Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality distraction (VRD) on dental anxiety during scaling and root planing (SRP) in periodontitis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This randomized controlled split-mouth study included 60 patients who scored 9 or above on the dental anxiety scale (DAS) and required SRP in at least two quadrants with at least five teeth and two sites with a probing depth of ≥4 mm. Randomly chosen quadrants were treated using virtual reality glasses, and other quadrants were treated without glasses at the same visit. During VRD, a video of nature scenes was projected onto the screen in front of the patient's eyes. DAS and a visual analogue scale about patient feelings were applied at the end of the procedure. RESULTS With VRD, the scale value of pain and discomfort level (VASP) was significantly reduced (p = 0.01, d = 0.57). Starting treatment without glasses significantly decreased VASP in both control and test sides (p = 0.00, d = 0.85; p = 0.00, d = 0.80, respectively) and increased the sensation of immersion and realism (p = 0.03, d = 0.45; p = 0.02, d = 0.46, respectively). Intraoperative and postoperative DAS values were significantly lower in patients who started treatment without VRD (p = 0.04, d = 0.34; p = 0.02, d = 0.44, respectively). Of the patients, 63.3% preferred VRD in the subsequent treatment. While patient preference did not correlate with sex, it correlated with age (r = -0.48, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The VRD and initiating SRP procedure with VRD affected the pain and discomfort level in anxious periodontitis patients. In addition, the anxiety level was also affected by starting the procedure with glasses.

Abstract
Introduction The assessment of the sleep status of older adults and its relationship to oral health can help determine their well-being and quality of life. In accordance with this purpose, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between oral health and sleep quality in community-dwelling older adults in an urban area. Materials and Methods The data of this study were taken from the Kayseri Elderly Health Study. The study group was administered a questionnaire form and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. A specialist dentist examined the oral health conditions (dentures use; caries; deficient, filled, natural teeth numbers; periodontal health) using the Community Periodontal Index and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14-TR). Results One hundred forty (38.1%) of the study group were female, and 227 (61.9%) were male. When evaluated in terms of oral hygiene, there was a statistically significant difference between those with good sleep quality and poor sleep quality in terms of mechanical interventions such as using toothpaste and an inter-dental brush, and also, OHIP-14-TR was significant. In the binary logistic regression analysis, OHIP-14-TR was found to be a significant risk factor, reflecting only the subjective interpretation of the older adults in terms of oral health-related quality of life (odds ratio: 1.069, 95.0% confidence interval: 1.043-1.096). Conclusion This is the first epidemiologic study to examine the relationship between oral health status and sleep quality, in which many oral health indicators are evaluated together in Turkish community-dwelling older adults. OHIP-14-TR may be a useful tool to employ in sleep disorder clinics for older people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine whether dental anxiety (DA) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) differ between persons with and those without chronic periodontitis. METHODS One-hundred patients with chronic periodontitis and 50 age- and- sex-matched controls were included. Data were collected on the following: demographics; smoking habits; Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for dental pain assessment; Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS); Oral Health Impact Profile 14 (OHIP-14); Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index; Plaque Index (PI); probing depth (PD); bleeding on probing (BOP); and radiographic bone loss. RESULTS Patients with chronic periodontitis exhibited a significantly higher percentage of high anxiety and phobia compared with subjects in the control group. Furthermore, patients with chronic periodontitis were statistically significantly more likely to consider themselves as suffering from dental anxiety (68.7% vs. 14.3%, P < 0.001) as well as more likely to have fear of receiving dental injections, hearing the dental drill noise and feeling a foreign object in the mouth. Patients with chronic periodontitis exhibited worse OHIP-14 global scores as well as worse scores in the following individual domains: functional limitation (P = 0.005); physical disability (P = 0.003); psychological disability (P = 0.010); social disability (P = 0.011); and handicap (P = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS Compared with controls, patients with chronic periodontitis had higher levels of dental anxiety and worse OHRQoL. It is important to consider dental anxiety and OHRQoL assessment as an integral component of the evaluation of patients with chronic periodontitis. Communication between dental and behavioral health professionals is needed to implement a multidisciplinary team approach involving behavioural and psychological interventions.

