Tuning metal–carboxylate coordination in crystalline metal–organic frameworks through surfactant media

Recent Advances in Pristine Iron Triad Metal-Organic Framework Cathodes for Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Pristine iron triad metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., Fe-MOFs, Co-MOFs, Ni-MOFs, and heterometallic iron triad MOFs, are utilized as versatile and promising cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries, owing to their distinctive structure characteristics, including modifiable and designable composition, multi-electron redox-active sites, exceptional porosity, and stable construction facilitating rapid ion diffusion. Notably, pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes have recently achieved significant milestones in electrochemical energy storage due to their exceptional electrochemical properties. Here, the recent advances in pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries are summarized. The redox reaction mechanisms and essential strategies to boost the electrochemical behaviors in associated electrochemical energy storage devices are also explored. Furthermore, insights into the future prospects related to pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries are also delivered.

Donor Radii in Rare-Earth Complexes

We present a set of donor radii for the rare-earth cations obtained from the analysis of structural data available in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and wave function approaches (NEVPT2) demonstrate that the Ln-donor distances can be broken down into contributions of the cation and the donor atom, with the minimum in electron density (ρ) that defines the position of (3,-1) critical points corresponding well with Shannon's crystal radii (CR). Subsequent linear fits of the experimental bond distances for all rare earth cations (except Pm3+) afforded donor radii (rD) that allow for the prediction of Ln-donor distances regardless of the nature of the rare-earth cation and its oxidation state. This set of donor radii can be used to rationalize structural data and identify particularly weak or strong interactions, which has important implications in the understanding of the stability and reactivity of complexes of these metal ions. A few cases of incorrect atom assignments in X-ray structures were also identified using the derived rD values.

Thermodynamic Stability of Mn(II) Complexes with Aminocarboxylate Ligands Analyzed Using Structural Descriptors

We present a quantitative analysis of the thermodynamic stabilities of Mn(II) complexes, defined by the equilibrium constants (log K_MnL values) and the values of pMn obtained as −log[Mn]_free for total metal and ligand concentrations of 1 and 10 μM, respectively. We used structural descriptors to analyze the contributions to complex stability of different structural motifs in a quantitative way. The experimental log K_MnL and pMn values can be predicted to a good accuracy by adding the contributions of the different motifs present in the ligand structure. This allowed for the identification of features that provide larger contributions to complex stability, which will be very helpful for the design of efficient chelators for Mn(II) complexation. This issue is particularly important to develop Mn(II) complexes for medical applications, for instance, as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. The analysis performed here also indicates that coordination number eight is more common for Mn(II) than is generally assumed, with the highest log K_MnL values generally observed for hepta- and octadentate ligands. The X-ray crystal structure of [Mn₂(DOTA)(H₂O)₂], in which eight-coordinate [Mn(DOTA)]^2– units are bridged by six-coordinate exocyclic Mn(II) ions, is also reported.

We present empirical relationships that allow estimating the log K and pMn values of Mn(II) complexes relevant as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The prediction of complex stability with these expressions relies on structural descriptors, providing a very powerful tool to aid with ligand design.

Highlighting Recent Crystalline Engineering Aspects of Luminescent Coordination Polymers Based on F-Elements and Ditopic Aliphatic Ligands

Three principal factors may influence the final structure of coordination polymers (CPs): (i) the nature of the ligand, (ii) the type and coordination number of the metal center, and (iii) the reaction conditions. Further, flexible carboxylate aliphatic ligands have been widely employed as building blocks for designing and synthesizing CPs, resulting in a diverse array of materials with exciting architectures, porosities, dimensionalities, and topologies as well as an increasing number of properties and applications. These ligands show different structural features, such as torsion angles, carbon backbone number, and coordination modes, which affect the desired products and so enable the generation of polymorphs or crystalline phases. Additionally, due to their large coordination numbers, using 4f and 5f metals as coordination centers combined with aliphatic ligands increases the possibility of obtaining different crystal phases. Additionally, by varying the synthetic conditions, we may control the production of a specific solid phase by understanding the thermodynamic and kinetic factors that influence the self-assembly process. This revision highlights the relationship between the structural variety of CPs based on flexible carboxylate aliphatic ligands and f-elements (lanthanide and actinides) and their outstanding luminescent properties such as solid-state emissions, sensing, and photocatalysis. In this sense, we present a structural analysis of the CPs reported with the oxalate ligand, as the one rigid ligand of the family, and other flexible dicarboxylate linkers with –CH₂– spacers. Additionally, the nature of the luminescence properties of the 4f or 5f-CPs is analyzed, and finally, we present a novel set of CPs using a glutarate-derived ligand and samarium, with the formula [2,2′-bipyH][Sm(HFG)₂ (2,2′-bipy) (H₂O)₂]•(2,2′-bipy) (α-Sm) and [2,2′-bipyH][Sm(HFG)₂ (2,2′-bipy) (H₂O)₂] (β-Sm).

