growth and inhibition models have helped gain a better understanding of substrate inhibition in biodegradation. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) aspects are also described to assess the technical, economical, and environmental impacts of the biological treatment system.

Production of value-added aromatics from wasted COVID-19 mask via catalytic pyrolysis

In this study, wasted mask is chosen as a pyrolysis feedstock whose generation has incredibly increased these days due to COVID-19. We suggest a way to produce value-added chemicals (e.g., aromatic compounds) from the mask with high amounts through catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP). To this end, the effects of zeolite catalyst properties on the upgradation efficiency of pyrolytic products produced from pyrolysis of wasted mask were investigated. The compositions and yields of pyrolytic gases and oils were characterized as functions of pyrolysis temperature and the type of zeolite catalyst (HBeta, HY, and HZSM-5), including the mesoporous catalyst of Al-MCM-41. The mask was pyrolyzed in a fixed bed reactor, and the pyrolysis gases evolved in the reactor was routed to a secondary reactor inside which the zeolite catalyst was loaded. It was chosen 550 °C as the CFP temperature to compare the catalyst performance for the production of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) because this temperature gave the highest oil yield (80.7 wt%) during the non-catalytic pyrolysis process. The large pore zeolite group of HBeta and HY led to 134% and 67% higher BTEX concentrations than HZSM-5, respectively, likely because they had larger pores, higher surface areas, and higher acid site density than the HZSM-5. This is the first report of the effect of zeolite characteristics on BTEX production via CFP.

Strategic disposal of flood debris via CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis

Recent abnormal climate changes resulted in the dramatic alternation of rainfall and flood patterns in many countries. The massive generation of flood debris, a mixture of soil (sediment), biomass, plastic, metal, and various hazardous materials, poses various environmental and public health problems. This study suggests a sustainable technical platform to convert the hazardous materials into value-added products. CO₂-assisted pyrolysis was used to thermally convert flood debris into syngas (H₂ and CO). CO₂ enhanced the syngas production due to gas phase homogeneous reactions (HRs) between CO₂ and volatile hydrocarbons evolved from pyrolysis of flood debris. For improvement of HRs in line with enhancement of syngas production, additional thermal energy and earth abundant catalyst were used. In particular, Ni/SiO₂ catalyst increased more than one order of magnitude higher syngas production, comparing to non-catalytic pyrolysis. Synergistic effect of CO₂ and Ni catalyst showed nearly 50% more production of syngas in reference to catalytic pyrolysis under N₂. During flood debris pyrolysis, compositional matrix of flood debris was also determined by detecting index chemicals of waste materials that cannot be identified by naked eyes. Thus, this study confirmed that CO₂-assisted pyrolysis is a useful tool for conversion of flood debris into value-added chemicals.

Recycling of biogenic hydroxyapatite (HAP) for cleaning of lead from wastewater: performance and mechanism

In China, the utilization and recycling of chicken waste have become a significant environmental issue. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of biogenic hydroxyapatite (HAP) materials, recycled from chicken waste, for Pb(II) sequestration from wastewater. The results from batch experiments indicate that biogenic HAP could effectively remove Pb(II) from an aqueous solution. The maximum removal efficiency of Pb (more than > 99%) was observed under the following operational conditions: initial pH of 3.0, initial Pb(II) concentrations of 208 mg/L, and 1 g/L of HAP adsorbents. The presence of coexisting divalent ions, including Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+, had no significant influence on Pb(II) removal. Spectroscopic analysis suggests that the dissolution-precipitation mechanism was mainly responsible for Pb(II) sequestration under acidic conditions (pH ≤ 3.0). Our findings indicate that biogenic HAP recycled from biowaste can be used as an efficient adsorbent for cleaning Pb(II) from wastewater.

Pelletized adsorbent of alum sludge and bentonite for removal of arsenic

Powder adsorbents show an excellent adsorption capacity for arsenic(As) due to the large specific surface area. However, the performance of powder adsorbents decreases significantly by channeling in the adsorption bed, and the powder is released from the bed. Pelletization of power adsorbent can solve the problems, and bentonite was proposed as a binder to improve the strength. The adsorption capacity and lifetime of pelletized adsorbent were evaluated through a batch and column study. The addition of bentonite decreased adsorption capacity by 16% of pellet without bentonite, but improved compressive strength of adsorbent up to 3.6 times. In the batch test, the maximum adsorption capacity of pelletized adsorbent is 22.2 mg As/g, which is about 40% of powder adsorbent. However, in the column study, pellet adsorbent showed similar adsorption performance and lifetime to commercial and powder adsorbent. As a result, the pellet adsorbent using bentonite is a potential low-cost adsorbent to remove effectively As in the aqueous phase.

