Abstract
INTRODUCTION This systematic review aimed to compare reciprocating with continuous rotary instrumentation kinematics, by means of microcomputed tomography evaluations, in extracted human permanent teeth with moderate and severe canal curvatures. METHODS The research protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews and given the reference number CRD42023404035. An electronic search was undertaken in MEDLINE (PubMed), EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science databases until December 2021. Manual screening of issues in endodontic journals and references of relevant articles were assessed individually. The risk of bias (RoB) of the included articles was evaluated with the QUIN tool (Quality Assessment Tool for In Vitro Studies). RESULTS Among 1640 retrieved articles, 49 were included in the qualitative synthesis. Fifteen articles had low RoB, 33 articles had medium RoB, and only 1 study was at high RoB. Continuous rotary systems had better centering ability in both moderate and severe canal curvatures and resulted in less apical transportation in severely curved root canals. None of the kinematic systems was capable of instrumenting the entire canal surface area. Reciprocating kinematics systems tended to provide higher increase in surface area of severely curved canals and produced fewer dentinal microcracks in moderately curved canals. CONCLUSIONS The evidence presented in this review suggests that continuous rotary system seems to be better than reciprocating system in solving the major issues encountered during root canal instrumentation of extracted teeth with moderate and severe curvatures.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate root canal preparation with nickel titanium rotary instruments and complementary preparation with ultrasonic tip in curved canals of mandibular molars with isthmus. Twenty-eight mesial roots of mandibular molars with curvature between 20° and 40° and presence of isthmus throughout the entire extension of the root canals were prepared using ProDesign Logic CM (PDL) up to size 40.05, or HyFlex EDM (HFEDM) up to size 40.04. Complementary preparation was performed in the isthmus region using the ultrasonic insert E18D (Helse, Istmo Diamantada). The root canals were scanned using micro-CT (SkyScan 1176) at 9 µm voxel size before and after each preparation step. Transportation, percentage of increase in volume, debris and uninstrumented surface (UNS) were evaluated. Mann Whitney, Wilcoxon, paired and non-paired t-tests were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). The canals prepared with PDL and HFEDM obtained similar results for all the variables assessed before using E18D (p > 0.05). E18D significantly decreased the percentage of debris and UNS values in both Groups (p < 0.05). The complementary preparations with E18D caused a smaller quantity of debris in the isthmus of the canals previously prepared with PDL in comparison with HFEDM (p < 0.05). PDL and HFEDM provided similar root canal preparation. PDL promoted a smaller quantity of Debris in the isthmus than HFEDM after using E18D. E18D significantly improved cleaning, and reduced Debris and UNS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed the influence of preparation size on the efficacy of shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) and conventional irrigation (CI) on removal of accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD) from isthmus-containing mandibular molars using micro-computed tomographic analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty extracted mandibular molars with two mesial canals connected by an isthmus were selected. Canals were shaped with Mtwo instruments (VDW, Munich, Germany) up to sizes 25/.06, 40/.04 or 40/.06 (n = 20), and specimens were distributed into 2 final irrigation groups (n = 10): SWEEPS and CI. Roots were scanned at a resolution of 10.5 µm before and after preparation and final irrigation. Data sets were co-registered, and the percentage reduction of AHTD calculated for each specimen was statistically compared using analysis of variance with a of 5% significance level. RESULTS The preparation size did not significantly influence the percentage reduction of AHTD (p < 0.05), whereas the final irrigation technique had a significant effect on debris removal (p < 0.05). A significant reduction of AHTD was achieved after final irrigation in all groups (p < 0.05); however, SWEEPS was associated with a significantly greater percentage reduction of debris than CI (p < 0.05). None of the specimens presented a completely clean isthmus. CONCLUSIONS Removal of AHTD was not significantly affected by the preparation size. SWEEPS was associated with significantly less debris than CI. CLINICAL RELEVANCE SWEEPS performed significantly better than CI regarding the removal of AHTD from isthmus-containing mandibular molars irrespective of the preparation size.

