An Iron-Porphyrin Grafted Metal–Organic Framework as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Photochemical Reduction of CO2

Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Directing the Selectivity of Oxygen Reduction to Water by Confining a Cu Catalyst in a Metal Organic Framework

Electrocatalysis is to play a key role in the transition towards a sustainable chemical and energy industry and active, stable and selective redox catalysts are much needed. Porous structures such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are interesting materials as these may influence selectivity of chemical reactions through confinement effects. In this work, the oxygen reduction catalyst Cu-tmpa was incorporated into the NU1000 MOF. Confinement of the catalyst within NU1000 steers the selectivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) towards water rather than peroxide. This is attributed to retention of the obligatory H2 O2 intermediate in close proximity to the catalytic center. Moreover, the resulting NU1000|Cu-tmpa MOF shows an excellent activity and stability in prolonged electrochemical studies, illustrating the potential of this approach.

Cooperative and Orthogonal Switching in the Solid State Enabled by Metal-Organic Framework Confinement Leading to a Thermo-Photochromic Platform

Cooperative behavior and orthogonal responses of two classes of coordinatively integrated photochromic molecules towards distinct external stimuli were demonstrated on the first example of a photo-thermo-responsive hierarchical platform. Synergetic and orthogonal responses to temperature and excitation wavelength are achieved by confining the stimuli-responsive moieties within a metal-organic framework (MOF), leading to the preparation of a novel photo-thermo-responsive spiropyran-diarylethene based material. Synergistic behavior of two photoswitches enables the study of stimuli-responsive resonance energy transfer as well as control of the photoinduced charge transfer processes, milestones required to advance optoelectronics development. Spectroscopic studies in combination with theoretical modeling revealed a nonlinear effect on the material electronic structure arising from the coordinative integration of photoresponsive molecules with distinct photoisomerization mechanisms. Thus, the reported work covers multivariable facets of not only fundamental aspects of photoswitch cooperativity, but also provides a pathway to modulate photophysics and electronics of multidimensional functional materials exhibiting thermo-photochromism.

Heterogenous CO2 Reduction Photocatalysis of Transparent Coordination Polymer Glass Membranes Containing Metalloporphyrins

Transparent and grain boundary-free substrates are essential to immobilize molecular photocatalysts for efficient photoirradiation reactions without unexpected light scattering and absorption by the substrates. Herein, membranes of coordination polymer glass immobilizing metalloporphyrins were examined as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for carbon dioxide (CO₂) reduction under visible-light irradiation. [Zn(HPO₄)(H₂PO₄)₂](ImH₂)₂ (Im = imidazolate) liquid containing iron(III) 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine chloride (Fe(TPP)Cl, 0.1-0.5 w/w%) was cast on a borosilicate glass substrate, followed by cooling to room temperature, resulting in transparent and grain boundary-free membranes with the thicknesses of 3, 5, and 9 μm. The photocatalytic activity of the membranes was in proportion to the membrane thickness, indicating that Fe(TPP)Cl in the subsurface of membranes effectively absorbed light and contributed to the reactions. The membrane photocatalysts were intact during the photocatalytic reaction and showed no recrystallization or leaching of Fe(TPP)Cl.

Solution-processable polymers of intrinsic microporosity for gas-phase carbon dioxide photoreduction

Four solution-processable, linear conjugated polymers of intrinsic porosity are synthesised and tested for gas phase carbon dioxide photoreduction. The polymers' photoreduction efficiency is investigated as a function of their porosity, optical properties, energy levels and photoluminescence. All polymers successfully form carbon monoxide as the main product, without the addition of metal co-catalysts. The best performing single component polymer yields a rate of 66 μmol h^-1 m^-2, which we attribute to the polymer exhibiting macroporosity and the longest exciton lifetimes. The addition of copper iodide, as a source of a copper co-catalyst in the polymers shows an increase in rate, with the best performing polymer achieving a rate of 175 μmol h^-1 m^-2. The polymers are active for over 100 h under operating conditions. This work shows the potential of processable polymers of intrinsic porosity for use in the gas phase photoreduction of carbon dioxide towards solar fuels.

Synthetic Access to a Framework-Stabilized and Fully Sulfided Analogue of an Anderson Polyoxometalate that is Catalytically Competent for Reduction Reactions

