Enhanced photocatalytic activities of Nd-doped TiO2 under visible light using a facile sol-gel method

Bottom-Up Construction of Mesoporous Cerium-Doped Titania with Stably Dispersed Pt Nanocluster for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Hydrogen generation is one of the crucial technologies to realize sustainable energy development, and the design of advanced catalysts with efficient interfacial sites and fast mass transfer is significant for hydrogen evolution. Herein, an in situ coassembly strategy was proposed to engineer a cerium-doped ordered mesoporous titanium oxide (mpCe/TiO2), of which the abundant oxygen vacancies (Ov) and highly exposed active pore walls contribute to good stability of ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters (NCs, ∼ 1.0 nm in diameter) anchored in the uniform mesopores (ca. 20 nm). Consequently, the tailored mpCe/TiO2 with 0.5 mol % Ce-doping-supported Pt NCs (Pt-mpCe/TiO2-0.5) exhibits superior H2 evolution performance toward the water-gas shift reaction with a 0.73 molH2·s-1·molPt-1 H2 evolution rate at 200 °C, which is almost 6-fold higher than the Pt-mpTiO2 (0.13 molH2·s-1·molPt-1 H2). Density functional theory calculations confirm that the structure of Ce-doped TiO2 with Ce coordinated to six O atoms by substituting Ti atoms is thermodynamically favorable without the deformation of Ti-O bonds. The Ov generated by the six O atom-coordinated Ce doping is highly active for H2O dissociation with an energy barrier of 2.18 eV, which is obviously lower than the 2.37 eV for the control TiO2. In comparison with TiO2, the resultant Ce/TiO2 support acts as a superior electron acceptor for Pt NCs and causes electron deficiency at the Pt/support interface with a 0.17 eV downshift of the Pt d-band center, showing extremely obvious electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). As a result, abundant and hyperactive Ti3+-Ov(-Ce3+)-Ptδ+ interfacial sites are formed to significantly promote the generation of CO2 and H2 evolution. In addition, the stronger EMSI between Pt NCs and mpCe/TiO2-0.5 than that between Pt and mpTiO2 contributes to the superior self-enhanced catalytic performance during the cyclic test, where the CO conversion at 200 °C increases from 72% for the fresh catalyst to 99% for the used one. These findings reveal the subtle relationship between the mesoporous metal oxide-metal composite catalysts with unique chemical microenvironments and their catalytic performance, which is expected to inspire the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Synthesis of Ce and Sm Co-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Rhodamine B Dye Degradation

One of the major concerns that receive global attention is the presence of organic pollutants (dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, phenolic compounds, heavy metals, and so on), originating from various industries, in wastewater and water resources. Rhodamine B is widely used in the dyeing of paints, plastics, textiles, and other fabrics, as well as biological products. It is highly persistent, toxic, and carcinogenic to organisms and humans when directly released into the water supply. To avoid this hazard, several studies have been conducted in an attempt to remove Rhodamine B from wastewater. Metal oxide semiconducting materials have gained great interest because of their ability to decompose organic pollutants from wastewater. TiO2 is one of the most effective photocatalysts with a broad range of applications. Several attempts have been made to improve its photocatalytic activity. Accordingly, we have prepared in this work a series of cerium (Ce) and samarium (Sm) co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, and 2.00%) using a sol–gel auto-combustion approach. The influence of Ce–Sm concentrations on the structural, morphology, electronic, and optical properties, as well as the photocatalytic activity, was investigated. Structure and elemental mapping analyses proved the presence of Ce and Sm in the compositions as well as the development of the TiO2 anatase phase with a tetragonal structure and crystallite size of 15.1–17.8 nm. Morphological observations confirmed the creation of spherical nanoparticles (NPs). The examination of the electronic structure properties using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and of the optical properties using a UV/Vis diffuse spectrophotometer showed a reduction in the bandgap energy upon Ce–Sm co-doping. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized products was assessed on the degradation of Rhodamine B dye, and it was found that all Ce–Sm co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles have better photocatalytic activities than pristine TiO2 nanoparticles. Among all of the prepared nanoparticles, the sample with x = 0.50% demonstrated the best photocatalytic activity, with a degradation efficiency of 98% within 30 min and a reaction rate constant of about 0.0616 min−1. h+ and •O2− were determined to be the most important active species in the photocatalytic degradation process. Besides the high photocatalytic degradation efficiency, these photocatalysts are highly stable and could be easily recovered and reused, which indicates their potential for practical applications in the future.

