Are YouTube videos related to dental implant useful for patient education?

A Social Media Content Analysis of Dental Health Information Involving the Use of Miswak (Salvadora persica) Chewing Stick on YouTube™

Background The widespread availability of Internet access and the rising popularity of social media platforms have facilitated the dissemination of health-related information, including dental health practices. However, assessing the quality and effectiveness of such information remains a challenge, particularly concerning traditional practices such as Miswak (Salvadora persica) usage. This study aims to assess the description, use, and effectiveness of the Miswak (Salvadora persica) chewing stick posted as video clips on YouTube™ and provide considerations for future interventions. Methodology YouTube videos were searched using the terms "Miswak," "Siwak," "Salvadora persica," and "Chewing stick." Each video's descriptive features, i.e., title, links, country of origin, upload date, running time, views, comments, likes, and dislikes, were recorded. Content quality was assessed using the DISCERN tool, which rates the reliability, dependability, and trustworthiness of online sources across 16 items. Scores were aggregated for analysis. The statistical analysis examined video features and associations between the speaker, video type, source, and quality, with significance set at a p-value <0.05 using SPSS Statistics Version 20 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results A total of 45 videos were included in the study, with the majority (62%) created by the "other professionals" category. Almost three-quarters (73.3%) of the videos were educational. The quality of the video clips was correlated with the speaker source and category of "other," revealing that high-quality information was considered such when the source was other than a dentist. Further, we found that a video's source did not elicit differences in the opinion of the video's quality. Conclusions This social media analysis provides considerations and implications for future research on the potential use of YouTube as a platform for Miswak educational interventions.

YouTube™ as a source of parents' information for craniosynostosis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the content, reliability and quality levels of YouTube™ videos regarding craniosynostosis for parents' information.

METHODS

A keyword search for 'craniosynostosis' was conducted on YouTube, and the uniform resource locators of the first 160 videos were initially recorded and evaluated. Ninety-four videos that met the inclusion criteria were analysed. Each video received a score ranging from 0 to 9 points, classifying them as low-content (0-3), moderate-content (4-6) and high-content (7-9). The reliability scores adapted from DISCERN and Global Quality Scale (GQS) scores were recorded.

RESULTS

The median content score for the videos was 4. According to the content scores, 34% of included videos (n = 32) were classified as low-content, 60.6% (n = 57) as moderate-content, and 5.3% (n = 5) as high-content. The median reliability score for the videos was 3, and the median GQS score was 3. The reliability and quality levels of videos classified as high-content and moderate-content were significantly superior to low-content videos (P < .05). Laypersons were identified as the most frequent source of information in the videos. However, most of the videos lacked information about syndromic/non-syndromic forms and specific complications. The importance of early referral/timing of surgery and minimally invasive surgical treatment techniques was mentioned in all high-content videos.

CONCLUSION

The results of the present study suggest that YouTube™ in its current format, is not a fully trustable source for parents seeking information on craniosynostosis. Craniofacial units must increase the content, quality and reliability level of videos on craniosynostosis.

Evaluation of the usefulness and quality of YouTube™ videos about children's electric toothbrushes

OBJECTIVES

The effectiveness of mechanical tooth cleaning, which plays a crucial role in biofilm control, depends on the type of brush and technique. Parents can refer to websites such as YouTube™ for guidance on the selection and use of electric toothbrushes. The objective of this study was to examine the usefulness, quality and accuracy of the information on YouTube™ videos about electric toothbrushes for children.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A search was performed on YouTube™ for English language videos using the terms 'electric toothbrush for kids' and 'kids' electric toothbrush'. From the first 100 results, 64 videos were selected for further analysis. The videos were analysed for views, likes/dislikes, number of comments, upload source, duration and time since video upload. The usefulness and the quality of the selected videos were also measured.

RESULTS

The majority of the videos mentioned toothbrush design (71.9%, n = 46) and toothbrush heads (62.5%, n = 40). The videos were generally determined to be moderately useful (46.9%), whereas very useful videos were found less frequently (12.5%). Slightly useful videos were mostly uploaded by laypeople. Very useful videos had significantly higher video durations than moderately and slightly useful videos (p = 0.029 and p = 0.002, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

YouTube™ can be an important source of information for parents to learn about electric toothbrushes for their children. However, watching videos based on upload source and length of time may provide more accurate information on this topic. Also, dental healthcare professionals could be included more often to improve the usefulness and quality of the videos.

