The effect of curing conditions on the dentin bond strength of two dual-cure resin cements

Touch-cure activation by marketed universal resin luting cements of their associated primer to dentin

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate the dentin shear bond strength (SBS) and bonding interface of three recently developed "universal" resin luting cements based on different modalities.

METHODS

The dentin SBS and interfacial analysis of three recently launched "universal" resin luting cements, namely, G-Cem One, RelyX Universal and Panavia SA cement universal, were studied. All bonding protocols, including the previous use of their dedicated primer or universal adhesive in touch-cure mode or light-cure mode were performed. Variolink Esthetic LC used in conjunction with Scotchbond Universal Plus was used as a control group. For each group (n = 9), 10 specimens were tested for dentin SBS and two were examined by scanning electron microscopy. SBS were analyzed by two-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's test.

RESULTS

SBS values showed that the three "universal" resin luting cements tested exhibit different adhesive behaviors. G-Cem One with its touch-cure activated primer had a greater SBS to dentin (25.5 MPa) than that of the control group (22.1 MPa).

CONCLUSION

"Universal" resin luting cements have variable efficacy when used in self-curing mode. The touch-curing mode is also of concern but may show high potential for some formulations.

Comparing Various Resin Luting Cement Systems in Different Etching Modes Through Bond Durability and Morphological Features

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate bond performance of various resin luting cement (RLC) systems on enamel and dentin in different etching modes and to compare the RLC-tooth interface morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

METHODS AND MATERIALS

The self-adhesive RLC systems used in combination with universal adhesives were as follows: Scotchbond Universal Adhesive Plus + RelyX Universal (3M Oral Care) and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick ER + SA Luting Multi (Kuraray Noritake Dental). These RLC systems were also used alone as self-adhesive RLC systems without universal adhesives (self-adhesive mode). The conventional RLC systems for comparison materials were as follows: BeautiBond Xtream + ResiCem EX (Shofu) and Tooth Primer + Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake Dental). Twelve specimens were prepared for each group to measure shear bond strength (SBS) in different etching modes. A stainless-steel rod was used as a substitute for indirect restorations. Bonded specimens were allocated to baseline (stored for 24 hours) and artificially aged (thermocycling [TC] for 10,000 cycles) groups. Representative treated tooth surfaces and RLC-tooth interfaces were observed using SEM.

RESULTS

Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that all the factors (etching mode, storage period, and RLC system) had a significant influence on the enamel SBS values (p<0.05). Enamel SBS was significantly higher in etch-&-rinse (ER) mode than in self-etch (SE) mode, regardless of RLC system or storage period. Three-way ANOVA showed that all the factors had a significant influence on the dentin SBS values (p<0.001). Most RLC systems showed significantly higher dentin SBS in SE mode than in ER mode, regardless of storage period. However, the combination with Scotchbond Universal Adhesive Plus and RelyX Universal showed no significant difference in SBS values between etching modes at the baseline and showed a significantly higher SBS value in ER mode than in SE mode after TC.

CONCLUSIONS

The self-adhesive RLC systems with universal adhesives tended to show higher enamel and dentin bond performance than the self-adhesive RLC systems alone. The morphology of treated tooth surfaces and resin cement-tooth interfaces were dependent on the RLC system and etching mode used. The RLC systems with primer application showed a thin, high-density layer above the intact dentin in both etching modes, suggesting chemical interaction.

Influence of different curing modes on the bonding effectiveness of self-adhesive resin luting cements in combination with universal adhesives

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the immediate dentin bond performance and bond durability of self-adhesive resin luting cements (RLCs) in combination with universal adhesives in different curing modes.

METHODS

Two self-adhesive RLCs were used with universal adhesives as primers. They were also used alone as self-adhesive RLCs. Two multiple-step RLC systems were used as comparison materials. To measure the shear bond strength (SBS) in different curing modes, 12 specimens were prepared for each group. Stainless-steel rods were bonded to bovine dentin, and the bonded specimens were assigned to the baseline group (stored for 24 h) and artificially aged group (thermal cycling [TC], 10,000 cycles). After each storage period, the SBS of the bonded specimens was measured. The Knoop hardness number (KHN) of the cured RLCs was measured with or without primer application in different curing modes at 24 h and after 10,000 TC. The representative RLC/dentin interfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

RESULTS

Dentin SBS was significantly influenced by the RLC system but not by the curing mode. Self-adhesive RLCs alone showed significantly lower SBS values than self-adhesive RLCs with primer regardless of the curing mode or storage period. The storage period, curing mode, and RLC system significantly influenced the KHN.

SIGNIFICANCE

The use of universal adhesives as a primer may help enhance the immediate dentin bond performance and bond durability of self-adhesive RLCs.