Study of Structural and Optical Properties of Titanate Nanotubes with Erbium under Heat Treatment in Different Atmospheres

Titanate nanotubes were synthesized and subjected to an ion exchange reaction with erbium salt aqueous solution to obtain titanate nanotubes exchanged with erbium (3+) ions. In order to evaluate the effects of the thermal treatment atmosphere on the structural and optical properties of erbium titanate nanotubes, we subjected them to heat treatment in air and argon atmospheres. For comparison, titanate nanotubes were also treated in the same conditions. A complete structural and optical characterizations of the samples was performed. The characterizations evidenced the preservation of the morphology with the presence of phases of erbium oxides decorating the surface of the nanotubes. Variations in the dimensions of the samples (diameter and interlamellar space) were promoted by the replacement of Na⁺ by Er³⁺ and the thermal treatment in different atmospheres. In addition, the optical properties were investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results revealed that the band gap of the samples depends on the variation of diameter and sodium content caused by ion exchange and thermal treatment. Furthermore, the luminescence strongly depended on vacancies, evidenced mainly by the calcined erbium titanate nanotubes in argon atmosphere. The presence of these vacancies was confirmed by the determination of Urbach energy. The results suggest the use of thermal treated erbium titanate nanotubes in argon atmosphere in optoelectronics and photonics applications, such as photoluminescent devices, displays, and lasers.

Leachate decontamination through biological processes coupled to advanced oxidation: A review

The landfill leachate is considered a toxic effluent composed of recalcitrant contaminants that requires innovative alternatives for its decontamination. Coupling between advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and aerobic biological treatments are highlighted in this research. Therefore, a bibliographic review of the research made from 2010 to 2021 was developed. These combined alternatives were applied in leachates, and it is oriented toward the analysis of knowledge gaps, trends, and future proposals of the treatment combined that contribute to researchers who wish to work on the subject. These kinds of treatments were chosen due to a bibliometric analysis made. Also, the information was searched in several scientific database. This work was found to be unpublished, as no reviews were found so far that agglomerate studies of coupling between photocatalytic and aerobic biological processes to treat leachates. Besides, AOPs are ideal for treating wastewater of complex composition, however, when it is used as the only treatment, they are usually unprofitable, which justifies their coupling with biological treatments. Subsequently, it was determined that the knowledge main gap is the lack of documentation of treatment costs, which makes it difficult to implement on a real scale. In addition to this, the couplings trends are toward doping with metallic and nonmetallic ions of the catalyst used in the photocatalytic process to improve the efficiency of these. Finally, future research should work on finding alternatives that allow the optimization of the resources used in the combined systems and on promoting the recovery of existing products in the leachate.Implications: Leachates generate several environmental impacts due to their toxic composition. Even when coupling between heterogeneous photocatalysis and biologic treatment can solve them, issues like cost analysis and the scaling-up factor have not been developed, and futures researchers should work on that. Besides, the trend founded in almost all investigations was the catalyst doping with metals and nonmetals ions, particularly when they use TiO2 because it gives the possibility of improving efficiencies just with a structural variation. Finally, these treatment combinations require more analyses and comparison of their remotion over emerging pollutants and their performance with new designs.