Critical appraisal of YouTube videos regarding peri-implant diseases and conditions: A cross-sectional analysis

PURPOSE

To critically appraise the quality and reliability of YouTube videos regarding peri-implant diseases and conditions as a source of information for patients, students, and young clinicians.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In March 2023, electronic searches were performed on YouTube website to identify videos related to peri-implant diseases and conditions. We considered only the relevant 250 English-language videos with durations between 3 and 30 min for final analyses. Following the eligibility criteria videos were evaluated for their demographic data, including number of views; number of likes, dislikes, and comments; days since upload; duration; and number of subscribers. Moreover, two assessors independently evaluated the quality and reliability of the included videos using the DISCERN and Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI) tools. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis (∝ = 0.05).

RESULTS

A total of 69 videos were included for profound analyses. The average DISCERN and VIQI scores were 35.04 ± 6.3 and 14.18 ± 2.46, with 53 videos categorized as "poor" quality using the DISCERN tool. A Spearman rank correlation analysis presented a strong agreement between the DISCERN and VIQI scores (r = .753; p < .001). Nevertheless, based on different sources of upload, no statistically significant differences were reported for video demographics, interaction index, and DISCERN and VIQI scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Although YouTube videos on peri-implant diseases and conditions present accurate preliminary information, their reliability still remains uncertain. Hence, we urge respective policymakers to recognize, endorse and produce high-quality videos for accurate information dissemination.

Are YouTube videos on complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses useful for patient education?

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses have gained substantial popularity as a treatment option for patients with edentulism or a failing dentition. While YouTube is a leading source of health-related information videos, the usefulness and quality of videos on YouTube about complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses are unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of videos on complete arch fixed implant-supported prostheses and assess their usefulness for the general population as an educational resource.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

An electronic search for "complete arch fixed treatment using dental implants" was conducted on YouTube on October 10, 2021. The videos in English with a duration between 4 and 20 minutes were considered for the analysis. A total of 89 videos were subjected to quantitative analysis by using a usefulness score. Additionally, to evaluate video quality, 5-point global quality scale (GQS) criteria were applied. A 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare mean scores among different subgroups. The Pearson correlation analysis investigated the relationship among the usefulness score, GQS score, and video demographics, which include video content, source, type (academic or nonacademic), total views, and upload days (the days since the video was uploaded to YouTube) (α=.05).

RESULTS

The mean number of views for the 89 selected videos was 193 321 with a mean daily upload of 1241. The mean ±standard deviation usefulness score was 1.55 ±1.35, with 78.7% of the videos rated poor, 20.2% moderate, and 1.1% excellent. The majority of videos included procedures involved (44.9%) and advantages (41.9%), and the least discussed topics were contraindications (7.9%) and prognosis and survival (6.7%). The GQS scoring had a mean score of 1.98 ±0.78 out of a total score of 5. While statistically significant differences were not found among the video source, total views or upload days, and usefulness score (P>.05), significant differences were found between the type of videos and usefulness score (P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The majority of videos on complete arch fixed implant-supported rehabilitation were rated as poor in usefulness for patient education. Quality videos on implant-supported fixed rehabilitation were lacking on YouTube (GQS score <1.50), with most videos consisting of marketing or promotional content rather than unbiased educational information.

Assessment of usefulness and reliability of YouTube™ videos on denture care

INTRODUCTION

The world's population is in a demographic transition with a rising ageing population. Tooth loss is frequent among older people resulting in the replacement of natural teeth using complete or partial dentures. YouTube™ is the second most popular website in the world and is being increasingly used to access health care information. The aim of this study is to evaluate the usefulness and reliability of the information in YouTube™ videos regarding denture care.