A Blinded Comparative Study of Four Commercially Available LEDs and a Laser Light Curing Device

OBJECTIVE

 This study determined the effectiveness of five light-curing units (LCUs; four light-emitting diode [LED] and one laser) used on different settings to photo-activate four conventional resin-based composites (RBCs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 A total of 108 RBC specimens were photo-activated in a white Delrin mold representing a mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) class II restoration in a molar tooth. The proximal boxes were 5 mm deep, and the mesial-distal length was 12 mm. Immediately after photo-curing, the RBC specimens were immersed in a solvent to remove the uncured materials, after which they were photographed and deidentified. A Research Electronic Data Capture survey was created using these images and sent to respondents who blindly assessed the ability of the various LCUs to photo-cure the MOD restorations.

RESULTS

 There were significant differences in how the five curing lights had cured RBCs. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), pairwise t-test, Welch's one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis rank test in the blinded survey data showed significant differences between the LED curing lights used for two 10-second cures and the laser curing light used for 1 second, and LED lights at lower settings.

CONCLUSION

 There was a significant difference in how the curing lights could photo-cure the RBCs used in this study. The laser curing light used for 1 second produced the worst results in all four RBCs.

Ability of short exposures from laser and quad-wave curing lights to photo-cure bulk-fill resin-based composites

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the ability of a laser, and a 'quad-wave' LCU, to photo-cure paste and flowable bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs).

METHODS

Five LCUs and nine exposure conditions were used. The laser LCU (Monet) used for 1 s and 3 s, the quad-wave LCU (PinkWave) used for 3 s in the Boost and 20 s in the Standard modes, the the multi-peak LCU (Valo X) used for 5 s in the Xtra and 20 s in the Standard modes, were compared to the polywave PowerCure used in the 3 s mode and for 20 s in the Standard mode, and to the mono-peak SmartLite Pro used for 20 s. Two paste consistency bulk-fill RBCs: Filtek One Bulk Fill Shade A2 (3 M), Tetric PowerFill Shade IVA (Ivoclar Vivadent), and two flowable RBCs: Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Shade A2 (3 M), Tetric PowerFlow Shade IVA (Ivoclar Vivadent) were photo-cured in 4-mm deep x 4-mm diameter metal molds. The light received by these specimens was measured using a spectrometer (Flame-T, Ocean Insight), and the radiant exposure delivered to the top surface of the RBCs was mapped. The immediate degree of conversion (DC) at the bottom, and the 24-hour Vickers Hardness (VH) at the top and bottom of the RBCs were measured and compared.

RESULTS

The irradiance received by the 4-mm diameter specimens ranged from 1035 mW/cm² (SmartLite Pro) to 5303 mW/cm² (Monet). The radiant exposures between 350 and 500 nm delivered to the top surface of the RBCs ranged from 5.3 J/cm² (Monet in 1 s) to 26.4 J/cm² (Valo X), although the PinkWave delivered 32.1 J/cm² in 20 s 350 to 900 nm. All four RBCs achieved their maximum DC and VH values at the bottom when photo-cured for 20 s. The Monet used for 1 s and the PinkWave used for 3 s on the Boost setting delivered the lowest radiant exposures between 420 and 500 nm (5.3 J/cm² and 3.5 J/cm² respectively), and they produced the lowest DC and VH values.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite delivering a high irradiance, the short 1 or 3-s exposures delivered less energy to the RBC than 20-s exposures from LCUs that deliver> 1000 mW/cm². There was an excellent linear correlation (r > 0.98) between the DC and the VH at the bottom. There was a logarithmic relationship between the DC and the radiant exposure (Pearson's r = 0.87-97) and between the VH and the radiant exposure (Pearson's r = 0.92-0.96) delivered in the 420-500 nm range.

Effect of thickness on the degree of conversion of two bulk-fill and one conventional posterior resin-based composites at high irradiance and high temporal resolution

OBJECTIVES

This study: 1) measures the effect of sample thickness and high irradiance on the depth-dependent time delay before photopolymerization reaction onset; 2) determines if exposure reciprocity exists; 3) measures the conversion rate at four irradiance levels; 4) determines the time, t0, at which the maximum DC rate is reached for two bulk-fill and one conventional posterior resin-based composites (RBCs).

