Abstract
BACKGROUND Perillyl alcohol (POH) is a aroma monoterpene commonly obtained from various plants' essential oil. Recently, increasing researches have demonstrated that POH may be useful, not only as flavor compound, but also as bioactive molecule because of a variety of biological activities. PURPOSE The aim of this review is to summarize the production, pharmacological activities and molecular mechanism, active derivatives, toxicity and parmacokinetics, and industrial application of POH. METHODS A systematic search of published articles up to January 2024 in Web of Science, China Knowledge Network, and PubMed databases is conducted using the following keywords: POH, POH derivatives, biological or pharmacological, production or synthesis, pharmacokinetics, toxicity and application. RESULTS Biotechnological production is considered to be a potential alternative approach to generate POH. POH provides diverse pharmacological benefits, including anticancer, antimicrobial, insecticidal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, vasorelaxant, antinociceptive, antiasthmatic, hepatoprotective effects, etc. The underlying mechanisms of action include modulation of NF-κB, JNK/c-Jun, Notch, Akt/mTOR, PI3K/Akt/eNOS, STAT3, Nrf2 and ERS response pathways, mitigation of mitochondrial dysfunction and membrane integrity damage, and inhibition of ROS accumulation, pro-inflammatory cytokines release and NLRP3 activation. What's more, the proteins or genes influenced by POH against diseases refer to Bax, Bcl-2, cyclin D1, CDK, p21, p53, HIF-1α, AP-1, caspase-3, M6P/IGF2R, PARP, VEGF, etc. Some clinical studies report that intranasal delivery of POH is a safe and effective treatment for cancer, but further clinical investigations are needed to confirm other health benefits of POH in human healthy. Depending on these health-promoting properties together with desirable flavor and safety, POH can be employed as dietary supplement, preservative and flavor additive in food and cosmetic fields, as building block in synthesis fields, as anticancer drug in medicinal fields, and as pesticides and herbicides in agricultural fields. CONCLUSION This review systematically summarizes the recent advances in POH and highlights its therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms as well as the clinical settings, which is helpful to develop POH into functional food and new candidate drug for prevention and management of diseases. Future studies are needed to conduct more biological activity studies of POH and its derivatives, and check their clinical efficacy and potential side effects.

Abstract
The potentialities of methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents were evaluated for some relevant separation problems—terpene fractionation and fuel processing—studying selectivities, capacities, and solvent performance indices. The activity coefficients at infinite dilution of the solute (1) in the IL (3), γ13∞, of 52 organic solutes were measured by inverse gas chromatography over a temperature range of 333.2–453.2 K. The selected ILs are 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C4mim][PF6], and the equimolar mixture of [C4mim][PF6] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C4mim]Cl. Generally, low polar solutes follow γ1,C4mimCl∞ > γ1,C4mimPF6+C4mimCl∞ > γ1,C4mimPF6∞ while the opposite behavior is observed for alcohols and water. For citrus essential oil deterpenation, the results suggest that cations with long alkyl chains, such as C12mim+, promote capacity, while selectivity depends on the solute polarity. Promising results were obtained for the separation of several model mixtures relevant to fuel industries using the equimolar mixture of [C4mim][PF6] and [C4mim]Cl. This work demonstrates the importance of tailoring the polarity of the solvents, suggesting the use of ILs with mixed anions as alternative solvents for the removal of aliphatic hydrocarbons and contaminants from fuels.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the chemical composition as well as antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic properties of the essential oil of Mentha piperita L. (peppermint). Fifteen chemical constituents were identified in the essential oil, for a total of 99.99% of the compounds. The essential oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against two Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of essential oil of Mentha piperita L. for Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes was 1.84 μg/ml, whereas the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values were 3.7 and 7.43 μg/ml, respectively. The oil displayed potent antioxidant activity inhibiting up to approximately73% of 2,2'-azinothiobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals. In the cytotoxicity assay, the highest essential oil concentration (100 μg/ml) resulted in viability of approximately 90% human epidermal keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells. With respect to antitumor activity in C6 rat glioma cells, there was significant reduction in cell viability: 56-74% in 24 hr, and 71-77% in 48 hr. Data suggest that in presence of the essential oil of Mentha piperita L. antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumor and non-cytotoxic properties were noted.

