Abstract
Novel anticancer strategies reduce side effects on healthy tissues by elevating the lethal abilities of cancer cells. The development of effective particles with good bioavailability and selectivity remains problematic. For undesirable features, green chemistry is used to synthesize the best compounds, or natural-based particles are improved. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), modelled on phthalocyanines (Pcs), still delivers second-generation sensitizers which are complemented with metal ions, such as Zn2+, Al3+, or Ga3+. Gallium octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide (Ga(OH)PcOC), was designed for skin cancer treatment, and was used as a pro-apoptotic and pro-oxidative agent on normal skin cell lines, fibroblasts (NHDF), and keratinocytes (HaCaT), with promising selectivity against melanoma cancer cells (Me45) in vitro. Compared to the previous reported findings, where the ZnPcOC acted on the skin cell lines at higher doses, the sensitivities to the Ga(OH)PcOC allows for an effective reduction of the sensitizer dose. The effective dose, for a novel Ga(OH)PcOC particle, was significantly reduced from 30 µM to 6 µM on Me45 cancer cells, tested using 24 h MTT viability, as well as cytometric pro-oxidative and pro-apoptotic assays. The promising photosensitizer did not reduce viability in normal fibroblasts and keratinocytes without reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevation or apoptosis induction. The improvement to the previous findings is better Ga-based photosensitizer selectivity against the cancer Me45 cells, then observed in Zn-based compounds.

Abstract
Although the sonophotodynamic method has an effective therapeutic outcome for anticancer treatment compared with the photodynamic method, there are not enough related studies in the literature and this study aims to contribute to the development of sonophotodynamic studies. For this purpose, the Schiff base substituted silicon phthalocyanines were designed and synthesized as effective sensitizer candidates and the photophysicochemical and sonophotochemical features of the phthalocyanines were examined to increase singlet oxygen efficiency. The calculated ΦΔ values indicate that the contribution of substituent groups improved the production of singlet oxygen compared with silicon (IV) phthalocyanine dichloride (SiPcCI2 ) and also the sonophotochemical applications increased the singlet oxygen yields. The ΦΔ values (ΦΔ = 0.76 for axially bis-{4-[(E)-(pyridin-3-ylimino)methyl]phenol} substituted silicon (IV) phthalocyanine (2a), 0.68 for axially bis-4-[(E)-{[(pyridin-3-yl)methyl]imino}methyl]phenol substituted silicon (IV) phthalocyanine (2b) in photochemical study) reached to ΦΔ = 0.98 for 2a, 0.94 for 2b in sonophotochemical study. This article will enrich the literature on increasing singlet oxygen yield.

Abstract
In this study, the new phthalonitrile derivative 3-(4-(3-oxobutyl)phenoxy)phthalonitrile (1) and its non-peripheral metallophthalocyanine derivatives [zinc (2), copper (3), cobalt (4), manganese (5), gallium (6), and indium (7)] were synthesized. The newly synthesized phthalocyanines were characterized by standard spectroscopic methods, such as FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopies, and MALDI-TOF spectrometry. Aggregation behaviors of the novel phthalocyanines were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The effect of pH change on the electronic and emission spectra of the newly synthesized phthalocyanine derivatives was studied in THF media. The electronic spectra of the new zinc (2), copper (3), and cobalt (4) phthalocyanines exhibited bathochromic shifts in acidic pH values due to the presence of monoprotonated forms. Surprisingly, the same effect was not observed for manganese (5) and indium (7) phthalocyanines. On the other hand, gallium (6) showed a slight red-shifted band with the addition of HCl to the medium. Also, it was determined that the synthesized zinc (2) and gallium (6) phthalocyanines had a selective phototoxic effect on the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line compared to the MCF-10A healthy breast cell line. The IC50 values of zinc (2) and gallium (6) phthalocyanines were determined for MCF-7 and MCF-10A cell lines. The IC50 values of MCF-7 for compounds 2 and 6 were found to be 1.721 ± 0.4 μg mL-1 and 7.406 ± 0.32 μg mL-1, respectively. The IC50 values of MCF-10A for phthalocyanines 2 and 6 were found to be 48.90 ± 0.69 μg mL-1 and 14.77 ± 1.09 μg mL-1, respectively. In the LDH (lactate dehydrogenase)-ELISA study, the LDH levels that formed on a cellular basis after the application were measured, and it was observed that the cells were directed towards apoptosis. In addition, it was observed that cancer cells underwent more apoptosis than healthy cells as a result of this application with cell-cycle and dead cell kits performed by flow cytometry. This research shows that non-peripheral substituted gallium and zinc phthalocyanine derivatives (2 and 6) can be suitable photosensitizers for the photodynamic treatment of breast cancers.