METHODS

Tetric PowerFill IVA shade (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Aura bulk-fill ultra universal restorative (SDI), and one conventional posterior resin-based composite (RBC), Heliomolar A3 (Ivoclar Vivadent), that were either 0.2 mm, 2 mm, or 4 mm thick were photocured using a modified Bluephase G4 (Ivoclar Vivadent) light-curing unit (LCU) that delivered a single emission band (wavelength centered at 449 nm). The same radiant exposure of 24 J/cm2 was delivered at irradiances ranging from 0.5 to 3 W/cm2 by adjusting the exposure time. PowerFill was also photocured for 3 s or 6 s using a Bluephase PowerCure LCU (Ivoclar Vivadent) on the 3 s mode setting. The degree of conversion (DC) was measured in real-time at a high temporal resolution at 30 °C using Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) FTIR spectroscopy with a sampling rate of 13 DC data points per second. The DC data were analyzed using a phenomenological autocatalytic model. The RBC viscosity was measured at 21 °C and 30 °C. Light transmission through the RBC samples at 22 °C was monitored with time to calculate the extinction coefficients of the RBCs.

RESULTS

The time delay before photopolymerization started increased as the RBC thickness increased and the irradiance decreased. An autocatalytic model described the DC data. The time t0 was less than 77 ms for the 0.2 mm thick samples of PowerFill irradiated using the highest irradiance of 3 W/cm2. Among the three RBCs for each sample thickness and irradiance level, the PowerFill had the smallest time t0. There was a time delay of 0.59 s and 1.25 s before the DC started to increase at the bottom of 4 mm thick samples for the PowerFill and Aura, respectively, when an irradiance of 1 W/cm2 was delivered. The time delay increased to 3.65 s for the Aura when an irradiance of 0.5 W/cm2 was delivered. The extinction coefficients near 449 nm were 0.78 mm-1, 0.76 mm-1, and 1.55 mm-1 during the first 2 s after the start of photocuring of PowerFill, Aura, and Heliomolar, respectively. Only PowerFill followed exposure reciprocity. At T = 30 °C, the viscosity was 3400, 17000, and 5200 Paˑs for PowerFill, Aura, and Heliomolar, respectively.

SIGNIFICANCE

The time delay between when photopolymerization starts at the top and bottom of 2- or 4-mm thick RBC restorations may affect the structural integrity of the bond between the tooth and the bottom of the restoration. Only PowerFill followed exposure reciprocity between irradiance levels of 0.5 to 3 W/cm2. Exposure reciprocity did not occur for Aura or Heliomolar, neither of which are optimized for short light exposure or high irradiance conditions.

Current Protocols for Resin-Bonded Dental Ceramics

Resin-bonded ceramic restorations are common treatment options. Clinical longevity of resin-bonded ceramic restorations depends on the quality and durability of the resin-ceramic bond. The type and composition of the specific ceramic determines the selection of the most effective bonding protocol. Such protocol typically includes a surface pretreatment step followed by application of a priming agent. Understanding of fundamental ceramic properties and chemical compositions enables the clinician to make proper material selection decisions for clinically successful and long-lasting restorations. Based on research accrued over the past decades, this article reviews and discusses current resin-bonding protocols to most commonly used dental ceramics.

Retention durability of one-retainer versus two-retainer posterior RBFDPs after chewing simulation

The clinical use of one-retainer RBFDPs in the anterior region has shown higher survival rates compared to conventional two-retainer RBFDPs. The motivation for this study was to assess the validity of this observation when extended to the posterior region. The aim was thus to evaluate different preparation and framework designs for replacing premolars, particularly one-retainer versus two-retainer designs, on the retention of monolithic zirconia posterior RBFDPs. Extracted caries-free human premolars and third molars were embedded in auto-curing resin to create models with an edentulous space of premolar width. Abutment teeth were prepared according to these six designs (n = 8 each): one or two upper retainers with narrow rests, one or two upper retainers with wide rests, and one or two-retainers with wide rests. RBFDPs were milled from monolithic zirconia (KATANA Zirconia HT), and were adhesively bonded using Panavia V5 with corresponding primers. After thermodynamic loading, the quasi-static tensile force required for failure was determined. Failure modes were evaluated using a microscope. Survival rates after thermodynamic loading were 75% for one group (one upper-molar retainer with narrow rest), 100% for the other groups. The debonding forces ranged from 310 ± 224 N (group one upper-molar retainer with narrow rest) to 927 ± 292 N (group two upper retainers with narrow rests). Two-retainer designs failed at significantly higher tensile forces than designs with one retainer (p ≤ 0.05). There were no significant differences between upper and lower designs, or rest widths. Although RBFDPs with two retainers withstood higher debonding forces, RBFDPs with one retainer and wide rest still have a high potential for clinical treatment because of the high forces required for their debonding.

Depth of cure of 10 resin-based composites light-activated using a laser diode, multi-peak, and single-peak light-emitting diode curing lights

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the depth of cure (DOC) of ten contemporary resin-based composites (RBCs), light-cured using different LCUs and exposure times.

