Luminescent lanthanide coordination polymers with transformative energy transfer processes for physical and chemical sensing applications

Dual Challenge-Response Systems of a Three-Dimensional "Bionic" Fluorescent Physically Unclonable Function Label

Inspired by the light and dark variations observed in natural cloud clusters under sunlight, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) "bionic" fluorescent physically unclonable function (PUF) label. The minimalist preparation process eliminates the need for expensive traditional instruments, thus offering new insight into the widespread adoption of 3D PUF labels. The Eu(CCA)3(H2O)2 powder, which is the first to propose its secondary building unit, was chosen as the fluorescent material. Its 3D morphology is preserved in the resin to mimic cloud-like structures. Furthermore, the luminescent properties are elucidated through experimental tests and first-principles calculations. To overcome the coding capacity limitation of traditional two-dimensional (2D) fluorescent PUF labels, a dual challenge-response system model is proposed. The shallow and deep models provide anticounterfeiting information from macro and micro perspectives, respectively. This successfully increases the encoding capacity from 210×10 to 2100×10000 for a 10 × 10 pixel binary code. Therefore, 3D "bionic" fluorescent PUF labels strike a balance between the simple usage of PUF labels and enhanced label security.

Fluorescent assay for acetylcholinesterase activity and inhibitor screening based on lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials

It is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to achieve the on-site activity evaluation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the hydrolase of acetylcholine (ACh). Herein, we have developed a biosensing method endowed with considerable superiority based on the organic-inorganic hybrid composite Eu(DPA)3@Lap with excellent stability and fluorescent properties for this purpose by loading Eu3+ ions and 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA) into LAPONITE® (Lap). Through the comprehensive consideration of the specific hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine (ATCh) into thiocholine (TCh) by AChE, the high binding affinity of TCh to copper ion (Cu2+), and the selective fluorescence quenching ability of Cu2+, a simple Eu(DPA)3@Lap-based assay was developed to realize the rapid and convenient evaluation of AChE activity. Owning to the facile signal on-off-on response mode with a clear PET-based sensing mechanism, our assay presents favorable selectivity and sensitivity (LOD of 0.5 mU mL-1). Furthermore, the fluorescent assay was successfully applied for assessing AChE activity in human serum samples and screening potential AChE inhibitors, showing potential for application in the early diagnosis and drug screening of AD, as a new development path of AD therapy.

Facile construction of an anthracene-decorated highly luminescent coordination polymer for the selective detection of explosive nitroaromatics and the mutagenic pollutant TNP

Explosive nitroaromatic compounds (epNACs) are a group of chemicals that have caused significant human casualties through terrorist attacks and they also pose health risks. For the benefit of homeland security and environmental health, there is room for advancing research on the precise detection of epNACs. Coordination polymers (CPs) successfully serve this purpose because of their binding abilities and quenching capabilities. In this regard, a one-dimensional (1D) CP [Zn(bdc)(avp)2(H2O)]n (1; H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and avp = 4-[2-(9-anthryl)vinyl]pyridine) was synthesized, which remarkably demonstrated extremely efficient ratiometric and selective sensing capacity toward epNACs and the mutagenic pollutant 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with a quick response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided a thorough analysis of the mechanistic routes behind the quenching reaction. Herein, geometrically accessible interaction sites were strategically decorated using anthracene moieties, allowing the quick and precise detection of explosive nitro derivatives and the carcinogenic pollutant TNP with increased sensitivity.

Differential sensitization toward lanthanide metal-organic framework for detection of an anthrax biomarker

A novel Tb-doped Eu-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF@Tb) has been developed by incorporating hexanuclear europium cluster and 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid as well as coordination with Tb(III). Owing to the diverse coordination status of Tb(III) and Eu(III) in MOF, antenna effect emission from Tb(III) can be invoked by dipicolinic acid (DPA), but the luminescence originating from Eu(III) remains unchanged. Taking advantage of this phenomenon, a ratiometric luminescent method for detection of DPA, a biomarker for Bacillus subtilis spores, was developed through differential sensitization toward lanthanide ions. This analysis method allowed for the detection of DPA in the 0.2-10 μM concentration range, with a detection limit of 60 nM. It was further validated by spiked recoveries (89.3-110%) of real-world samples with RSD values in the range 3.9-11%. Alongside this, a paper indicator test was prepared for naked-eye detection of DPA via a dose-sensitive color evolution from red to green under UV light. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was explored in the detection of bacterial spores in real biological and environmental samples and indicated great potential for applications as a real-time monitoring system against the anthrax threat.

