Abstract
Coal fly ash (CFA) has been extensively researched as an adsorbent for heavy metals, but its application is limited by its low adsorption capacity. The modification of CFA with hyperbranched polymers results in improved adsorption capacities. Hyperbranched polyethylenimine (HPEI) is a hyperbranched polymer containing NH2 groups that can bind with heavy metal ions through complexation or electrostatic interactions. In this study, CFA-HPEI adsorbents with various HPEI loadings (1-5%) were prepared and evaluated for the removal of Cr(VI). The successful incorporation of HPEI onto CFA was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The 3% CFA-HPEI loaded adsorbent resulted in optimum results when the effect of pH and adsorbent dosage was studied. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model best described the adsorption kinetics at an initial concentration of 20 mg/L. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model best fitted the equilibrium adsorption data with a maximum adsorption capacity of 85.93 mg/g. The Cr-loaded adsorbent was reused as a photocatalyst to degrade methylene blue (MB) in the presence of visible light. The loaded adsorbent degraded 98.9% of MB (5 mg/L) within 180 min and was accompanied by compounds with m/z of 173 and 234, corresponding to the intermediate degradation of Azure A. The XPS analysis confirmed the coexistence of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) on the surface of the adsorbent. In addition, the loaded adsorbent exhibited good stability following MB degradation with no structural changes observed. Thus, CFA-HPEI adsorbents can be utilized as low-cost adsorbents for the remediation of toxic Cr(VI) from water and wastewater. The Cr-loaded CFA-HPEI adsorbent can be effectively reused as a photocatalyst, thus reducing environmental pollution.

Abstract
The improper disposal of toxic and carcinogenic organic substances resulting from the manufacture of dyes, drugs and pesticides can contaminate aquatic environments and potable water resources and cause serious damage to animal and human health and to the ecosystem. In this sense, heterogeneous photocatalysis stand out as one effective and cost-effective water depollution technique. The use of metal oxide nanocomposites (MON), from the mixture of two or more oxides or between these oxides and other functional semiconductor materials, have gained increasing attention from researchers and industrial developers as a potential alternative to produce efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for the remediation of water contamination by organic compounds. Thus, this work presents an updated review of the main advances in the use of metal oxide nanocomposites-based photocatalysts for decontamination of water polluted by these substances. A bibliometric analysis allowed to show the evolution of the importance of this research topic in the literature over the last decade. The results of the study also showed that hierarchical and heterogeneous nanostructures of metal oxides, as well as conducting polymers and carbon materials, currently stand out as the main materials for the synthesis of MON, with better photocatalysis performance in the degradation of dyes, pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Abstract
In recent decades, several nanocomposites developed by chemical synthetic routes, have been demonstrated as efficient photocatalysts for the photodegradation of hazardous organic dyes. The present investigation reports the sonochemical-assisted fabrication of silver-supported α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites (SA@Ag@IONCs) using the Saraca asoca leaf extract. The magnetic nanocomposites can be easily removed from the reaction mixture. The morphology of these materials was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), XPS, BET surface area analyzer, UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and VSM techniques. The XRD and electron microscopy analyses revealed the small size and well-crystalline SA@Ag@IONC particles with spherical and buckyball structures. The large surface area of SA@Ag@IONCs was confirmed by BET analysis. The absorption edge in UV-visible spectra appeared to migrate towards high wavelengths for the SA@Ag@IONC composite, causing a change in the bandgap energy. In the case of the sonication assisted composite, the bandgap energy was 2.1 eV, making it easier for the electron to transfer from the valence band to conduction band. The decoration of ultrasmall silver onto the surfaces of the α-Fe2O3 nanocomposite, which considerably increases the capacity to absorb sunlight, enhances the efficiency of charge carrier separation, and inhibits the electron-hole recombination rate as confirmed by the reduced PL intensity, is responsible for the excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. Outcomes shown SA@Ag@IONCs have a high photodegradation rate as well as high-rate constant value at an optimized condition that is at pH 9 and 0.5 g L-1 dose of nanocomposite, photodegradation rate of Azure B is ∼94%. Trap experiment results indicated that O2˙- and h+ are the active species responsible for the photodegradation of AzB.