METHODS

The power, radiant emittance, irradiance, radiant exposure (RE), and beam profiles from a laser (M, Monet), a multi-peak (V, Valo Grand), and single-peak (S, SmartLite Pro) LCU were measured. The DOC was measured using a 6-mm diameter metal mold and a solvent dissolution method to remove the uncured RBC. The length of the remaining RBC was divided by 2. The exposure times were: 1s and 3s for M, 10s and 20s for V, and 10s and 20s for S. Data were analyzed using: Bland-Altman distribution, Pearson's Correlation, and an artificial neural network (ANN) to establish the relative importance of the factors on the DOC (α=0.05; β=0.2).

RESULTS

Significant differences were found in the DOC of the different LCUs and composites. The laser LCU emitted the highest power, radiant emittance, and irradiance. However, this LCU used for 1 s delivered the lowest RE and produced the shortest DOC in all ten RBCs. The ANN demonstrated that the RE is the most critical factor for the DOC. Bland-Altman comparisons showed that the DOCs achieved with the laser LCU used for 1s were between 17 - 34 % shorter than the other conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the laser LCU cured all 10 RBCs when used for 1s, it produced the shallowest DOC, and some RBCs did not achieve the minimum DOC threshold. The RE and not the irradiance was the most important factor in determining the DOC of RBCs.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Despite delivering high power and irradiance, the laser used for l s delivered a lower radiant exposure than the conventional LCUs used for 10 s. This resulted in a shorter DOC.

Immediate bond performance of resin composite luting systems to saliva-contaminated enamel and dentin in different curing modes

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate shear bond strength of resin composite luting systems to tooth with or without saliva contamination in different curing modes. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was measured. Four combinations of resin composite luting systems were used. The shear bond strength to bovine teeth was measured with and without saliva contamination in different curing modes at different storage periods. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was also evaluated. Significantly lower enamel and dentin shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values were observed in all resin composite luting systems at 5 min versus 24 h, regardless of the curing mode or saliva contamination. The influence of the curing mode of the resin composite luting systems on shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number was dependent on material. For the saliva contamination conditions, only G-CEM ONE EM did not show any significant difference in shear bond strength among the groups with and without saliva contamination, regardless of curing mode, storage period, or tooth substrate. All the resin composite luting systems showed lower shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values immediately after setting.

Effect of aging on color stability of amine-free resin cement through the ceramic laminate veneer

Background

This study aimed to assess the color change of two amine-free dual-cure resin cements following aging in comparison with a light-cure resin cement.

Materials and Methods

This in vitro, experimental study evaluated 6 groups (n = 10), including three groups of cements bonded to feldspathic porcelain and three groups of resin cements alone. Panavia V5 (Kuraray) and G-CEM LinkForce (GC) dual-cure resin cements and Choice 2 (Bisco) light-cure resin cements were bonded to porcelain according to the manufacturers' instructions. The color parameters of the groups were measured before and after 5000 thermal cycles by spectrophotometry. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α =0.05).

Results

The color change (ΔE) of the cement groups alone was significantly greater than that of porcelain-bonded cements. The ΔE of G-CEM LinkForce cement group was significantly higher than that of Panavia V5 group (P = 0.020), and the ΔE of the latter group was significantly higher than that of Choice 2 cement group (P = 0.021).

Conclusion

Considering the color change of cements evaluated in this study, Choice 2 and Panavia V5 cements bonded to porcelain showed acceptable color change, which indicates that they are suitable for cementation of esthetic dental restorations. Ceramic laminates have become an ideal esthetic treatment for anterior restorations. The resin cement discoloration can affect final appearance of these restorations. Besides that, exposed resin cement line can lead to the esthetic problem over time.

Influence of the resin-coating technique on the bonding performance of self-adhesive resin cements in single-visit computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing resin restorations

OBJECTIVE

This in vitro study investigated the influence of resin coating on the bonding performance of self-adhesive resin cements in single-visit computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) resin restorations.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

CAD/CAM resin (1.5-mm thick) was mounted on 20 noncoated and 20 resin-coated human dentin surfaces using dual-cured self-adhesive resin cements (Panavia SA Cement Plus or Panavia SA Cement Universal, Kuraray Noritake Dental) in either self-curing or dual-curing mode. These specimens were sectioned into beam-shaped sticks and subjected to microtensile bond strength tests after 24 h of water storage. The obtained data were statistically analyzed with three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The three-way ANOVA results revealed the significant influence of resin coating, resin cement, and curing mode. Resin coating and light curing led to higher bond strengths in almost all groups. Resin-coated dentin with Panavia SA Cement Plus exhibited a mean bond strength greater than 35 MPa in both self-curing and dual-curing modes.

