Abstract
N,N'-Diarylimidazolium salts containing haloalkyl functional groups that are reactive with various nucleophiles are considered to be promising reagents for the preparation of functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, which are in demand in catalysis, materials science, and biomedical research. Recently, 4-chloromethyl-functionalized N,N'-diarylimidazolium salts became readily available via the condensation of N,N'-diaryl-2-methyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes with ethyl orthoformate and Me3SiCl, but these compounds were found to have insufficient reactivity in reactions with many nucleophiles. These chloromethyl salts were studied as precursors in the synthesis of bromo- and iodomethyl-functionalized imidazolium salts by halide anion exchange. The 4-ICH2-functionalized products were found to be unstable, whereas a series of novel 4-bromomethyl functionalized N,N'-diarylimidazolium salts were obtained in good yields. These bromomethyl-functionalized imidazolium salts were found to be significantly more reactive towards various N, O and S nucleophiles than the chloromethyl counterparts and enabled the preparation of previously inaccessible heteroatom-functionalized imidazolium salts, some of which were successfully used as NHC proligands in the preparation of Pd/NHC and Au/NHC complexes.

Abstract
In this study, the high electrophilicity of carbonyl carbons attached to cationic heterocycles was observed. Triazolium-substituted esters underwent catalyst-free amidation with aliphatic amines at -50 °C and reduction with NaBH4 at -100 °C. The origin and generality of the high reactivity of these esters were systematically investigated. The findings of this work were utilized for the postmodification of N-heterocyclic carbenes, which are utilized as promising ligands in a wide range of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions.

Abstract
Eight novel carbohydrate-tethered trithiolato dinuclear ruthenium(II)-arene complexes were synthesized using CuAAC ‘click’ (Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition) reactions, and there in vitro activity against transgenic T. gondii tachyzoites constitutively expressing β-galactosidase (T. gondii β-gal) and in non-infected human foreskin fibroblasts, HFF, was determined at 0.1 and 1 µM. When evaluated at 1 µM, seven diruthenium-carbohydrate conjugates strongly impaired parasite proliferation by >90%, while HFF viability was retained at 50% or more, and they were further subjected to the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) measurement on T. gondii β-gal. Results revealed that the biological activity of the hybrids was influenced both by the nature of the carbohydrate (glucose vs. galactose) appended on ruthenium complex and the type/length of the linker between the two units. 23 and 26, two galactose-based diruthenium conjugates, exhibited low IC50 values and reduced effect on HFF viability when applied at 2.5 µM (23: IC50 = 0.032 µM/HFF viability 92% and 26: IC50 = 0.153 µM/HFF viability 97%). Remarkably, compounds 23 and 26 performed significantly better than the corresponding carbohydrate non-modified diruthenium complexes, showing that this type of conjugates are a promising approach for obtaining new antiparasitic compounds with reduced toxicity.

Abstract
The synthesis of heterobimetallic AuI /RuII complexes of the general formula syn- and anti-[{AuCl}(L1∩L2){Ru(bpy)2 }][PF6 ]2 is reported. The ditopic bridging ligand L1∩L2 refers to a P,N hybrid ligand composed of phosphine and bipyridine substructures, which was obtained via a post-functionalization strategy based on Diels-Alder reaction between a phosphole and a maleimide moiety. It was found that the stereochemistry at the phosphorus atom of the resulting 7-phosphanorbornene backbone can be controlled by executing the metal coordination and the cycloaddition reaction in a different order. All precursors, as well as the mono- and multimetallic complexes, were isolated and fully characterized by various spectroscopic methods such as NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. Photophysical measurements show efficient phosphorescence for the investigated monometallic complex anti-[(L1∩L2){Ru(bpy)2 }][PF6 ]2 and the bimetallic analogue syn-[{AuCl}(L1∩L2){Ru(bpy)2 }][PF6 ]2 , thus indicating a small influence of the {AuCl} fragment on the photoluminescence properties. The heterobimetallic AuI /RuII complexes syn- and anti-[{AuCl}(L1∩L2){Ru(bpy)2 }][PF6 ]2 are both active catalysts in the P-arylation of aryldiazonium salts promoted by visible light with H-phosphonate affording arylphosphonates in yields of up to 91 %. Both dinuclear complexes outperform their monometallic counterparts.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene and phosphine can be labeled as solid σ-donor ligands and can contribute to stable complexes. In addition, the constructed complex can accommodate a wide variety of applications, such as pharmaceutical products. In the light of this, a theoretical analysis was carried out on the existence of metal-drug interactions of group 11 metal ions in coordination with symmetrical unsaturated N-heterocyclic carbenes [NHC(R)(R')] and monodentate phosphine (PR3). The R substitutes on N atoms in NHC and phosphines are identical, and R' substitutes are located on two noncarbenic carbon atoms (C4 and C5) in the heterocycle complexes. All complexes are in general formula, [Tgt → ML] {where M = Cu(I), Ag(I), Au(I), Tgt = 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1-thio-β-d-glucopyranoside, L= [NHC(R)(R')], and PR3; R = F, Cl, Br, H, CH3, C2H5, SiH3, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl; R' = H and Ph} at the PBE-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory. Findings show greater tolerance for the release of drugs in the presence of Ag(I) metal ions than the other metal ions studied here. Applying natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIMs), energy decomposition analysis (EDA), and extended transition-state natural orbital for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis have been researched in order to ascertain the nature of M ← S and M ← C (M ← P) bonds in the complexes. Results have shown that σ donation from S to M atoms in [Tgt → MPR3] complexes is better and the π acceptor is weaker than the corresponding [Tgt → MNHC(R)(R')] complexes.

