Abstract
Mercury is known as a highly toxic metal that is poisonous even if present in a trace amount. Generally, it enters in the food chain (especially fish) and water resources via different pathways and leads to harmful effects. Owing to the detrimental nature of the metal, traditionally several methods were employed by researchers for regular monitoring of the mercury metal ions. However, these methods are associated with many limitations like high cost of technical expertise, and intricacy of the detection procedure. So, using these methods to detect mercury ions in real time is challenging. Therefore, in recent years fluorescent-based analytical tools emerged rapidly. Among the various fluorescent organic scaffolds, coumarin has been scorching, owing to quick response, light stability, high sensitivity, good selectivity, excellent fluorescence intensity, and fluorescence quantum yield. This review provides a deep dive into the coumarin-derived chemo-sensors development throughout 2015-2023. We anticipate that the review will assist to broad scientific community as a reference document to design more interesting sensors.

Abstract
In the present study, fluorogenic coumarin-based probes (1–3) through condensation of 4-hydroxy coumarin with malondialdehyde bis(diethyl acetal)/triethyl orthoformate were prepared. The absorption and fluorescence emission properties of 2b and 3 in different solvents were studied, and a considerable solvatochromic effect was observed. The sensitivity of chemosensors 2b and 3 toward various cations and anions was investigated. It was revealed that compound 3 had a distinct selectivity toward Sn2+, possibly via a chelation enhanced quenching mechanism. The fluorescence signal was quenched over the concentration range of 6.6–120 μM, with an LOD value of 3.89 μM. The cytotoxicity evaluation of 3 against breast cancer cell lines demonstrated that the chemosensor was nontoxic and could be used successfully in cellular imaging. The probe responded to tin ions not only via fluorescence quenching, but also through colorimetric signal change. The change in optical properties was observed in ambient conditions and inside living cells. A fluorogenic and colorimetric coumarin-based probe was synthesized and used for sensing Sn2+ inside and ouside of living cells.![]()

Abstract
The present study harnesses fluorescence quenching between a nonfluorescent aniline and fluorophore 2-acetyl-3H-benzo[f]chromen-3-one [2AHBC] in binary solvent mixtures of acetonitrile and 1,4-dioxane at room temperature and explores the fluorophore as an antimicrobial material. Our findings throw light on the key performance of organic molecules in the medicinal and pharmaceutical fields, which are considered as the most leading drives in therapeutic applications. In view of that, fluorescence quenching data have been interpreted by various quenching models. This demonstrates that the sphere of action holds very well in the present work and also confirms the presence of static quenching reactions. Additionally, the fluorophore was first investigated for druglike activity with the help of in silico tools, and then it was investigated for antimicrobial activity through bioinformatics tools, which has shown promising insights.

Abstract
The selective and efficient monitoring of mercury (Hg2+ ) contamination found in the environment and ecosystem has been carried out. Thus, a new 1,8-naphthalimide-based fluorescent probe NADP for the detection of Hg2+ based on a fluorescence enhancement strategy has been designed and synthesized. The NADP probe can detect Hg2+ with high selectivity and sensitivity and a low detection limit of 13 nm. The detection mechanism was based on a Hg2+ -triggered deprotection reaction, resulting in a dramatic change in fluorescence from colorless to green at physiological pH. Most importantly, biological investigation has shown that the NADP probe can be successfully applied to the monitoring of Hg2+ in living cells and zebrafish with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Mercury has complex biological toxicity and can cause a variety of physiological diseases and even death, so it is of great importance to develop novel strategies for detecting trace mercury in environmental and biological samples. In this work, we designed a new coumarin-based colorimetric and fluorescent probe CNS, which could be obtained from inexpensive starting materials with high overall yield in three steps. Probe CNS could selectively respond to Hg2+ with obvious color and fluorescence changes, and the presence of other metal ions had no effect on the fluorescence changes. Probe CNS also exhibited high sensitivity against Hg2+, with a detection limit as low as 2.78 × 10-8 M. More importantly, the behavioral tracks of zebrafish had no obvious changes upon treatment with 10 μM probe CNS, thus indicating its low toxicity. The probe showed potential application value and was successfully used for detecting Hg2+ in a test strip, HeLa cells and living zebrafish larvae.