Abstract
A fundamental aspect of the Endodontic field is the knowledge of root canal anatomy. Using a variety of techniques, the internal and external anatomy of teeth have been extensively investigated throughout the past century. Recent improvements in three-dimensional computed tomography have enabled more detailed evaluations of root canal morphology in both clinical and laboratory settings. Essentially, researches have unveiled that the root canal constitutes a complex system, comprising not only the main root canal but also lateral components, including isthmuses, fins, accessory canals and apical ramifications. Undoubtedly, this intricate morphology poses a significant challenge when it comes to the process of shaping, cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system. This article aims to explore the anatomical aspects of the root canal system that impact the chemomechanical procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) study analyzed band-shaped isthmuses having their floor at the apical third of the mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars in terms of 2D and 3D morphological parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 199 maxillary first molars were scanned with micro-CT. Twenty-seven specimens, confirmed to have a band-shaped isthmus, were further examined in terms of the isthmus length, volume, structure model index (SMI), and surface area. The distance of apical foramina of mesial canals from the isthmus floor and major-minor diameters, roundness, perimeter, and area of the isthmus roof and floor were compared. Statistical analyses were performed with descriptive statistics and t-test with a 5% significance threshold. RESULTS The band-shaped isthmus frequency was 13.5% and its length reached up to 5.5 mm. The distances of the apical foramina of mesiobuccal canals (MB1 and MB2) from the isthmus floor were similar (p > .05). Isthmus roof and floor showed significant differences in terms of their major diameter and area (p < .05), whereas their minor diameter, roundness, and perimeter values were similar (p > .05). CONCLUSION The band-shaped isthmuses are not rare and can reach through the half of the root length with oval cross-sections in the floor and roof anatomy. The distance between the isthmus floor and apical foramina did not differ between MB1 and MB2. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The band-shaped isthmus morphology contributes to the complexity of the apical anatomy of maxillary first molar teeth with various lengths and diameters.

Abstract
Accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD) in root canal irregularities may negatively impact adequate root canal disinfection. In light of this, the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) to reduce AHTD has been largely studied in in vitro studies, which have adopted different analytic methods of varying accuracy to determine the extent of AHTD more correctly. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare how well PUI and non-activated irrigation (NAI) systems perform in reducing AHTD during final irrigation protocols, based exclusively on studies whose analyses used microCT scanning. A systematic search of the studies published up to April 2020 was performed using MeSH terms and free terms, in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, BVS (Lilacs and BBO) and Embase. The inclusion criteria consisted of laboratory studies that evaluated the amount of AHTD, and compared PUI with NAI protocols using microCT analysis. The risk of bias in the selected studies was assessed critically by two reviewers. A meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan software program (P<0.05), and included studies providing the standardized mean difference (SMD), using a fixed effect model, and adopting a confidence interval of 95%. In all, 3495 studies were identified, three of which met the inclusion criteria. All three were considered as having a low risk of bias. The meta-analysis comparing the ability of PUI and NAI protocols to remove hard tissue debris showed a higher percentage of AHTD reduction (P<0.01) for PUI, with a confidence interval of 1.41 [0.79, 2.02]. The heterogeneity among the studies was 82% (I2). Considering the limitations of the present study, this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that PUI was more effective than NAI in removing hard tissue debris, based exclusively on studies that used microCT scanning to provide a more precise analysis of the two techniques used. The findings presented in the present study reinforce the concept that PUI can increase residue removal and improve the cleanliness of the root canal in endodontic treatments.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this systematic review and network meta-analysis was to identify the best irrigant activation technique (IAT) for the removal of accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD) from the mesial root of mandibular molars evaluated using micro-CT studies.Methods The research question was based on the PICO format. Four electronic databases - PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science - were searched for articles up to June 2020. Selected articles were assessed for bias using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical appraisal tool. The network meta-analysis using a fixed-effects model and SUCRA ranking were performed. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the CINeMA framework.Results Eleven studies were included for qualitative synthesis while seven were included for quantitative synthesis. The risk of bias of all included articles was low. The results based on SUCRA values revealed the IAT shock wave-enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (100%) resulted in the greatest reduction of the volume of AHTD from mesial roots of mandibular molars. Ranking of the other IATs was as follows: photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (87%), laser-activated irrigation (79.3%), XP EndoFinisher (71.2%), ultrasonically activated irrigation (59.6%), apical negative pressure (42.3%), EasyClean (37.4%), EDDY (26.2%), EndoActivator (24.2%), self-adjusting file (11.6%) and needle irrigation (11.3%).Conclusion None of the IATs rendered the root canals completely free of AHTD. The laser-activated irrigation groups fared better than all other interventions in reducing AHTD from the mesial roots of mandibular molars. The confidence rating ranged from low to high for indirect evidence and moderate to high for mixed evidence. Results must be interpreted with caution due to the laboratory nature of the included studies.