CONCLUSIONS

In single-visit CAD/CAM resin restorations, resin coating, resin cement selection, and curing mode influenced the bonding performance of self-adhesive resin cements. In addition, resin coating and light curing increased the bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements. Resin coating and light curing are encouraged for predictable bonding performance of dual-cured self-adhesive resin cements in single-visit CAD/CAM resin restorations.

Influence of the activation mode on long-term bond strength and endogenous enzymatic activity of dual-cure resin cements

Objective

To investigate the long-term microtensile bond strength (µTBS), interfacial nanoleakage expression (NL), and adhesive stability of dual-cure resin cements with/out light activation to dentin.

Materials and methods

Composite overlays (N = 20) were luted to deep dentin surfaces with RelyX Ultimate (RXU, 3M) or Variolink EstheticDC (VAR, Ivoclar-Vivadent). A universal adhesive was used for bonding procedures (iBond universal, Heraeus Kulzer). The resin cements were either self-cured (SC; 1 h at 37 °C) or dual-cured (DC; 20s light-cure followed by 15 min self-cure at 37 °C). Specimens were submitted to µTBS immediately (T₀) or after 1 year of laboratory storage (T₁₂). The fracture pattern was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed with two-way ANOVA/Tukey test. Further, the NL was quantified and analyzed (chi-square test) and in situ zymography was performed to evaluate the endogenous enzymatic activity within the hybrid layer (HL) at T₀ and T₁₂ (Mann–Whitney test)_. The significance level for all statistical tests was set at p = 0.05.

Results

DC resulted in higher bond strength and decreased fluorescence at the adhesive interface, irrespective of the material and the storage period (p < 0.05). Significantly lower bonding performances (p < 0.05) and higher endogenous enzymatic activity (p < 0.05) were observed within the HL at T₁₂ compared to T₀ in all tested groups.

Conclusions

Light-curing the dual-cure resin cements, more than the cement materials, accounted for good bonding performances and higher HL stability over time when used with a universal adhesive.

Clinical significance

The curing condition influences the bonding performances of dual-cure resin cements to dentin when used with a universal adhesive.

Retention of posterior resin bonded fixed dental prostheses with different designs after chewing simulation

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different preparation and framework designs on the retention of posterior resin bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) made from monolithic zirconia ceramic. Forty-eight caries-free upper premolars and forty-eight upper third molars were used in this study. The teeth were randomly divided into six main groups (n = 8 each) according to the preparation design of two-retainer RBFDPs: narrow or wide rest, combined with 0, 1 or 2 retainer wings. All RBFDPs were milled from monolithic zirconia (KATANA Zirconia ML). They were bonded using Panavia V5 with its corresponding primer, and underwent thermodynamic loading (98 N, 1,200,000 cycles). Retention was evaluated for the surviving RBFDPs in a universal testing machine by means of a debonding test. Failure modes were evaluated using a light microscope. Data was statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Shapiro-Wilk followed by Mann-Whitney with Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. The survival rates after the chewing simulation were 75% (group narrow rest/no retainer wing), 62.5% (group wide rest/no retainer wing) and 100% (the other groups). The mean retention ranged from 31 N to 766 N. Designs with two retainer wings showed significantly higher bond strength than the other designs (p ≤ 0.05). The rest width did not show a significant effect on the retention. Posterior RBFDPs with a modified design (occlusal rest and two retainer wings) exhibited promising durability and retention. Designs with two additional retainer wings should be preferred over designs with one or no retainer wing, irrespectively of the rest width.

Evaluation of microhardness and water sorption/solubility of dual-cure resin cement through monolithic zirconia in different shades

Aim:

The objective is to evaluate the effect of shades of monolithic zirconia on the microhardness and sorption/solubility of the underlying two dual-cured resin types of cement.

Materials and Methods:

Eighty samples of two dual-cured resin cement discs were polymerized under 60 monolithic zirconia discs in three shades and directly activated resin discs of cement were used as the control group (n = 10). After 24 h storage at 37°C in an incubator, Vickers microhardness and the sorption and solubility were measured.

Statistical Analysis Used:

Two-way ANOVA , one-way ANOVA, Independent t-test, Tukey's honestly significant difference, and Tamhane's T2 tests.

Results:

The mean microhardness of the Variolink N resin cements were significantly higher than Panavia SA ones (P < 0.001). Furthermore, Variolink N cements exhibited lower sorption/solubility than Panavia SA resin cements (both P < 0.05). The ceramic shade had a significant influence on the microhardness of both cements (P < 0.001) but had no significant effect on the sorption/solubility of resin cements (P > 0.05).