METHODS

The YouTube™ website was used to systematically search for videos using the keyword 'denture care'. Videos meeting the eligibility criteria were assessed separately by two independent researchers. The usefulness of the videos was assessed using the Global Quality Assessment Scale and a customized usefulness scoring scheme. Based on these scores, the usefulness of the videos was categorized as low, medium and high. A modified DISCERN tool (mDISCERN) was used for assessing reliability with scores ranging from 0 to 5. Other video characteristics like source/ownership of the videos, duration, views, likes, dislikes, number of days posted, like ratio, view ratio, interaction index and Video Power Index were also obtained. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 120 videos were included. Based on the usefulness score, the usefulness of 65.8% of videos were classified as low, 32.5% were medium and 1.6% had high usefulness. The mDISCERN score for 74.2% of videos was 2 or below 2 indicating that the majority of videos had low reliability. Video characteristics did not differ significantly according to the usefulness of videos. Videos uploaded by dentists or dental hygienists had significantly higher usefulness scores (p < 0.001) in comparison to videos uploaded by other sources. However, reliability scores did not differ based on the sources of the videos. Video reliability was found to have a significant (B = 2.08, p < 0.001) positive association with video usefulness.

CONCLUSION

YouTube™ cannot be recommended as the only source of information for denture care as most videos received low usefulness and reliability ratings in our study. Dentists and dental health professionals could take an active part in enhancing denture care-related content on YouTube™ and enable patients to have adequate and reliable knowledge of denture hygiene practices.

Public sense of dental implants on social media: A cross-sectional study based on text analysis of comments

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the most discussed topics and possible new interests in dental implants among the public, as well as the public sentiments toward dental implants through topic and sentiment analysis of online comments.

METHODS

Comments of the top 100 most viewed dental implant-related YouTube videos were studied. The comments were analyzed by topic analysis (LDA topic model, Word co-occurrence analysis) and sentiment analysis. The basic information of videos was collected and classified. Video quality was evaluated by GQS criteria and 9-point usefulness scoring system. Statistical analyses were performed using Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U-tests, and Spearman correlation analysis.

RESULTS

74 videos with 61,618 comments were considered eligible in this study. Most videos targeted the public with high viewing and comments, but the theme was single and the quality was low. From topic analysis, the most discussed topics in the comments were procedure, cost, feelings associated with prognosis, and expectations. Multidisciplinary approaches in implant dentistry were frequently discussed. From sentiment analysis, the public mainly expressed positive sentiment through comments. In detail, the public had positive feelings about aesthetics and health, negative feelings about pain, and neutral feelings about cost.

CONCLUSION

The hot topics of public concern were procedure, cost, feelings associated with prognosis, and expectations. Intriguingly, multidisciplinary approaches in implant dentistry have emerged as a new hot subtopic within the topic "procedure". Based on the sentiment analysis of the comments, the general sentiment expressed by the public toward dental implants was predominantly positive.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Text mining can extract data from social media to explore public interest in dentistry. Clinicians should convey reasonable expectations and understanding about dental implants, especially addressing the most public-concerned topics (procedure, cost, feelings, and expectations), and provide patients with well-grounded multidisciplinary treatment plans to meet the growing public demand.

Are Social Media Platforms Appropriate Sources of Information for Patients Regarding the Topic of Facial Trauma?

BACKGROUND

Internet technologies have made a wide variety of information available to the public. Social media platforms (SMPs) can also be used as a source of information for patients seeking health care information. However, the quality of health information on SMPs is not clear and standardized.

PURPOSE

To evaluate the content, reliability, and quality levels of videos reporting on facial trauma on a SMP (YouTube [Google LLC, San Bruno, California]) regarding patients' information.

STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE

This was a cross-sectional study, and the sample is composed of videos found on a SMP based on searching the keyword "facial trauma." English-language videos with acceptable audiovisual quality and content related to facial trauma were included in the study.

PREDICTOR VARIABLE

The descriptive features such as number of views, number of likes, number of comments, video duration, date of uploading, and the demographic features such as source and uploader were recorded.

MAIN OUTCOME VARIABLES

The primary outcome variable was content level. Secondary outcome variables were reliability and quality levels measured by DISCERN and Global Quality Scale.

COVARIATES

The name and uniform resource locator of the videos were recorded as additional data.

ANALYSES

The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare low-content and high-content videos with a significance level of P < .05. The Kappa test was used to assess the inter-rater reliability.

