Two synthetic routes to bis(1-methyl-imidazole-2-thione)methane and bis(1-benzyl-imidazole-2-thione)methane complexes including sulfur atom insertion into copper−NHC bonds

Organo Chalcogenone-Triggered Luminescent Copper(I) Clusters for Light Emitting Applications

A novel organo sulfur and selenium-controlled emission behavior in discrete copper(I) clusters has been demonstrated for the first time. The pentanuclear [Cu5Br5(L1)2] (1), trinuclear [Cu3Br3(L2)2] (2), dinuclear [Cu2I2(L1)2] (3), and tetranuclear [Cu4I4(L2)2CH3CN] (4) copper(I) discrete clusters have been synthesized from the reaction between L1 [L1 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-thione] or L2 [L2 = 1-isopropyl-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-imidazol-2-selone] chelating ligands and corresponding copper(I) halide salts. These new clusters have been characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, thermogravimetric analysis, and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 consists of abundant d10-d10 interactions. The structural and bonding features of clusters have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. Notably, the L2-ligated 2 and 4 are poorly emissive, while L1-ligated 1 and 3 showed strong emission in the orange and green regions, respectively. The time-dependent density functional theory natural transition orbital calculations of 1 and 3 reveal the nature of the transitions contributed by 3MLCT/3LLCT/3ILCT. Photoluminescence quantum yields of 1 and 3 are 19 and 11%, with average lifetimes of 21.55 and 6.57 μs, respectively. 1 and 3 were coated on prototype LED bulbs for light-emitting performance.

Important Counteranion Effect on Adsorption Efficacity of Hydrogen Sulfide by Silver(I)-Dithione Coordination Polymers

Four new coordination polymers (CPs) have been prepared and evaluated for their efficacy in adsorbing hydrogen sulfide. The reactions of the structurally flexible assembling dithione ligand, L, with different silver(I) salts lead to four new metal-organic coordination architectures (CPs I, III, V, and VIII) exhibiting either one- or two-dimensional networks. CP I, 2D-[(Ag2Cl2)L]n, exhibits a linear series of rhomboid (S)2Ag(μ2-Cl)2Ag(S)2 secondary building units (SBUs) where S is one of the thione functions of L, altogether forming a 2D-network. CP III, 2D-[(AgI)L]n, is built upon parallel staircase-shaped 1D-[Ag2(μ3-I)2]n SBUs bridged by S atoms of L that form a 2D-grid. CP V, 2D-[(AgL)(NO3)]n, presents parallel 1D-folded S-shaped [AgL]n+ chains linked by strong argentophilic Ag···Ag interactions, forming a 2D-scaffolding. CP VIII, 1D-[(Ag2L3)(Cr2O7)]n, shows 1D-zigzag [{Ag(η2-μ2,η-μ,μ-L)}2]n2n+ chains accompanied by Cr2O72- counteranions. The adsorption isotherms of H2S gas by these new CPs were examined and compared to those of related CPs [(Ag2Br2)L]n (II), [(AgCN)4L]n (IV), [(Ag2L)(CF3SO3)2]n (VI), and [(Ag2L)(NO3)(ClO4)]n (VII). Among the tested polymers, the 3D-CP IV featuring cyanide anions exhibits the highest adsorption capacity of the CPs studied in this work. In order to determine the reason for this marked difference, density functional theory (DFT) computations were used. All in all, it turns out that the electrostatic interactions (CN-···H-SH) are significantly stronger than the O-···H-SH ones. This investigation provides a valuable conceptual tool for other designs of CPs and MOFs having the purpose of capturing toxic gases.

Chemotherapeutic Activities of New η6-p-Cymene Ruthenium(II) and Osmium(II) Complexes with Chelating SS and Tridentate SNS Ligands