Conclusion:

Interposition of monolithic zirconia decreases the microhardness of resin cement especially Panavia SA. In Variolink N, by increasing the chroma saturation of ceramics, the microhardness decreased, however in Panavia SA, it was altered by the shades, but not in a specific pattern. For both cements, there were no statistical differences between the sorption/solubility of samples photo-cured under different shades. There was a reverse correlation between microhardness and water sorption/solubility of both cements.

Influence of Tooth Mold Materials in Composite Resin CAD/CAM Crown Destructive Test

A range of experimental designs have been used in destructive testing of composite resin CAD/CAM crowns. Various materials have been adopted for the abutment in such tests, including human or bovine dentin, stainless steel, PMMA, and composite resin, the selection of which is made in accordance with study objective or preference of the researcher. The purpose of this study was to determine how the material selected for the abutment material affected fracture load and maximum displacement. Destructive tests were conducted on composite resin crowns of the same design. Three types of material were used for the abutments together with 2 types of adhesive material. Images of each sample were acquired before destruction using a microfocus X-ray CT scanner to confirm the feasibility of a non-destructive test.The load required to fracture the composite CAD/CAM resin crowns depended on the abutment material used, with a decrease being observed in the order of composite resin, stainless steel, and PMMA. Maximum displacement decreased in the order of PMMA, composite resin, and stainless steel. Differences in the material used for setting (adhesive resin or polycarboxylate cement) showed no effect on fracture load. These results indicate that the load required to achieve destruction of resin CAD/CAM crowns varies according to the abutment material used.

The effect of curing mode of dual-cure resin cements on bonding performance of universal adhesives to enamel, dentin and various restorative materials

The effect of curing mode of dual-cure resin cements on the tensile bond strength (TBS) of universal adhesives to enamel, dentin, zirconia, lithium disilicate ceramics (LDS), feldspathic porcelain (FP), and a Pd-Au alloy was evaluated. The substrates were bonded using Tokuyama Universal Bond (TUB) or Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SBU), followed by luting with Estecem II (ECII) or Rely-X Ultimate (RXU), respectively, which were used either in light-curing or self-curing mode. The TBS test was performed after 24 h or 5,000 thermal cycles. Light-curing significantly improved the 24-h TBS of TUB/ECII to enamel, dentin and FP, as well as the TBS of SBU/RXU to all substrates except LDS. After thermal cycling, light-curing significantly increased the TBS of both adhesives/cements to dentin, but significant differences between curing modes were seldom observed for other substrates. This suggested that light-curing is essential for the hydrophilic dentin, but self-curing might be sufficient for other substrates.

CAD/CAM-fabricated inlay restorations: Can the resin-coating technique improve bond strength and internal adaptation?

This study assessed the effect of the resin-coating technique on the bond strength and internal adaptation of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-fabricated inlays. Seventy-two mesio-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared and distributed into 3 groups according to the resin-coating technique utilized: uncoated group, G-Premio Bond (1-step) group, and Clearfil SE Bond 2+Clearfil Majesty ES Flow (2-step+Flow) group. The MOD inlays were fabricated and cemented with RelyX Ultimate (RXU), G-CEM LinkForce (LinkForce), or Panavia V5 (PV5). After 5,000 thermal cycles, each specimen was sectioned and subjected to microtensile bond strength (MTBS) testing and an internal adaptation evaluation. For the uncoated group, RXU exhibited higher MTBS than LinkForce and PV5 (p<0.05). The MTBS of all 1-step and 2-step+Flow groups was greater than 30 MPa. Resin coating did not influence the MTBS of RXU, whereas resin coating increased the MTBS of LinkForce and PV5. More than 95% gap-free margins were found in all groups.

Influence of curing modes on the degree of conversion and mechanical parameters of dual-cured luting agents

PURPOSE

To investigate the effects of different curing modes, including tack cure, on the degree of conversion (DC) and mechanical parameters of dual-cured luting agents for all-ceramic restorations.

METHODS

Immediate light curing, intermittent light curing (2-s tack cure and a 1-min interval before the main cure), delayed light cuing (2-min delay) and chemical or no light curing were used to cure two dual-cured luting agents, RelyX Unicem and PermaCem 2.0, through a 1.5-mm thick lithium disilicate ceramic slide. DC (n=3), micro-hardness (n=5), shrinkage strain (n=4) and shrinkage stress (n=3) were measured under the aforementioned curing modes. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey HSD test, with the level of significance set at α=0.05.

RESULTS

For both luting agents, all the light-curing modes produced similar final DC, but using chemical cure only could significantly reduce the DC. The mechanical parameters followed a similar pattern. There were positive but nonlinear correlations between DC and the other mechanical parameters, with the increase in these parameters with DC being slower initially.