RESULTS

The sample was composed of 50 videos that met study's inclusion. The mean total content score for the videos was 2.87 (range: 0 to 7), with 64% of all videos (n = 32) classified as low-content. The reliability and quality levels of videos classified as high-content were significantly superior (P < .001). In addition, the video duration was significantly higher in the high-content videos (P = .045). High-content videos were uploaded by health care professionals with a ratio of 39%, and the sources of these videos were predominantly oral and maxillofacial surgeons; however, low-content videos were mostly uploaded by clinics (75%), with the sources of these videos predominantly laypersons.

CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE

Given the generally low content, reliability, and quality of online videos regarding facial trauma, clinicians should be cautious in recommending or referring patients to SMPs.

Evaluation of the Quality of Peri-implantitis Videos on YouTube

Although many studies have evaluated the quality of YouTube videos related to dentistry, just one study has evaluated the quality of YouTube videos related to peri-implantitis. The aim of the cross-sectional study was to evaluate the quality of peri-implantitis-related YouTube videos. Two periodontists evaluated 47 videos that met the inclusion criteria, such as the country of upload, source of videos, number of views, likes and dislikes, viewing rate, interaction index, number of days since upload, duration of the video, usefulness score, global quality scale score, and comments. Peri-implantitis was evaluated using a 7-question system of the videos, 44.7% and 55.3% were uploaded by commercial companies and health care professionals, respectively. Although the usefulness score of the videos uploaded by health care professionals was statistically significantly higher ( P =0.022), the number of views, numbers of likes and dislikes were similar between the groups ( P >0.050). Although the usefulness score and global quality scale score of the perfect videos were statistically different between the groups ( P <0.001; P <0.001, respectively), the number of views, numbers of likes, and dislikes were similar. A strong positive correlation was found between the number of views and the number of likes ( P ˂0.001). A strong negative correlation was found between the interaction index and the number of days since upload ( P ˂0.001). As a result, YouTube videos on peri-implantitis were limited in number and had poor quality. Thus, videos of perfect quality should be uploaded.

Comparison of Turkish and English YouTube videos on phlebotomy in terms of content, reliability and quality

AIM

This study was conducted to evaluate the content, reliability and quality of YouTube videos about phlebotomy.

METHOD

A retrospective, register-based study was conducted exclusively with videos publicly available on YouTube in June 2022. Ninety videos have been evaluated in terms of content, reliability and quality. This evaluation was performed by two independent researchers. The skill checklist created with reference to the WHO blood collection guide was used for the content evaluation of the videos. The short form of the DISCERN questionnaire was used to evaluate the reliability of the video. The quality of the videos was evaluated with a 5-point Global Quality Scale.

RESULTS

The mean validity score of the English videos was 2.58 ± 0.88, the quality score was 2.98 ± 1.02 and the content score was 8.78 ± 1.47. In the Turkish videos, the mean validity score was 1.90 ± 1.27, the quality score was 2.35 ± 0.97 and the content score was 8.02 ± 1.07. The content, validity and quality scores of the English videos were found to be significantly higher than the Turkish videos.

CONCLUSION

Some videos do not include evidence-based practice and some videos contain technical differences as in the literature. In addition, in some videos, non-recommended techniques such as touching the cleaning area, opening and closing the fist were used. For these reasons, the results show that YouTube videos on phlebotomy are a limited resource for students.

Orthodontic treatment with miniscrew anchorage: Analysis of quality of information on YouTube

INTRODUCTION

The evaluation of the quality of information (QOI) and clarity of information (COI) among oral health-related videos on the video-streaming Web site YouTube is scarce. This study evaluated QOI and COI regarding temporary anchorage devices contained within videos uploaded by dental professionals (DPs) on YouTube.

METHODS

YouTube videos were systematically acquired with 4 search terms. The top 50 videos per search term by the number of views were stored in a YouTube account. A set of inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, videos were assessed for viewing characteristics, a 4-point scoring system (0-3) was applied to evaluate QOI in 10 predetermined domains, and a 3-point scoring system (0-2) was applied to evaluate COI. Descriptive statistical analyses and intrarater and interrater reliability tests were performed.