A series of new chelating bidentate (SS) alkylimidazole-2-thione-Ru(II)/Os(II) complexes (3ai, 3aii, 3aiii, 3bii/4aiii, 4bi, 4bii), and the tridentate (SNS) pyridine-2,6-diylimidazole-2-thione-Ru(II)/Os(II) complexes (5bi, 5civ/6bi, 6ci, 6civ) in the forms [MII(cym)(L)Cl]PF6 and [MII(cym)(L)]PF6 (M = Ru or Os, cym = η6-p-cymene, and L = heterocyclic derivatives of thiourea) respectively, were successfully synthesized. Spectroscopic and analytical methods were used to characterize the complexes and their ligands. Solid-state single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed a "piano-stool" geometry around the Ru(II) or Os(II) centers in the respective complexes. The complexes were investigated for in vitro chemotherapeutic activities against human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) and the non-cancerous cell line (Hek293) using the MTT assay. The compounds 3aii, 5civ, 5bi, 4aiii, 6ci, 6civ, and the reference drug, 5-fluorouracil were found to be selective toward the tumor cells; the compounds 3ai, 3aiii, 3bii, 4bi, 4bii, and 6bi, which were found not to be selective between normal and tumor cell lines. The IC50 value of the tridentate half-sandwich complex 5bi (86 ± 9 μM) showed comparable anti-proliferative activity with the referenced commercial anti-cancer drug, 5-fluorouracil (87 ± 15 μM). The pincer (SNS) osmium complexes 6ci (36 ± 10 μM) and 6civ (40 ± 4 μM) were twice as effective as the reference drug 5-fluorouracil at the respective dose concentrations. However, the analogous pincer (SNS) ruthenium complex 5civ was ineffective and did not show anti-proliferative activity, even at a higher concentration of 147 ± 1 μM. These findings imply that the higher stability of the chelating (SS) and the pincer (SNS) ligand architectures in the complexes improves the biological (anti-proliferative) activity of the complexes by reducing the chance of ligand dissociation under physiological conditions. In general, the pincer (SNS) osmium complexes were found to be more cytotoxic than their ruthenium analogues, suggesting that the anti-proliferative activity of the imidazole-2-thione-Ru/Os complexes depends on the ligand's spatial coordination, the nature of the metal center, and the charge of the metal complex ions.

A greener approach towards the synthesis of N-heterocyclic thiones and selones using the mechanochemical technique

This manuscript describes the synthesis of N-heterocyclic thiones and selones of a variety of imidazolium salts involving an eco-friendly and solventless ball-milling technique. The products have been isolated in almost quantitative yield, involving a minimum quantity of solvents only for the isolation of products by column chromatography, and in some cases for purification purposes. Both mono- and bisimidazolium salts afforded N-heterocyclic thiones and selones. The methodology is found to be superior in terms of reaction time, yield and energy efficiency as compared to conventional solution-state reactions.

The key role of R-NHC coupling (R = C, H, heteroatom) and M-NHC bond cleavage in the evolution of M/NHC complexes and formation of catalytically active species

Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Synthesis and dye adsorption studies of the {dibromo(1,1′-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis(3-methyl-imidazole-2-thione)dicopper(i)}n polymer and its conversion to CuO nanospheres for photocatalytic and antibacterial applications

A new copper polymer was used as a dye adsorbent and CuO precursor. The CuO nanospheres showed good performances for photocatalytic and antibacterial applications.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

Fast Synthesis of Iridium(III) Complexes Incorporating a Bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide Ligand for Efficient Pure Green OLEDs

Bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (Stpip) containing phosphor-sulfur (P═S) bonds was used as an ancillary ligand for three pure green iridium(III) emitters Ir1, Ir2, and Ir3, which were synthesized in few minutes at room temperature with high reaction yields above 70%. All these complexes show good thermal stability and excellent sublimation yields of around 80-90%, which are considered beneficial for industry practical production and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) fabrication. The emission profiles of these complexes meet the green standards of CIE1931 with coordinates of (0.33, 0.63), (0.33, 0.62), and (0.34, 0.62), respectively, and high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 98% are achieved. Utilizing these complexes as emissive dopants, these OLEDs exhibited high current efficiency up to 91.94 cd A^-1, external quantum efficiency up to 26.52%, and power efficiency up to 92.60 lm W^-1 with very small efficiency roll-off, without adopting internal or external out-coupling methods. These results indicate that Stpip is a potentially suitable ligand scaffold for highly efficient phosphorescent Ir(III) emitters that endow corresponding OLEDs with high efficiency and small roll-off.

Role of C, S, Se and P donor ligands in copper(i) mediated C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions

The first comparative study of C, S, Se and P donor ligands-supported copper(i) complexes for C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions are described. The syntheses and characterization of eight mononuclear copper(i) chalcogenone complexes, two polynuclear copper(i) chalcogenone complexes and one tetranuclear copper(i) phosphine complex are reported. All these new complexes were characterized by CHN analysis, FT-IR, UV-vis, multinuclear NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The single crystal X-ray structures of these complexes depict the existence of a wide range of coordination environments for the copper(i) center. This is the first comparative study of metal–phosphine, metal–NHC and metal–imidazolin-2-chalcogenones in C–N and C–Si bond formation reactions. Among all the catalysts, mononuclear copper(i) thione, mononuclear copper(i) N-heterocyclic carbene and tetranuclear copper(i) phosphine are exceedingly active towards the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles as well as for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling of alkynes with silanes. The cross-dehydrogenative coupling of terminal alkynes with silanes represents the first report of a catalytic process mediated by metal–imidazolin-2-chalcogenones.
