Abstract
In the world of science, in particular the section concerning the field of chemistry, when the results encountered during the experiment do not meet our expectations, our shrewdness may play an important role to open up new unexplored fields that could be much more interesting than what we were seeking. In those cases, our research undergoes an unforeseen shift, delivering novel and challenging results that may altogether alter our point of view and our future work. We have then struck serendipity. Specifically, in our investigation linked to palladacycles we have found that the new trends in their reactivity, as well as in their structure, have been, in many cases, related to this experience, broadening our research scope within this field. Herein, we describe our most relevant findings, which have shed new light upon the reactivity of palladacycles, thus opening new routes that lead to novel unexpected structures.

Abstract
Reactions of two dinaphthyl phosphines with [Cp*IrCl2]2 have been carried out. In the case of di(α-naphthyl)phenylphosphine (1a), a simple P-coordinated neutral adduct 2a is obtained. However, tert-butyldi(α-naphthyl)phenylphosphine (1b) is cyclometalated to form [Cp*IrCl(P^C)] (3b). Complexes 2a and 3a undergo further cyclometalation to give the corresponding double cyclometalated complexes [Cp*Ir(C^P^C)] (4a,b) upon heating. In the presence of sodium acetate, reactions of 1a,b with [Cp*IrCl2]2 directly afford the final double cyclometalated complexes (4a,b). In the absence of acetate, [Cp*RhCl2]2 shows no reaction with 1a,b, whereas with acetate the reactions form the corresponding single cyclometalated complexes [Cp*RhCl(P^C)] (5a,b), which react with t BuOK to form the corresponding rhodium hydride complexes (6a,b). Treatment of 4a with CuCl2 or I2 leads to opening of two Ir-C σ bonds to yield the corresponding P-coordinated iridium dihalide (7 or 8) by means of an intramolecular C-C coupling reaction. A new chiral phosphine (11) is formed by the ligand-exchange reaction of 8 with PMe3. Reactions of the single cycloiridated complex 3b with terminal aromatic alkynes result in the corresponding five- and six-membered doubly cycloiridated complex 12 and/or η2-alkene coordinated complexes 13-15; the latter discloses that the electronic effect of terminal alkynes affects the regioselectivity. While the single cyclorhodated complex 5b reacts with terminal aromatic alkynes to form the corresponding six-membered cyclometalated complexes 16a-c by vinylidene rearrangement/1,1-insertion. Plausible pathways for formation of insertion products 13-16 were proposed. Molecular structures of twelve new complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
The reaction of N-ortho-chlorophenyl-substituted acetylpyridine hydrazones (a and d) with K2[PtCl4] (n-butanol/water, 100 °C) gave mononuclear complexes 1a and 1d with the ligands as [N,N] bidentate. In contrast, the reaction of N-phenyl or N-meta-chlorophenyl hydrazones (b and c, respectively) under analogous reaction conditions gave the cycloplatinated species 2b and 2c with the ligand as [C,N,N] terdentate. The treatment of the mononuclear complexes 1a and 1d with NaOAc (n-butanol, 100 °C) gave the corresponding cycloplatinated complexes 2a and 2d. Acetophenone hydrazone platinacycle 2e was prepared in a similar fashion and its reaction with tertiary mono- and triphosphines gave mono- or trinuclear species depending on the reaction conditions. The X-ray crystal structures of some of these complexes showed interesting π-π slipped stacking interactions between metallacyclic rings which, according to NCI analyses, showed an aromatic character. With an aim to rationalize the different reactivities shown by acetylpyridine hydrazones and the precise role of the acetate anion, the energy profiles for the three main steps of cycloplatination (iminoplatinum complex formation, chelation and cyclometallation) have been determined by using the DFT (M06) methods. Calculations indicate that the cycloplatination of 1b proceeds via electrophilic substitution, involving the direct replacement of the chloride anion at the Pt(ii) centre with the N-phenyl moiety as the rate-determining step, to give an agostic intermediate 5b+ that, subsequently, leads to the elimination of a proton as hydrogen chloride. When present as an "external" base, acetate enters the coordination sphere around the Pt(ii) centre and facilitates hydrazone N-H deprotonation and electrophilic C-H activation through a dissociative route, leading to a Wheland-type σ-complex intermediate 9ac.