Abstract
Biofilm is a structured community of microorganisms adhering to surfaces of various polymeric materials used in food packaging. Microbes in the biofilm may affect food quality. However, the presence of biofilm can ensure biodegradation of discarded packaging. This work aims to evaluate a biofilm formation on the selected biodegradable polymer films: poly (lactic acid) (PLA), poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) by selected bacterial strains; collection strains of Escherichiacoli, Staphylococcusaureus; and Bacillus pumilus, Bacillussubtilis, Bacillustequilensis, and Stenotrophomonasmaltophilia isolated from dairy products. Three different methods for biofilm evaluation were performed: the Christensen method, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and fluorescence microscopy. High biofilm formation was confirmed on the control PBS film, whereas low biofilm formation ability was observed on the PLA polymer sample. Furthermore, the films with incorporated antimicrobial compounds (thymol or eugenol) were also prepared. Antimicrobial activity and also reduction in biofilm formation on enriched polymer films were determined. Therefore, they were all proved to be antimicrobial and effective in reducing biofilm formation. These films can be used to prepare novel active food packaging for the dairy industry to prevent biofilm formation and enhance food quality and safety in the future.

Abstract
In this work, monomers of carvacrol (5-isopropyl-2-methylphenol), a natural monoterpene exhibiting wide range bioactivity, were trapped in a cryogenic argon matrix and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, while quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP and MP2 levels were employed to characterize the conformational landscape of the isolated molecule. Four conformers have been localized on the potential energy surface, and the factors accounting for their relative stability were analyzed. The two most stable conformers of carvacrol, differing in the relative orientation of the isopropyl group and both having the OH group pointing away from the vicinal methyl fragment, were identified in the cryomatrix for the first time. The individual spectral signatures of the two conformers were distinguished based on the change in their relative abundance induced by exposing the matrix to broadband infrared light. Matrix-isolated carvacrol was also irradiated with broadband UV light (λ > 200 nm), which resulted in the cleavage of the OH group. Recombination of the released H atom at the ortho- or para-position of the ring resulted in the formation of alkyl-substituted cyclohexadienones. These were found to undergo subsequent valence and open-ring isomerizations, leading, respectively, to the formation of a Dewar isomer and open-chain conjugated ketenes. Decarbonylation of the photoproducts was also observed for longer irradiation times. A mechanistic analysis of the observed photochemical transformations is presented.

Abstract
The development of food-borne and infectious diseases has increased globally at an anomalous rate and is combined with emerging social and economic problems. This highlights the need for new and improved antibacterial agents with novel and different mechanisms of action at regular intervals. Some chemical or artificial food additives are considered harmful if they are used beyond their permissible levels. Today, consumers are demanding alternative, green, safer, and natural food additives to increase the shelf life of food. Essential oils (EOs) are concentrated liquid mixtures of volatile compounds with antioxidant and antibacterial properties that can be used as natural, eco-friendly, renewable, and cost-effective additives. The use of combinations of different EOs and their components is a promising strategy to increase the synergistic and additive effects of EOs in foods. In this article, we review the recent literature on EOs concerning the chemical constituents, extraction methods, antioxidant and antibacterial activities, and their mechanisms of action. Additionally, we discuss the synergistic interaction of different EOs and their components, challenges, and future directions of EOs as natural food preservatives, with special emphasis on shelf life extension and applications in the packaging of food products.

Abstract
The antimicrobial activities of Baccharis dracunculifolia DC essential oil (EO) and hydroalcoholic extract (HE) were evaluated. The EO showed broad antimicrobial activity and its synergistic combination with nisin was tested. Major components of EO were nerolidol, beta-pinene and D-limonene, while artepillin C, rutin and cafeic acid were major phenolics of HE. EO and HE were tested by agar diffusion assay against several strains of bacteria and yeasts, and mixed cultures of bacterial strains. The EO presented the largest spectrum of antimicrobial activity inhibiting all Gram-positive bacteria tested. Yeasts were not inhibited. The effect of EO against mixtures of sensitive and non-sensitive bacteria was tested on milk agar, being the inhibitory effect only observed on mixtures containing susceptible strains. The combination of EO and nisin at ½ MIC was evaluated on the growth curve of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Enteritidis during 24 h at 37 °C. The combination EO-nisin was effective and no viable counts of B. cereus, L. monocytogenes and S. Enteritidis was observed, while the individual antimicrobials caused no inhibition. The counts of S. aureus were about 4 log CFU/mL lower in comparison with EO or nisin alone. B. dracunculifolia DC may be a potential source of natural antimicrobials, and its synergistic effect with nisin would reduce the working concentration, minimizing the organoleptic effects associated with this plant antimicrobial.