Abstract
Simple Summary Employing a chemo-mechanical preparation, one of the primary procedural phases in endodontic therapy is carefully removing debris, pulp tissue, and bacteria from the root canal system. The cross-sectional root canal shapes comprise circular, oval, long oval, flattened, or irregular. The frequency of oval root canals in the apical third of human teeth is around 25 to 50%. Motorised endodontic files leave almost 60% of the oval root canal perimeter unaffected by their instrumentation, thus resulting in faulty obturation that is required to prevent reinfection and to restrict the passage of microorganisms and toxins to and from the periapical tissue. Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of instrumentation and the potential for debris deposition using XP-endo shaper plus (XP-SP) and full-sequence SAF (F-SAF) on the adaption of thermoplastic root canal fillings in oval canals. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, ninety human permanent mandibular incisors with a single oval canal 6 mm from the apex (verified using pre-operative CBCT scanning) were instrumented with XP-SP and F-SAF. Obtura III Max apparatus was used for root canal obturation without the use of a root canal sealer. The roots were then sectioned 6 mm from the apex and examined with a digital stereomicroscope at x25 magnification to assess the root canal fillings. The F-SAF was associated with a significantly higher (p < 0.01) percentage of entire adaptation of the root fillings (76%) compared to the XP-SP (57%). Furthermore, the XP-SP group was also associated with higher (p < 0.01) defective obturation with debris at 17% and with voids at 26%. However, the F-SAF had lower percentages of defective obturations (7% with debris and 17% with voids). The quality of obturation of oval canals instrumented using full-sequence SAF was better.

Abstract
Introduction: Conventional irrigation techniques do not remove debris adequately. The remaining tissue debris cause infection inside the root canal and may also affect the seal of the root canal. The study aimed to compare the ability of EndoVac (EV) with XP-endo finisher (XPF) in debris removal using micro-CT analysis. Materials and Methods: We used 12 lower first permanent molar human teeth for this study. The root canals were instrumented using a small TF adaptive system. Then, the volume of debris was calculated. Teeth were divided into two groups, according to advanced irrigation methods, with six teeth per group: EV group and XPF group. The volume of debris was calculated again. The paired-sample t-test was used to compare the volume of the debris before and after the use of advanced irrigation methods with the statistical significance of P < 0.05. The percentage of debris reduction was also calculated. Results: Both EV and XPF showed a significant decrease of debris in the mesial canals (P < 0.05), whereas EV only showed a significant reduction of debris in the distal canals. Conclusion: Both EV and XPF were able to significantly reduce debris after instrumentation in the mesial canals of lower first mandibular molars. Clinical Significance: The study provides insight into the recent advanced methods used in debris removal and canal disinfection.

Abstract
Objective
The removal of residual pulpal debris (RPD) from the root canal walls, especially in necrotic teeth is important for successful endodontic outcome. The aim of this study was to evaluate the RPD removal efficacy of handpiece mounted continuous irrigation with simultaneous root canal preparation from the apical third of root canals as compared to conventional syringe irrigation (SI).
Materials and Methods
Ninety extracted teeth were randomly divided into three groups: SI; handpiece mounted continuous irrigation (CI); and both syringe and continuous irrigation (CI+SI). After root canal preparation, roots were sectioned at 1 (a), 3 (b) and 5 (c) mm from apex and prepared for Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Sections were microscopically examined for presence of RPD.
