Abstract
For a representative number of approved or investigational anticancer metallodrugs varying in lipophilicity, unspecific adsorption onto ultracentrifugal filter units was studied. It was found that for fairly hydrophilic compounds, such as cisplatin and oxaliplatin, the binding to filters does not substantially affect their amount measured (by ICP-MS) after ultrafiltration (>95%). In the case of metal complexes with moderate lipophilicity (log P > -0.1), adsorption effects turn out to be substantial. This might impede using ultrafiltration for studying the transformations of such drugs in human serum, unless they are rapidly converted into the protein adducts. The adsorption-suppressing effect of proteins was proved for indazolium trans-[tetrachloridobis(1H-indazole)ruthenate(III)] whose recovery from the filters was 61 and 14% in free and HSA-bound form, respectively.

Abstract
Accurate profiling of the lipophilicity of amphoteric compounds might be complex and laborious. In the present work the lipophilicity of 12 anthracycline antibiotics-four parent drugs: doxorubicin, daunorubicin, epidoxorubicin, and epidaunorubicin and eight novel formamidyne derivatives with attached morpholine, hexamethylenoimine or piperidine rings-was determined based on novel approach using MEEKC. In the second stage, lipophilicity was correlated with anthracycline toxicity towards two cell lines. In rat cardiomyoblast cell line (h9c2) a significant correlation between the logP and toxicity was found. The anthracycline lipophilicity was not correlated with toxicity towards the endothelial hybrid cell line (EAhy.926). In conclusion, the lipophilicity of anthracyclines seems to determine their toxicity towards cardiomyoblasts but not on endothelial cells, suggesting a different mechanism of anthracyclines intercellular transport or extrusion in cardiomyoblast and endothelial cells.

Abstract
Chalcones are naturally occurring compounds exhibiting biological activity through multiple mechanisms. Flavokawain B is one of chalcones found in kava plant. In our studies, we focused on the anticancer activity of flavokawain B in colorectal cancer cells LoVo and its resistant to doxorubicin subline-LoVo/Dx. Strong cytotoxic activity of flavokawain B and its ability to inhibit the proliferation in both cell lines was detected. These effects accompanied with induction cell cycle arrest in G2/M phase and the presence of SubG1 fraction. Flavokawain B at low concentration led to increase of caspase-3 activity. The chalcone-induced apoptosis was also confirmed by DNA fragmentation. In our work, the conversion of flavokawain B to corresponding flavanone-5,7-dimetoxyflavanone-was shown to be more extensive in cancer than in non-cancer cells. We found that the cyclization of the chalcone was related to the significant decrease in the cytotoxicity. Cell proliferation and cell cycle progression were not impaired significantly in the studied cancer cells incubated with 5,7-dimethoxyflavanone. We did not observe apoptosis in the cells incubated with flavanone. The results from biological studies agreed with the theoretical activity that emerges from structural parameters.

Abstract
Metal complexes have been the subject of numerous investigations in oncology but, despite the plethora of newly synthesized compounds, their precise mechanisms of action remain generally unknown or, for the best, incompletely determined. The continuous development of efficient and sensitive techniques in analytical chemistry and molecular biology gives scientists new tools to gather information on how metal complexes can be effective toward cancer. This review focuses on recent findings about the anticancer mechanism of action of metal complexes and how the ligands can be used to tune their pharmacological and physicochemical properties.

Abstract
Two new platinum(II)-based complexes bearing a bone-targeting group were synthesized and characterized. They both have excellent affinity for hydroxyapatite (HA), which is abundant in human bone tissues. Their antitumor activities against five human cancer cell lines (U2OS, A549, HCT116, MDA-MB-231 and HepG2) were evaluated and compared with cisplatin (CDDP). Though the antitumor efficacies of new complexes are lower than that of CDDP, they show higher selectivity against the HepG2 hepatoma cell line than the L02 normal liver cell line. Morphology studies exhibited typical characteristics of cell apoptosis and the cell cycle distribution analysis indicated that the complexes can inhibit cancer cells by inducing cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, a similar mechanism of action to CDDP.

Abstract
The lipophilicity of ten ruthenium(II)-arene complexes was assessed by reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP-TLC) on octadecyl silica stationary phase. The binary solvent systems composed of water and acetonitrile were used as mobile phase in order to determine chromatographic descriptors for lipophilicity estimation. Octanol-water partition coefficient, logKOW, of tested complexes was experimentally determined using twenty-eight standard solutes which were analyzed under the same chromatographic conditions as target substances. In addition, ab initio density functional theory (DFT) computational approach was employed to calculate logKOW values from the differences in Gibbs' free solvation energies of the solute transfer from n-octanol to water. A good overall agreement between DFT calculated and experimentally determined logKOW values was established (R2 = 0.8024–0.9658).

Abstract
Twelve copper(II) Schiff base complexes derived from lipophilic amines have been prepared using either salicylaldehyde or ortho-vanillin via a microwave-assisted reaction. All complexes have been obtained elementally pure and an X-ray diffraction of an isopentyl derivative has confirmed the structure of these compounds. All complexes showed a promising degree of anti-mycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, where activity seemed to increase with an increase in the length of the aliphatic chain.

Abstract
MEEKC is a mode of CE, which utilizes microemulsion (ME) as the BGE to achieve separation of a diverse range of analytes. MEs are composed of nanometer-sized oil droplets suspended in aqueous buffer which are stabilized by the presence of a surfactant and co-surfactant. These MEs are commonly referred to as oil-in-water MEs and their application in MEEKC has been extensively examined. This review details advances in the theory, methodology, and application of MEEKC during the period 2010-2012. Areas covered include online sample concentration, advances in chiral separations, use of coated capillaries, chemometric approaches, and the use of novel additives to the ME system. This review also provides the reader with an introduction to MEEKC and a presentation of recent applications.