Abstract
A critical overview of current approaches to the development of starch-containing packaging, integrating the principles of green chemistry (GC), green technology (GT) and green nanotechnology (GN) with those of green packaging (GP) to produce materials important for both us and the planet is given. First, as a relationship between GP and GC, the benefits of natural bioactive compounds are analyzed and the state-of-the-art is updated in terms of the starch packaging incorporating green chemicals that normally help us to maintain health, are environmentally friendly and are obtained via GC. Newer approaches are identified, such as the incorporation of vitamins or minerals into films and coatings. Second, the relationship between GP and GT is assessed by analyzing the influence on starch films of green physical treatments such as UV, electron beam or gamma irradiation, and plasma; emerging research areas are proposed, such as the use of cold atmospheric plasma for the production of films. Thirdly, the approaches on how GN can be used successfully to improve the mechanical properties and bioactivity of packaging are summarized; current trends are identified, such as a green synthesis of bionanocomposites containing phytosynthesized metal nanoparticles. Last but not least, bioinspiration ideas for the design of the future green packaging containing starch are presented.

Abstract
Photooxygenation reactions involving singlet oxygen (1O2) are utilized industrially as a mild and sustainable access to oxygenated products. Due to the usage of organic dyes as photosensitizers, these transformations can be successfully conducted using natural sunlight. Modern solar chemical reactors enable outdoor operations on the demonstration (multigram) to technical (multikilogram) scales and have subsequently been employed for the manufacturing of fine chemicals such as fragrances or biologically active compounds. This review will highlight examples of solar photooxygenations for the manufacturing of industrially relevant target compounds and will discuss current challenges and opportunities of this sustainable methodology.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established clinical treatment technology which utilizes excitation light of a specific wavelength to activate photosensitizers (PSs) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to cancer cell death. Over the past decades of PDT research, progress have been made in the development of PSs. However, many inherent characteristics of traditional PSs have caused various problems in PDT, such as low treatment efficiency at aggregation state and shallow treatment depth. In solution to these problems, aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based PSs have been reported in recent years. Here, this article reviews the design strategy and the biomedical applications of AIE PSs in detail, which begins with a summary of traditional PSs for a comparison between traditional PSs and AIE PSs. Subsequently, the different functional AIE PSs in photodynamic cancer cells ablation and image-guided therapy are discussed in detail taking controllable excitation wavelength, stimulus response and PDT/photothermal therapy synergistic effect as examples. These studies have demonstrated the great potential of AIE PSs as effective theranostic agents. And the review provides references for the development of new PSs and hopefully spur research interest in AIE PSs for future clinical application.

Abstract
Rhus coriaria L. (Anacardiaceae), commonly known as sumac, is a commonly used spice, condiment, and flavoring agent, especially in the Mediterranean region. Owing to its bountiful beneficial values, sumac has been used in traditional medicine for the management and treatment of many ailments including hemorrhoids, wound healing, diarrhea, ulcer, and eye inflammation. This plant is rich in various classes of phytochemicals including flavonoids, tannins, polyphenolic compounds, organic acids, and many others. By virtue of its bioactive, Rhus coriaria possesses powerful antioxidant capacities that have ameliorative and therapeutic benefits for many common diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. This review describes the phytochemical properties of R. coriaria and then focuses on the potent antioxidant capacities of sumac. We then dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of sumac’s action in modulating many pathophysiological instigators. We show how accumulating evidence supports the antibacterial, antinociceptive, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and anticancer effects of this plant, especially that toxicity studies show that sumac is very safe to consume by humans and has little toxicity. Taken together, the findings we summarize here support the utilization of this plant as an attractive target for drug discovery.

Abstract
Increased multidrug resistance prompted researchers to search for a new drug that has the ability to overcome antibiotic resistant pathogens. Essential oils have been used in folk medicine for centuries, therefore, they could be employed as an effective alternative to antibiotics without having secondary side effects.
The aim of the present study was to test the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the essential oil of Achillea santolina and to ascertain its mode of action.
Minimum Biofilm Inhibitory Concentration (MBIC) susceptibility assays were performed using a biofilm inoculator with a 96-well plate with peg led. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was performed in normal microtitre plates using a twofold dilution series.
Achillea santolina essential oil (ASEO) was able to overcome the resistance of all tested bacteria. The MIC values were in the range of 250-1000 µg/ml, while the MBC values were in the range of 500-2000 µg/ml. ASEO increased leakage of potassium ions from the cell membrane and increased release of cellular materials – suggesting that the cell membrane is the target and site of action of ASEO. Moreover, ASEO was able to inhibit initial adherence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (ATCC 43300) at sub-inhibitory concentrations through alterations to cell membrane.

