Selaginella convolute extract mediated synthesis of ZnO NPs for pain management in emerging nursing care

A systematic review on antimicrobial activities of green synthesised Selaginella silver nanoparticles

BACKGROUND

Metallic nanoparticles from different natural sources exhibit superior therapeutic options as compared to the conventional methods. Selaginella species have attracted special attention of researchers worldwide due to the presence of bioactive molecules such as flavonoids, biflavonoids, triterpenes, steroids, saponins, tannins and other secondary metabolites that exhibit antimicrobial, antiplasmodial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Environment friendly green synthesised silver nanoparticles from Selaginella species provide viable, safe and efficient treatment against different fungal pathogens.

OBJECTIVE

This systematic review aims to summarise the literature pertaining to superior antifungal ability of green synthesised silver nanoparticles using plant extracts of Selaginella spp. in comparison to both aqueous and ethanolic raw plant extracts by electronically collecting articles from databases.

METHODS

The recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis were taken into consideration while preparing this review. The titles and abstracts of the collected data were stored in Endnote20 based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The search strategy included literature from established sources like PubMed, Google Scholar and Retrieval System Online using subject descriptors.

RESULTS

The search yielded 60 articles with unique hits. After removal of duplications, 46 articles were identified, 40 were assessed and only seven articles were chosen and included in this review based on our eligibility criteria.

CONCLUSION

The physicochemical and preliminary phytochemical investigations of Selaginella suggest higher drug potency of nanoparticles synthesised from plant extract against different diseases as compared to aqueous and ethanolic plant extracts. The study holds great promise as the synthesis of nanoparticles involves low energy consumption, minimal technology and least toxic effects.

Targeted therapy for cisplatin-resistant lung cancer via aptamer-guided nano-zinc carriers containing USP14 siRNA

Cisplatin (DDP) is a common therapeutic option for non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). However, some patients fail to respond to the DDP chemotherapy. Therefore, identifying novel biomarkers to improve the diagnosis and treatment of NSCLC is important. Ubiquitin-specific protease (USP14) is involved in various pathological conditions including cancer; however, the role of USP14 in NSCLC remains elusive. The SELEX technology was used to identify aptamers that specifically recognize DDP-resistant lung cancer cells and couple them with nano-zinc (zinc hydroxide, Zn(OH)2) carriers. USP14 levels were higher in DDP-resistant lung cancer compared to DDP-sensitive lung cancer. The survival rate of lung cancer patients with increased USP14 expression was significantly lower than the survival rate of patients with low USP14 expression. Silencing USP14 increased the tumor antagonistic action of DDP in A549 cisplatin-resistant (A549/DDP) cells, while USP14 overexpression decreased the antagonist effects. Aptamer-targeted nano-zinc carriers were loaded with USP14 siRNA to target DDP-resistant lung cancer cells. Aptamer-targeted nano-zinc carriers containing USP14 siRNA increased the antitumor effects of DDP in A549/DDP cells and mice bearing A549/DDP cells. These results indicate that aptamer-guided nano-zinc carriers may be a potent carrier for the precise treatment of drug-resistant tumors.

Insights into the mapping of green synthesis conditions for ZnO nanoparticles and their toxicokinetics

Research on ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) has broad medical applications. However, the green synthesis of ZnO NPs involves a wide range of properties requiring optimization. ZnO NPs show toxicity at lower doses. This toxicity is a function of NP properties and pharmacokinetics. Moreover, NP toxicity and pharmacokinetics are affected by the species type and age of the animals tested. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling offers a mechanistic platform to scrutinize the colligative effect of the interplay between these factors, which reduces the need for in vivo studies. This review provides a guide to choosing green synthesis conditions that result in minimal toxicity using a mechanistic tool, namely PBPK modeling.

Recent progress of phytogenic synthesis of ZnO, SnO2, and CeO2 nanomaterials

A critical investigation on the fabrication of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) such as ZnO, SnO₂, and CeO₂ NPs synthesized from green and phytogenic method using plants and various plant parts have been compiled. In this review, different plant extraction methods, synthesis methods, characterization techniques, effects of plant extract on the physical, chemical, and optical properties of green synthesized ZnO, SnO₂, and CeO₂ NPs also have been compiled and discussed. Effect of several parameters on the size, morphology, and optical band gap energy of metal oxide have been explored. Moreover, the role of solvents has been found important and discussed. Extract composition i.e. phytochemicals also found to affect the morphology and size of the synthesized ZnO, SnO₂, and CeO₂ NPs. It was found that, there is no universal extraction method that is ideal and extraction techniques is unique to the plant type, plant parts, and solvent used.

Zinc oxide and zinc oxide-based nanostructures: biogenic and phytogenic synthesis, properties and applications

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are considered as very significant and essential material due to its multifunctional properties, stability, low cost and wide usage. Many green and biogenic approaches for ZnO NPs synthesis have been reported using various sources such as plants and microorganisms. Plants contain biomolecules that can act as capping, oxidizing and reducing agents that increase the rate of reaction and stabilizes the NPs. This review emphasizes and compiles different types of plants and parts of plant used for the synthesis of ZnO and its potential applications at one place. The influence of biogenic and phytogenic synthesized ZnO on its properties and possible mechanisms for its fabrication has been discussed. This review also highlights the potential applications and future prospects of phytogenic synthesized ZnO in the field of energy production and storage, sun light harvesting, environmental remediation, and biological applications.

Green synthesis of Zingiberis rhizoma-based carbon dots attenuates chemical and thermal stimulus pain in mice

Aim: To evaluate the analgesic activity of Zingiberis rhizoma-based carbon dots (ZR-CDs). Materials & methods: Novel ZR-CDs were prepared via a facile, green pyrolysis method. Microstructure, optical and functional group properties were characterized. Acetic acid writhing, hot-plate and tail-immersion tests were performed using mice to evaluate the analgesic activity of ZR-CDs, followed by a preliminary study on the analgesic mechanism. Results: ZR-CDs with a quantum yield of 5.2% had a diameter ranging from 2.23 to 3.77 nm. Remarkable analgesic effect of ZR-CDs was observed against both thermal and chemical stimulus tests, possibly mediated by an opioid-like mechanism and the regulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine levels. Conclusion: ZR-CDs have a promising potential for biomedical application in relieving pain-related diseases.
