Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the Mediterranean diet (MD) and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) measured by skin autofluorescence. This cross-sectional study included 1016 healthy students from the University of Split, Croatia. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire. Adherence to the MD was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Serving Score (MDSS), and tissue AGEs accumulation was measured using the AGE Reader mu (DiagnOptics). Multivariate linear regression was used in the analysis. Students' age and female gender were associated with higher levels of AGEs, which was likewise found for greater coffee intake, adequate olive oil consumption, smoking, and lower levels of physical activity. Higher consummation of vegetables and eating breakfast regularly were associated with lower AGEs levels. The overall MD adherence was not associated with AGEs, possibly due to very low overall compliance to the MD principles among students (8.3% in women and 3.8% in men). Health perception was positively associated with the MD and nonsmoking and negatively with the perceived stress level, while AGEs did not show significant association with self-rated students' health. These results indicate that various lifestyle habits are associated with AGEs accumulation even in young and generally healthy people. Hence, health promotion and preventive measures are necessary from an early age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to assess the effects of Baduanjin exercise on the quality of life (QoL), cardiac function, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS A systematic search of relevant literature published from inception until February 2023 was performed in the Scopus, PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined the effects of Baduanjin exercise on QoL (Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire [MLHFQ]), cardiac function (N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide [NT-Pro BNP] and left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]), and VO2max in patients with CHF. RESULTS Fifteen studies (1180 participants) were included in this analysis. The synthesized results suggested that Baduanjin exercise contributed to significant improvements in the MLHFQ scores (standard mean difference [SMD] = 1.10, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.81 to 1.39, p < 0.001), NT-Pro BNP levels (SMD = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.31 to 0.93, p < 0.01), LVEF (SMD = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.88, p < 0.01), and VO2max (SMD = 0.92, 95% CI: 0.24 to 1.60, p < 0.001) compared with the results of the control groups. Subgroup analyses revealed that engaging in Baduanjin exercise 5-7 times per week was more effective in improving the MLHFQ score compared with 3-4 times per week (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION Evidence from the meta-analysis support the beneficial effects of Baduanjin exercise on the QoL, cardiac function, and VO2max in patients with CHFin China. For optimal QoL improvements, it is recommended to engage in Baduanjin exercise 5-7 times per week for 30-60 min, over a duration of at least 8 weeks. In terms of NT-Pro BNP, Baduanjin exercise sessions of 30-60 min, 2-7 times per week, for a minimum of 8 weeks are recommended.

Abstract
Disorders of lipoprotein metabolism and glucose homeostasis are common consequences of insulin resistance and usually co-segregate in patients with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Insulin-resistant subjects are characterized by atherogenic dyslipidemia, a specific lipid pattern which includes hypertriglyceridemia, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and increased proportion of small, dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Chronic hyperglycemia favors the processes of non-enzymatic glycation, leading to the increased production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Apart from direct harmful effects, AGEs are also potent inducers of oxidative stress and inflammation. In addition, increased AGEs' production may induce further qualitative modifications of small, dense LDL particles, converting them to glycated LDLs. These particles are even more atherogenic and may confer an increased cardiovascular risk. In this narrative review, we summarize the available evidence of the pathophysiological role and clinical importance of circulating AGEs and glycated LDLs in patients with dyslipidemia, particularly those with DM and related complications. In addition, we discuss recent advances and the issues that should be improved regarding laboratory assessment of AGEs and glycated LDLs, as well as the possibilities for their therapeutic modulation.

Abstract
Objective It is controversially discussed in how far smoking contributes to diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) at 3 Tesla has been shown to provide objective values for structural nerve integrity in patients with T2D. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of cigarette smoking on structural nerve integrity in T2D. Methods This cross-sectional prospective cohort study investigated the structural integrity of the sciatic nerve in 10 smokers, 40 never-smokers, and 20 ex-smokers with T2D and 10 healthy control subjects, using diffusion tensor imaging MRN at 3 Tesla and semi-automated nerve fiber tracking. Results were correlated with clinical, electrophysiological, and serological data. Results The sciatic nerve’s fractional anisotropy (FA), a parameter for structural nerve integrity, was significantly lower in smokers with T2D when compared to controls (p = 0.002) and never-smokers (p = 0.015), and lower in ex-smokers when compared to controls (p = 0.015). In addition, sciatic nerve radial diffusivity, a marker of myelin damage, was increased in smokers versus controls and never-smokers (p = 0.048, p = 0.049, respectively). Furthermore, FA in T2D patients was negatively correlated with clinical and electrophysiological markers of DPN. FA also showed negative correlations with the pulse wave velocity, a marker of arterial stiffness and associated microangiopathy, in controls (r = −0.70; p = 0.037), never-smokers (r = −0.45; p = 0.004), ex-smokers (r = −0.55; p = 0.009), and a similar trend in smokers (r = −0.63; p = 0.076). Negative correlations were found between FA and skin auto-fluorescence, a marker of tissue advanced glycation end product accumulation and therefore long-term glycemic stress in T2D, in never-smokers (r = −0.39; p = 0.020) and smokers (r = −0.84; p = 0.004), but not in ex-smokers (r = −0.07; p = 0.765). Conclusion The findings indicate that smoking contributes to sciatic nerve damage in T2D, potentially worsening DPN due to glycemic stress and less microangiopathy-associated myelin damage in active smokers, while angiopathic effects predominate in ex-smokers. To stop smoking may therefore pose a promising preventive measure to slow the progression of DPN in T2D.
