Abstract
Ferrocene is one of the most common electron donors, and mapping its ligand-field excited states is critical to designing donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules with long-lived charge transfer states. Although 3(d-d) states are commonly invoked in the photophysics of ferrocene complexes, mention of the high-spin 5(d-d) state is scarce. Here, we provide clear evidence of 5(d-d) formation in a bimetallic D-A molecule, ferrocenyl cobaltocenium hexafluorophosphate ([FcCc]PF6). Femtosecond optical transient absorption (OTA) spectroscopy reveals two distinct electronic excited states with 30 and 500 ps lifetimes. Using a combination of ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared probe pulses, we capture the spectral features of these states over an ultrabroadband range spanning 320 to 2200 nm. Time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the lowest triplet and quintet states, both primarily Fe(II) (d-d) in character, qualitatively agree with the experimental OTA spectra, allowing us to assign the 30 ps state as the 3(d-d) state and the 500 ps state as the high-spin 5(d-d) state. To confirm the ferrocene-centered high-spin character of the 500 ps state, we performed X-ray transient absorption (XTA) spectroscopy at the Fe and Co K edges. The Fe K-edge XTA spectrum at 150 ps shows a red shift of the absorption edge that is consistent with an Fe(II) high-spin state, as supported by ab initio calculations. The transient signal detected at the Co K-edge is 50× weaker, confirming the ferrocene-centered character of the excited state. Fitting of the transient extended X-ray absorption fine structure region yields an Fe-C bond length increase of 0.25 ± 0.1 Å in the excited state, as expected for the high-spin state based on DFT. Altogether, these results demonstrate that the high-spin state of ferrocene should be considered when designing donor-acceptor assemblies for photocatalysis and photovoltaics.

Abstract
The structure of the two intramolecular hydrogen-bonded motifs within ferrocene-1,1'-diyl-bisphosphinic acid, a cyclic dimer and a homoconjugated anion, has been experimentally revealed by NMR spectroscopy for a solution in a low-freezing polar aprotic CDF3/CDF2Cl medium at 100 K. Structure elucidation was achieved with the help of the H/D isotope effects on the 1H, 2H and, for the first time, 31P NMR chemical shifts. The questions of bridging hydron localization and origins of opposite signs of H/D isotope effects on the 31P NMR chemical shifts in the cyclic dimer and homoconjugated anion have also been addressed by DFT calculations, including numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation for proton and deuteron vibrations in the anharmonic double well potentials.

Dominant changes in centre Fe atom of decamethyl-ferrocene from ferrocene in methylation. Theor Chem Acc 2023. Abstract
AbstractStaggered decamethyl-ferrocene (*Fc) becomes the lower energy conformer at low temperature, whereas the eclipsed conformer of ferrocene (Fc) is more stable. The powerful infrared (IR) spectroscopy which has remarkably provided signatures of ferrocene (Fc) in eclipsed and staggered conformers recently is employed to investigate methylation of Fc. The most significant consequences of the full methylation of Fc in the IR spectra are the blue shift of the band at ~ 800 cm−1 in Fc to ~ 1500 cm−1 in *Fc, and the enhancement of the C–H stretch band at ~ 3200 cm−1 region in *Fc. Further analysis reveals large impact of Fc methylation on core electron energies of the centre Fe atom (1s22s22p63s23p6). The Fe core electron energy changes can be as large as ~ 10 kcal mol−1 and are directional—the Fe 2pz and 3pz orbitals along the *Cp–Fe–*Cp axis (Cp centroids, vertical) change more strongly than other Fe core electrons in px and py orbitals. The directional inner shell energy changes are evidenced by larger inner shell reorganization energy. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicates that methyl groups in *Fc apparently change the physical energy components with respect to Fc. The large steric energy of *Fc evidences that the closest hydrogens on adjacent methyl groups of the same *Cp ring in crystal structure are 0.2–0.4 Å closer than the hydrogens on nearest-neighbour methyl groups on opposing rings in *Fc. A significant increase in Pauli repulsive energy contributes to the large repulsive steric energy in *Fc.