Preparation and modification methods of defective titanium dioxide-based nanoparticles for photocatalytic wastewater treatment-a comprehensive review

The rapid population growth and industrial expansion worldwide have created serious water contamination concerns. To curb the pollution issue, it has become imperative to use a versatile material for the treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been recognized as the most-studied nanoparticle in various fields of science and engineering due to its availability, low cost, efficiency, and other fascinating properties with a wide range of applications in modern technology. Recent studies revealed the photocatalytic activity of the material for the treatment of industrial effluents to promote environmental sustainability. With the wide band gap energy of 3.2 eV, TiO₂ can be activated under UV light; thus, many strategies have been proposed to extend its photoabsorption to the visible light region. In what follows, this has generated increasing attention to study its characteristics and structural modifications in different forms for photocatalytic applications. The present review provides an insight into the understanding of the synthesis methods of TiO₂, the current progress in the treatment techniques for the degradation of wide environmental pollutants employing modified TiO₂ nanoparticles, and the factors affecting its photocatalytic activities. Further, recent developments in using titania for practical applications, the approach for designing novel nanomaterials, and the prospects and opportunities in this exciting area have been discussed.

Novel Nd-N/TiO2 Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic and Antioxidant Applications Using Hydrothermal Approach

In this study, photocatalysis was employed to degrade a wastewater pollutant (AB-29 dye) under visible light irradiation. For this purpose, nitrogen (N)- and neodymium (Nd)-doped TiO₂ nanoparticles were prepared using the simple hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed an anatase phase structure of the Nd-N/TiO₂ photocatalyst, whereas properties including the surface morphology, chemical states/electronics structure and optical structure were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-visible (UV-vis.) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. Photocatalytic testing of the prepared nanomaterials was performed to remove acid blue-29 (AB-29) dye under visible-light exposure. The prepared Nd-N/TiO₂ nanoparticles demonstrated a superior photocatalytic activity and the decolorization efficiency was about 92% after visible-light illumination for 1 h and 20 min, while N/TiO₂, Nd/TiO₂ and TiO₂ only showed a 67%, 43% and 31% decolorization efficiency, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Nd-N/TiO₂ photocatalyst was due to a decrease in the electron/hole's recombination and the increased absorption of TiO₂ in the visible range. The reusability results showed that the average photocatalytic activity decrease for all the samples was only about 16% after five consecutive cycles, indicating a good stability of the prepared nanomaterials. Moreover, the radical scavenging activity of the prepared nanomaterials was evaluated using the DPPH method. The novel Nd-N/TiO₂ exhibited a higher antioxidant activity compared to all the other samples.

Effect of Ce-Doping on Microstructure and Adsorption- Photodegradation Behaviors of the Hydrothermally-Synthesized TiO2 Nanotubes

Ce-doped TiO2 nanotubes (Ce-TNTs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method to obtain high-efficiency adsorption and photodegradation abilities for methylene blue (MB) dye. The transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffractimeter (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and photodegradation tests were used to characterize the morphology, microstructure, ionic valance, and degradation behaviors of the TNTs. Results show that the Ce-doped TNTs are composed of anatase tubulars with an inner-hole diameter of 5 nm, outer diameter of 10–15 nm, length of several hundred nanometers, and a small amount of CeO2 nanoparticles. Ce3+ and Ce4+are dissolved in the anatase crystals, the ratio of which increases with an increase in Ce addition. Ce-doping yields a higher amount of surface oxygen, which results in a strong physical and chemical adsorption to the cationoid MB. 2.5 mol% Ce-doping produces the largest specific surface area, porosity, and photoabsorption threshold and the lowest Zeta potential, yielding the highest adsorption efficiency and photocatalytic ability even under sunlight irradiation.

Synthesizing and Optimizing Rutile TiO2 Nanoparticles for Magnetically Guided Drug Delivery

Introduction

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) have shown tremendous potential in targeted drug-delivery applications. Among various mechanisms, magnetically guided transport of drugs is one such technique for the said purpose. TiO₂ NPs being diamagnetic or sometimes exhibiting very weak ferromagnetism can be modified by treating them with suitable magnetic materials.

