Synthetic Strategies of N-Heterocyclic Olefin (NHOs) and Their Recent Application of Organocatalytic Reactions and Beyond

N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) derivatives have an electron-rich as well as highly polarized carabon-carbon (C=C) double bond because of the electron-donating nature of nitrogen and sulphur atoms. While NHOs have been developing as novel organocatalysts and ligands for transition-metal complexes in various organic compound syntheses, different research groups are currently interested in preparing imidazole and triazolium-based chiral NHO catalysts. Some of them have been used for enantioselective organic transformations, but were still elusive. N-heterocyclic olefins, the alkylidene derivatives of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC), have shown promising results as effective promoters for numerous organic syntheses such as asymmetric catalysis, hydroborylation, hydrosilylation, reduction, CO2 sequestration, alkylation, cycloaddition, polymerization and the ring-opening reaction of aziridine and epoxides, esterification, C-F bond functionalization, amine coupling, trifluoromethyl thiolation, amination etc. NHOs catalysts with suitable structures can serve as a novel class of Lewis/Bronsted bases with strong basicity and high nucleophilicity properties.These facts strongly suggest their enormous chemical potential as sustainable catalysts for a wide variety of reactions in synthetic chemistry. The synthesis of NHOs and their properties are briefly reviewed in this article, along with a summary of the imidazole and triazole core of NHOs' most recent catalytic uses.

Reaction of a bis(pentafulvene)titanium complex with an N-heterocyclic olefin: C-H-activation leads to resonance between a titanium vinyl and titanium alkylidene complex

The N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) ImMe₄CH₂ (2) (ImMe₄CH₂ = (MeCNMe)₂CCH₂) was employed for the synthesis of the titanium complex 3 derived from an NHO ligand precursor. By reacting 2 with the bis(π-η⁵:σ-η¹-pentafulvene)titanium complex 1a, the terminal ylidic methylene unit of 2 is deprotonated by the quaternary exocyclic carbon atom of one pentafulvene ligand of 1a yielding the titanium complex 3 which bears an anionic NHO ligand (ImMe₄CH^-). 3 was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction and quantum chemical calculations. The latter highlight that 3 is best described as a titanium vinyl complex with significant contribution of the titanium alkylidene resonance structure.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

N-Heterocyclic Olefins as Robust Organocatalyst for the Chemical Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Value-Added Chemicals

In this report, the activity of N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) as a newly emerging class of organocatalyst is investigated for the chemical fixation of carbon dioxide through reactions with aziridines to form oxazolidinones and the N-formylation of amines with polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) or 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) as the reducing agent under mild conditions. The exocyclic carbon atoms of NHOs are highly nucleophilic owing to the electron-donating ability of the two nitrogen atoms. This high nucleophilicity of the NHOs activates CO2 molecules to form zwitterionic NHO-carboxylate (NHO-CO2 ) adducts, which are active in formylation reactions as well as the carboxylation of aziridines to oxazolidinones.

N-Heterocyclic Olefins as Organocatalysts for Polymerization: Preparation of Well-Defined Poly(propylene oxide)

The metal-free polymerization of propylene oxide (PO) using a special class of alkene—N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs)—as catalysts is described. Manipulation of the chemical structure of the NHO organocatalyst allows for the preparation of the poly(propylene oxide) in high yields with high turnover (TON>2000), which renders this the most active metal-free system for the polymerization of PO reported to date. The resulting polyether displays predictable end groups, molar mass, and a low dispersity (Đ(M)<1.09). NHOs with an unsaturated backbone are essential for polymerization to occur, while substitution at the exocyclic carbon atom has an impact on the reaction pathway and ensures the suppression of side reactions.

A theoretical investigation of substituent effects on the stability and reactivity of N-heterocyclic olefin carboxylates

Introduction of four phenyl groups at C-position and N-position not only favors decarboxylation but also ensures NHO as a strong nucleophile.