Abstract
This work describes the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of two ferrocene derivatives with two anchoring groups (at the bottom and at the top of the SAM) deposited on ultraflat template-stripped gold substrates by cyclic voltammetry and analyzed by complementary surface characterization techniques. The SAM of each molecule is deposited by three different protocols: direct deposition (one step), click reaction on the surface (two steps), and reverse click reaction on the surface (two steps). The SAM structure is well studied to determine the SAM orientation, SAM arrangement, and ferrocene position within the SAM. Electron transfer kinetics have also been studied, which agree with the quality of each SAM. With the help of two anchoring groups and click-chemistry active functional groups, we have shown that the two molecules can be deposited by controlling the position of ferrocene at either end. We further investigated the involvement of the triazole five-membered ring in the electron transfer mechanism. We have found that a carbon spacer between ferrocene and triazole improves the SAM packing. This study enhances the understanding of tethering thiol and thiol acetate anchoring groups on gold by a controlled orientation, which may help in the development of functional molecular devices requiring two anchoring groups.

Abstract
The so far missing parent compound of the large family of pentaphosphaferrocenes [CpFe(η5 -P5 )] (1 b) was synthesized by the thermolysis of [CpFe(CO)2 ]2 with P4 using the very high-boiling solvent diisopropylbenzene. It was comprehensively characterized by, inter alia, NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray structure analysis, cyclic voltammetry and DFT computations. Moreover, its coordination behavior towards CuI halides was explored, revealing the unprecedented 2D polymeric networks [{CpFe(η5:1:1:1:1 -P5 )}Cu2 (μ-X)2 ]n (2 a: X=Cl, 2 b: X=Br) and [{CpFe(η5:1:1 -P5 )}Cu(μ-I)]n (3) and even the first cyclo-P5 -containing 3D coordination polymer [{CpFe(η5:1:1 -P5 )}Cu(μ-I)]n (4). The sandwich complex 1 b can also be incorporated in nano-sized supramolecules based on [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1 a) and CuX (X=Cl, Br, I): [CpFe(η5 -P5 )]@[{Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )}12 (CuX)20-n ] (5 a: X=Cl, n=2.4; 5 b: X=Br, n=2.4; 5 c: X=I, n=0.95). Thereby, the formation of the CuI-containing fullerene-like sphere 5 c is found for the first time.

Abstract
Ionic liquids are regarded as one of the most prodigious materials for sustainable technological developments with superior performance and versatility. Hence, in this study, we have reported the design and synthesis of electroactive disubstituted ferrocenyl ionic liquids (Fc-ILs) with two different counter anions and demonstrated the significance of their anion tuneable physicochemical characteristics towards multifunctional electrochemical applications. The Fc-IL synthesized with chloride counter anion (Fc-Cl-IL) displays water-solubility and can be used as a redox additive in the fabrication of supercapacitor. Supercapacitor device with Fc-Cl-IL based redox electrolyte exhibits outstanding energy and power densities of 91 Wh kg-1 and 20.3 kW kg-1, respectively. Meanwhile, ferrocenyl IL synthesized with perchlorate anion (Fc-ClO4-IL) exhibits water-insolubility and can serve as a redox mediator towards construction of a glucose biosensor. The biosensor comprising Fc-ClO4-IL is able to detect glucose at an exceptionally lower potential of 0.2 V, with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity. This study implies that the introduction of electroactive ILs could afford supercapacitor devices with high energy and power densities and biosensors with less detection potential.

