Mapping Knowledge Landscapes and Emerging Trends of the Links Between Frailty and Heart Failure: A Bibliometric Analysis From 2000 to 2023

Background Frailty, within the context of heart failure (HF), is strongly linked to poor patient outcomes. Investigating the vulnerable condition of individuals with HF is crucial, not only for medical reasons but also as a significant public health challenge, especially among the elderly population where both HF and frailty are common. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize HF patients with frailty over those without such symptoms. To begin, promptly assessing the impact of academic research in this area is crucial, considering factors such as geographical regions, authors, journals, and institutions. Additionally, it is important to explore current topics and identify potential areas that could inspire future researchers to conduct further studies to advance public health. Methodology We conducted a search in the Web of Science Core Collection database to identify articles and reviews in the English language focusing on frailty and HF which were published from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2023. To perform bibliometric analysis, VOSviewer (v.1.6.18) and CiteSpace (v.6.1.R2) were utilized. Results A total of 1,381 original English-language articles were gathered, comprising 1,162 articles and 219 reviews. The quantity of research publications in this area has experienced significant growth since 2013. Among all countries, the United States has contributed the largest number of publications, accounting for 409 articles (29.62% of the total). Additionally, the United States has received the highest number of citations, being cited a total of 13,329 times, as well as boasting the greatest total link strength. Duke University stands out as the institution with the highest number of research papers, having published 40 articles (2.90% of the total). It has also received the most citations, with a total of 2,455 times, and possesses the highest total link strength, which amounts to 212. Within the realm of prolific authors, Kentaro Kamiya from Kitasato University emerges as the most productive, having authored 28 articles (2.03% of the total). When considering scholarly journals, "Esc Heart Failure" contains the highest number of articles pertaining to frailty and HF, publishing a noteworthy 36 articles (2.61% of the total). Noteworthy keywords within this field encompass frailty, heart failure, elderly, mortality, and cardiovascular disease. Over the past five years, the most popular keywords have centered around "frailty syndrome," "sarcopenia," and "therapeutic interventions." Conclusions Research on frailty and HF at a global scale has experienced substantial growth between 2000 and 2023, demonstrating a prospective field for further exploration with potential advantages from ongoing progress. Prospective studies could prioritize the enhancement of cardiac rehabilitation for patients coping with HF and frailty while ensuring the preservation of their overall quality of life.

Analysis of research trends (2014-2023) on oxidative stress and male fertility based on bibliometrics and knowledge graphs

Background

Oxidative stress (OS) is considered one of the major factors affecting male fertility, and research in this field has seen constant growth year by year. Currently, around 700 relevant papers are published each year, with a trend of further growth. Therefore, this study systematically summarizes the literature published in the last decade from a bibliometric perspective, revealing the dynamic development of the field, identifying research hotspots, analyzing future trends, and providing reference for further research.

Methods

Relevant literature on oxidative stress and male fertility was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database, covering the timespan from 2014 to 2023 and including two types, articles and reviews. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric analysis, including cluster analysis, co-occurrence analysis, co-citation analysis, and burst analysis of countries/regions, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords.

Results

This paper studied a total of 5,301 papers involving 107 countries/regions, with China having the highest number of publications (898 papers) and the United States having the highest centrality (0.62). Burst analysis of journal citations revealed the emergence of many new journals (e.g., Antioxidants-Basel, Front Endocrinol) after 2021, indicating continuous expansion and development in this field. Cluster analysis of co-cited references and co-occurring keywords divided the research into areas such as oxidative stress and male infertility, oxidative stress level detection, and antioxidants. The keywords associated with research hotspots shifted from oxidative stress detection, sperm DNA damage, apoptosis, and redox potential to DNA methylation, embryonic development, infection, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and antioxidants.

Conclusion

Bibliometric methods provide an intuitive reflection of the development process in the field of oxidative stress and male fertility, as well as the analysis of research hotspots in different periods. Research on oxidative stress and embryonic development, as well as antioxidant health management, may become hotspots in future research.

Characteristics and trends in acceptance and commitment therapy research: A bibliometric analysis

PURPOSE

As acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) becomes mainstream and a growing body of literature emerges, it is critical to map the global collaborative network and a quantitative and systematic assessment of ACT, as research on this topic is still lacking. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the trajectory, key themes, and future prospects in ACT research.

METHODS

Publications were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection before 2022. Excel 2019, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace software were used to analyze the characteristics and trends of ACT research. Examples include publications trend analysis, authors' cooperation network analysis, keywords co-occurrence analysis, and citation burst analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 799 articles in 314 journals contributed by 2,862 authors from 958 institutions in 52 countries were identified. The number of publications has increased significantly since 2015. The United States/Utah State University is the most productive country/institution; Karolinska Institute, Utah State University, and King's College of London are the most significant nodes. Twohig M.P., Hayes S.C., and Levin M.E. are the most influential authors. Keyword co-occurrence analysis found the curative mechanisms, using network technology or mobile technology as adjuvant therapy, reducing psychological diseases of cancer patients were potential trends.

CONCLUSION

This review is the first attempt of its kind to systematically examine the knowledge structure and draw an evidence map of ACT research. It deepens the understanding of existing research, gives many operable research directions and suggests to future ACT research.

Mapping theme trends and knowledge structure of Sjögren's syndrome (SS), a bibliometric analysis from 2010 to 2021

BACKGROUND

Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease with a complicated pathophysiology, and treatment strategies are in desperate need of improvement. In this research, we provide the literature topic trends and knowledge structure connected to Sjögren's syndrome from the perspective of bibliometrics for further research.

METHODS

We acquired 3753 publications from the PubMed database and 3880 catalogs from the Web of Science Core Collection, with a time limit of 2010 to 2021 and the search term as "Sjögren's syndrome." Using the VOSviewer and bibliographic item co-occurrence matrix generator, we conducted cocited analysis, extracted major MeSH terms, generated matrices and performed biclustering analysis, visual matrix, drawn strategy diagram, and social network analysis.

RESULTS

Through the clustering of the major MeSH terms, a total of five categories and 10 research topics were identified. Cocitation analysis suggests that diagnosis and clinical manifestations have been the main basis over the past 12 years and also are the mature content in the first quadrant of the strategy map. Ultrasonography, immunosuppressive agents and therapy, mechanism and therapeutic targets, and diagnostic autoantibodies are examples of the third quadrant, which wields great potential to progress. Genetic predisposition and psychology, in the fourth quadrant, need to be developed additionally. The subject keywords near the network's edge, such as "Salivary Glands, Minor/pathology," "Immunosuppressive Agents/therapeutic use," and "Autoantibodies/blood," are all growing research hotspots with much space, according to social network analysis.

CONCLUSION

Through bibliometric analysis of the literature related to Sjögren's syndrome in the past 12 years, we obtained the knowledge basis, undeveloped topics, and emerging hotspots, which can suggest recommendations for future research. Key Points • We disclosed the topic trends and knowledge structure of Sjögren's syndrome literature over the past 12 years. • Clinical manifestations and diagnosis of Sjögren syndrome are included in mature and comprehensive studies, whereas ultrasonography, immunosuppressants and treatments, mechanisms and therapeutic targets, and diagnostic autoantibodies are studies with high potential for advancement. Additional research in genetics and psychology is needed. • We identified potential future research hotspots, including "Salivary Glands, Minor/pathology," "Immunosuppressive Agents/therapeutic use," and "Autoantibodies/blood."
