Mitochondria-targeted BODIPY dyes for small molecule recognition, bio-imaging and photodynamic therapy

Mitochondria are essential for a diverse array of biological functions. There is increasing research focus on developing efficient tools for mitochondria-targeted detection and treatment. BODIPY dyes, known for their structural versatility and excellent spectroscopic properties, are being actively explored in this context. Numerous studies have focused on developing innovative BODIPYs that utilize optical signals for imaging mitochondria. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the progress made in this field, aiming to investigate mitochondria-related biological events. It covers key factors such as design strategies, spectroscopic properties, and cytotoxicity, as well as mechanism to facilitate their future application in organelle imaging and targeted therapy. This work is anticipated to provide valuable insights for guiding future development and facilitating further investigation into mitochondria-related biological sensing and phototherapy.

Pyridine Scaffolds, Phenols and Derivatives of Azo Moiety: Current Therapeutic Perspectives

Synthetic heterocyclic compounds have incredible potential against different diseases; pyridines, phenolic compounds and the derivatives of azo moiety have shown excellent antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, anti-melanogenic, anti-ulcer, anticancer, anti-mycobacterial, anti-inflammatory, DNA binding and chemosensing activities. In the present review, the above-mentioned activities of the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds (pyridines), hydroxyl (phenols) and azo derivatives are discussed with reference to the minimum inhibitory concentration and structure–activity relationship, which clearly indicate that the presence of nitrogen in the phenyl ring; in addition, the hydroxyl substituent and the incorporation of a diazo group is crucial for the improved efficacies of the compounds in probing different diseases. The comparison was made with the reported drugs and new synthetic derivatives that showed recent therapeutic perspectives made in the last five years.

Development of a near infrared novel bioimaging agent via co-oligomerization of Congo red with aniline and o-phenylenediamine: experimental and theoretical studies

With a view to study the effect of insertion of a multifunctional dye moiety on the photo physical properties of conducting polymers, the present paper reports for the first time the homopolymerization and co-oligomerization of Congo red (CR) dye with aniline and o-phenylenediamine. The co-oligomerization was established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy while the morphology was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The theoretical as well as experimental data of 1H-NMR as well as IR studies confirmed the co-oligomer formation while ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy studies revealed a dynamic change in the optical properties upon variation of co-oligomer composition. X-ray diffraction studies established a crystalline morphology of oligomers. Live cell confocal imaging studies revealed that the co-oligomers could be effectively used in NIR imaging.