A continuous flow membrane bio-reactor releases the feedback inhibition of self-generated free organic carbon on cbb gene transcription of a typical chemoautotrophic bacterium to improve its CO2 fixation efficiency

Since the free organic carbon (FOC) generated by chemoautotrophic bacterium self has a feedback inhibition effect on its growth and carbon fixation, a continuous flow membrane bio-reactor was designed to remove extracellular FOC (EFOC) and release its inhibition effect. The promotion effect of membrane reactor on growth and carbon fixation of typical chemoautotrophic bacterium and its mechanism were studied. The accumulated apparent carbon fixation yield in membrane reactor was 3.24 times that in the control reactor. The EFOC per unit bacteria and cbb gene transcription level in membrane reactor were about 0.41 times and 11.18 times that in control reactor in late stage, respectively. Membrane reactor separated out EFOC, especially the small molecules, which facilitated the release of intracellular FOC, thereby releasing the inhibition of FOC on cbb gene transcription, thus promoting growth and carbon fixation of the typical chemoautotrophic bacterium. This study lays a foundation for enhancing carbon fixation by chemoautotrophic bacteria and expands the application field of membrane reactor.

Mitigation of harmful chemical formation from pyrolysis of tobacco waste using CO2

Global consumption of tobacco has been continuously increasing. This results in the considerable generation of toxic waste materials from the tobacco industry and daily life. Conventional disposal methods for them (incineration and landfilling) could be a potential hazard for releasing carcinogens and toxins into our eco-system. Accordingly, an eco-friendly disposal platform for converting tobacco waste (TW) into syngas was mainly studied in this present work. To realize this, pyrolysis of two commercial cigarette products (Marlboro and HEETS (electronic cigarette)) was done under the CO2/N2 conditions. One of the main findings from the present study was that CO2 reacted with volatile matters (VMs) obtained from the thermolysis of TW through the gas phase reactions (GPRs), which provided a strategic measure to manipulate carbon rearrangement of all pyrolysates. In particular, the GPRs expedited the carbon rearrangement of harmful chemical species, converting toxic chemicals into syngas. When the fraction of VMs in TWs increased, the GPR were more effective. Therefore, the introduced eco-friendly method using CO2-mediated thermochemical process could be beneficial for energy recovery from TWs while mitigating the formations of harmful chemical species.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals, which are introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities. Aqueous film forming foam used in firefighting, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids are major sources of PFAS input to soil and groundwater. Remediation of PFAS contaminated solid and aqueous media is challenging, which is attributed to the chemical and thermal stability of PFAS and the complexity of PFAS mixtures. In this review, remediation of PFAS contaminated soils through manipulation of their bioavailability and destruction is presented. While the mobilizing amendments (e.g., surfactants) enhance the mobility and bioavailability of PFAS, the immobilizing amendments (e.g., activated carbon) decrease their bioavailability and mobility. Mobilizing amendments can be applied to facilitate the removal of PFAS though soil washing, phytoremediation, and complete destruction through thermal and chemical redox reactions. Immobilizing amendments are likely to reduce the transfer of PFAS to food chain through plant and biota (e.g., earthworm) uptake, and leaching to potable water sources. Future studies should focus on quantifying the potential leaching of the mobilized PFAS in the absence of removal by plant and biota uptake or soil washing, and regular monitoring of the long-term stability of the immobilized PFAS.

Efficacy of electrode position in microbial fuel cell for simultaneous Cr(VI) reduction and bioelectricity production

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that are bio-energy transducers capture bioelectricity produced from the oxidation of organic matter by using the electro-active bacteria grown on the biofilm attached on anode. Previous studies explored the effect of several limiting factors, such as electrode material, catalyst type, membrane structure, and electrolyte, on the electrochemical performance of MFCs. However, the effects of electrode position on Cr(VI) reduction and bioelectricity production remain unknown. In this study, MFCs with different electrode positions (i.e., 4 cm (MFC-4), 3 cm (MFC-3), 2 cm (MFC-2), and 1 cm (MFC-1)) were designed and fabricated to evaluate the overall performance of MFCs. The results of electrochemical analysis confirmed that MFC-2 exhibited low exchange transfer resistance (4.9 Ω) and strong conductivity, resulting in optimal electrochemical performance. In addition, Cr(VI) was completely removed within 11 h in MFC-2 with a large reduction rate of 0.91 g/m³·h. and COD removal efficiency of 78.25%. The overall performance of MFC-2 was comparatively higher than those of MFC-1 (0.80 g/m³·h and 68.82%), MFC-3 (0.64 g/m³·h and 61.67%), and MFC-4 (0.52 g/m³·h and 39.85%). Meanwhile, MFC-2 generated high open voltage (1.02 V) and power density (535.4 mW/m²), which are 1.4- and 3.1-fold larger than those of MFC-4 (0.72 V and 171.3 mW/m²). High COD removal and power density indicated the strong electrochemical activity of electroactive bacteria in the anode chamber of the MFCs, which was due to the low resistance in the MFCs could accelerate electron transfer and boost electrochemical reaction. Consequently, the optimal electrode spacing in MFCs was 2 cm. Further studies confirmed that Cr(VI) was removed and deposited in the form of Cr(III) on the electrode surface. High-throughput analysis suggested Pseudomonas species are the key electroactive bacteria for electricity generation.