Abstract
This work describes the synthesis, spectral and fluorescence properties of bis 4-(4-formyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy) substituted zinc (ZnPc) and magnesium (MgPc) phthalocyanines. The new compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectra. Afterward, the effects of including metal ion on the photophysicochemical properties of the complexes were studied in biocompatible solvent DMSO to analyze their potential to use as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields were calculated as 0.04–0.15 and 0.70–0.52 for ZnPc and MgPc, respectively. According to the results, MgPc has higher fluorescence quantum yield than ZnPc, while ZnPc has higher singlet oxygen quantum yield than MgPc. The results show that the synthesized complexes can have therapeutic outcomes for cancer treatment.

Abstract
In this study, the synthesis and characterization of mono-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) (1-Cl and 1-F) [Lu[Formula: see text](AcO)(Pc)] (Pc [Formula: see text] phthalocyaninato, AcO [Formula: see text] acetate) and bis-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) (2-Cl and 2-Br) [Lu[Formula: see text]Pc[Formula: see text]] bearing halogenated (F, Cl and Br) phenoxy–phenoxy groups are described and verified by IR, [Formula: see text]H-NMR, UV-vis and mass spectrometry. Photochemical and photophysical properties of 1-F, 1-Cl 2-Cl and 2-Br in DMSO are also presented. A comparison between photophysical and photochemical parameters of mono and bis derivatives showed that mono phthalocyanines are better photosensitizers than bis phthalocyanines. Photophysical and photochemical properties of phthalocyanines are very useful for photodynamic therapy applications. Singlet oxygen quantum yields [Formula: see text] give an indication of the potential of the complexes as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy applications. The chloro, fluoro, bromo-phenoxy–phenoxy substituted mono-(phthalocyaninato) lutetium(III) complexes (1-Cl and 1-F) gave good singlet oxygen quantum yields (from 0.86 to 0.80) in DMSO. Thus, these complexes show potential as Type II photosensitizers for PDT of cancer.

Abstract
The context of this study is based on the synthesis of tetrakis{4-(2-([2,2[Formula: see text]:6[Formula: see text],2[Formula: see text]-terpyridine]Zn(II)-4[Formula: see text]-yl(methyl)amino)ethoxy)}phthalocyaninato zinc (II) (3) bearing four terpyridine-Zn(II) complexes that are directly linked through oxygen bridges to the macrocyclic core in order to create new supramolecular assemblies. The target phthalocyanine (3) was obtained by cyclotetramerization reaction of terpyridine-Zn (II) complex substituted phthalonitrile (2). All novel compounds synthesized in this study were fully characterized by general spectroscopic techniques such as FT-IR, UV-vis, and [Formula: see text]H-NMR, [Formula: see text]C-NMR, elemental analysis and mass spectroscopy. Spectral, photophysical (fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes) and photochemical (singlet oxygen production and photodegradation under light irradiation) properties of newly synthesized phthalonitrile (2) and its phthalocyanine derivative (3) as five nuclear phthalocyanine were investigated in DMSO solutions.

