Assessing the effectiveness of psychoeducational interventions on driving behavior: A systematic review and meta-analysis

This review aimed to quantitatively summarize the evidence concerning the effectiveness of psychoeducational interventions on driving behavior. A final pool of 138 studies, totaling approximately 97,000 participants, was included in the analyses and covered all types of driving behavior targeted by the interventions. Using a random effects model, significant results were found for almost all driving outcomes, both post-intervention and long-term. The strongest effect was for reducing distracted driving at post-intervention (d = 1.87 [1.12, 2.60], Z = 4.94, p < 0.001). The only non-significant effects were for reducing errors in the long term (d = 0.50 [-0.87, 1.86], Z = 0.71, p = 0.48) and driving under the influence at post-intervention (d = 0.35 [0.00, 0.71], Z = 1.96, p = 0.05). Concerning which type of intervention was more effective, feedback, training and motivational ones appear to work best. Educational interventions show only weak effects, while awareness interventions seem mostly ineffective. Overall, our results show that most interventions can reduce different types of driving behaviors, but there are specific aspects to be considered based on the targeted behavior.

Analysis of factors influencing aggressive driver behavior and crash involvement

OBJECTIVE

Aggressive driver behavior is one of the major contributing factors to road crashes. However, the relationship between aggressive driver behavior and crash risk is scarcely explored. The present study focused on quantifying the effect of aggressive driver behavior on crash probability.

METHOD AND DATA SOURCES

A sample of 405 Indian drivers were analyzed to model the aggressive driver behavior using self-reported measures. Generalized linear models were developed to quantify the effects of independent variables such as age, gender, personality traits (e.g., driving anger, physical aggression, hostility), and individual predilections to commit violations (e.g., excessive speeding and frequent risky overtaking) on aggressive driver behavior and crash probabilities.

RESULTS

K-means clustering technique was applied to the Aggressive Driving Scale (ADS) scores to cluster the drivers into three groups (aggressive, normal, and cautious). Gender was significantly correlated with aggressive driver behavior. Compared to female drivers, male drivers were 2.57 times more likely to engage in aggressive driving. Driver's age was negatively correlated with aggressive driving. With one-year increment in driver's age, the tendency of a driver to engage in aggressive driving was reduced by 26%. In addition, the likelihood of being engaged in aggressive driving was increased by 2.98 times and 2.15 times for the drivers who engage in excessive speeding and frequent risky overtaking, respectively. Driver's personality traits were significantly correlated with aggressive drivers. The crash involvement model showed that aggressive drivers were 2.79 times more likely to be involved in road crashes than cautious drivers. Further, married drivers were 2.17 times less likely to be involved in crashes, whereas for professional drivers the crash involvement probability was increased by 75%.

CONCLUSIONS

The results revealed that in addition to age and gender personality traits were significant predictors of driving aggression. Further, the driver's marital status was negatively correlated with the crash involvement and professional drivers were more likely to be involved in crashes than nonprofessional drivers. The study findings can be used in identifying specific risk-prone drivers to provide safety measures via in-vehicle Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Road safety education: What works?

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the paper are: METHOD: Seminal papers, collaborative reports from traffic safety research institutes and books from experts have been used as materials. Very diverse fields of application are presented such as: the importance of emotional experience in interaction with traffic experiences; the efficiency of e-learning; the efficiency of simulators to improve hazard perception skills and calibration of one's driving competencies; the efficiency of social norms marketing at changing behaviors by correcting normative misperceptions; the usefulness of parents-based interventions to improve parental supervision; and finally the importance of multi-components programs due to their synergies.

CONCLUSIONS

Scientific evidence collected in this paper shows that RSE may have some positive effects if good practices are adopted, if it is part of a lifelong learning process and if transmits not only knowledge but also "life-skills" (or psycho-social competences).

The role of sensation seeking, perceived peer pressure, and harmful alcohol use in riding with an alcohol-impaired driver

Alcohol-related motor vehicle collisions have been the top of policy agenda for more than three decades in Korea. Despite implementation of various traffic safety measures, some drivers' alcohol use and abuse has resulted in a high number of alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities every year. This paper presents the association of theoretical factors with behavior of riding with an alcohol-impaired driver (RAID) among all age groups in the Korean adult sample. The theoretical factors of the drivers are personality factor, socio-psychological factor, and alcohol-related behavioral risk factor. We utilized national survey data from 1007 respondents consisting of 703 males and 304 females aged 20-66 collected by Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC) to test our theorized model. Our results indicated that there were three major predictors of RAID involvement: sensation seeking propensity, perceived peer pressure, and frequent harmful drinking. Overall, prediction of RAID behavior by gender was mediated entirely through these predictors. The issue of males' higher risk of RAID involvements was addressed for effective communication strategies such as campaigns.

The accident-exposure association: self-reported versus recorded collisions

PROBLEM

It has been claimed that exposure to risk of road traffic accidents (usually conceptualized as mileage) is curvilinearly associated with crashes (i.e., the increase in number of crashes decreases with increased mileage). However, this effect has been criticized as mainly an artifact of self-reported data.

METHOD

To test the proposition that self-reported accidents create part of the curvilinearity in data by under-reporting by high-accident drivers, self-reported and recorded collisions were plotted against hours of driving for bus drivers.

RESULTS

It was found that the recorded data differed from self-reported information at the high end of exposure, and had a more linear association with the exposure measure as compared to the self-reported data, thus supporting the hypothesis.

DISCUSSION

Part of the previously reported curvilinearity between accidents and exposure is apparently due to biased methods. Also, the interpretation of curvilinearity as an effect of exposure upon accidents was criticized as unfounded, as the causality may just as well go the other way.

IMPACT ON INDUSTRY

The question of how exposure associates with crash involvement is far from resolved, and everyone who uses an exposure metric (mileage, time, induced) should be careful to investigate the exact properties of their variable before using it.