Statistical Analysis
Intergroup difference in average percentage of RPD at different root levels was calculated by using analysis of variance test (ANOVA). Tuckey test was used for pairwise comparison.
Results
ANOVA showed significant difference between all three groups (

< 0.05). SI group showed a significantly higher percentage of RPD as compared with CI and CI+ SI groups at all root levels (
p
< 0.01). At root level a, CI showed a significantly higher percentage of RPD as compared with CI+SI (
p
< 0.01).
Conclusion
Handpiece mounted CI during rotary instrumentation showed a significant reduction in RPD as compared with conventional syringe irrigation. This technique was found to be an effective method for an enhanced root canal debridement.

Abstract
Adequate knowledge and accurate characterization of root and canal anatomy is an essential prerequisite for successful root canal treatment and endodontic surgery. Over the years, an ever-increasing body of knowledge related to root and canal anatomy of the human dentition has accumulated. To correct deficiencies in existing systems, a new coding system for classifying root and canal morphology, accessory canals and anomalies has been introduced. In recent years, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) have been used extensively to study the details of root and canal anatomy in extracted teeth and within clinical settings. This review aims to discuss the application of the new coding system in studies using micro-CT and CBCT, provide a detailed guide for appropriate characterization of root and canal anatomy and to discuss several controversial issues that may appear as potential limitations for proper characterization of roots and canals.

Abstract
Objectives The present study aims to compare the obturation quality of 2 confluence confirmation techniques in artificial maxillary first premolars showing Vertucci type II root canal configuration. Materials and Methods Thirty artificial maxillary premolars having Vertucci type II root canal configuration were made. They were divided into 3 groups according to the confluence confirmation technique as follows. Gutta-percha indentation (GPI) group (confluence confirmation using a gutta-percha cone and a K file); electronic apex locator (EAL) group (confluence confirmation using K files and EAL); and no confluence detection (NCD) group. In the GPI group and the EAL group, shaping and obturation were performed with the modified working length (WL). In the NCD group, shaping was performed without WL adjustment and obturation was carried out with an adjusted master cone. Micro-computed tomography was used before preparation and after obturation to calculate the percentage of gutta-percha occupied volume (%GPv) and the volume increase in the apical 4 mm. Data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test. Results Statistically significant difference was not found in terms of the %GPv from the apex to apical 4 mm. However, the NCD group showed a statistically significant volume increase compared with the EAL group (p < 0.05). Conclusions In terms of gutta-percha occupied volume, no significant difference was observed among the 3 groups. Confluence confirmation using an EAL in teeth with Vertucci type II configuration showed less volume increase during canal shaping compared with no confluence confirmation.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effect of the addition of surfactants to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on the removal of accumulated hard tissue debris (AHTD), before and after final irrigation with 17% EDTA, from mesial canals of mandibular molars through microcomputed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis. METHODOLOGY Thirty moderately curved mandibular mesial roots with Vertucci type II canal configuration were selected and scanned in a micro-CT device at an isotropic resolution of 22.9 μm. The specimens were assigned to three groups (n = 10) with respect to the root length, degree of curvature of the mesial root, volume and 3D anatomy of the root canals according to the irrigating solution used during root canal preparation: 2.5% NaOCl and 0.1% Benzalkonium Chloride, 2.5% NaOCl and 0.1% Tween 80 and 2.5% NaOCl without additives. The root canals were instrumented up to Reciproc R25 instrument. Then, the specimens were scanned again after canal preparation and after final irrigation with 17% EDTA, and the registered data sets were examined to evaluate the percentage of AHTD. For comparison between the different groups before and after using 17% EDTA, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used with a significance level of 5%. For comparison between the same groups before and after using 17% EDTA, the Wilcoxon test was used with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS None of the irrigant solutions tested was able to completely eliminate hard tissue debris from mesial canals of mandibular molars. There were no significant differences in the percentage of AHTD amongst the different irrigation solutions (P > 0.05). Final irrigation with 17% EDTA significantly reduced the percentage of AHTD (P < 0.05), without differences amongst the groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The addition of surfactants to NaOCl did not affect the removal of AHTD from mesial canals of extracted mandibular molars. Final irrigation with 17% EDTA significantly improved AHTD removal.