CONCLUSIONS

Provided adequate light curing is applied to a dual-cured luting agent, delaying the light curing or using a tack cure first to facilitate seating of a restoration may not have a significant impact on the luting agent's final degree of conversion. However, using chemical cure only may result in inadequate cure of the luting agent and is recommended only for highly opaque restorations.

The effect of curing mode of a high-power LED unit on bond strengths of dualcure resin cements to dentin and CAD/CAM resin blocks

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of curing mode with a high-power LED curing unit (VALO) in terms of microtensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin and microhardness of two dual-cure resin cements. Panavia V5 (V5) and Rely X Ultimate (RXU) were polymerized using one of three curing modes with VALO or self-cure mode to bond a CAD/CAM resin block to a flat dentin surface. Specimens were sectioned and subjected to μTBS test. Vickers hardness values of V5 and RXU were also measured. Two-way ANOVA indicated curing mode and resin cement affected μTBS. For self-cure mode, V5 had significantly higher μTBS than RXU (p<0.05). Higher irradiance did not always provide higher μTBS of dual-cure resin cement to dentin. One-way ANOVA indicated the curing modes affected microhardness of each cement. As for microhardness of RXU, there were significant differences between selfcure mode and light cure modes (p<0.05).

Comparison of the Effect of Proanthocyanidin Surface Treatments on Shear Bond Strength of Different Cements

This study aimed to compare the effect of proanthocyanidin-rich grape seed extract (Pa-rich GSE) in two different concentrations on the bond strength to dentin tissue for four different cement groups (resin cement (P), resin modified glass ionomer cement (K), calcium aluminate glass ionomer cement (C), glass ionomer cement (G)). One hundred and eighty dentin surfaces of the extracted molar teeth placed on acrylic cylinders were divided into 12 groups randomly (n = 15). Each cement group was further divided into control (CP, CC, CK, CG), 6.5% Pa-rich GSE (P6.5, C6.5, K6.5, G6.5) and 12.5% Pa-rich GSE (P12.5, C12.5, K12.5, G12.5) subgroups. In accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations the cements were applied. After shear bond tests, surfaces were examined under a stereomicroscope. Median shear bond strength (in MPa) of CP, CK, CC, CG groups were 14.13, 7.05, 4.87, 3.86; for the P6.5, G6.5, C6.5, K6.5 groups they were 13.98, 13.42, 6.21, 3.27; and for the P12.5, C12.5, K12.5, G12.5 groups they were 15.08, 5.40, 3.10, 0.00, respectively. CK and K6.5 groups showed a significant difference from the K12.5 group (p < 0.05). Also, CG, G6.5 and G12.5 groups were found statistically different from each other (p < 0.05). Applied to the dentin surface, 6.5% Pa-rich GSE enhanced the bond strength of glass ionomer cements.

Enhancement of dentin bond strength of resin cement using new resin coating materials

The purpose of this study was to investigate combinations of resin coating materials with a dual-cure resin cement for indirect restorations by evaluating microtensile bond strengths (μTBS). Dentin surfaces of human molars were bonded with either a direct or an indirect resin composite with/without the resin coating technique. For the resin coating material, Clearfil SE Bond 2 and either one of Clearfil Protect Liner F, Clearfil Majesty LV, Panavia V5 or an experimental light-cure coating material were used. For the dual-cure resin cement, either Panavia V5 or Panavia F2.0 were used with Panavia V5 Tooth Primer or ED Primer II. Resin coating does not always contribute to the enhancement of μTBS. The highest μTBS was obtained with the resin coating combination of Clearfil SE Bond 2 and Panavia V5, and cementation with Panavia F2.0, which was identical to that of the direct resin composite bonded with Clearfil SE Bond 2.

The effect of elapsed time following alumina blasting on adhesion of CAD/CAM resin block to dentin

The aim of this study was to evaluate the time elapsed bond strength of the CAD/CAM resin block (CRB) to bovine dentin after alumina blasting. CRB (KATANA AVENCIA BLOCK) slices were ground with #600-SiC paper and divided into three groups according to alumina blasting pressure -0.1 MPa, 0.2 MPa or untreated- and then divided into two subgroups according to the time elapsed after alumina blasting -same-day or one-week "dry-storage" at controlled laboratory conditions before cementation. The CRB slices were then cemented to bovine dentin with Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake Dental), and divided into two subgroups -light curing or chemical curing. After 24 h storage in distilled water at 37°C, the specimens were then subjected to micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) testing. One-week group showed a significant decrease in µTBS. The µTBS values showed that CRBs must be cemented with light curing immediately after alumina blasting at 0.1 or 0.2 MPa to obtain a stable adhesion.

