Recent progress in the synthesis of lanthanide-based persistent luminescence nanoparticles

Enabling Visible-Light-Charged Near-Infrared Persistent Luminescence in Organics by Intermolecular Charge Transfer

Visible light is a universal and user-friendly excitation source; however, its use to generate persistent luminescence (PersL) in materials remains a huge challenge. Herein, the concept of intermolecular charge transfer (xCT) is applied in typical host-guest molecular systems, which allows for a much lower energy requirement for charge separation, thus enabling efficient charging of near-infrared (NIR) PersL in organics by visible light (425-700 nm). Importantly, NIR PersL in organics occurs via the trapping of electrons from charge-transfer aggregates (CTAs) into constructed trap states with trap depths of 0.63-1.17 eV, followed by the detrapping of these electrons by thermal stimulation, resulting in a unique light-storage effect and long-lasting emission up to 4.6 h at room temperature. The xCT absorption range is modulated by changing the electron-donating ability of a series of acenaphtho[1,2-b]pyrazine-8,9-dicarbonitrile-based CTAs, and the organic PersL is tuned from 681 to 722 nm. This study on xCT interaction-induced NIR PersL in organic materials provides a major step forward in understanding the underlying luminescence mechanism of organic semiconductors and these findings are expected to promote their applications in optoelectronics, energy storage, and medical diagnosis.

Current Developments in Emerging Lanthanide-Doped Persistent Luminescent Scintillators and Their Applications

Lanthanide-doped scintillators have the ability to convert the absorbed X-ray irradiation into ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis), or near-infrared (NIR) light. Lanthanide-doped scintillators with excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) are emerging as a new class of PersL materials recently. They have attracted great attention due to their unique "self-luminescence" characteristic and potential applications. In this review, we comb through and focus on current developments of lanthanide-doped persistent luminescent scintillators (PersLSs), including their PersL mechanism, synthetic methods, tuning of PersL properties (e. g. emission wavelength, intensity, and duration time), as well as their promising applications (e. g. information storage, encryption, anti-counterfeiting, bio-imaging, and photodynamic therapy). We hope this review will provide valuable guidance for the future development of PersLSs.

Immobilization of rare-earth doped aluminate nanoparticles encapsulated with silica into polylactic acid-based color-tunable smart plastic window

An inorganic/organic nanocomposite was used to develop an afterglow and color-tunable smart window. A combination of polylactic acid (PLA) plastic waste as an environmentally-friendly hosting agent, and lanthanide-activated strontium aluminum oxide nanoparticles (SAON) encapsulated with silica nanoparticles (SAON@Silica) as a photoluminescent efficient agent resulted in a smart organic/inorganic nanocomposite. In order to prepare SAON-encapsulated silica nanoparticles (SAON@Silica), the SAON nanoparticles were coated with silica using the heterogeneous precipitation method. By using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SAON showed a diameter range of 5-12 nm, while the SAON@Silica nanoparticles showed a diameter range of 50-100 nm. In order to ensure the development of a colorless plastic film, a homogeneous dispersion of the phosphorescent Phosphor@Silica nanoparticles throughout the plastic bulk was confirmed. CIE Lab coordinates and luminescence spectra were used to study the color shift characteristics. Under visible light conditions, the plastic films were transparent. The photoluminescent films emitted green light at 525 nm when excited at 375 nm. The hydrophobicity and ultraviolet protection were enhanced without altering the fundamental physico-mechanical performance of the plastic sheet. The current color-tunable plastic can be used in many potential applications, such as warning signs, anti-counterfeiting barcodes, smart windows, and protective apparel.

Recent Advances in NIR or X-ray Excited Persistent Luminescent Materials for Deep Bioimaging

Due to their persistent luminescence, persistent luminescent (PersL) materials have attracted great interest. In the biomedical field, the use of persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) eliminates the need for continuous in situ excitation, thereby avoiding interference from tissue autofluorescence and significantly improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Although persistent luminescence materials can emit light continuously, the luminescence intensity of small-sized nanoparticles in vivo decays quickly. Early persistent luminescent nanoparticles were mostly excited by ultraviolet (UV) or visible light and were administered for imaging purposes through ex vivo charging followed by injection into the body. Limited by the low in vivo penetration depth, UV light cannot secondary charge PLNPs that have decayed in vivo, and visible light does not penetrate deep enough to reach deep tissues, which greatly limits the imaging time of persistent luminescent materials. In order to address this issue, the development of PLNPs that can be activated by light sources with superior tissue penetration capabilities is essential. Near-infrared (NIR) light and X-rays are widely recognized as ideal excitation sources, making persistent luminescent materials stimulated by these two sources a prominent area of research in recent years. This review describes NIR and X-ray excitable persistent luminescence materials and their recent advances in bioimaging.

High-Efficiency and Stable Long-Persistent Luminescence from Undoped Cesium Cadmium Chlorine Crystals Induced by Intrinsic Point Defects

Application of long-persistent luminescence (LPL) materials in many technological fields is in the spotlight. However, the exploration of undoped persistent luminescent materials with high emission efficiency, robust stability, and long persistent duration remains challenging. Here, inorganic cesium cadmium chlorine (CsCdCl₃ ) is developed, featuring remarkable LPL characteristics at room temperature, which is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Excited by ultraviolet light, the CsCdCl₃ crystals exhibit an intense yellow emission with a large photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈90%. Different from the reported systems with lanthanides or transition metals doping, the CsCdCl₃ crystals without dopants perform yellow LPL with a long duration of 6000 s. Joint experiment-theory characterizations reveal the intrinsic point defects of CsCdCl₃ act as the trap centers of excited electrons and the carrier de-trapping process from such trap sites to localized emission centers contributes to the LPL. Encouraged by the attractive fluorescence and persistent luminescence as well as good stability of CsCdCl₃ against environment oxygen/moisture (75%), heat (100 °C for 10 h), and ultraviolet light irradiation, an effective dual-mode information storage-reading application is demonstrated. The results open up a new frontier for exploring LPL materials without dopants and provide an opportunity for advanced information storage compatible for practical applications.

Efficient blue TADF-type organic afterglow material via boric acid-assisted confinement

A heat treatment method is developed to produce blue afterglow materials, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield of 65% and an emission lifetime of 0.18 s (afterglow: >2 s). The afterglow is attributed to TADF of norfloxacin, activated by the confinement effect of boric acid.

Green Synthesis of FexOy Nanoparticles with Potential Antioxidant Properties

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe_xO_y-NPs) are currently being applied in numerous high-tech sectors, such as in chemical sectors for catalysis and in the medical sector for drug delivery systems and antimicrobial purposes, due to their specific, unique and magnetic properties. Nevertheless, their synthesis is under continuous investigation, as physicochemical methods are considered expensive and require toxic solvents. Thus, green nanotechnology has shown considerable promise in the eco-biogenesis of nanoparticles. In the current study, Fe_xO_y-NPs were synthesized by two different methods: via green synthesis through the use of polyphenols, which were extracted from Phoenix dactylifera L.; and via chemical synthesis, in which the reducing agent was a chemical (NaOH), and iron chloride was used as a precursor. Thus, polyphenol extraction and its ability to produce nanoparticles were evaluated based on the drying temperature used during the Phoenix dactylifera L. recollection, as well as the extraction solvent used. The results highlight the potential of polyphenols present in Phoenix dactylifera L. for the sustainable manufacture of Fe_xO_y-NPs. Finally, green and chemical syntheses were compared on the basis of physicochemical characteristics and functional properties.