Pyclen-Based Ligands Bearing Pendant Picolinate Arms for Gadolinium Complexation

We report the synthesis of two pyclen-based regioisomer ligands (pyclen = 3,6,9,15-tetraazabicyclo[9.3.1]pentadeca-1(15),11,13-triene) functionalized with picolinic acid pendant arms either at positions 3,9-pc2pa (L5) or 3,6-pc2pa (L6) of the macrocyclic fragment. The ligands were prepared by the regiospecific protection of one of the amine nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle using Boc and Alloc protecting groups, respectively. The X-ray structure of the Gd(III) complex of L5 contains trinuclear [(GdL5)₃(H₂O)₃]³⁺ entities in which the monomeric units are joined by μ₂-η¹:η¹-carboxylate groups. However, the ¹H and ⁸⁹Y NMR spectra of its Y(III) analogue support the formation of monomeric complexes in solution. The Tb(III) complexes are highly luminescent, with emission quantum yields of up to 28% for [TbL5]⁺. The luminescence lifetimes recorded in H₂O and D₂O solutions indicate the presence of a water molecule coordinated to the metal ion, as also evidenced by the ¹H relaxivities measured for the Gd(III) analogues. The Gd(III) complexes present very different exchange rates of the coordinated water molecule (k_ex²⁹⁸ = 87.1 × 10⁶ and 1.06 × 10⁶ s^-1 for [GdL5]⁺ and [GdL6]⁺, respectively). The very high water exchange rate of [GdL5]⁺ is associated with the steric hindrance originating from the coordination of the ligand around the water binding site, which favors a dissociatively activated water exchange process. The Gd(III) complexes present rather high thermodynamic stabilities (log K_GdL = 20.47 and 19.77 for [GdL5]⁺ and [GdL6]⁺, respectively). Furthermore, these complexes are remarkably inert with respect to their acid-assisted dissociation, in particular the complex of L5.

Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks in oil spills and associated organic pollutant remediation

The release of toxic organic compounds into the environment in an event of oil spillage is a global menace due to the potential impacts on the ecosystem. Several approaches have been employed for oil spills clean-up, with adsorption technique proven to be more promising for the total reclamation of a polluted site. Of the several adsorbents so far reported, adsorbent-based porous materials have gained attention for the reduction/total removal of different compounds in environmental remediation applications. The superior potential of mesoporous materials based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) against conventional adsorbents is due to their intriguing and enhanced properties. Therefore, this review presents recent development in MOF composites; methods of preparation; and their practical applications towards remediating oil spill, organic pollutants, and toxic gases in different environmental media, as well as potential materials in the possible deployment in reclaiming the polluted Niger Delta due to unabated oil spillage and gas flaring.

Mn2+ Complexes Containing Sulfonamide Groups with pH-Responsive Relaxivity

We present two ligands containing a N-ethyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonamide group attached to either a 6,6'-(azanediylbis(methylene))dipicolinic acid unit (H₃DPASAm) or a 2,2'-(1,4,7-triazonane-1,4-diyl)diacetic acid macrocyclic platform (H₃NO2ASAm). These ligands were designed to provide a pH-dependent relaxivity response upon complexation with Mn²⁺ in aqueous solution. The protonation constants of the ligands and the stability constants of the Mn²⁺ complexes were determined using potentiometric titrations complemented by spectrophotometric experiments. The deprotonations of the sulfonamide groups of the ligands are characterized by protonation constants of log K_i^H = 10.36 and 10.59 for DPASAm^3- and HNO2ASAm^2-, respectively. These values decrease dramatically to log K_i^H = 6.43 and 5.42 in the presence of Mn²⁺, because of the coordination of the negatively charged sulfonamide groups to the metal ion. The higher log K_i^H value in [Mn(DPASAm)]^- is related to the formation of a seven-coordinate complex, while the metal ion in [Mn(NO2ASAm)]^- is six-coordinated. The X-ray crystal structure of Na[Mn(DPASAm)(H₂O)]·2H₂O confirms the formation of a seven-coordinate complex, where the coordination environment is fulfilled by the donor atoms of the two picolinate groups, the amine N atom, the N atom of the sulfonamide group, and a coordinated water molecule. The lower conditional stability of the [Mn(NO2ASAm)]^- complex and the lower protonation constant of the sulfonamide group results in complex dissociation at relatively high pH (<7.0). However, protonation of the sulfonamide group in [Mn(DPASAm)]^- falls into the physiologically relevant pH window and causes a significant increase in relaxivity from r_1p = 3.8 mM^-1 s^-1 at pH 9.0 to r_1p = 8.9 mM^-1 s^-1 at pH 4.0 (10 MHz, 25 °C).