Abstract
Several model stereoisomers such as ferrocene (Fc), methoxyphenol, and furfural conformers are discussed. It was discovered that the Fc IR spectroscopic band(s) below 500cm−1 serve as fingerprints for eclipsed (splitting 17 (471–488)cm−1) and staggered Fc (splitting is ~2 (459–461)cm−1) in the gas phase. It is revealed that in the gas phase the dominance of the eclipsed Fc (D5h) at very low temperatures changes to a mixture of both eclipsed and staggered Fc when the temperature increases. However, in solvents such as CCl4, eclipsed Fc dominates at room temperature (300K) due to the additional solvation energy. Intramolecular interactions of organic model compounds such as methoxyphenols (guaiacol (GUA) and mequinol (MEQ)) and furfural, ionization energies such as the carbon 1s (core C1s), as well as valence binding energy spectra serve this purpose well. Hydrogen bonding alters the C1s binding energies of the methoxy carbon (C(7)) of anti-syn and anti-gauche conformers of GUA to 292.65 and 291.91eV, respectively. The trans and cis MEQ conformers, on the other hand, are nearly energy degenerate, whereas their dipole moments are significantly different: 2.66 Debye for cis and 0.63 Debye for trans-MEQ. Moreover, it is found that rotation around the Cring–OH and the Cring–OCH3 bonds differ in energy barrier height by ~0.50 kcal⋅mol−1. The Dyson orbital momentum profiles of the most different ionic states, 25a′ (0.35eV) and 3a′ (−0.33eV), between cis and trans-MEQ in outer valence space (which is measurable using electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS)), exhibit quantitative differences. Finally, the molecular switch from trans and cis-furfural engages with a small energy difference of 0.74 kcal mol−1, however, at the calculated C(3)(–H⋅⋅⋅O=C) site the C1s binding energy difference is 0.105eV (2.42 kcal mol−1) and the NMR chemical shift of the same carbon site is also significant; 7.58ppm from cis-furfural without hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
The origin for the rotational barrier of organometallic versus inorganic sandwich complexes has remained enigmatic for the past decades. Here, we investigate in detail what causes the substantial barrier for titanodecaphosphacene through spin-state consistent density functional theory. Orbital interactions are shown to be the determining factor.

Abstract
A new approach is proposed for ferrocene phosphorylation using α-hydroxylalkylphosphonate as a “masked” phosphorylating agent, by electrochemical reduction of a ferrocene and (Me)2C(OH)P(O)(OC2H5)2mixture at −50 °C.

Abstract
Two very different quantum mechanically based energy decomposition analyses (EDA) schemes are employed to study the dominant energy differences between the eclipsed and staggered ferrocene conformers. One is the extended transition state (ETS) based on the Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) package and the other is natural EDA (NEDA) based in the General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System (GAMESS) package. It reveals that in addition to the model (theory and basis set), the fragmentation channels more significantly affect the interaction energy terms (ΔE) between the conformers. It is discovered that such an interaction energy can be absorbed into the pre-partitioned fragment channels so that to affect the interaction energies in a particular conformer of Fc. To avoid this, the present study employs a complete fragment channel—the fragments of ferrocene are individual neutral atoms. It therefore discovers that the major difference between the ferrocene conformers is due to the quantum mechanical Pauli repulsive energy and orbital attractive energy, leading to the eclipsed ferrocene the energy preferred structure. The NEDA scheme further indicates that the sum of attractive (negative) polarization (POL) and charge transfer (CL) energies prefers the eclipsed ferrocene. The repulsive (positive) deformation (DEF) energy, which is dominated by the cyclopentadienyle (Cp) rings, prefers the staggered ferrocene. Again, the cancellation results in a small energy residue in favour of the eclipsed ferrocene, in agreement with the ETS scheme. Further Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis indicates that all NBO energies, total Lewis (no Fe) and lone pair (LP) deletion all prefer the eclipsed Fc conformer. The most significant energy preferring the eclipsed ferrocene without cancellation is the interactions between the donor lone pairs (LP) of the Fe atom and the acceptor antibond (BD*) NBOs of all C–C and C–H bonds in the ligand, LP(Fe)-BD*(C–C & C–H), which strongly stabilizes the eclipsed (D5h) conformation by −457.6 kcal·mol−1.