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of endoscopic visualization to detect root canal anastomoses at the coronal half of the mesial root canals of mandibular molars using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) images as reference.Material and methods: Seventy-four mesial roots of mandibular first molars with (n = 47) or without (n = 27) intercanal anastomosis were selected based on the micro-CT scans of 269 mandibular first molars at a pixel size of 10 µm. The specimens were mounted on the mannequins and their root canals were evaluated using dental operating microscope (DOM) and endoscope. The endoscopic probe was inserted into the main mesial root canals and 2 blinded observers evaluated the presence of a divergence point of anastomosis (where the branching occurs) as 'present' or 'absent'. The scorings were compared with the three-dimensional reconstructed images of the specimens and recorded as 'correct' or 'incorrect' evaluation. Degree of agreement between evaluators was assessed with Kappa test and the accuracy of endoscopic visualization according to the presence and location of anastomosis was compared using Fisher exact tests with a significance threshold at 5%.Results: High inter-examiner reliability was reported (0.91). None of the divergence points were identified using DOM whereas 11 divergence points were detected using endoscope, corresponding the 23.4% of the intercanal anastomoses. The endoscope also showed the absence of an intercanal anastomosis correctly in all of the specimens without an anastomosis. Detectability of a divergence point using endoscope was not affected by its location within the coronal half of root canal (p > .05).Conclusions: The endoscopes were able to visualize the divergence points of 23.4% of the intercanal anastomoses located at the coronal halves of root canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Isthmuses are narrow communications between root canals, and form as the result of the merging of the two root canals widening in a buccolingual direction. This widening causes the high ovality of isthmuses. The shaping and cleaning of all root canal systems are regarded as one of the major difficulties in long-oval shaped root canals. This study aims to make quantitative analysis of Vertucci type II root canal systems following preparation with Self- Adjusting file (SAF), Reciproc or Revo-S. METHODS Major diameter and roundness values were measured at the level 1.2 mm from apical foramen before and after preparation. A 'post-preparation node' point was described when the minimum minor diameter value was smaller than major diameter of apical 1.2 mm. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey and Chi-square tests. RESULTS Preparation resulted in a significant increase in the major diameter values regardless of the instrumentation (p = 0.000). Preparation with Reciproc led to the significant increase in roundness values (p = 0.000), whereas no significant difference was detected in specimens prepared with SAF (p = 0.21) and Revo-S (p = 0.15). CONCLUSION Root canal preparation with SAF, Reciproc and Revo-S led to a significant increase in the major diameter of apical 1.2 mm and resulted in high frequencies of the post-preparation node.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate if the kinematics of engine-driven instruments affect the root canal shape. METHOD The systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD 42017077043). A broad search was performed for articles published before 26 September 2018 in the electronic databases: pubmed, scopus, web of science and Lilacs using MeSH and free terms. Only in vitro studies with human teeth that evaluated root canal shape by volume, surface area and unprepared surface area using reciprocating and rotary system assessed by micro-computed tomography were included. A modified checklist for randomized controlled trials from the Joanna Briggs Institute was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Twenty-one articles were selected. According to quality assessment, all studies were considered 'moderate methodological quality'. Eighteen articles analysed volume increase, only four studies showed statistically significant difference, three indicating that the reciprocating movement obtained a greater increase in volume than the rotary system and one rotary system obtained a greater increase. Twelve studies analysed surface area, only three studies showed statistically significant difference, two presented a reciprocating system revealing greater amount of surface area and one showed a rotary system obtained a greater amount of surface area. Ten articles evaluated unprepared surface area, two studies that analysed total length, one study presented that the rotary system revealed lower unprepared surface area while another study showed reciprocating with less unprepared area. One study analysed middle and apical third, and observed that the rotary system presented lower unprepared surface area in the middle third. CONCLUSIONS Both the rotary and reciprocating kinematics produce changes in volume and surface area and leave unprepared areas in the root canal, however reciprocating system showed greater increase of volume and surface area, while the rotary system maintains less unprepared surface area.