Abstract
This work describes the synthesis, spectral, aggregation and fluorescence properties of bis 4-[(4-tert-butylbenzyl)oxy substituted metal free (2), magnesium (3), zinc (4) and nickel (5) phthalocyanines. The syntheses of the novel compounds were confirmed by FT-IR, UV-vis, mass and NMR spectroscopy techniques, as well as elemental analysis. The effects of the nature of the central metal on the photophysical parameters of the phthalocyanine complexes are reported in this study. The photochemical properties (singlet oxygen quantum yields and photodegradation quantum yields) and photophysical properties (fluorescence behavior and fluorescence quantum yield) of the complexes were reported in different solutions (dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethyl formamide (DMF) and tetrahydrofuran (THF)). However, energy minimized structure, vibrational frequency, molecular orbital levels and electronic absorption spectra were obtained by DFT calculations which supported the experimental results.

Interactions of amino acids with aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide. Experimental and DFT studies. J Mol Model 2017; 23:51. Abstract
The influence of albumin and amino acids (L-serine, glycine, L-histidine, L-tryptophan, L-cysteine) on the properties of aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide (Al(OH)PcOC) was investigated in a phosphate buffer (pH 8.0). Particular attention was paid to the spectroscopic properties and photostability of Al(OH)PcOC. The effect of albumin or amino acids on the photodegradation of Al(OH)PcOC was examined in water using red light: 685 nm and daylight irradiation. Analysis of kinetic curves indicated that interaction with those molecules increases the photostability of Al(OH)PcOC. The molecular structure of Al(OH)PcOC complexes (in vacuum and in water) with axially or equatorially coordinated amino acids was studied by the B3LYP/6-31G* method, and the effects on molecular structure and electronic absorption spectrum were investigated on the basis of the density functional theory. The calculation results revealed that axial coordination significantly reduces the non-planarity of the phthalocyanine ring, and, thus, alters the electronic structure. On the other hand, hydrogen bonding of phthalocyanine side COOH groups with amino acids, in equatorial complexes, does not change the structure within the center of the phthalocyanine, and causes only a slight increase in UV-vis bands intensity, which is in perfect agreement with experimental data. Graphical abstract Structure of equatorial complex of Al(OH)PcOC with L-histidine calculated byB3LYP/6-31G(d) method. Dotted lines H-bonds.

Abstract
The new free and nickel phthalocyanine derivatives, tetrakis [(2-formylphenoxy)-phthalocyanine (4), tetrakis [(2-formylphenoxy)-phthalocyaninato]nickel(II) (5) have been synthesized via de-protection of tetra acetal-substituted phthalocyanines in acetic acid/FeCl3 system. The starting phthalocyanines, tetrakis [(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)phenoxy)-phthalocyanine (2) and tetrakis [(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)phenoxy)-phthalocyaninato]nickel (3), were prepared by the tetramerization of 4-(2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl) phenoxy) phthalonitrile (1). The new compounds have been characterized by the combination of FT-IR, (1)H NMR, UV-Vis, Mass spectra and elemental analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the Orthorhombic, space group Pbca with a = 9.2542 (4) Å, b = 13.3299 (5) Å, c = 23.2333 (11) Å, and Z = 8. Compound 1 is built up from two planar groups (phthalonitrile and phenoxy), with a dihedral angle of 69.693(36)° between them and non-planar dioxolane group. We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on molecule 1, as well. Geometric, spectroscopic and electronic properties of compound 1 has been calculated using B3LYP method and 6-311++G(dp) basis set. Fluorescence spectroscopy was applied to record the photoluminescence spectra of the prepared phthalocyanines and the photophysical and photochemical properties were examined in DMSO.

Abstract
The novel axially dicarborane substituted silicon (IV) (SiPc-DC) phthalocyanine was synthesized by treating silicon phthalocyanine dichloride SiPc(Cl)2 (SiPc) with o-Carborane monool. The compound was characterized by mass spectrometry, UV-Vis, FT-IR, (1)H and (11)B Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR). Spectral, photophysical (fluorescence quantum yield) and photochemical (singlet oxygen (ΦΔ) and photodegradation quantum yield (Φd)) properties of the complex were reported in different solutions (Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), Dimethylformamide (DMF) and Toluene). The results of spectral measurements showed that both SiPc and carborane cage can have potential to be used as sensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) by their singlet oxygen efficiencies (ΦΔ=0.41, 0.39).
