Abstract
Transition-metal-based hydrogenation catalysts have applications ranging from high-value chemical synthesis to medicinal chemistry. A series of (pyridinylmethyl)sulfonamide ligands substituted with electron-withdrawing and -donating groups were synthesized to study the influence of the electronic contribution of the bidentate ligand in Cp*Ir piano-stool complexes. A variable-temperature NMR investigation revealed a strong correlation between the electron-donating ability of the substituent and the rate of stereoinversion of the complexes. This correlation was partially reflected in the catalytic activity of the corresponding catalysts. Complexes with electron-withdrawing substituents followed the trend observed in the variable-temperature NMR study, thereby confirming the rate-determining step to be donation of the hydride ligand. Strongly electron-donating groups, on the other hand, caused a change in the rate-determining step in the formation of the iridium-hydride species. These results demonstrate that the activity of these catalysts can be tuned systematically via changes in the electronic contribution of the bidentate (pyridinylmethyl)sulfonamide ligands.

Abstract
![]()
A wide range of functionalized pyridine ligands have
been employed
to synthesize a variety of Pd(II) complexes of the general formulas
[PdL4](NO3)2 and [PdL2Y2], where L = 4-X-py
and Y = Cl– or NO3–. Their structures have been unambiguously established via analytical
and spectroscopic methods in solution (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry)
as well as in the solid state (X-ray diffraction). This in-depth characterization
has shown that the functionalization of ligand molecules with groups
of either electron-withdrawing or -donating nature (EWG and EDG) results
in significant changes in the physicochemical properties of the desired
coordination compounds. Downfield shifts of signals in the 1H NMR spectra were observed upon coordination within and across the
complex families, clearly indicating the relationship between NMR
chemical shifts and the ligand basicity as estimated from pKa values. A detailed crystallographic study
has revealed the operation of a variety of weak interactions, which
may be factors explaining aspects of the solution chemistry of the
complexes. The Pd(II) complexes have been found to be efficient and
versatile precatalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling
reactions within a scope of structurally distinct substrates, and
factors have been identified that have contributed to efficiency improvement
in both processes. A wide range
of pyridine derivatives have been employed
to synthesize a variety of di- and tetrasubstituted Pd(II) complexes
of square-planar geometry. This in-depth characterization has shown
that the functionalization of ligand molecules with groups of either
electron-withdrawing or -donating nature results in significant changes
in the physicochemical properties of the coordination compounds. Moreover,
the complexes have been found to be of practical utility as efficient
precatalysts for both Suzuki−Miyaura and Heck cross-coupling
reactions.

Abstract
This study investigated the interaction between B12N12 nano-cluster and carboplatin complex using B3P86 functional. Two interaction modes between B12N12 nano-cluster and carboplatin complex were considered. The bonding interaction between the B12N12 nano-cluster and carboplatin complex was examined through energy decomposition analysis (EDA). Also, Shubin Liu’s energy decomposition analysis (EDA-SBL) is used to study the source of energy differences between various isomers of B12N12 ... carboplatin complex. Charge transfer between fragments were illustrated with electrophilicity-based charge transfer (ECT) and extended charge decomposition analysis (ECDA). The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis was applied to assess the Pt-B and Pt-N bonds within B12N12 ... carboplatin complex.

Abstract
In this study, the MPW1PW91 method is applied to analyze the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, the electron localization function, and the localized-orbital locator in trans-(NHC)PtI2( para-NC5H4X) (X = H, F, COOH, CN, NO2, Me, OH, NH2) complexes. The substituent effect is assessed in the presence of electron-withdrawing groups and electron-donating groups and their influence on the Pt–C and Pt–N bonds of the molecules is analyzed using quantum theory of atoms in molecules, electron localization function, and localized-orbital locator methods. In addition, the eta index (η) is used to evaluate the Pt–C and Pt–N bonds in the studied complexes. The correlations between electron localization function, localized-orbital locator, and the η index values of Pt–C and Pt–N bonds with Hammett constants (σp) and dual parameters (σI and σR) are given.