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the prevalence of isthmi and middle mesial (MM) canals in the mesial roots of mandibular first molars (MFM) in a Mongoloid subpopulation and to evaluate their association with demographic and anatomic characteristics. Methods Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 496 patients with 823 MFMs were selected and analyzed. The following data were collected: patient age and gender, side, presence and distribution of MM canal and isthmus, distance between mesiobuccal (MB) and mesiolingual (ML) orifices, and MB–ML root canal system (RCS) morphology. Logistic regression was used to determine the association between demographic and anatomic characteristics and the presence of isthmi in the apical third. Results The overall prevalence of isthmus and an MM canal in MFM was 64.6% and 10.8%, respectively. The highest prevalence of isthmi and MM canals was found in patients of ≤ 20 and of 41–60 years, respectively (p < 0.05). The prevalence of isthmi declines with age. A total of 41.3% of the MFMs had isthmi in the apical third of the mesial roots. Younger age, shorter MB–ML orifice distance, and Weine type II RCS increased the probability of the presence of an isthmus in the apical third (p < 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of isthmus in MFM is high in the subject population, but the prevalence of MM canals is not as high as previously reported. Demographic and anatomic characteristics could aid clinicians to better predict the presence of MM canal and an isthmus.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of sonically and ultrasonically activated irrigation on removal of accumulated hard-tissue debris (AHTD) in mesial root canal systems of mandibular molars using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis. METHODOLOGY Forty mesial roots of mandibular molars with two independent canals joined apically by an isthmus (Vertucci type II) were selected. The root canals were instrumented using Reciproc R25 instruments, and specimens were scanned at a resolution of 10.5 μm. Subsequently, n = 10 roots were assigned to each of the four final irrigation groups such that the group means and variances were almost identical: sonically activated irrigation with EndoActivator (EA) or EDDY (ED), ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI) and manual irrigation without activation (MI). The final irrigation procedures were performed using a total of 5 mL 1% NaOCl and 5 mL 15% EDTA per canal over 5 min with activation time of 4 × 20 s. Reconstructed data sets were coregistered, and the mean percentage reduction of AHTD after final irrigation was compared statistically between groups using analysis of variance at a significance level set at 5%. RESULTS A significant reduction of AHTD was achieved after final irrigation in all groups (P < 0.05), ranging from 44.1% to 66.8%. The vol% of debris after irrigation was 3.7 ± 1.9% for EA, 3.3 ± 2.3% for ED, 2.1 ± 1.6% for UAI and 4.4 ± 2.3% for MI, with no significant difference between groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS None of the final irrigation protocols completely removed AHTD from mesial root canal systems in extracted human mandibular molars. Sonically and ultrasonically activated irrigation performed no better compared to manual irrigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness of the XP-endo Finisher instrument and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) as final irrigation protocols on the removal of accumulated hard-tissue debris (AHTD) from oval-shaped canals using micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) analysis. METHODS Twenty mandibular incisors were anatomically pair-matched based on similar morphological dimensions (length, volume, aspect ratio, and configuration) through micro-CT analysis, prepared with Reciproc R25 instrument, scanned again, and assigned to one of the two experimental groups (n = 10), according to the final irrigation protocol: XP-endo Finisher and PUI. After the final irrigation protocols, the specimens were rescanned and the registered datasets were examined to quantify the amount of AHTD. Data were statistically analyzed using Student's t test with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The final irrigation protocols were highly similar in terms of volumetric percentage reduction of AHTD (P = 1.000). CONCLUSIONS XP-endo Finisher and PUI showed the same effectiveness on the removal of AHTD. None of the tested final irrigation protocols completely removed the AHTD from oval-shaped root canals. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AHTD may be considered clinically relevant because it could harbor bacterial contents away from the disinfection procedures. Both final irrigation protocols were effective on the removal of AHTD.