Abstract
In this work, a ZnO hemisphere-like structure co-doped with Er and Cr was obtained by the co-precipitation method for photocatalytic applications. The dopant's effect on the ZnO lattice was investigated using X-ray diffraction, Raman, photoluminescence, UV-Vis and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques. The photocatalytic response of the material was analyzed using methylene blue (MB) as the model pollutant under UV irradiation. The wurtzite structure of the Zn0.94Er0.02Cr0.04O compound presented distortions in the lattice due to the difference between the ionic radii of the Cr3+, Er3+ and Zn2+ cations. Oxygen vacancy defects were predominant, and the energy competition of the dopants interfered in the band gap energy of the material. In the photocatalytic test, the MB degradation rate was 42.3%. However, using optimized H2O2 concentration, the dye removal capacity reached 90.1%. Inhibitor tests showed that •OH radicals were the main species involved in MB degradation that occurred without the formation of toxic intermediates, as demonstrated in the ecotoxicity assays in Artemia salina. In short, the co-doping with Er and Cr proved to be an efficient strategy to obtain new materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract
Gold–titanium oxide nanocomposites (Au–TiO2 NCPs) were fabricated through pulsed laser-induced photolysis (PIPS) and verified to be usable for the visible light catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). The PIPS method can produce a sufficient amount of NCPs quickly and has potential to be commercialized. In contrast to other studies, we clarified the optical spectrum of the light sources, including peak power, bandwidth, and total intensity used for photodegradation reactions and discovered that the photodegradation efficiency of the produced Au–TiO2 NCPs in the wavelength range of 405 nm could reach 37% in 30 min due to the charge transfer between Au and TiO2. The control experiment shows that the addition of individual Au and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) to an MB solution has no enhancement of degradation ability under visible light illumination. The photodegradation of Au–TiO2 NCPs can be further improved by increasing the concentrations of auric acid and TiO2 NPs in a precursor under PIPS fabrication.

Abstract
A boosted photocatalytic activity was observed for the CdS-AgBr nanocomposite in the degradation of methylene blue (MB). The experimental design method based on the response surface methodology (RSM) approach used to study the simultaneous interaction effects between the influencing variables. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the results confirmed a significant model for processing the data because an F value of 32.34 for the suggested model was higher than that of the critical value of F0.05, 14, 13 = 2.55 at 95% confidence interval. This analysis also showed a non-significant lack of fit (LOF) (as a measure of the randomness of the deviations around the obtained data) because the LOF F value of 8.27 was smaller than that of the critical value of F0.05, 10, 3 = 8.79. R2 values near to unity were achieved (the multiple correlation coefficients R2 (R2 = 0.9627), adjusted R2 (adj-R2 = 0.9226), and predicted R2 (pred-R2 = 0.7423)). Six center points suggested by the model included the following conditions: pH, 6.1; CMB, 3.5 mg/L; a dose of the catalyst, 0.68 g/L; and irradiation time, 40.5 min. During the center point runs, the degradation efficiencies were obtained in the range of 38 to 43%. The optimal run included pH, 9; catalyst dosage, 1 g/L; irradiation time, 60 min; and CMB, 2 mg/L, and the best removal efficiency of 98% was achieved during these conditions.

Abstract
Silver and gold nanoparticles were synthesized under environmentally-friendly reaction conditions by using a biodegradable copolymer and water as a solvent. The triblock copolymer Pluronic P103 was utilized as a stabilizing agent or soft template to produce Ag and Au nanoparticles (NPs) of different sizes. Moreover, in the synthesis of Au NPs, the polymer acted as a reducing agent, decreasing the number of reagents used and consequently the residues produced, hence, rendering the procedure less complicated. It was observed that as the concentration of the polymer increased, the size of the metallic NPs augmented as well. However, AgNPs and AuNPs prepared with 1 and 10 wt% Pluronic P103, respectively, showed a significant decrease in particle size due to the presence of polymeric soft templates. The hybrid materials (metal/polymer) were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS, and TEM. The pre-synthesized nanoparticles were employed to decorate anatase-TiO2, and the composites were characterized by DRS, XRD, BET surface area measurements, the TEM technique with the EDS spectrum, and XPS spectroscopy to demonstrate NPs superficial incorporation. Finally, methylene blue was used as a probe molecule to evidence the effect of NPs decoration in its photocatalytic degradation. The results showed that the presence of the NPs positively affected methylene blue degradation, achieving 96% and 97% removal by utilizing TAg0.1 and TAu10, respectively, in comparison to bare anatase-TiO2 (77%).

Abstract
For many decades, titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductor has been extensively applied in several environmental applications due to its higher photocatalytic performances toward different organic pollutants, pharmaceutical compounds, and bacteria. However, its shortfall response to visible light, and the expeditious recombination rate of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, hampers its utilization. Doping TiO2 semiconductor with silver nanoparticles is a sound strategy to (1) extend its photocatalytic activity to visible light, (2) prevent the electron/holes pairs recombination due to the formation of the Schottky barrier at the interfaces with TiO2 that act as an electron-trapping center, and (3) enhance its bactericide performances. This review focuses on the recent progress on silver-doped titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2)-based photocatalysts. It addresses a wide range of Ag/TiO2 synthesis techniques, their physicochemical properties and discusses thoroughly the important role of silver (Ag) nanoparticles in enhancing the removal capacity and antibacterial performances of the Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in indoor spaces (e.g., homes or offices) and are often related to various illnesses, some of them with carcinogenic potential. The origins of VOC release in the indoor environment are in office products, building materials, electronics, cleaning products, furniture, and maintenance products. VOC removal can be done based on two types of technologies: adsorption in specific materials and decomposition via oxidative processes. The present article reports the development and photocatalytic activity of two heterostructures (Cu2S/WO3 and Cu2S/SnO2) used for indoor air decontamination. The acetaldehyde removal rate is discussed in correlation with the S-scheme mechanisms established between the heterostructure components but also comparatively with the bare catalysts' activity. Acetaldehyde was considered as a VOC reference because it was found by the International Agency for Research on Cancer to be one of the most frequent air toxins with potential carcinogenic effects. The samples contained monoclinic WO3, tetragonal SnO2, and orthorhombic Cu2S crystalline structures. The Cu2S crystallite size in the heterostructure varied from 75.9 to 82.4 Å, depending on the metal oxide substrate. The highest photocatalytic efficiency (75.7%) corresponded to Cu2S/SnO2, with a constant rate of 0.106 s-1 (which was three times faster than WO3 or SnO2 and seven and a half times faster than Cu2S).