Abstract
This study attempted the extraction of essential oils from the peels of pomelo (Citrus grandis L.)
grown in Ben Tre province, Vietnam through hydrodistillation method. In addition, the chemical
composition and physio-chemical properties of the essential oils were reported. The results showed
that the extraction yield of the extraction process achieved about 1.67%. The physico-chemical index
of essential oils is determined by specific gravity (0.8572 g/cm3), acid index (0.3556 mg KOH/g),
ester index (2.4216 mg KOH/g), and refractive index (1.476). The GC-MS analyses of the oil indicated
the component with highest content in the oil was α-limonene (96.491%), followed by α-pinene
(0.686%), β-pinene (0.248%), β-myrcene (1.644%), α-phellandrene (0.793%) and β-cis-ocimene
(0.138%). These results suggested that wastes from fruit peeling process can be converted into a new
material source with great potential for industrial use.

Abstract
Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is a tropical crop with extensive medicinal potential in ethnomedicine and nutraceutical applications. The essential oil of black pepper finds wide applications in inhabitation of respiratory infections and soothing of muscular pains due to its warming and energizing property. The pungent bioactive piperine is responsible for this function, and therefore, efficient technology is required for an optimal extraction process of this compound. In the present article, we have developed a procedure for extracting black pepper essential oil from Vietnam, optimizing conditions that affect the extraction process. The effect of process parameters, namely material size, preservation method, the concentration of sodium chloride, the concentration of soak time, the ratio of material to water, temperature extraction, time extraction on the extraction yield, and relative efficiency were investigated. Results demonstrated that 20 g of black pepper milled with a mesh size of 160 obtained 0.48 g of essential oil (2.4%) at a raw material to water ratio of 1/21 (g/mL) at 150 °C in a time of 5.2 h. GC-MS (Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) spectra showed that 3-carene (29.21%), D-limonene (20.94%), caryophyllene (15.05%), and β-pinene (9.77%) were present as major components. These results suggested that the essential oil extracted from Vietnamese black pepper is applicable in the manufacturing processes of insecticides and air deodorizers.

Limited success for Aedes control program has impelled the necessities for new insecticide search. Hence, alternative plant compounds may be competent to overcome the pesticide resistance problem and to lead a chemical-free environment. Following go-green conceptions, larvicidal effects of the Azolla pinnata extracts using methanol and acetone solvent against Aedes albopictus late 3rd instar larvae were evaluated. The A. pinnata fresh plant from Kuala Krai, Kelantan, Malaysia (5° 31′ N 102° 12′ E) was used for crude extraction with Soxhlet apparatus using methanol and acetone solvents. Next, larvicidal test following WHO guidelines was tested against late 3rd instar to early 4th instar larvae of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. Meanwhile, the chemical composition of extracts and their structures have been identified using GCMS-QP2010 Ultra (Shimadzu) fitted with Rtx-5MS capillary column (30 m × 0.25 mm inner diameter, ×0.25 μm film thickness; maximum temperature, 370°C), coupled to QP2010 Ultra (Shimadzu) MS. Results of methanol solvent showed the highest larvicidal activity against late 3rd instar to early 4th instar Ae. albopictus larvae with LC50 and LC95 values of 867 ppm and 1293 ppm at 24 hours, respectively, and 647 ppm and 972 ppm at 48 hours, respectively. Meanwhile, acetone solvent compounds were recorded with LC50 and LC95 values of 1072 ppm and 1302 ppm at 24 hours, respectively, and 904 ppm and 1126 ppm at 48 hours, respectively. Finally, the chemical composition of A. pinnata plant extracts has been characterized for 35 active compounds from methanol solvent and 37 active compounds with acetone solvent. In conclusion, A. pinnata plant bioactive molecules are efficient and could be developed as an eco-friendly, “go-green” approach for mosquitoes' larvicidal control programs. Thus, our study suggests that future research can be conducted on A. pinnata bioactive ingredients against Ae. albopictus larvae in small-scale field trials as botanical insecticide for environmentally friendly approach.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Microemulsions are thermodynamically stable translucent systems widely used for systemic delivery of drugs. The present study is the first to analyze the biotechnological potential of microemulsion systems for therapeutic purposes, through transdermal route, for pain treatment. AREAS COVERED Patents were searched in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), European Patent Office (Espacenet), United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). The inclusion criteria were published patents containing the keywords; 'microemulsion' and 'transdermal' in their title or abstract. 208 patents were found. However, only those patents which mentioned in their abstract or in their description the use of microemulsion system (object of invention) for pain treatment were selected. Were excluded duplicate patents and those that did not report pharmacological use of MEs specifically for pain treatment. Thus, sixteen patents were selected and described in the present study. EXPERT OPINION Patents were found that focused specifically on the development process of microemulsion systems, the inclusion of essential oils in microemulsions, which place microemulsions as delivery systems for NSAIDs and other substances, as well as microemulsions for transdermal administration. These studies reinforce the therapeutic applicability of MEs in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
