Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm birth (PTB) is one of the main causes of neonatal deaths globally, with approximately 15 million infants are born preterm. Women from the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) populations maybe at higher risk of PTB, therefore, the mental health impact on mothers experiencing a PTB is particularly important, within the BAME populations.
AIM To determine the prevalence of mental health conditions among BAME women with PTB as well as the methods of mental health assessments used to characterise the mental health outcomes.
METHODS A systematic methodology was developed and published as a protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42020210863). Multiple databases were used to extract relevant data. I2 and Egger’s tests were used to detect the heterogeneity and publication bias. A trim and fill method was used to demonstrate the influence of publication bias and the credibility of conclusions.
RESULTS Thirty-nine studies met the eligibility criteria from a possible 3526. The prevalence rates of depression among PTB-BAME mothers were significantly higher than full-term mothers with a standardized mean difference of 1.5 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) 29%-74%. The subgroup analysis indicated depressive symptoms to be time sensitive. Women within the very PTB category demonstrated a significantly higher prevalence of depression than those categorised as non-very PTB. The prevalence rates of anxiety and stress among PTB-BAME mothers were significantly higher than in full-term mothers (odds ratio of 88% and 60% with a CI of 42%-149% and 24%-106%, respectively).
CONCLUSION BAME women with PTB suffer with mental health conditions. Many studies did not report on specific mental health outcomes for BAME populations. Therefore, the impact of PTB is not accurately represented in this population, and thus could negatively influence the quality of maternity services they receive.

Abstract
Selective mutism (SM) is a childhood disorder characterized by persistent failure to speak in situations where speech is expected. There is evidence that behavioral interventions are effective for increasing speech in children with SM but studies have been limited by small, relatively homogeneous samples. Although twins appear to be disproportionately represented among children with SM, little is known about their specific treatment needs and barriers to effective treatment implementation in this population. This case study presents family-based behavioral therapy delivered to a set of 8-year-old, identical twins with SM. At posttreatment, both children displayed marked improvements in speaking and social engagement. Clinical considerations for working with twins with SM are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the extent to which social and family factors explain variability in cognitive, language, and motor development among very preterm (<30 weeks of gestation) children from 2 to 5 years of age. STUDY DESIGN As part of a longitudinal study, very preterm children recruited as neonates were assessed at 2 (n = 87) and 5 (n = 83) years of age using standardized tests of cognitive, language, and motor ability alongside demographically matched full term (FT) children (n = 63). For very preterm children, developmental change scores were calculated for each domain to assess within-individual variability to 5 years of age. Multivariate regression and mixed-effect models examined social risk index, parenting stress, family functioning, and maternal intellectual ability as predictors of developmental variation among very preterm children. RESULTS Very preterm children demonstrated poorer cognitive, language, and motor abilities than FT children at 2 (P ≤ .001) and 5 (P < .002) years of age. Social adversity was associated with cognitive (P < .001) and language (P < .001) outcomes at both ages, with parenting stress also related to cognitive outcomes (P = .03). Infant medical risk was associated with motor outcome at 5 years (P=.01). Very preterm children showed considerable within-individual variation between assessments. Among very preterm children, neonatal white matter abnormalities predicted worsening cognitive (P=.04) and motor development (P = .01). Social risk index predicted worsening language development (P = .04), but this association was subsequently explained by dysfunctional maternal affective involvement (P = .01) and lower maternal intellectual ability (P = .05). CONCLUSIONS Both clinical and socioenvironmental factors are associated with cognitive, language, and motor developmental variation among very preterm children from infancy to early school age.