Effect of Differences in Axial Thickness and Type of Cement on Fracture Resistance in Composite Resin CAD/CAM Crowns

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of differences in axial thickness and type of cement on fracture load in CAD/CAM crowns. Assuming the mandibular first premolar to be the abutment tooth, 4 types of crown with different axial thicknesses and radii of curvature were prepared. To unify external design, the morphology of the crown margins was set at 0.15, 0.30, 0.45, or 0.60 mm, thus maintaining uniform axial form of the crowns. The CAD/CAM crowns and abutment teeth were bonded using each of 2 types of resin cement or polycarboxylate cement. The fracture load value was measured using a universal testing machine and the destruction phase observed.No significant difference was observed with change in axial thickness. The fracture load values with each of the 2 types of resin cement used were significantly higher than that with polycarboxylate cement (p<0.01). These results suggest that the fracture load values of CAD/CAM crowns are not influenced by differences in the axial thickness of the crown, and that they are higher when bonding is achieved with resin rather than polycarboxylate cement.

Effect of light absence or attenuation on biaxial flexural strength of dual-polymerized resin cements after short- and long-term storage

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate whether biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of dual resin cements is affected by light absence or attenuation, storage time, or cements' chemical nature.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and twenty disk-shaped specimens were made from each cement (non-self-adhesive cement and self-adhesive cement) using Teflon molds on a controlled temperature surface (35°C). Specimens were polymerized as follows (N = 30): self-cured, directly light-cured, light-cured at a distance of 6 mm between the light tip and the specimen, and through a 6-mm thick composite resin barrier (indirectly light-cured). Each group was divided (N = 10) for storage purposes (15 minutes, 24 hours, and 6 months). Specimens were placed into a biaxial-flexure jig and a vertical load was applied until failure. The BFS values were subjected to generalized linear models statistical analysis and Weibull distributions (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

After 15 minutes aging, neither material achieved enough polymerization to perform the BFS test when polymerized using the self-curing mode. The self-adhesive product demonstrated much lower variation in strength with storage time than did the non-self-curing cement.

CONCLUSIONS

Attenuated/light-curing reduced BFS values only for 15-minutes storage period for both materials. Flexural strength of the self-adhesive cement was less affected by light absence/attenuation and storage time.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Biaxial flexural strength of a self-adhesive resin cement is less sensitive to variation in light application and storage time than is a non-self-adhesive cement.

The strategies used for curing universal adhesives affect the micro-bond strength of resin cement used to lute indirect resin composites to human dentin

We evaluated the effect of different curing strategies for universal adhesives on micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) between resin cement and dentin and/or between resin cement and indirect resin composite. Flat coronal dentin surfaces and composite resin disks were pretreated with silane-containing universal adhesives, with or without light-curing on the dentin-side and/or composite resin disk-side. Resin disks were luted onto the pretreated dentin surfaces with the corresponding dual-cure adhesive resin cements and light-cured, and cut into beams after 24-h water storage. After 0 or 10,000 thermocycles (5ºC/55ºC) in a water bath, the μTBS of the composite resin disk-dentin beam was tested. The μTBS was highest when universal adhesives were applied to both the dentin- and the indirect composite resin disk-side, followed by light-curing. Thermocycling decreased μTBS in all but the Scotchbond Universaltreated group, with light-curing on both sides. The effect of curing strategies is dependent upon the materials.

Antibacterial Activity of Commercial Dentine Bonding Systems against E. faecalis-Flow Cytometry Study

Literature presents inconsistent results on the antibacterial activity of dentine bonding systems (DBS). Antibacterial activity of adhesive systems depends on several factors, including composition and acidity. Flow cytometry is a novel detection method to measure multiple characteristics of a single cell: total cell number, structural (size, shape), and functional parameters (viability, cell cycle). The LIVE/DEAD^® BacLight™ bacterial viability assay was used to evaluate an antibacterial activity of DBS by assessing physical membrane disruption of bacteria mediated by DBS. Ten commercial DBSs: four total-etching (TE), four self-etching (SE) and two selective enamel etching (SEE) were tested. Both total-etching DBS ExciTE F and OptiBond Solo Plus showed comparatively low antibacterial activity against E. faecalis. The lowest activity of all tested TE systems showed Te-Econom Bond. Among SE DBS, G-ænial Bond (92.24% dead cells) followed by Clearfil S3 Bond Plus (88.02%) and Panavia F 2.0 ED Primer II (86.67%) showed the highest antibacterial activity against E. faecalis, which was comparable to isopropranol (positive control). In the present study, self-etching DBS exhibited higher antimicrobial activity than tested total-etching adhesives against E. faecalis.