RESULTS

Strong intrarater and interrater reliability scores were observed. Sixty-three videos from the top 58 most-viewed DPs were viewed 1,395,471 times (range, 414-124,939). Most DPs originated from the United States (20%), and orthodontists (62%) uploaded most of the videos. The mean number of reported domains was 2.03 ± 2.40 (out of 10). The mean overall QOI score per domain was 0.36 ± 0.79 (out of 3). The "Placement of miniscrews" domain scored highest (1.23 ± 0.75). The "Cost of miniscrews placement" domain scored the lowest (0.03 ± 0.25). The mean overall QOI score per DP was 3.59 ± 5.64 (out of 30). The COI in 32 videos was immeasurable, and only 2 avoided using technical words.

CONCLUSIONS

The QOI related to temporary anchorage devices contained within videos provided by DPs through the YouTube Web site is deficient, particularly in the cost of placement. Orthodontists should be aware of the importance of YouTube as an information resource and ensure that videos related to temporary anchorage devices contain comprehensive and evidence-based information.

Assessment of the content and quality of YouTube videos related zygomatic implants: A content-quality analysis

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to evaluate the content and quality of YouTube videos of zygomatic implants.

METHODS

According to Google Trends (2021), "zygomatic implant" was the most preferred keyword related to the topic. Therefore, in this study "zygomatic implant" was used as a keyword for the video search. Demographic characteristics such as the number of views, likes/dislikes, comments, video duration, number of days after upload, uploaders, and target audiences of the videos were evaluated. To evaluate the accuracy and content quality of videos (available from YouTube), the video information and quality index (VIQI) and global quality scale (GQS) were used. Statistical analyses were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, Fisher's exact chi-square test, Yates continuity correction, and Spearman correlation analysis (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

A total of 151 videos were searched; 90 met all inclusion criteria. According to the video content score, 78.9% of the videos were identified as low content, 20% as moderate, and 1.1% as high content. There was no statistical difference between the groups in video demographic characteristics (p > 0.001). Conversely, information flow, accuracy of information, video quality and precision, and total VIQI scores were statistically different between the groups. The moderate-content group had a higher GQS score than the low-content group (p < 0.001). The videos were mainly uploaded (40%) from hospitals and universities. Most videos were targeted toward professionals (46.75%). Low-content videos had higher ratings than the moderate- and high-content videos.

CONCLUSIONS

Most YouTube videos on zygomatic implants showed low-content quality. This implies that YouTube is not a reliable source of information on zygomatic implants. Dentists, prosthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons should be aware of the content of video-sharing platforms and take responsibility for enriching video content.

What do TikTok videos offer us about dental implants treatment?

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the quality, source, popularity, visibility and reliability of Tiktok videos on dental implants.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A Tiktok search for dental implants was performed English language setting. Search hashtags were determined as "#dentalimplants," "#dentalimplantsurgery," "#dentalimplantstreatment," and "#implantdentistry." 148 of the 300 videos watched were included the study. Two periodontologists scored the videos for quality, reliability, utility, visibility and popularity. Videos' quality was evaluated using the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and the DISCERN tools, by categorizing them through quality of communication, duration, likes and dislikes, views, source and video type of each video were recorded.

RESULTS

There was significant positive correlation between "GQS" and "Total DISCERN" (Rho: 0.636) and "Duration in seconds" (Rho: 0.343) (p<0.05). For Total DISCERN, averages of the 31-45 seconds (p=0.010) and 46 seconds and above (p=.018) groups were higher than the averages of the 0-15 seconds group and average of the Educational group was higher than the average of the Testimonial, Product Advertisement and Entertainment groups (p=0.001, p=0.033 and p=0.041). Healthcare professionals mostly upload GQS 2 score videos and Hospital/Universities mostly upload GQS 2 and 3 score videos (p<0.05). Testimonial videos mostly receive GQS2 score videos and the 'Videos rich in supplementary visuals' quality also receives the most GQS4 score videos (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study demonstrate that TikTok videos provide low to moderate quality information about dental implants and that TikTok may not provide reliable information about dental implants.

Temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis videos on YouTube: Are they a good source of information?

BACKGROUND

YouTube has been increasingly used as a source of information by patients in the field of health, but many studies revealed poor information quality. This study evaluated the content and quality of YouTube videos on Temporomandibular Joint Arthrocentesis (TMJA) as an information resource for patients.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

YouTube search with the two keywords "temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis" and "temporomandibular joint lavage" was performed. The first 160 videos were listed for each term according to relevancy. Results were assessed for inclusion and categorized for source, purpose, target, arthrocentesis method described, and the narrator of the videos. An evaluation was performed independently by two oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The quality of videos was analyzed for the content and defined as poor, moderate, and excellent. DISCERN was also performed by scoring between 0 and 5.