Blue-Emitting Ligand-Mediated Assembly of Rare-Earth MOFs toward White-Light Emission, Sensing, Magnetic, and Catalytic Studies

New lanthanide carboxylate compounds with two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structures have been prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as an organic linker. The compounds, [Ln(C₁₄H₈O₆)(C₇O₃H₄)·2H₂O]·4(H₂O), Ln = Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy and [Ln(C₇O₃H₄)₃·(C₃H₇ON)·(H₂O)]·2(H₂O)(C₃H₇NO), Ln = La, Ce, Pr, have two- and three-dimensional structures, respectively. In all compounds, lanthanide ions are connected together, forming a dimer, which is connected by the 2,5-BPTA ligand. In the two-dimensional structure, there are two 2,5-BPTA moieties present, and in the three-dimensional structure, there are three 2,5-BPTA moieties present. The lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated, the 2D structure has a tricapped trigonal prismatic arrangement, and the 3D structure has a monocapped distorted square antiprismatic arrangement. The Pr compound forms in both 2D and 3D structures, whose formation depends on the time of the reaction (2 days─2D and 5-6 days─3D). The ligand emits in the blue region, and using the characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ (red) and Tb³⁺ (green) ions, we achieve white light emission in the (Y_0.96Tb_0.02Eu_0.02) compound. The overall quantum yield for the white light emission is 28%. The strong green luminescence of the Tb³⁺-containing compound was employed to selectively sense the Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions in aqueous solution with limits of detection (LODs) at 0.41 and 8.6 ppm, respectively. The Tb compound was found to be a good heterogeneous catalyst for the Ullman-type O-arylation reaction between phenol and bromoarene with yields of 95%. Magnetic studies on the Gd-, Tb-, and Dy-containing compounds showed weak exchange interactions within the dimeric Ln₂ units. The present work demonstrates the many utilities of the rare-earth-containing MOFs, especially toward white-light emission, metal-ion sensing, and heterogeneous catalysis.

S-Heptazine N-ligand based luminescent coordination materials: synthesis, structural and luminescent studies of lanthanide-cyamelurate networks

Various series of lanthanide metal-organic networks denoted Ln-Cy (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions using potassium cyamelurate (K₃Cy) and lanthanide nitrate salts. All obtained materials were fully characterized, and their crystal structures were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Four types of coordination modes were elucidated for the Ln-Cy series with different Ln³⁺ coordination geometries. Structural studies were performed to compare the various coordination compounds of the Ln-Cy series. Moreover, the cyamelurate linkers of rich π-conjugated and uncoordinated Lewis basic sites were used as an absorbing chromophore to enhance the luminescence quantum efficiency, the band emission and the luminescence lifetime of the coordinated Ln metal centers. Solid-state UV-visible measurements combined with density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were performed to further explore luminescent features of the Ln-Cy series and their origins.

Crystal structure and photoluminescent properties of a new EuIII–phthalate–acetate coordination polymer

The crystal structure of a new one-dimensional [Eu^III(phth)(OAc)(H₂O)] coordination polymer and its room-temperature photoluminescent properties are reported.

A new coordination polymer, poly[(acetato)aqua(μ₃-phthalato)europium(III)], [Eu(C₈H₄O₄)(CH₃O₂)(H₂O)]_n or [Eu^III(phth)(OAc)(H₂O)] (phth²⁻ = phthalate and OAc⁻ = acetate) was synthesized and characterized, revealing it to be a supra­molecular assembly of one-dimensional [Eu^III(phth)(OAc)(H₂O)] chains. Each chain is built up of edge-sharing distorted tricapped trigonal–prismatic TPRS-{Eu^IIIO₉} building motifs and assembled in a regular fashion through hydrogen-bonding and aromatic π–π inter­actions. The fully deprotonated phth²⁻ ligand was shown to be an effective sensitizer, promoting the characteristic ⁵D₀→⁷F_J (J = 1–4) emissions of Eu^III even in the presence of the non-sensitizing OAc⁻ group.