Abstract
Mercury, as a highly toxic heavy metal, can cause very serious harm to human health and even death in severe cases. Therefore, we synthesized a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting mercury ions, with mercaptoethanol as the recognition receptor. Probe CMER could determine mercury ions in 0-1.6 μM and the detection limit is 7.6 nM. Moreover, CMER manifested a fast response for Hg2+ (within 5 s) and simultaneously observed that the color changed from light yellow to orange by naked eye. In addition to these preeminent spectral properties, the probe also had satisfactory bioimaging results in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
Azulene is a bicyclic aromatic chromophore that absorbs in the visible region. Its absorption maximum undergoes a hypsochromic shift if a conjugated electron-withdrawing group is introduced at the C1 position. This fact can be exploited in the design of a colorimetric chemodosimeter that functions by the transformation of a dithioacetal to the corresponding aldehyde upon exposure to Hg2+ ions. This chemodosimeter exhibits good chemoselectivity over other metal cations, and responds with an unambiguous colour change clearly visible to the naked eye. Its synthesis is concise and its ease of use makes it appropriate in resource-constrained environments, for example in determing mercury content of drinking water sources in the developing world.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric and fluorometric method based on coumarin as signalling unit was developed for Hg2+ recognition and quantification. Initially, the alkyne functionality was incorporated into a coumarin system and the resulting molecule showed higher specificity and sensitivity for Hg2+ over other cations in both absorption and emission sensing assays. The Hg2+ recognition was detected as visible colour change from colourless to yellow and as fluorescence quenching. The colour change was assigned to the increased intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the signalling unit upon Hg2+ binding whereas a decline in the fluorescence intensity was ascribed to the heavy atom effect from Hg2+. In order to generate a material with high sensing performance level, alkyne-functionalized molecule was hosted into a polymeric material. The resulting functionalized polymer showed higher sensitivity and selectivity for Hg2+ over its corresponding coumarin molecule. The investigation of the possible binding modes for Hg2+ suggested both alkyne and triazole functionalities as potential binding sites for Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the proposed method were evaluated and values less than a recommended maximum level of Hg2+contaminant in drinking water (2.00 μg/L) were obtained (LOD = 0.44 μg/L and LOQ = 1.33μg/L). The real-life application of the method was investigated using natural water samples containing Hg2+ levels equivalent to the maximum tolerable concentration of Hg2+ in drinking water. The outcomes suggested that the method could be used in the sensing and determination of Hg2+ level of contaminant in the environment.

Abstract
Given the important role of biothiols in various physiological processes, there is a need to develop novel fluorescent sensors for detecting them. Herein, a novel "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor (E)-N'-((7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)-6-((quinolin-8-yloxy)methyl)picolinohydrazide (PQC) was synthesized and its absorbance and fluorescence properties were characterized. The sensor PQC could form a stable complex and showed a significant fluorescence quenching response to Cu2+ with a quenching efficiency of approximately 100%, and the PQC-Cu2+ complex showed a fluorescence enhancement response to GSH with a higher recovery rate of above 80% in a CH3OH/HEPES (9:1 v/v, pH = 7.23) buffer system. Its detection limits were determined to be 0.17 μM for Cu2+ and 0.20 μM for GSH, and the binding stoichiometry of PQC-Cu2+ was determined to be 1: 1 by Job's plot method. Importantly, the sensor PQC can be used for filter paper strip tests and bioimaging in living cells.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal with high toxicity and easy migration; it can be enriched through the food chain, and cause serious threats to the natural environment and human health. So, the development of a method that can be used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+ ) in the environment, in cells, and in organisms is very important. Here, a new 7-hydroxycoumarin-derived carbonothioate-based probe (CC-Hg) was designed and synthesized for detection of Hg2+ . After addition of Hg2+ , a large fluorescence enhancement was observed due to the formation of 7-hydroxyl, which reinforced the intramolecular charge transfer process. The CC-Hg probe had good water solubility and selectivity. Moreover, the probe was able to detect Hg2+ quantitatively over the concentration range 0-2 μM and with a detection limit of 7.9 nM. Importantly, we successfully applied the probe to detect Hg2+ in water samples, in living cells, and in zebrafish. The experimental results demonstrated its potential value in practical applications.

Abstract
A novel coumarin-thiourea conjugate was synthesized facilely. It served as a fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for selective detection of Hg2+ ion over other common competitive metal ions including Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Sr2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions based on the Hg2+-promoted desulfurization and cyclization reactions. Addition of Hg2+ ion to the sensor solution in 2:8 EtOH/H2O induced a hypsochromic shift of the UV-Vis absorption band from 360 nm to 340 nm accompanying distinct enhancement in the absorption intensity while addition of other metal ions failed to bring about substantial change in the absorption spectra. Addition of Hg2+ to the sensor solution also caused marked increase in the fluorescence emission intensity and most common competitive metal ions did not interfere with the selective sensing of Hg2+ ion by the sensor. The detection limit of Hg2+ ion by the probe was calculated to be 1.46 × 10-7 M and the probe could be utilized for selective detection of Hg2+ ion by fluorescence turn-on mode over a broad pH range of 1-11.

Abstract
An effective dithiourea-appended 1,8-naphthalimide fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized. This probe could recognize Hg2+ and Ag+ sensitively and selectively in neutral and alkaline conditions. Moreover, the probe detected Hg2+ alone at pH between 2 and 6. The sensing ability of the probe was explored by UV-vis, fluorescence, FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The probe was quenched by Hg2+ and Ag+ with 1:1 binding ratios in MeCN/H2O (4/1, v/v) mixed solution with binding constants of 3.76 × 104 L mol-1 and 2.47 × 104 L mol-1, respectively. The linear concentration ranges for Hg2+ and Ag+ were 0-17 μmol L-1 and 0-24 μmol L-1 with detection limits of 0.83 μmol L-1 and 1.20 μmol L-1, respectively, which allowed for the quantitative determination of Hg2+ and Ag+. The new probe, 3a, was successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of Hg2+ and Ag+ in HepG2 cells, demonstrating its potential application in biological science. Moreover, 3a was used to measure Hg2+ and Ag+ in tap water, drinking water and ultrapure water samples. The recoveries of Hg2+ and Ag+ in water samples were 96-99% and 98-103%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method showed promising perspectives for its application, aimed at detecting Hg2+ and Ag+ in fluorescence imaging and real water samples.