Methods

Rutile TiO₂ NPs were synthesized and doped with Iron Supplement FericipXT and rare-earth metals like cerium, erbium and neodymium via sol–gel technique. FericipXT-coated rutile TiO₂ NPs were synthesized in three different core-shell ratios (1:3, 1:1 and 3:1). The resulting samples were characterized via X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM).

Results

XRD of FericipXT-doped TiO₂ NPs showed a rutile phase for 1% and 3% doping; however, only a small fraction of the maghemite phase was obtained for 5% doping. The XRD plots of Ce-doped, Er-doped and Nd-doped TiO₂ NPs showed a variety of phases of TiO₂ NPs (such as anatase/rutile/mixed) along with the oxide phases of the corresponding rare-earth metal. The presence of various iron titanium oxides and iron oxides was found in core-shell NPs. HR-TEM images confirmed the formation of 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1 core-shell TiO₂ NPs. VSM studies showed that the resulting NPs depicted magnetism in the form of superparamagnetism, ferromagnetism and even paramagnetism.

Discussion

The doping to 3% does not affect the original phase of the resulting TiO₂ NPs as depicted from the XRD; however, a doping of 5% and more resulted in extra phases corresponding to the dopant added. FericipXT was loaded over TiO₂ NPs in amorphous form. Among all the samples synthesized, FericipXT-coated TiO₂ NPs demonstrated the best magnetic ability. It was deduced that coating with a magnetic material drastically improves the magnetic character of the host NPs.

Fabrication of Ce doped TiO2 for efficient organic pollutants removal from wastewater

Pristine and Ce doped TiO₂ nanoparticles were fabricated for toxic pollutants removal from wastewater. Pristine, 2% Ce and 4% Ce doped TiO₂ photocatalysts were produced via hydrothermal route. 4% Ce doped TiO₂ exhibited 2.41 eV bandgap which is smaller than pure TiO_2. The morphology was also investigated and it was established that doping of Ce ions enhanced the surface roughness and reduced the particle size. The surface area was characterized through BET analysis and 4% Ce-TiO₂ possess higher surface with large pore diameter which helped the photocatalytic activity. The prepared photocatalysts were investigated on reduction of pollutants from wastewater under visible light. Higher efficiency was obtained for 4% Ce-TiO₂ photocatalyst for both model pollutants. The "k" value possessed was also higher for the doped TiO₂ catalyst. These analysis reports the optimum level of ceria doping to enhance morphology, surface area and it increased activity than bare TiO₂. 4% Ce-TiO₂ will be the potential candidate for efficient wastewater management. The 4% Ce doped TiO₂ photocatalyst provided 77% and 88% on reducing MB and RhB dyes. The dopant has developed higher surface area, morphology and good recombination rate which reduced the toxic pollutants and changed the wastewater to reuse.

Engineering the photocatalytic efficiency of nanoscale TiO2 anatase with doped (Nd/Y) and co-doped (Nd–Y/Nd–Sm) lanthanides to decompose the azo dye orange G under UV-VIS irradiation

Nd/Y–TiO2 anatase nanopowders displayed the highest degradation of 96.34% in 105 minutes only.

Impact of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Modification on Its Application to Pollution Treatment—A Review

A high-efficiency method to deal with pollutants must be found because environmental problems are becoming more serious. Photocatalytic oxidation technology as the environmentally-friendly treatment method can completely oxidate organic pollutants into pollution-free small-molecule inorganic substances without causing secondary pollution. As a widely used photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2) can greatly improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants, but several problems are noted in its practical application. TiO2 modified by different materials has received extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis because of its excellent physical and chemical properties compared with pure TiO2. In this review, we discuss the use of different materials for TiO2 modification, highlighting recent developments in the synthesis and application of TiO2 composites using different materials. Materials discussed in the article can be divided into nonmetallic and metallic. Mechanisms of how to improve catalytic performance of TiO2 after modification are discussed, and the future development of modified TiO2 is prospected.
