Protocol for Sonogashira coupling of alkynes and aryl halides via nickel catalysis

Alkynes are widely present in natural products and pharmaceutical compounds. Here, we present a protocol for nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of terminal alkynes with aryl iodides or bromides for constructing a C(sp2)-C(sp) bond. We describe steps for reagent preparation, reaction setup, purification process, and product characterization. We also detail procedures for obtaining a single crystal of 6-(phenylethynyl)-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1H-indole (3b). The application of this protocol is limited to aryl bromide and iodide. Efficiency of zero-dimensional and two-dimensional graphene architectural nanocomposites for organic transformations in the contemporary environment: a review

Graphene derivatives-based nanocatalyst finds increasing utilisation in the catalysis field for organic transformations. Researchers have been working on the development of graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene quantum dots with metal or metal oxide nanocomposites over the last few years. These materials exhibit excellent electrical, catalytic, optical, thermal, and magnetic properties. In particular, GO/rGO/GQDs composites assisted by metal or metal oxides have attracted broad attention for their possible applications in organic compound synthesis, drug delivery, sensors, devices, and the related areas of the environment. In this review, we have summarised GO/rGO/GQDs-metal or metal oxide composites using catalyst for organic conversions and synthesis of organic compounds in accordance with the discussion on the key problems and prospects for future study. Furthermore, there is a significant function for the catalytic efficiency of composites assisted by metal or metal oxide nanocatalyst which is categorised by graphene derivatives bases.

Three component synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones using GO/SiO2/Co (II)

In this study, a functionalized graphene oxide catalyst (GO/f-SiO₂/Co) was successfully synthesized by decorating the graphene oxide surface using the attachment of hybrid silane (silica/nitrogen) and chelation with Co (II). The catalyst has been characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectra, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Thermal Gravimetric (TGA) analyses. The synthesized catalyst was used as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-trione and spiro triazolo[1,2-a]indazole-tetraones derivatives under solvent-free conditions at 90 °C. The high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, and ability of the catalyst to recycle make the catalyst favorable. In addition, easy work-up procedure and short reaction time with high conversion yields (91-97%) are some benefits of the current method.

Nickel catalysts in Sonogashira coupling reactions

Nickel has emerged as a desirable substitute for palladium in Sonogashira coupling reactions due to its abundance, less toxicity and high catalytic activity. Ni complexes have been developed to catalyse C(sp)-C(sp2) and C(sp)-C(sp3) Sonogashira couplings that find applications in the synthesis and modifications of biologically relevant molecules. This review focuses on the catalytic potential and mechanistic details of various Ni complexes employed in the Sonogashira coupling. These include homogeneous catalytic systems with Ni-phosphorus and Ni-nitrogen catalysts, ligand-free catalysts, and carbonylative coupling strategies. Various heterogeneous catalytic systems using supported Ni complexes, Ni nanoparticles and Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts have also been discussed. This is the first review reported so far dealing exclusively with Ni-catalysed Sonogashira coupling reactions. This review illustrates the current strategies and potential of Ni-catalysed Sonogashira coupling reactions in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, and covers the literature up to 2020.

Copper-free Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions: an overview

The Sonogashira reaction is a cross-coupling reaction of a vinyl or aryl halide with a terminal alkyne to form a C-C bond. In its original form, the Sonogashira reaction is performed with a palladium species as a catalyst while co-catalyzed by a copper species and a phosphine or amine. The reaction is conducted under mild conditions, i.e., room temperature, aqueous solutions, and the presence of mild bases. Undeniably, the Sonogashira reaction is among the most competent and efficient reactions widely used in organic synthesis. This named reaction has proved useful in many organic synthesis areas, including the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, heterocycles, natural products, organic compounds, complex molecules having biological activities, nanomaterials, and many more materials that we use in our daily lives. The presence of transition metals as a catalyst was indeed essential in the Sonogashira reaction. However, recently, the reaction has been successfully conducted without copper as a co-catalyst and phosphines or amines as bases. In this critical review, we have focused on developments in the Sonogashira reaction successfully performed in the absence of copper complexes, phosphines or amines, which could be of particular advantage in implementing green chemistry principles and making the reactions more achievable from an economic viewpoint.

A New ternary organometallic Pd(ii)/Fe(iii)/Ru(iii) self-assembly monolayer: the essential ensemble synergistic for improving catalytic activity

The synergistic catalytic effect in a hetero-trimetallic catalytic monolayer is one of the intriguing topics because the additive effects of the second or third component play an important role in improving the activity. In this paper, a new Schiff-base organometallic nanosheet containing Pd/Fe/Ru immobilized on graphene oxide (GO@H-Pd/Fe/Ru) was prepared and characterized. The catalytic performance of GO@H-Pd/Fe/Ru and synergistic effect were systematically investigated. GO@H-Pd/Fe/Ru was found to be an efficient catalyst with higher turnover frequency (TOF) (26 892 h-1) and stability with recyclability of at least 10 times in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The deactivation mechanism was caused by the aggregation of the active species, loss of the active species, the changes of the organometallic complex, and active sites covered by adsorbed elements during the catalytic process. GO@H-Pd/Fe/Ru was a heterogeneous catalyst, as confirmed by kinetic studies with in situ FT-IR, thermal filtration tests and poisoning tests. The real active center containing Pd, Ru and Fe arranged as Fe(iii)-Ru(iii)-Pd(ii)-Fe(iii) was proposed. Although Ru(iii) and Fe(iii) were shown to be less active or inactive, the addition of Fe and Ru could effectively improve the entire activity by their ''indirect'' function, in which Fe or Ru made Pd more negative and more stable. The ensemble synergistic effect between metals, the ligand and support was described as a process in which the electron was transferred from GOvia ligand to Ru, and then to Pd or from Fe to Pd to make Pd more negative, promoting the oxidation addition with aryl halide. Also, the vicinity of Ru around Pd as the promoter adsorbed aryl boronic acid, which facilitates its synergism to react with the oxidation intermediate to the trans-metallic intermediate.

Design of Carbon-carbon and Carbon-heteroatom Bond Formation Reactions under Green Conditions

The development of C-C and C-heteroatom (C-N, C-O and C-P) bond reactions is a field of significant interest and has received momentous attention in modern organic chemistry. These reactions have been exploited in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and molecules of interest in materials science. With the increasing awareness of global warming and the use of renewable energies, it is of paramount importance to reduce the usage of hazardous chemicals in both industrial and academic research and to achieve a healthier environment through green practices. Green chemistry is a rapidly emerging approach that shows us a path for the sustainable growth of future science and technologies. In the recent past, healthy growth has been recorded in a number of organic reactions in aqueous media, which are environment-friendly and energy conserving. This review documents the literature on the development of green methodologies involving the design of C-C, C-O, C-N and C-P bond formations of coupling and condensed reactions. It emphasizes the exceptional practices and important advances achieved using alternative green tools, such as microwave (MW), high-speed ball milling (HSBM) and ultrasound irradiation techniques, and a variety of reusable catalysts and green solvents, with attention to water.