RESULTS

A total of 43 videos were evaluated. The most upload source was individual users (46.5%) and the most video upload purpose was information for professionals (37.2%). The method with the most information about was the two-needle technic, which had a rate of 44.2 percent. The average usefulness score of the videos was 3.00 and 57.1% of the videos resulted in poor quality. A statistically significant positive high correlation was found between DISCERN and usefulness scoring (r = 0.793; p &lt; 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The majority of YouTube videos are of poor quality and this situation affects the patients' decisions about treatment. Health professionals should be aware of the content on YouTube and produce high-quality, accurate, and up-to-date information for patient education.

Assessment of Indonesian-Language Orthodontics-Related YouTube Video as a Source of Information

OBJECTIVES

 Health-seeking behavior through social media including orthodontics treatment has become popular among community in Indonesia. However, the characteristics of uploaded video in term of quality, reliability, and usefulness are unknown. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of Indonesian-language orthodontic-related YouTube videos uploaded.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 This study adopted cross-sectional design and analyzed 300 videos as the sample. A final 100 related videos were included for analysis of the quality, usefulness, and reliability of the video uploaded as well as viewers' interaction in term of popularity and visibility. Mann-Whitney's test was used for the statistical analysis.

RESULTS

 The majority of the videos were uploaded by individual users (60%) with moderate quality, usefulness, and reliability. Statistical analysis showed that orthodontics-related YouTube videos uploaded by individuals have lower popularity and reliability compared with health professional (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

 Most of the Indonesian-language orthodontic-related YouTube videos have moderate quality, usefulness, and reliability. There is a need from health professional to contribute more related video as main source of health information for the general to make healthy health-seeking behavior.

Osteotomy training for dental students using three-dimensional simulation software and maxillofacial three-dimensional-printed models

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES

Simulated educational models of teeth, bones, and gums have been used for a long time in procedural skills training in dentistry.  The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies and additive manufacturing has facilitated the production of more advanced 3D printed models that can be utilized for surgical and dental training together with other technologies (e.g., 3D scanners and image analysis software).

METHODS

We conducted training on osteotomy in the maxilla and mandible using maxillofacial simulation software (MSS) and a 3D-printed model for 5th-year undergraduate dental students (13 students in 2017 and 11 students in 2018 with more than half of their results). We compared the group (13 students) who performed osteotomy after participating in the simulation lecture with those (11 students) who performed osteotomy after performing self-simulation (they were instructed to bring their personal computers and install the MSS) using tests and questionnaires (pre- and post-curriculum).

RESULTS

The average test score was significantly higher in the group who performed osteotomy using the 3D-printed model after performing self-simulation; participants in this group had acquired a better understanding of the surgical procedure. Comparison using questionnaires showed a significant difference in the students' understanding of instruments and surgical techniques between both groups.

CONCLUSION

The MSS and 3D printed models are widely used clinically. Incorporating these in the curriculum will help accelerate student development. In addition, prompt education on the purpose and usefulness of these tools will not only facilitate simulation software and 3D-printed model-based treatment plan in the clinic but also promote further research.

The effect of Instagram posts related to #Wisdomteeth on patients

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to assess the quality of the posts about wisdom teeth on Instagram in terms of patients benefit.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

The #Wisdomteeth hashtag was searched on Instagram. The first 200 posts were reviewed. 50 posts were included in this study. Upload sources were categorized as health care professionals, health companies and individuals users. Post types were categorized as patient's experience, educational and scientifically erroneous. The posts were evaluated under eight titles for evaluating the usefulness score. The usefulness scores of the posts were classified as poor, moderate and excellent. Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi² test was used for data. Significance level was accepted as P < 0.05 RESULTS: The usefulness score was between 0 and 2, with a mean of 0.16. There were no statistically significant differences between upload sources and usefulness score (p = 0.328). There were no statistically significant differences between the usefulness score and the number of comments (p = 0.126).

CONCLUSION

The results of the study showed that Instagram posts do not contain reliable information for patients.