Abstract
A series of histidine derived Au(I) bis-NHC complexes bearing different ester, amide and carboxylic acid functionalities as well as wingtip substituents is synthesized and characterized. The stability in aqueous media, in vitro cytotoxicity in a set of cancer cell lines (MCF7, PC3 and A2780/A2780cisR) along with the cellular uptake are evaluated. Stability tests suggest hydrolysis of the ester within 8 h, which might lead to deactivation. Furthermore, the bis-NHC system shows a sufficient stability against cysteine and the thiol containing peptide GSH. The benzyl ester and amide show the highest activity comparable to the benchmark compound cisplatin, with the ester only displaying a slightly lower cytotoxicity than the amide. A cellular uptake study revealed that the benzyl ester and the amide could have different intracellular distribution profiles but both complexes induce perturbations of the cellular physiological processes. The simple modifiability and high stability of the complexes provides a promising system for upcoming post modifications to enable targeted cancer therapy.

Abstract
A post-synthetic strategy is reported that allows for functionalisation of Au(i)-bis NHCs via carbonate formation. The scope of this methodology was explored using both aromatic and aliphatic alcohols. As a demonstration of potential utility, the fluorescent Au(i)-bis NHC conjugate 5 was prepared; it was found to have enhanced stability when formulated with bovine serum albumin, localise within the mitochondria of A549 cells and do so without compromising the high cytotoxicity seen for the parent Au(i)-bis NHC system.

Abstract
Targeted delivery of potent cytotoxic drugs to cancer cells minimizes systemic toxicity and several side effects. NHC*-Au-Cl has already been proven to be a potent anticancer agent. In this study, we explore a strategy based on chemoselective cysteine conjugation of NHC*-Au-Cl to albumin and trastuzumab (Thiomab LC-V205C) to potentiate drug-ligand ratio, pharmacokinetics, as well as drug efficacy and safety. This strategy is a step forward towards the use of gold-based anticancer agents as targeted therapies.

Abstract
Ligand design has met with considerable success with both categories of hybrid ligands, which are characterized by chemically different donor groups, and of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). Their spectacular development and diversity are attracting worldwide interest and offers almost unlimited diversity and potential in e.g. coordination/organometallic main group and transition metal chemistry, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and materials science. This review aims at providing a comprehensive update on a specific class of ligands that has enjoyed much attention in the past few years, at the intersection between the two categories mentioned above, that of hybrid NHC ligands in which the functionality associated with the carbene donor is of the oxygen-donor type. For each type of oxygen-donor present in such chelating (Section 1) or bridging (Section 2) hybrid ligands, we will examine the synthesis, structures and reactivity of their metal complexes and their applications, with a special focus on homogeneous catalysis (Section 3). Thus, hydrogenation, C-H bond activation, C-C, C-N, C-O bond formation, hydrolysis of silanes, oligomerization, polymerization, metathesis, hydrosilylation, C-C bond cleavage, acceptorless dehydrogenation, dehalogenation/hydrogen transfer, oxidation and reduction reactions will be successively presented in a tabular manner, to facilitate an overview and a rapid identification of the relevant publications describing which metals associated with a given oxygen functionality are most suitable. The literature coverage includes the year 2015.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a series of new cationic gold(i) complexes with hydroxyl-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands is described. They are valuable building blocks for further derivatization: as a first example, coupling with amino acids and a dipeptide, respectively, successfully results in amino acid and peptide conjugates that are hard to obtain by other synthetic routes.

Abstract
It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Abstract
The current interest for platinum N-heterocyclic carbene complexes in cancer research stems from their impressive toxicity reported against a range of different human cancer cells. To date, the demonstration of their in vivo efficacy relative to that of established platinum-based drugs has not been specifically addressed. Here, we introduce an innovative approach to increase the NHC-Pt complex potency whereby multiple NHC-Pt(II) complexes are coordinated along a polyethylenimine polymer (PEI) chain. We show that such NHC-Pt(II)-PEI conjugates induce human cancer cell death in vitro and in vivo in a xenograft mouse model with no observable side effects in contrast to oxaliplatin. Additional studies indicate nucleus and mitochondria targeting and suggest various mechanisms of action compared to classical platinum-based anticancer drugs.