Polyoxometalates (POMs) featuring 7, 12, 18, or more redox-accessible transition metal ions are ubiquitous as selective catalysts, especially for oxidation reactions. The corresponding synthetic and catalytic chemistry of stable, discrete, capping-ligand-free polythiometalates (PTMs), which could be especially attractive for reduction reactions, is much less well developed. Among the challenges are the propensity of PTMs to agglomerate and the tendency for agglomeration to block reactant access of catalyst active sites. Nevertheless, the pervasive presence of transition metal sulfur clusters metalloenzymes or cofactors that catalyze reduction reactions and the justifiable proliferation of studies of two-dimensional (2D) metal-chalcogenides as reduction catalysts point to the promise of well-defined and controllable PTMs as reduction catalysts. Here, we report the fabrication of agglomeration-immune, reactant-accessible, capping-ligand-free Co^IIMo₆^IVS₂₄^n- clusters as periodic arrays in a water-stable, hierarchically porous Zr-metal-organic framework (MOF; NU1K) by first installing a disk-like Anderson polyoxometalate, Co^IIIMo₆^VIO₂₄^m-, in size-matched micropores where the siting is established via difference electron density (DED) X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. Flowing H₂S, while heating, reduces molybdenum(VI) ions to Mo(IV) and quantitatively replaces oxygen anions with sulfur anions (S^2-, HS^-, S₂^2-). DED maps show that MOF-templated POM-to-PTM conversion leaves clusters individually isolated in open-channel-connected micropores. The structure of the immobilized cluster as determined, in part, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis, and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of total X-ray scattering agrees well with the theoretically simulated structure. PTM@MOF displays both electrocatalytic and photocatalytic competency for hydrogen evolution. Nevertheless, the initially installed PTM appears to be a precatalyst, gaining competency only after the loss of ∼3 to 6 sulfurs and exposure to hydride-forming metal ions.

Metal-Photoswitch Friendship: From Photochromic Complexes to Functional Materials

Cooperative metal-photoswitch interfaces comprise an application-driven field which is based on strategic coupling of metal cations and organic photochromic molecules to advance the behavior of both components, resulting in dynamic molecular and material properties controlled through external stimuli. In this Perspective, we highlight the ways in which metal-photoswitch interplay can be utilized as a tool to modulate a system's physicochemical properties and performance in a variety of structural motifs, including discrete molecular complexes or cages, as well as periodic structures such as metal-organic frameworks. This Perspective starts with photochromic molecular complexes as the smallest subunit in which metal-photoswitch interactions can occur, and progresses toward functional materials. In particular, we explore the role of the metal-photoswitch relationship for gaining fundamental knowledge of switchable electronic and magnetic properties, as well as in the design of stimuli-responsive sensors, optically gated memory devices, catalysts, and photodynamic therapeutic agents. The abundance of stimuli-responsive systems in the natural world only foreshadows the creative directions that will uncover the full potential of metal-photoswitch interactions in the coming years.

Iron Porphyrin as a Cytochrome P450 Model for the Degradation of Dye

Organic dyes are widely used in the textile, biological, medical and other fields. However, a serious environmental problem has appeared because of the presence of organic dyes in industrial aqueous effluents. Thus, the efficient treatment of organic dyes in industrial wastewaters is currently in real demand. The current study investigated the oxidative degradation of the organic dye gentian violet by meso-tetra(carboxyphenyl) porphyriniron(III), [Fe^III(TCPP)] as a cytochrome P450 model and iodosylbenzene (PhIO) as an oxidant at room temperature. The degradation reaction was monitored by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy via the observation of UV-vis spectral changes of the gentian violet. The results showed that the efficiency of catalyzed degradation reached more than 90% in 1 h, indicating the remarkable oxidative degradation capacity of the [Fe^III(TCPP)]/PhIO system, which provided an efficient approach for the treatment of dyeing wastewater.

Development of heterogeneous photocatalysts via the covalent grafting of metal complexes on various solid supports

To date, remarkable progress has been achieved in the development of photocatalysts owing to their high activity, selectivity, and tunable light absorption in the visible light range. Recently, heterogeneous photocatalytic systems have emerged as potential candidates due to their beneficial attributes (e.g., high surface area, ease of functionalization and facile separation). Herein, we provide a concise overview of the rational design of heterogeneous photocatalysts by grafting photoactive complexes on heterogeneous support matrices via covalent grafting and their detailed characterization techniques, which have been followed by the landmark examples of their applications. Also, major challenges and opportunities in the forthcoming progress of these appealing areas are emphasised.

Metalloporphyrin Metal–Organic Frameworks: Eminent Synthetic Strategies and Recent Practical Exploitations

The emergence of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in recent years has stimulated the interest of scientists working in this area as one of the most applicable archetypes of three-dimensional structures that can be used as promising materials in several applications including but not limited to (photo-)catalysis, sensing, separation, adsorption, biological and electrochemical efficiencies and so on. Not only do MOFs have their own specific versatile structures, tunable cavities, and remarkably high surface areas, but they also present many alternative procedures to overcome emerging obstacles. Since the discovery of such highly effective materials, they have been employed for multiple uses; additionally, the efforts towards the synthesis of MOFs with specific properties based on planned (template) synthesis have led to the construction of several promising types of MOFs possessing large biological or bioinspired ligands. Specifically, metalloporphyrin-based MOFs have been created where the porphyrin moieties are either incorporated as struts within the framework to form porphyrinic MOFs or encapsulated inside the cavities to construct porphyrin@MOFs which can combine the peerless properties of porphyrins and porous MOFs simultaneously. In this context, the main aim of this review was to highlight their structure, characteristics, and some of their prominent present-day applications.