Recent development of two-dimensional metal-organic framework derived electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis

Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts with unique nanostructures is of great significance for improved electrocatalytic reactions, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted recent attention because of their unique dimension-related properties, such as ultrathin thickness, large specific surface area, and abundant accessible active sites that can act as good precursors for the derivation of a variety of nanocomposites as active materials in electrocatalysis and energy-related devices. In this review, we present recent developments in 2D MOF-derived nanomaterials for hydrogen and oxygen reactions in overall water-splitting and rechargeable Zn-air batteries. The advantages of various synthetic strategies are summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, we discuss the main challenges and future perspectives of the development of 2D MOF-derived electrocatalysts.

Microwave Assisted Surfactant-Thermal Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Materials

This research explores the application of surfactants as green solvents for the rapid microwave synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. Lead, copper, and iron metal-organic framework materials were synthesized using surfactant-thermal microwave synthesis. The MOF materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. With the exception of the iron MOF, which was expected to be amorphous, the MOF materials are crystalline, though generally exhibiting smaller crystals than those achieved with traditional solvothermal synthesis. This green synthetic method reduced synthesis time and reduced the use of traditional organic solvents as the reaction media.

MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives: from synthesis to application for wastewater decontamination

MIL-100(Fe), an environmental-friendly and water-stable metal-organic framework (MOF), has caught increasing research and application attention in the recent decade. Thanks to its mesoporous structure and eximious surface area, MIL-100(Fe) has been utilized as precursors for synthesizing various porous materials under high thermolysis temperature, which makes the derivatives of MIL-100(Fe) pretty promising candidates for the decontamination of wastewater. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the versatile synthetic methods and conditions for optimizing the properties of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives. Then, diverse environmental applications (i.e., adsorption, photocatalysis, and Fenton-like reaction) of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives and the corresponding removal mechanisms are detailed in the discussion. Finally, existing knowledge gaps related to fabrications and applications are discussed to close and promote the future development of MIL-100(Fe) and its derivatives toward environmental applications. Developing the family of picolinate ligands for Mn2+ complexation

We have reported here a series of ligands containing pentadentate 6,6'-(azanediylbis(methylene))dipicolinic acid units that differ in the substituent present at the amine nitrogen atom (acetate: H₃DPAAA; phenyl: H₂DPAPhA; dodecyl: H₂DPAC12A; 4-hexylphenyl: H₂DPAC6PhA). The protonation constants of the hexadentate DPAAA^3- and pentadentate DPAPhA^2- ligands and the stability constants of their Mn²⁺ complexes were determined using pH-potentiometry (25 °C, 0.15 M NaCl). The mono-hydrated [Mn(DPAAA)]^- complex (log K_MnL = 13.19(5)) was found to be considerably more stable than the bis-hydrated [Mn(DPAPhA)] analogue (log K_MnL = 9.55(1)). A detailed ¹H and ¹⁷O NMR relaxometric study was carried out to determine the parameters that govern the proton relaxivities of these complexes. The [Mn(DPAC12A)] complex, which contains a dodecyl lipophilic chain, forms micelles in solution characterized by a critical micellar concentration (cmc) of 96(9) μM. The lipophilic [Mn(DPAC6PhA)] and [Mn(DPAC12A)] derivatives form rather strong adducts with Human Serum Albumin (HSA) with association constants of 7.1 ± 0.1 × 10³ and 1.3 ± 0.4 × 10⁵ M^-1, respectively. The X-ray structure of the complex {K(H₂O)₄}{[Mn(DPAAA)(H₂O)]}₂ shows that the Mn²⁺ ion in [Mn(DPAAA)]^- is coordinated to the six donor atoms of the ligand, a coordinated water molecule completing the pentagonal bipyramidal coordination environment.

High-performance supercapacitors of Cu-based porous coordination polymer nanowires and the derived porous CuO nanotubes

Electrode materials for supercapacitors with one-dimensional porous nanostructures, such as nanowires and nanotubes, are very attractive for high-efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, ultralong Cu-based porous coordination polymer nanowires (copper-l-aspartic acid) were used as the electrode material for supercapacitors, for the first time. The as-prepared material exhibits a high specific capacitance of 367 F g^-1 at 0.6 A g^-1 and excellent cycling stability (94% retention over 1000 cycles). Moreover, porous CuO nanotubes were successfully fabricated by the thermal decomposition of this nanowire precursor. The CuO nanotube exhibits good electrochemical performance with high rate capacity (77% retention at 12.5 A g^-1) and long-term stability (96% retention over 1000 cycles). The strategy developed here for the synthesis of porous nanowires and nanotubes can be extended to the construction of other electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.