Abstract
Background: An appropriate scale to assess the dental anxiety of Hindi speaking population is lacking. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of Hindi version of one of the oldest dental anxiety scale, Corah’s Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS) in Hindi speaking Indian adults. Methods: A total of 348 subjects from the outpatient department of a dental hospital in India participated in this cross-sectional study. The scale was cross-culturally adapted by forward and backward translation, committee review and pretesting method. The construct validity of the translated scale was explored with exploratory factor analysis. The correlation of the Hindi version of CDAS with visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to measure the convergent validity. Reliability was assessed through calculations of Cronbach’s alpha and intra class correlation 48 forms were completed for test-retest. Results: Prevalence of dental anxiety in the sample within the age range of 18-80 years was 85.63% [95% CI: 0.815-0.891]. The response rate was 100 %. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test value was 0.776. After factor analysis, a single factor (dental anxiety) was obtained with 4 items.The single factor model explained 61% variance. Pearson correlation coefficient between CDASand VAS was 0.494. Test-retest showed the Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.814. The test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient of the total CDAS score was 0.881 [95% CI: 0.318-0.554]. Conclusion: Hindi version of CDAS is a valid and reliable scale to assess dental anxiety in Hindi speaking population. Convergent validity is well recognized but discriminant validity is limited and requires further study.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the properties of the Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) when applied to Brazilian adults and to test its invariance across independent samples and different sociodemographic groups. Sociodemographic data, reports on previous unpleasant dental experiences and DAS responses were collected through telephone interviews. Metric properties of the one and two-factor models were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. The analysis included the chi-square ratio divided by degrees of freedom (χ2/df), the comparative fit index (CFI), the goodness of fit index (GFI) and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). Convergent validity was evaluated using the average variance extracted (AVE). Cronbach's alpha (α) and composite reliability (CR) were calculated. In the two-factor model, discriminant validity was evaluated. The invariance of the models was evaluated using a multigroup analysis of the independent samples (pΔχ2λ, pΔχ2 i and pΔχ2 Res ≥ 0.05). Telephone interviews were held with 350 individuals (74.3% women). Of the participants, 135 (38.6%) had previous unpleasant dental experiences, and 117 (33.4%) knew someone who had had this type of experience. The one- and two-factor model (χ2/df < 2.0; CFI,GFI > 0.90; RMSEA < 0.10; AVE > 0.50; α,CR > 0.70) were adjusted to the data. Discriminant validity was limited (ρ2 = 0.66). Both models presented strong invariance across independent samples, but the invariance was weak (pΔχ2i < 0.05) when samples were defined by socioeconomic variables. In conclusion, both DAS models were valid and reliable when applied to a sample of Brazilian adults. However, the weak invariance of the models suggests that sample characteristics interfered with the measurement of dental anxiety.

Abstract
Anxiety is adaptive and plays an important role in keeping us safe. However, when anxiety becomes too extreme, it can cause significant disruptions and distress. Understanding the mechanisms underlying excessive anxiety and how to best treat it is a priority for researchers and clinicians. There is increasing recognition that disruptions in the amount and timing of sleep are associated with anxiety symptoms and characteristics. In the current paper, we explore the intersections between sleep, circadian rhythms, and anxiety. First, we review accumulating evidence that anxiety is associated with disruptions in sleep and circadian rhythms in both clinical and nonclinical samples and across ages. Next, we discuss the data linking sleep disruptions with anxiety-related traits (anxiety sensitivity, neuroticism, and perfectionism) and patterns of cognition and emotion. Finally, potential treatment implications are highlighted. Overall, these data suggest that delineating the role of disruptions in the amount and timing of sleep holds promise for improving the lives of individuals with heightened anxiety.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality has been demonstrated to diminish cognitive performance, impair psychosocial functioning and alter the perception of stress. At present, however, there is little understanding of how sleep quality affects emotion processing. The aim of the present study was to determine the extent to which sleep quality, measured through the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, influences affective symptoms as well as the interaction between stress and performance on an emotional memory test and sustained attention task. To that end, 154 undergraduate students (mean age: 21.27 years, standard deviation = 4.03) completed a series of measures, including the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, the Sustained Attention to Response Task, an emotion picture recognition task and affective symptom questionnaires following either a control or physical stress manipulation, the cold pressor test. As sleep quality and psychosocial functioning differ among chronotypes, we also included chronotype and time of day as variables of interest to ensure that the effects of sleep quality on the emotional and non-emotional tasks were not attributed to these related factors. We found that poor sleep quality is related to greater depressive symptoms, anxiety and mood disturbances. While an overall relationship between global Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index score and emotion and attention measures was not supported, poor sleep quality, as an independent component, was associated with better memory for negative stimuli and a deficit in sustained attention to non-emotional stimuli. Importantly, these effects were not sensitive to stress, chronotype or time of day. Combined, these results suggest that individuals with poor sleep quality show an increase in affective symptomatology as well as a negative cognitive bias with a concomitant decrease in sustained attention to non-emotional stimuli.