Stochastic modeling of chlorophyll-a for probabilistic assessment and monitoring of algae blooms in the Lower Nakdong River, South Korea

Eutrophication is one of the critical water quality issues in the world nowadays. Various studies have been conducted to explore the contributing factors related to eutrophication symptoms. However, in the field of eutrophication modeling, the stochastic nature associated with the eutrophication process has not been sufficiently explored, especially in a multivariate stochastic modeling framework. In this study, a multivariate hidden Markov model (MHMM) that can consider the spatio-temporal dependence in chlorophyll-a concentration over the Nakdong River of South Korea was proposed. The MHMM can effectively cluster the intra-seasonal and inter-annual variability of chlorophyll-a, thereby enabling us to understand the spatio-temporal evolutions of algal blooms. The relationships between hydro-climatic conditions (e.g., temperature and river flow) and chlorophyll-a concentrations were evident, whereas a relatively weak relationship with water quality parameters was observed. The MHMM enables us to effectively infer the conditional probability of the eutrophication state for the following month. The self-transition likelihood of staying in the current state is substantially higher than the likelihood of moving to other states. Moreover, the proposed modeling approach can effectively offer a probabilistic decision-support framework for constructing an alert classification of the eutrophication. The potential use of the proposed modeling framework was also provided.

Fabrication and evaluation of silica embedded and zerovalent iron composited biochars for arsenate removal from water

Waste date palm-derived biochar (DPBC) was modified with nano-zerovalent iron (BC-ZVI) and silica (BC-SiO₂) through mechanochemical treatments and evaluated for arsenate (As(V)) removal from water. The feedstock and synthesized adsorbents were characterized through proximate, ultimate, and chemical analyses for structural, surface, and mineralogical compositions. BC-ZVI demonstrated the highest surface area and contents of C, N, and H. A pH range of 2-6 was optimum for BC-ZVI (100% removal), 3-6 for DPBC (89% removal), and 4-6 for BC-SiO₂ (18% removal). Co-occurring PO₄^3- and SO₄^2- ions showed up to 100% reduction, while NO₃^- and Cl^- ions resulted in up to 26% reduction in As(V) removal. Fitness of the Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherms to As(V) adsorption data suggested that both mono- and multi-layer adsorption processes occurred. BC-ZVI showed superior performance by demonstrating the highest Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (26.52 mg g^-1), followed by DPBC, BC-SiO₂, and commercial activated carbon (AC) (7.33, 5.22, and 3.28 mg g^-1, respectively). Blockage of pores with silica particles in BC-SiO₂ resulted in lower As(V) removal than that of DPBC. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well with the As(V) adsorption data (R² = 0.99), while the Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, and power function models showed a moderate fitness (R² = 0.53-0.93). The dynamics of As(V) adsorption onto the tested adsorbents exhibited the highest adsorption rates for BC-ZVI. As(V) adsorption onto the tested adsorbents was confirmed through post-adsorption FTIR, SEM-EDS, and XRD analyses. Adsorption of As(V) onto DPBC, BC-SiO₂, and AC followed electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, and intraparticle diffusion, whereas, these mechanisms were further abetted by the higher surface area, nano-sized structure, and redox reactions of BC-ZVI.

