Abstract
BACKGROUND Extensive research is being carried out globally to design and develop new selenium compounds for various biological applications such as antioxidants, radio-protectors, anti-carcinogenic agents, biocides, etc. In this pursuit, 3,3'-diselenodipropionic acid (DSePA), a synthetic organoselenium compound, has received considerable attention for its biological activities. SCOPE OF REVIEW This review intends to give a comprehensive account of research on DSePA so as to facilitate further research activities on this organoselenium compound and to realize its full potential in different areas of biological and pharmacological sciences. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS It is an interesting diselenide structurally related to selenocystine. It shows moderate glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activity and is an excellent scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Exposure to radiation, as envisaged during radiation therapy, has been associated with normal tissue side effects and also with the decrease in selenium levels in the body. In vitro and in vivo evaluation of DSePA has confirmed its ability to reduce radiation induced side effects into normal tissues. Administration of DSePA through intraperitoneal (IP) or oral route to mice in a dose range of 2 to 2.5 mg/kg body weight has shown survival advantage against whole body irradiation and a significant protection to lung tissue against thoracic irradiation. Pharmacokinetic profiling of DSePA suggests its maximum absorption in the lung. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE Research work on DSePA reported in fifteen years or so indicates that it is a promising multifunctional organoselenium compound exhibiting many important activities of biological relevance apart from radioprotection.

Abstract
Abstract
Metal chalcogenides are technologically important materials. Physical, chemical, electrical and mechanical properties of these materials can be fine-tuned by manipulating their shape, size and composition. Although several methods are employed for their synthesis, single-source molecular precursor route has emerged as a versatile strategy for their synthesis and in controlling shape, size and composition of the material under moderate conditions. This chapter gives a brief coverage on the design and development of single-source molecular precursors which have been employed for the preparation of metal selenide/telluride nanocrystals and for deposition of thin films. The discussion includes synthesis of transition-, main group and f-block metal chalcogenolate and/or chalcogenide clusters as precursors and their conversion into metal chalcogenides in the form of thin films and nanostructures. Precursors for ternary metal chalcogenides are also included.

Abstract
The chiral dodecanuclear palladium(II) thio cluster LaPd12(C3H5NO2S)3(C3H6NO2S)21 (1) was prepared by reacting l-cysteine (l-Cys) with PdCl2 and La2O3 in aqueous solution under carefully controlled conditions. Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single-crystal XRD, TGA, IR, UV-vis, (13)C NMR, and CD spectroscopy. Insight into the dimerization process of 1 was obtained by ESI-MS and DFT calculations.

Abstract
The silylated organochalcogen reagents 1,2-(Me3SiSCH2)2C6H4, and 1,2-(Me3SiSeCH2)2C6H4, were prepared from the corresponding organobromides and lithium trimethylsilanechalcogenolate Li[ESiMe3] (E = S, Se). They have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, (77)Se) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. and react under mild conditions with (1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane)palladium(ii) chloride, [PdCl2(dppp)], to provide the dinuclear organochalcogenolate-bridged complexes [(dppp)2Pd2-μ-κ(2)S-{1,2-(SCH2)2C6H4}]X2, []X2 and [(dppp)2Pd2-μ-κ(2)Se-{1,2-(SeCH2)2C6H4}]X2, []X2 (X = Cl, Br) in good yield, respectively. Furthermore, the tetranuclear palladium complex [(dppp)4Pd4-μ-κ(4)S-{1,2,4,5-(SCH2)4C6H2}]X4, []X4 (X = Cl, Br) can be synthesized from the reaction of the tetrathiotetrasilane 1,2,4,5-(Me3SiSCH2)4C6H2, and [PdCl2(dppp)]. The structures of []X2, []X2 and []X4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. A variety of NMR experiments including two-dimensional homonuclear and heteronuclear correlated spectra were used to probe the solution behaviour of the dinuclear complexes in more detail. These complexes were further characterized by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and for []X2 and []X2, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy.

Abstract
Tri-nuclear allyl-palladium complexes, [Pd(μ-SeCH(2)CH(2)COOR)(η(3)-C(3)H(4)R')](3) (R = H, Me, Et and R' = H, Me), have been synthesized by the reaction of [Pd(2)(μ-Cl)(2)(η(3)-C(3)H(4)R')(2)] with NaSeCH(2)CH(2)COOR. These complexes exist in a dynamic equilibrium with a dimeric form in solution and are fluxional at room temperature as shown by variable temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The DFT calculations indicate that there is a negligible energy difference between the dimer and the trimer, and suggest that the delicate balance between the steric factors and angular strain decides the reaction products. These complexes (with R' = H) on treatment with [Pd(2)(μ-Cl)(2)(η(3)-C(3)H(5))(2)] afforded hetero-bridged complexes [Pd(2)(μ-Cl)(μ-SeCH(2)CH(2)COOR)(η(3)-C(3)H(5))(2)] (R = Me, Et). All the complexes have been characterized by NMR ((1)H, (13)C, (77)Se) spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [Pd(μ-SeCH(2)CH(2)COOEt)(η(3)-C(3)H(5))](3) revealed a chair conformation of the six-membered Pd(3)Se(3) ring, in which all the allyl groups lie at one side of the ring (similar to three axial 1,3,5-hydrogens of cyclohexane). Thermolysis of [Pd(μ-SeCH(2)CH(2)COOEt)(η(3)-C(3)H(5))](n) in diphenyl ether or hexadecylamine (HDA) yielded Pd(7)Se(4) as characterized by powder XRD.