Abstract
This study used mpw1pw91 quantum chemical calculations in gas and solution phases to clarify the interaction between C20and Cr(CO)5fragment. It also sought to clarify the effects of solvent polarity on dipole moment, structural parameters, and frontier orbital energies of the complex. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) was applied to analyze the bonding interaction between the C20and Cr(CO)5fragment. Percentage composition in terms of the defined groups of frontier orbitals for the complex was evaluated to characterize the metal–ligand bonds. The Cr–C bonds within the complex were examined using quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis. In order to determine the back-bonding effects in these bonds, QTAIM analysis was applied to calculate of the quadrupole polarization of the carbon atom.

Abstract
The nature of the NO-bond in the N-oxide group was investigated by means of combined theoretical calculations (including QTAIM and NBO approaches) and statistical analyses of the contents of crystal structure databases. The N-O bond in the N-oxide group should be classified as the NO donating bond with an important contribution of ON back-donation (of the π-electron type, when available). The visualization of the Laplacian of electron density in the region of an oxygen valence sphere suggests the presence of two lone pairs for the imine-N-oxide group (characterized by effective ON back-donation). A detailed bonding analysis performed by means of natural resonance theory indicates that the N→O bond is of an order of magnitude clearly greater than 1. In addition, the stability of the N→O bond in various N-oxides was estimated. The analyses of the hydrogen- and halogen-bonded complexes of the N-oxides reveal strong Lewis basicity of the N-oxide group. The formation of H- and X-bonding leads to N→O bond elongation due to its structural, topological and spectroscopic characteristics. Moreover, in pyridine-N-oxide, the electron-withdrawing -NO2 group additionally stabilizes the N→O bond, whereas the opposite effect can be observed for the electron-donating-NH2 substituent. This is due to a substituent effect on the π-type ON back-donation. As a result, the oxygen atom in pyridine-N-oxide may change its availability during intermolecular interaction formation, as revealed in the interaction energy, which changes by about half of the estimated total interaction energy.

Abstract
In this work, the structural, electronic properties, 13 C and 1 H NMR parameters and first hyperpolarizability of a chromium carbene ( OC )5 Cr = C ( OEt )(– C ≡ C – Ph ) complex were theoretically computed in gas phase and different solvents. Also, the solvent effect on structural parameters, frontier orbital energies, – C ≡ C – and C ≡ O stretching frequencies of complex has been carried out based on polarizable continuum model (PCM). The results indicate that the polarity of solvents has played a significant role on the structures and properties of complex. 1 H and 13 C NMR chemical shifts were calculated by using the gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) method. In analyzing the structural characteristics of this structure, Cr – CO and Cr – C carbene bonds were identified and characterized in detail by topological parameters such as electron density ρ(r) and Laplacian of electron density ∇2ρ(r) from Bader's atom in molecules theory.

Abstract
The hydrogen-hydrogen (H-H) bond or hydrogen-hydrogen bonding is formed by the interaction between a pair of identical or similar hydrogen atoms that are close to electrical neutrality and it yields a stabilizing contribution to the overall molecular energy. This work provides new, important information regarding hydrogen-hydrogen bonds. We report that stability of alkane complexes and boiling point of alkanes are directly related to H-H bond, which means that intermolecular interactions between alkane chains are directional H-H bond, not nondirectional induced dipole-induced dipole. Moreover, we show the existence of intramolecular H-H bonds in highly branched alkanes playing a secondary role in their increased stabilities in comparison with linear or less branched isomers. These results were accomplished by different approaches: density functional theory (DFT), ab initio, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and electron localization function (ELF).

Interactions between alkaline earth cations and oxo ligands. DFT study of the affinity of the Mg²+ cation for phosphoryl ligands. J Mol Model 2010; 17:2061-7. Abstract
DFT (B3LYP/6-31+G(d)) calculations of Mg(2+) affinities for a set of phosphoryl ligands were performed. Two types of ligands were studied: a set of trivalent [O = P(R)] and a set of pentavalent phosphoryl ligands [O = P(R)(3)] (R = H, F, Cl, Br, OH, OCH(3), CH(3), CN, NH(2) and NO(2)), with R either bound directly to the phosphorus atom or to the para position of a phenyl ring. The affinity of the Mg(2+) cation for the ligands was quantified by means of the enthalpy for the substitution of one water molecule in the [Mg(H(2)O)(6)](2+) complex for a ligand. The enthalpy of substitution was correlated with electronic and geometric parameters. Electron-donor groups increase the interaction between the cation and the ligand, while electron-acceptor groups decrease the interaction enthalpy.