Abstract
A simple, high-concentration (up to 0.6 M Cu salt) synthesis of sub-10-nm copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) was developed in ethylene glycol at room temperature under ambient air conditions using 1-amino-2-propanol (AmIP) as the stabilizer. Monodispersed AmIP-Cu NPs of 3.5 ± 1.0 nm were synthesized in a high yield of ∼90%. Thus, nearly 1 g of sub-10-nm Cu NP powder was obtained using a one-step synthesis for the first time. It is proposed that metallacyclic coordination stability of a five-membered ring type between the Cu and AmIP causes the high binding force of Am IP onto the Cu surface, resulting in the superior stability of the AmIP-Cu NPs in a solution. The purified powder of AmIP-Cu NPs can be redispersed in alcohol-based solvents up to high Cu contents of 45 wt % for the preparation of Cu nanoink. The resistivity of the conductive Cu film obtained from the Cu nanoink was 30 μΩ cm after thermal heating at 150 °C for 15 min under a nitrogen flow. The long-term resistance stability of the Cu film under an air atmosphere was also demonstrated.

Abstract
We describe a Rh-catalyzed desymmetrization of all-carbon quaternary centers from α,α-bis(allyl)aldehydes by a cascade featuring isomerization and hydroacylation. This desymmetrization competes with two other novel olefin functionalizations that are triggered by C-H bond activation, including carboacylation and bisacylation. A BIPHEP ligand promotes enantioselective formation of α-vinylcyclopentanones. Mechanistic studies support irreversible and enantioselective olefin-isomerization followed by olefin-hydroacylation.

Abstract
The study of the reactivity of three 1-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-1H-pyrazole derivatives of general formula [1-(CH(2))(2)NMe(2)}-3,5-R(2)-pzol] {where pzol represents pyrazole and R=H (1a), Me (1b) or Ph (1c)} with [MCl(2)(DMSO)(2)] (M=Pt or Pd) under different experimental conditions allowed us to isolate and characterize cis-[M{κ(2)-N,N'-{[1-(CH(2))(2)NMe(2)}-3,5-R(2)-pzol])}Cl(2)] {MM=PtPt (2a-2c) or Pd (3a-3c)} and two cyclometallated complexes [M{κ(3)-C,N,N'-{[1-(CH(2))(2)NMe(2)}-3-(C(5)H(4))-5-Ph-pzol])}Cl] {M=Pt(II) (4c) or Pd(II) (5c)}. Compounds 4c and 5c arise from the orthometallation of the 3-phenyl ring of ligand 1c. Complex 2a has been further characterized by X-ray crystallography. Ligands and complexes were evaluated for their in vitro antimalarial against Plasmodium falciparum and cytotoxic activities against lung (A549) and breast (MDA MB231 and MCF7) cancer cellular lines. Complexes 2a-2c and 5c exhibited only moderate antimalarial activities against two P. falciparum strains (3D7 and W2). Interestingly, cytotoxicity assays revealed that the platinacycle 4c exhibits a higher toxicity than cisplatin in the three human cell lines and that the complex 2a presents a remarkable cytotoxicity and selectivity in lung (IC(50)=3 μM) versus breast cancer cell lines (IC(50)>20 μM). Thus, complexes 2c and 4c appear to be promising leads, creating a novel family of anticancer agents. Electrophoretic DNA migration studies in presence of the synthesized compounds have been performed, in order to get further insights into their mechanism of action.

Abstract
Orthopalladated complexes derived from (Z)-2-aryl-4-arylidene-5(4H)-oxazolones have been prepared by reaction of the oxazolone with palladium acetate in acidic medium. The reaction is regioselective, only the ortho C-H bond of the arylidene ring being activated, producing a six-membered ring. The scope and reaction conditions of the orthopalladation are dependent on the acidity of the solvent. In CF(3)CO(2)H a large number of oxazolones can be metalated under mild conditions. As acidity decreases a lesser number of oxazolones can be efficiently palladated and harsher conditions must be used to achieve similar yields. The C-H bond activation in acidic medium agrees with an ambiphilic mechanism, as determined from kinetic measurements at variable temperature and pressure for different oxazolones substituted at the arylidene ring. The mechanism has been confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, where the formation of the six-membered ring is shown to be favored from both a kinetic and a thermodynamic perspective. In addition, the dependence of the reaction rate on the acidity of the medium has also been accounted for via a fine-tuning between the C-H agostic precoordination and the proton abstraction reaction in the overall process occurring on coordinatively saturated [Pd(κ(N)-oxazolone)(RCO(2)H)(3)](2+).