Catalytic ozonation of toluene using Mn-M bimetallic HZSM-5 (M: Fe, Cu, Ru, Ag) catalysts at room temperature

We investigated the catalytic efficiency of Mn-based bimetallic oxides in degrading toluene and ozone at room temperature. The room temperature-active bimetallic oxide catalysts were prepared by the addition of Fe, Cu, Ru, and Ag precursors to Mn/HZSM-5. We obtained H₂-temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR) profiles, X-ray diffraction patterns, and X-ray photoelectron spectra to investigate the characteristics of the prepared catalysts. The catalytic efficiency of Mn-based bimetallic oxide catalysts in degrading toluene and ozone at room temperature was mostly improved by the addition of the secondary metals. The prepared bimetallic oxide catalysts, Cu-Mn/HZSM-5, Fe-Mn/HZSM-5, Ru-Mn/HZSM-5, and Ag-Mn/HZSM-5, enhanced efficiency for toluene removal compared to Mn/HZSM-5. The H₂-TPR profiles of the Mn-based bimetallic oxide catalysts showed stronger and broader adsorption-desorption bands at lower temperatures than the profile of Mn/HZSM-5. Additionally, the ratio of the surface defective oxygen over the lattice oxygen on the bimetallic oxide catalysts was higher than that of Mn-only catalysts; the ratio of Mn³⁺ over Mn⁴⁺ was higher for all bimetallic oxide catalysts, as well. Among the bimetallic oxide catalysts, Ru-Mn/HZSM-5 showed the highest efficiency for the removal of toluene to CO_x due to the synergetic effect of the oxidation state and reducible potential at room temperature.

Key internal factors leading to the variability in CO2 fixation efficiency of different sulfur-oxidizing bacteria during autotrophic cultivation

Variability in the apparent CO₂ fixation yield of four aerobic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (Halothiobacillus neapolitanus DSM 15147, Thiobacillus thioparus DSM 505, Thiomonas intermedia DSM 18155, and Starkeya novella DSM 506) in autotrophic culturing was studied, and mutual effects of key intrinsic factors on CO₂ fixation were explored. DSM 15147 and DSM 505 exhibited much higher CO₂ fixation yields than DSM 18155 and DSM 506. The differences in CO₂ fixation yield were determined not only by cbb gene transcription, but also by cell synthesis rate, which was determined by rRNA gene copy number; the rRNA gene copy number had a more significant effect than cbb gene transcription on the apparent CO₂ fixation yield. Moreover, accumulation of EDOC was observed in all four strains during chemoautotrophic cultivation, and the proportion of EDOC accounting for total fixed organic carbon (TOC; EDOC/TOC ratio) was much higher in DSM 18155 and DSM 506 than in DSM 15147 and DSM 505. The accumulation of EDOC led to a significant decrease in the cbb gene transcription efficiency during cultivation, and a further feedback inhibitory effect on CO₂ fixation.

Turning date palm waste into carbon nanodots and nano zerovalent iron composites for excellent removal of methylthioninium chloride from water

Novel carbon nanodots (nCD-DBC) and nano zero-valent iron composites (nZVI-DBC) were synthesized using date palm waste-derived biochar (DBC). The synthesized materials were analyzed for chemical and structural composition by using FTIR, SEM, XRD, and TGA, and evaluated for their methylthioninium chloride dye (MB) removal efficiency from contaminated aqueous solutions. pH 7.0 was found optimum for the highest MB removal in sorption batch studies. Kinetics sorption of MB onto the sorbents was best described by pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.93-0.99) and Elovich models (R2 = 0.86-0.97) implying that sorption was being controlled by chemisorption. Langmuir model predicted maximum sorption capacities for nCD-DBC, nZVI-DBC, and DBC were 1558.66, 1182.90, and 851.67 mg g-1, respectively, which correlated with the results of kinetics sorption. Likewise, nCD-DBC yielded the highest partition coefficient (7067 mL g-1), followed by nZVI-DBC (1460 mL g-1), and DBC (930 mL g-1). Post-sorption XRD, FTIR, and SEM analyses depicted the binding of MB onto the sorbents. It was suggested that electrostatic interactions, π-π electron donor-accepter interactions, degradation, and diffusion were responsible for MB removal by the synthesized materials. Therefore, the nCD-DBC, nZVI-DBC, and DBC can potentially be used for scavenging MB dye from contaminated aqueous solutions.

A new biorefinery platform for producing (C2-5) bioalcohols through the biological/chemical hybridization process

This review presents an emerging biorefinery platform for C_2-5 bioalcohol production through chemical synthesis using the organic waste materials. Bioalcohols are the most commercialized carbon-neutral transportation fuels, compatible with existing an internal combustion (IC) engine. However, current bioalcohol fermentation processes have made from sugar-rich edible crops. Also, carbon loss from the fermentation process is substantial. To minimize carbon loss, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) can be utilized as a raw material for bioalcohol production. Thus, a two-step chemical upgrading of VFAs into C_2-5 alcohols is summarized in comparison with current challenges of biological fermentation processes for bioalcohol production. This review also provides the prospect of the hybrid biological/chemical process, presenting the technical advantages of the system. Finally, economic viability of hybridized process for bioalcohol production is compared with the current biological process.