Abstract
In the present work, a novel (2D/2D) accordion like CS@g‒C3N4/MX hybrid composite was prepared through one-pot hydro-thermal synthesis method and utilized as a catalyst for the degradation of organic persistent dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB). Because the removal of such organic compounds is a major dispute in environmental aspects. In this study, the bio-assisted g‒C3N4/MX nanosheets was utilized for the removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, respectively. The CS@g-C3N4/MX photocatalyst showed high catalytic activity based on ~99% and ~98.5% degradation of MB and RhB within 60 and 40 min using visible light irradiation. This outcome could have resulted in greater catalytic enactment towards the degradation of other persistent pollutants with enhanced light absorption property and it can efficiently suppress photo-generated charge recombination, thus improving the interfacial charge transfer rate. The OH radical was being effective oxidative species involved in the CS@g-C3N4/MX system for the degradation of organic contaminants. Furthermore, CS@g-C3N4/MX showed excellent photo-stability over five consecutive cycles for the degradation of organic dyes with negligible loss of photocatalytic activity. Finally, the purposed catalytic mechanisms and degradation pathways of MB and RhB were systematically discussed in detail based on experimental results. Thus, the organics which oxidized into ring-opened compounds such as ethoxyethane, butadiene etc., to non-toxic products like H2O, CO2 and some mineral salts.

Abstract
Methylene blue is a refractory pollutant commonly present in textile wastewater. This study tests the feasibility of TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) composite in enhancing photocatalytic degradation of MB in synthetic wastewater with respect to scientific and engineering aspects. To enhance its removal, we vary the composition of the composite based on the TiO2 weight. Under UV-vis irradiation, the effects of photocatalyst's dose, pH, and reaction time on MB removal by the composites are evaluated under optimum conditions, while any changes in their physico-chemical properties before and after treatment are analyzed by using TEM, SEM, XRD, FTIR and BET. The photodegradation pathways of the target pollutant by the composite and its removal mechanisms are also elaborated. It is found that the same composite with a 1:2 wt ratio of GO/TiO2 has the largest surface area of 104.51 m2/g. Under optimum reactions (0.2 g/L of dose, pH 10, and 5 mg/L of pollutant's concentration), an almost complete MB removal could be attained within 4 h. This result is higher than that of the TiO2 alone (30%) under the same conditions. Since the treated effluents could meet the strict discharge standard limit of ≤0.2 μg/L set by China's regulation, subsequent biological treatments are unnecessary for completing biodegradation of remaining oxidation by-products in the wastewater effluents.

Abstract
Borate toxicity is a concern in agriculture since a high level of borates may likely exist in irrigation water systems. In this research, transmission infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are employed to study the thermal and photochemical reactions of isopropoxy tetramethyl dioxaborolane (ITDB) on TiO2, with the aid of density functional theory calculations. In addition, the possibility for the formation of a boron-modified TiO2 (B/TiO2) surface, using ITDB as the boron source, is explored and the photocatalytic activity of the B/TiO2 is tested. After adsorption of ITDB on TiO2 at 35 °C and heating the surface to a temperature higher than ∼200 °C in a vacuum, the surface is found to be covered with both the organic components of OC(CH3)2-C(CH3)2O and OCH(CH3)2 and the inorganic components of (TiO2)BO and Ti-B-O. The organic intermediates can be further thermally transformed into pinacolone and acetone; however, the inorganic parts exist at 400 °C, forming a boron-modified surface. The thermal decomposition of ITDB is proposed to be initiated by breaking one B-O bond, forming -OC(CH3)2-C(CH3)2O-B-OCH(CH3)2 on the surface. In the case of photoreaction, the ITDB on TiO2 decomposes under photoirradiation at 325 nm to form acetone. The boron-modified TiO2 surface can absorb visible light, likely due to the presence of new states in the band gap, and shows a photocatalytical activity in degrading methylene blue, under 500 nm irradiation in air.
